Pony Corral / Re: Most Underrated Newborn Twins pt. Two
« on: March 23, 2020, 09:31:45 AM »
I voted Sandcastle and Shovels, because they are on my want list even though I'll probably never pay what I see them going for. But I do have a soft spot for Jabber and Jebber/Tickles and Giggles (agree with Taffeta that their US names are stupid). My set has faded hair; it's almost white actually, but they are still cute.

Edited to add: I just realized that this was supposed to be 'underrated', and I answered as though it asked for my favorite. Sandcastle and Shovels probably wouldn't be considered underrated, because they seem to be the most sought-after in this set. I guess if I actually had to say underrated, I'd have to say Sticky and Sniffles, just because they are the set I always see going for the least amount on Ebay.

We only had 3 of the six sets, but those we did have had different names in the UK. Albeit whether they are any better...
Jabber and Jebber = Tickles & Giggles
Speckles & Bunkie = Fleecy and Fluffy
Sticky and Sniffles = Tuggles and Toddles.

On the name subject...I think it's sad more UK people don't use the UK G1 names, even though the UK had far less name repetition than the US. I can understand why for people who came into G1 as adults, but not so much the ones who grew up with G1 as kids.

I do like those names better. I don't know a lot of the UK names that were used--it would be cool if there was a database somewhere that compared the UK vs. US names--but most of the ones I have heard have seemed more appropriate somehow.

In my opinion Jebber could have been named "Jibber" so that set of twins could have made the phrase "Jibber-Jabber" (meaning talking so fast, you don't understand - though I may have also heard it to mean "talking nonsense".)  I also googled "Bunkie" and the only thing I found (though I didn't search for long) was that it could be slang for a bunk mate - nothing to do with Speckles whatsoever as far as I can see, and when I search for both words, I just get the ponies.  I even tried searching "Safety Pin" (as in their symbols) with each name to see if I could find significance, but no.

But yeah... the names you mentioned in general aren't the best, in my opinion either.

I'm not sure why the ones who grew up with it don't do this, as you'd think they'd be the first to do this...

For me, (I came in as an adult) I tend to lean to the US names, because that's what I discovered them as, but I may choose the names I prefer out of the two for my project, or even compromise, like I planned to do for the canon names and the brony names in G4 (though if I recall correctly, only two G4 ponies really kept my "compromises" - and Hasbro compromised with "Lyra/Heartstrings" the same way I was going to anyway.)

I'll have a look through what the US/UK names in G1 are, and see which I like better, or if there are anyways to use both if I choose to in writing - for example, Sweet Stuff was called Sweetie in UK, but that's an easy one to compromise, as "Sweetie" could easily be Sweet Stuff's nickname anyway.

I agree, Jibber and Jabber would have been more appropriate, and made some sense. And the safety pin on Speckles and Bunkie didn't help to give any clues, either. It's like someone at Hasbro asked their 3-year-old their opinion on naming them.

The pony name that always gets me is Woosie.  I always picture a drunk or sick pony. Sometimes I think Hasbro came up with some of the pony names at the company cocktail party.

I grew up in the US so I didn't know the UK had different names for ponies until I joined the Arena but I try to use both names if I know them like Princess Tiffany/Pearl Sguarberry/Strawberry Fair etc..

Ponyfan

I had never heard of Woosie before, and I had to look her up. I like her color scheme, but man, that name! It made me remember this letter I wrote to Hasbro when I was 8 or 9, complete with pictures I drew of ponies that I thought they should make, and one of my creations was a set of twins by the names of 'Tipsy and Topsy' (I think I was trying to go for Topsy-Turvy or something?). Someone from the Hasbro team actually wrote back, sending my drawings back and explaining that they weren't permitted to use my ideas for legal reasons, but that she was sure that I was a very creative child and would maybe someday pursue working for a company like Hasbro when I was grown up, or something like that. My mom read the letter and looked at the drawing, and started laughing...she explained that 'Tipsy' meant drunk and my letter probably got a few laughs in the staff room.

So maybe I'm the pot calling the kettle black in the naming department, but hey, I was like 9!

I think "Bunkie" refers to Bunkie beds/boards used in baby beds.  In the 80s the term was used more often in the US.  At least, where I lived it was common.  I think the name is cute.

I did hate when Hasbro reused names.  Baby Gusty got robbed.

Now that you say that, I think I have heard the term 'Bunkie boards' before in reference to the skinny little box springs that go under bunk beds. I can see it being cute if it were paired up with a more relevant twin name.

Oh, I just use a thumb tack to widen the holes.

Same!  I'm used to using T-pins at work in...dissections...so I don't associate them with ponies at all!  But I can see how they would work for this.

LadyAmalthea, I'll see if I can find the old dental floss method tutorial I used, but I don't know if it will still be up, that was about 6 years ago probably.

Edit: here it is! https://ponycustoms.com/88/my_little_pony_tutorials/hair/rehairing/how-to-rehair-my-little-pony-manes/

Thank you so much! It looks a bit time consuming, but I like the idea of not using glue. When it says to knot the piece of hair, I assume it means to actually tie the piece of hair itself in a knot, not tie it with a piece of dental floss? I'm going to give this method a try. The hair doesn't ever try to work its way back inside the head at all?

I forgot about using T-pins for dissecting...gosh, I haven't dissected anything since high school! I used to love doing that in biology class though, it was so interesting.

The needle method is like, as old as time, but the way I do it is a bit different:
-Insert doll needle eye-first into a head plug.
-Thread your hair. You can do plugs with one knot on the end or knot a twice-long plug in the middle to fill two plugs
-Pull the needle out. Hair is threaded

Thank you...this sounds easy enough! Think I am going to have to try all of these methods to find out which one works best for me. No glue=good idea.

Pony Corral / Re: Unpopular Pony Opinions

My unpopular opinions mostly can be shared with many others on here (I actually read through this entire post prior to having my account approved! It took me days)...but the one I haven't seen mentioned yet is this one: I hate almost all of the names of the second round of G1 twins that were released. Seriously, some of them are SO stupid.

Jabber and Jebber: these are not even words, much less names. What the heck is a 'Jebber'?

Sniffles and Sticky: First of all, did it not occur to the person who came up with these to look up what the previously released twins were called? Because if they even bothered, they would have discovered that there was already another twin named Sniffles, paired with Snookums. That in itself is an unpopular opinion of mine, the recycling of names. It's confusing. That aside, 'Sniffles and Sticky' is just a revolting name combination; it reminds me of a little kid with a cold wiping snot everywhere. Good job, Hasbro.  >_<

Speckles and Bunkie: What on earth is a 'Bunkie', and how does it coordinate with 'Speckles'? They could have come up with something better than that. How about 'Speckles and Spots' or 'Speckles and Freckles'

Big Top and Toppy: Kind of redundant, if you ask me. It reminds me of a real-life set of twins I know named Kayla and Mikayla. Like one could be a nickname for the other...it's always struck me as weird. Also redundant are Big Top's colors; she is basically the same as Rattles and Tattles. In fact, I don't even feel the need to collect this set.

Puddles and Peeks: Not the worst, but the name Peeks is a little dumb and they could have come up with something equally as catchy with Puddles. And what is with the crapping bird symbol on their rump? My sister and I always called them Puddles and Poops, like #1 and #2. Our storyline was that they had troubles with potty training.

Sandcastle and Shovels: This one is actually not so bad. Plus I like their color combinations; I feel like they didn't use enough color variations with twins...all pastels and mostly boring. The orange and blue is at least different, even if still pastel. Too bad this set is so hard to find and expensive; they must not have released as many sets of them.

Pony Corral / Re: Who is your favourite blue pony?
« on: March 18, 2020, 09:34:41 PM »
Baby Ribbon is one of my all-time favorite ponies due to her unique color combination, so I would say her, but I also have a soft spot for blue Baby Ember. Someone gave her to me during a childhood illness I had, and just holding her during a scary time of my life brought me so much comfort. Blue has always been my favorite color, and I've always been attracted to blue ponies.

Dollyhair thread.
I got my tool from RestoreDoll personally, but I've since switched to a needle method because I find it easier and I love not having to use glue. I just got some "doll needles" from JoAnns. If you stick with the glue method, all the tools are basically the same thing and you can DIY one if you really wanted to.
What T-pin?

Thanks for posting the link to the thread. This is kind of disturbing...I'll have to rethink this a bit. Too bad her business practices are so questionable; I really liked her website and how organized it was and informative about the colors. The flat shipping fee on orders over $50 was nice too...I am so sick of how much money I drop on shipping these days! Oh well...I'll explore other options, I guess!

Here is just one of the tutorials I watched that uses the T-pin...it's just used to temporarily widen the holes to get the needle in without breaking it, I think. It shows the use of the T-pin at 0:50 seconds. I'd be interested in learning about the needle method, as well! The glue seems messy, and a bit permanent if you changed your mind after it was done.

Yeah, I don't know what a T-pin is?

I'd stay clear of Dollyhair, not just because of the stuff in the linked thread but it/she has a loooong history of bad business. I like RetroDolls and Doll Planet.

I bought my tool from a member here but she's no longer around. It's easy to make your own though.

Thank you, I'll check those 2 hair sites out. I've heard of RetroDolls before, but haven't explored it yet. I'm disappointed to hear this about Dollyhair, but glad I didn't just blindly order without hearing all of this first.

I haven't bought hair for awhile so I can't advise on that topic.

But as far as tools, I use one I made myself with a large sewing needle (one with a large/long hole).  I cut off the end of the hole at an angle and then cut the needle in half, and put the formerly-pointy end in an Xacto knife.  So then the angle-cut-hole end is pointing out of the Xacto blade about...6mm?  It works great!  I'm sure I found the instructions online for it somewhere.

I've also used the needle and dental floss method of rehairing before too.  It takes a lot longer, at least to me.  But it ends up looking really cool inside the head??  XD

Don't know what the T-pin is...well I know what one is but I don't see how it would be used in pony rehairing.

Thanks for the info. The T-pin is (I guess?) for making the holes a little bigger while you are working, I linked one of the tutorials I watched above and it shows them using it at 0:50 seconds. Maybe it's not needed, since no one on here uses one! I'm interested in hearing about the dental floss method...do you know of a tutorial or instructional website about it?

Customs / Some rehairing help for a first-timer
« on: March 17, 2020, 08:10:13 AM »
Hello! I've been watching YouTube tutorials on rehairing for the past couple of months, and think I'm going to give it a try. At first I was planning on rehairing a few of my childhood ponies that I figured were beyond repair, but honestly after trying some of the tips and tricks I've found online, I haven't found one yet that is completely unsalvageable (my Surprise was borderline, but I even got her to 'acceptable', and I have yet to tackle Baby Blossom, who I think has a cut tail and is quite yellowed; she will undoubtedly need new hair eventually). I bought a few bait ponies online to rehair, but found I don't have the heart to hack their locks off. Finally I recently bought a 'super bait' lot, where the ponies already had theit hair ripped out. So no qualms about trying some rehairs there!

It looks like Dollyhair seems to be the best site to order hair from, am I correct? I like that it tells which ponies match which hair colors. I saw on another post that there was some drama with Dollyhair...is there a reason I shouldn't order from them? I tried to google, but nothing came up other than their site and some Etsy stuff.

How about tools? I tried Amazon, but I didn't know if any of those would be the best; the tool on the Dollyhair site was just as inexpensive, and none of the Amazon ones seemed to specifically recommend for MLP. Size 7 needles, right?

And the T-pin that everyone recommends...where on earth do I buy that? I haven't seen one for sale anywhere.

I'm really looking forward to this project, and I love seeing all of the gorgeous customs you have all posted on here! Thanks for any advice you can give.

Pony Corral / Re: Do you take apart your ponies to wash them?
« on: March 17, 2020, 07:32:37 AM »
If I buy them second-hand from auctions and the heads are already loose, I'll pop them off while cleaning them to check the inside. Most of them have been fine, but I recently opened up a Baby Glory that looked nearly perfect on the outside, but was completely rusty brown inside. I suspect rust, not mold, but it made me wonder what surprises might be lurking inside some of my sealed-head ponies, especially if poor Glory looked that good on the outside. I don't really want to break factory seals to check, but I guess I will if I suspect something funky going on.

Now I just have to figure out how to clean Glory. She's so tiny and it's all down inside all 4 legs...maybe a small bottle brush?

I watched & rented the life out of TLU on video, & later bought it as a DVD, so I had to make this Custom. I took a screenshot of the DVD at a specific scene to help me get her symbols correct.

Oh, I love it!! If I ever figure out how to make customs, I'm totally going to try to make one of her! Thanks for sharing, this made me smile  :)

Agree--non-beddy-bye eye versions of all the babies that had them. I know some were made, I saw a Baby Ribbon for sale recently, but they seem to be very hard to find, and expensive.

Oh, also maybe versions of twinkle-eyed ponies without the twinkle eyes. I love the colors of a lot of the TE ponies, but just not a fan of those eyes.

Trader & Shipping Support / Re: Selling and buying pet peeves.
« on: March 15, 2020, 08:36:17 AM »
My pet peeve is also when people don't respond to questions, but specifically when the question is when I'm asking whether the seller would be willing to split up or sell one single piece out of a lot. I understand that people are busy, but if you can't respond in several days, maybe you shouldn't be selling on Ebay.

I ended up just buying the whole lot once, when the seller hadn't responded in days and the auction was about to end. Within 30 minutes, the seller had marked the item as 'sent'. I was so mad...so they were online! Why didn't they answer me? Seriously, how hard is it to just reply with a 'no, I can't do that'? Honestly, they could have relisted the lot without that piece for the same price and no one would be any the wiser, and gotten the extra money I would have paid for the one piece. I left positive feedback because nothing  was wrong with the actual transaction, but left 0 stars in the 'communication' box and said 'quick transaction and fast shipping, but seller doesn't respond to questions' in the comment line. Maybe that makes me a jerk, I dunno.

Same situation happened again last week, but I waited 2 weeks for a response, and someone bought the lot before the auction ended. I'm kicking myself for not just buying it and trying to resell the other pieces, because I can't find that top clip to Cuddles' buggy anywhere, but I guess it's a principal thing for me. I caved the first time but not the second...but I'm still annoyed.

Post Merge: March 15, 2020, 09:05:22 AM

Oh, and this only happened to me once, so maybe it was a glitch in Ebay's system, but the seller had a 'make offer' option listed on an Ebay auction, so I did (the asking price was $15, and I offered $12). Instantly, I got a notification from Ebay saying that the seller would be more likely to respond to offers $25 or higher. Why on earth would I offer more than the original asking price?! I thought maybe it was a glitch, so I tried another offer of $14, and my offer was just ignored. Not denied even. Well what the heck did they want? I couldn't go any higher without it being the original $15. Don't put a 'make offer' option up if you aren't going to accept offers!

I kept it in my watch list until it ended, just to see if she'd sell it and what it would sell for; it didn't and she relisted it, but I unwatched it at that point (my offer expired at the end of the auction, unanswered). I would have been willing to pay the $15, but I didn't want to deal with her.

She was the only princess pony I had. Wish I still had her...she was so pretty! I renamed her 'Serena'...since I had already named another pony Tiffany a few years before after my sister's friend (it must have been before I realized they already came with names! It was the blue pony with purple hair with a red stripe in it that I now know to be named 'Sparkler'). Then I found out that there was already another princess by that name, but I never got her or any other princess, so I guess it didn't matter.

Introductions / Re: Finding something for myself

I can relate...my story is very similar to yours. Both with the identity crisis of being a mom and feeling like everything you do is for and about someone else, and needing to find your own thing, and also finding out that most of my childhood ponies were lost in a flood as well and trying to rehab what is left, and replace what is gone (check out my introduction post right before yours if you are up for a long read

Sorry about what happened to your daughter; that's horrible that someone she loves and trusts would do that to her. Your son would probably be friends with mine...he's 4 1/2 and loves all things girly and princess-related--he currently insists on being called 'Elsa' and tries a blanket around his waist, pretending it's a dress.

I hope you find peace with your collecting and repairing...it has helped me a lot!  :)
