Off Topic / Re: Gift giving - how do I do this right?
« on: December 14, 2014, 05:40:57 PM »
It isn't silly at all - in fact, there is a great deal of study in the field of sociocultural anthropology on reciprocity and gift exchange.  And as someone who is also rather introverted, I definitely relate to your feelings of uncertainty with regard to getting something for a new friend.

I think you were given some great advice already, and I hope everything turns out well! How I usually handle things like this is if someone were to give me a gift when I had not got anything for them, I would likely make a point of keeping an eye out for something they might like, to give them in return.

Omg omg omg ongomgggg! I just tried smoked applewood gruyere and im IN LOVE!
:frolic: :lovey: :hearts:  :yippee:
.....

I had samples of some smoked applewood cheddar when I was in NZ last year, and it changed my life lol. I don't have cash for "fancy" cheeses, but I am absolutely addicted to those Laughing Cow Mini Babybel snack cheeses!

When I was a kid, I was very...willful...and insisted I would not eat cheese. No cheese on MY pizza, just tons of that stringy white stuff if you please!  :drunk:  I'm on a mission to make up for what I've been missing by making a point to try different kinds now whenever I can.

He's so cute! Looked at their website, and I love their plush of Zecora as well! When you order online, do they come stitched up proper? I have a BAB from when I was a kid, and her stitching came very loose after a while.

I hated it when we moved to Texas, too (moved back, really, but I was so young the first time we lived here that I don't remember it).  This is the only place we've lived that wasn't near the sea, so I totally get your feelings.  The manmade lakes and the Texas Gulf absolutely do NOT count and the people who have lived here their whole lives, never near a proper beach, just don't understand!

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Re: Puppy Surprise?

These are so cute! I never had Puppy Surprise (or any of the other animal Surprises) when I was a kid, but my cousins and some friends did. I don't feel too tempted to buy one for myself, but I wonder if my niece or nephew would like one...they're too cute not to buy for someone! When we visit them at Christmas, if we see one in a store or on a commercial I'll have to figure out whether they would like one. XD

Pony Corral / Re: Anybody see the latest episode of Storage Wars?
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:34:07 PM »
After watching a clip of the furry episode, and the pony episode, all I can say is this: they're demonizing fringe fandoms to get more viewership. Sure the chick was all "into" the brony culture, but they made the dude seem like a total dweeb... he wore a vague reference-y shirt, had some ponies out, and oohed and ahhed at the ponies like they were some fancy thing.... then priced them like they were each holding a gold nugget in their mouths. That makes bronies and pony collectors look like immature maniacs who'll pay anything to get ahold of a pony. It was embarassing, especially since I'm both a brony and a collector! And the way the guy looked at their poor recruited brony sap... like he was watching something ugly and pitiful... until he heard his over-inflated price of course. Then he hurried out of the shop.

See, I feel like they could have at least TRIED to do some kind of research and actually found someone who was both a brony and a collector.  It looks like they just went out of their way to find someone to represent brony culture who was "weird" enough to garner interest in the episode but not so eccentric that he'd lose credibility as an appraiser. Either way, I'd like to see a follow-up where they try to actually sell the ponies for that much  :silly:

Introductions / Re: Hello
« on: December 10, 2014, 04:56:58 PM »
Welcome! I joined in pretty recently as well, but have always been a fan and a collector. Was on a hiatus for a while, but now I'm obsessed again.  :silly:

Do you still have any of your childhood ponies, or are you hoping to collect any back?

My sister-in-law knows of my love for ponies, and she's a collector of things as well, so she understands value.  Personally, if I didn't have any kids of my own at the time, my collection would go to my sister-in-law for my niece and nephews.  She'd be able to judge which ponies should be display only and which the kids could play with.

If you're worried about it, though, I recommend what others have suggested already - make an inventory of your collection (if you haven't made one already) and note whether there is a charity you'd like them to go to.  Of course, you could also donate them in general to someone along with the note of inventory and value for them to sell.

I recommend sunfading, but it does take time. The effects are quite dramatic though:

Holy crap!  Dramatic is right!  What do you have over her eyes and symbols to protect them?  I want to sunfade *everything* now!

I second this request!

Pony Corral / Re: Pony New Year Goals
« on: December 09, 2014, 03:41:43 PM »
I have a pretty simple few goals - although a couple of them are going to be huge projects, lol

My main goals:

1. Clean up my collection
2. Start a "blog" to display them online as a personal collector's inventory and additional visual reference for others

And of course now that I have a job where I make a bit more money, I hope to expand my collection!  I'll need to figure out a pony budget, though.  If I don't, I'll just end up spending ALL my take-home pay on MLP, and I really can't afford to do that  :silly:
