Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Re: Question about Breyers? Arctic Grandeur
« on: November 15, 2021, 10:20:07 AM »
I Recently ordered from them for the first time as well (needed that copper unicorn combo) but I found their shipping to be a bit of a mess. I eventually got my order but the updates I was supposed to get never came through. I sent an email after about two weeks asking for an update and suddenly got it the next day, so their tracking system isn’t great. Never did get a response from anyone. I think in the future I’ll use a third party. I like the free shipping but I’m not sure if it’s worth having no resources if something goes wrong.

At least one person is already doing this (Clipper) so while I’m not personally sure, it would seem hasbro hasn’t been bothered enough by it to take action? Or perhaps removing the hasbro mark puts reproductions into a gray area because hasbro has always been fine with the customizing community, as far as I know.

Ice Crystal  oof
Something about seeing the head popped off and all the cut marks around the neck just hurts. Has anyone figured out a formula to eat away at the old factory glue? I remember the old heat methods but I think that was like 50/50

I hadn’t considered COVID but now that makes sense. I need to remember to check here more often.

My apologies if this would be more appropriate in the sales thread.

I’m actively buying again for the first time in a long while and I’m curious if there are other good places to check besides eBay and Etsy. Certainly you can find what you want both places but the inflation seems pretty bad right now. Thought I’d look for some alternatives.

Friend of mine suggested Mercari. Anywhere else you like to haunt?

I’m glad they’re stamped that’s going to help!

Pony Corral / Re: Price check: Mimic
« on: November 11, 2021, 08:53:51 AM »
I'm under the impression they'd need Mimic specifically since she's the only Twinkle Eye in this mold and it'd presumably be easier to figure out how to put her eyes in if they had an original to use, rather than reverse-engineer it... or at least I think that's the impression most of us are under... But I might be misunderstanding or something. I dunno.

I think that's the case. But with the others they've apparently had multiples of the same pony so...just think of that in the reality, if they need Mimic for the mould as well as the photos and the colour ident and all those things...think of the outlay that would be.

I personally wouldn't sacrifice a Mimic to them with no guarantees given how many people are looking for her in real terms, but I also don't think they would consider buying her themselves at the stupid prices she currently goes for. She's not iconic outside of the pony community, and we're a very small community. SO.

LM's way is probably the only very slim chance. It's just...I think...still really slim, because they possibly need more than we can give.

And it may just lead to the loss of one more Mimic from the community.
fair point. I would assume if hasbro still has the G1 molds for them to use that should include whatever they used for the eyes but who knows. I’m always floored by what materials and copyrights etc companies will allow to rot when they aren’t using them.

Technically they could just create a clay cast of the appropriate body model and press the eye gem of any twinkle into the clay eye to get the right look for mimic.

I like the variety we got in G1 and I wish they’d done more like the perfume puffs(has anyone ever figured out what hair they used for this?), but color combo wise I like what I saw in g2 and g3 a lot. I feel like g2 gave us the purple and yellow combo and some blue and orange, while g3 just ran with it. I also appreciate the addition of more tri color manes in g3.

I have zero experience with customs but if I ever attempt any I want to adapt some 2s and 3s to g1 style.

I found punz in a box with some other G1s back in 2010 at comic con. The guy at the booth was all about the new line if I remember correctly and thought G1s were just for customs. Bout had a heart attack when I saw her.

Let's see...

I like flocked ponies. I know they can be disasters if they're not taken care of but something about them works for me. I'd love to try making my own someday.

I don't care for the sister style bodies (are we still calling them that?) The longer legs just make me think of other toy lines.

Don't care for G4. It's not for me. I pretty much exist in G1 world though a few g2s and g3s are appealing to me.

Wish I could say I don't get the hype for certain ponies but I REALLY want Icy Crystal haha I know mimic is always fluxing price wise. Not sure who else is coveted RN aside from Punz (though I know a lot of people don't care for her anymore)

I'm excited about the idea of new classic style ponies although I'm not sure yet how I feel about reproducing the old ones. I can see this causing issues with honesty during sales and I'd much rather see new fun ideas. The old line was limited by what they thought was marketable to little girls at the time but now there's a chance to expand since I think G1 is largely older fans or younger people who picked it up from older fans etc.

Probably not unpopular but I don't like the hard plastic types of toys that are super popular right now will all kinds of toy lines.

Some people have done flocked customs on here.

Sorry I’m clearly out of the loop, are old ponies going into production again via a new company?

Post Merge: November 10, 2021, 05:39:08 PM

Maybe a silly follow up but do they need an actually pony of mimic? Seeing what clipper has made makes it seem like having an actual pony to copy isn’t a necessity.

Re: first comment - yes, Basic Fun have been making a line of repro ponies, we have a thread for them here: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,401206.0.html

Regarding the HQG1Cs, as I recall they actually do use baity original G1s to make the molds for those.

Thanks for the link.

If that's the case with the HQG1's I don't think it's necessary to send this company the real thing. Maybe if someone can figure out the color codes for her that would help but the real thing isn't going to do much unless they have the tech to extract color from old plastic (maybe that's easier than I'm thinking?)

Maybe seeing refurbished as opposed to restored is what threw me off. It felt weird to see a bunch of (what are commonly understood to be rare) ponies with new hair and paint. I know there’s a market for that but I’m also very wary of anything without a neck seal. I can see the temptation for someone outside the community to maybe mimic a rare pony or something.

Not that this person is doing that. I want to be perfectly clear I’m not accusing anyone of anything, I just know g4 brought a TON of new eyes to the community and that also brings scammers. If everything you’re selling is a fixed up nirvana or tagged in some special way I’m skeptical.

I also understand the personal desire to fix up ponies. I’m into Breyer dapples right now and boy oh boy do I want to fix up some scratches and maybe paint in teeth or other small destails they didn’t bother with for some lines.

I've rehaired and repainted Argies in my collection. I think restoring poinies to sell is kinda weird? I guess there's a market for it. But if I sold ponies, I wouldn't bother and let the buyer choose what they do with it. But as far as ponies in my own collection? Heck yes, I'll restore them. They're mine. I can do what I want.

edit: Also hi! I remember you, you did some art of my ponysona :)
Ayyyye hi BC. I think the last time I saw you was on pony island but I didn’t do much chatting there. Maybe I can do more fun art things over here when I’ve got the time.

Okay, cool. So it’s just a preference thing. From what I can see it looks like they generally rehair and do other small touch ups. I appreciate that they disclose that, it just caught me off guard with ponies don’t normally see people alter.

Should I add a poll to see if it’s appealing or not as a buyer?
