Your boyfriend sounds so darling.  This is so sweeeet!!!

Gifts like this mean SO MUCH more than something from a store.

@Xaniss: THANK YOU!  That's a really helpful picture, though, because it's next to a pony I have!

@Salli: I am SO ON the club for pirate ponies!  I am already planning to do several more, because really, it's just too much fun, and there are so many possibilities!

I am glad you like the edging on the hat! I was really not sure I should  have done it, since my sewing skills are really embarrassingly bad, but I think it looks good, if not as good as I'd hoped.  I am glad it's working for other people!

@everyone: Thank you for all your kind words!  It's really been a mood-booster!  Y'all are so great.

I have some shiny new pinks on the way from dollyhair.com based on your suggestions, and a pretty good idea of where I want to go with it now, so y'all have been super helpful. And it is clear to me that even if she doesn't get green hair, I need to do a pirate pony WITH GREEN HAIR.  Because awesome.  <3

Also, I will really try to get that hat pattern done. I'd love to see what y'all do with it, and I'd really love it if someone tried it and came up with a better version, 'cause I'm not the best at that sort of thing.  (Which should tell you right there it's not that hard!)

@Maniah: THAT'S IT!  That's the exact one!  Thank you soooo much!

I have a buncha G1s too, so thank you, Colorscape, I'll post pics if I'm not sure about something!

Ohhhhh, she is BREATHTAKING.  The colors are so lively and she's so bright, but she looks so regal, too.  I am just gaga over the hair and the contrast between the turquoise and the pink and the stars in her hair AAAAAGH!  So much to love!  I am sure that she will be making Flutter_Valley happy for AGES to come!

Customs / "OK to customize" list?
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:57:43 AM »
I feel awful asking because I never should have lost the link, but somewhere, and I would swear it was on this site, was a general list of ponies that it was and was not okay to customize.

I've looked and looked, and can't find anything like it here (I concede I am probably looking right past it at this point), and as you might imagine, Google returns nothing helpful, since putting "customize" along with "pony" gets you pretty much nothing but how-tos.  Anyone know where I can find this list?

I recently came into a bunch of ponies and I really want to check and make sure I don't have anything that I'd be better off trading, selling, or restoring rather than customizing, and that list was a great easy and quick place to start.

I'm on the Fabri-Tac train with the others.  It's great stuff, and I wouldn't personally use anything else now that I've tried it, it is that good.  Stuff is STRONG.  My last custom, I was downright NASTY to her hair, I got her wet so many times, and nothing came out at all.

It is very thick and it dries faaast because it's acetone-based.  (It smells like it, too.  Not too strong, but noticeable.)  Because of this, it's waterproof, but it's also . . . well . . . don't get it on your pony's neck or body or whatnot by mistake, because the acetone will dissolve the paint. #learnedthehardway

Diamond: You know, I ALMOST made her eyes green, and almost decided to make her a purple and green pony. . . .

@Xaniss: I like the idea of streaks of Moonlight!

I went and looked at all my hair AGAIN.  I've got Old Bubblegum, which is a pretty good match for the pink in the trim on her hat.  Sour Grapes is a trifle cold, but holy cats, Ultraviolet is a dead-on match for the dioxazine purple I used on her legs and points.  Bougainvillea is a perfect match for her bright purple/fuchsia body.

I don't have Pussycat, so I can't judge how bright/saturated it is.  It looks light and soft on the site, not very saturated, but really vibrant colors you just can't tell from the pics.

(I have to order a bunch of new pinks, anyway, for the OTHER custom I have on the block.  "I never use pink, I don't need pink!" I said to myself before placing my first order.  I should have known!)

@ Pythia: I'mma go check out Sunlight next to her right now. I have a whole baggie.  I was thinking gold would have to be Golden Goddess, which would look really awful, but Sunlight might work.

This is my latest girl, tentatively named "Stolen Kisses."

I started her back in November and am finally finishing her up.  She has a removable pirate hat and belt, and will be getting some other accessories, too!  There will be a glittery skull and crossbones on her backside in pink, unless I think of something else iconic and piratical to go there instead.  I am really proud of her so far. I think her body fade came out really well for something I had to drybrush (it's hard to see in the second pic because of the light, but she's neon purple above and dark purple on her legs and ears and snout).  And her eyes came out so pretty!  I'm pretty much awful with eyes, so I am really pleased!

But I'm kind of stumped on her hair!  I was originally going to do two or three different shades of purple, and I still think that's a great option and what I will do if I can't decide on anything better, but I also considered black, because I just love black hair on ponies.  I am afraid black would be a little too dark even if you added purple to it.  Someone on my LJ remarked that I should have some gold or silver in there (pirate booty!).  I dunno.

So I'd really like to know what everyone else thinks!

I'll be rehairing her starting mid-week next week or thereabouts, if my guesses are accurate.

When I'm done with her, I'll post pics, and if I have time and there is interest, instructions/a pattern for the pirate hat, which is pretty simple if you aren't bent on edging the whole thing with embroidery floss and painting everything to match.  It's not a perfect pattern, but obviously it can be made to work!  And maybe the next person will be better than me at sewing stuff and be able to work out the kinks.

Note to self: saturated purple is a really translucent color with poor coverage.  Even sponging it on means you have to use so many layers that it gets kind of uneven and gross. HAVE SOMEONE AIRBRUSH THE NEXT ONE FOR YOU.

This is an amazing tutorial, really clear and easy to follow, and thorough without being overlong.  And holy cats, the finished pony is like the ideal blend of beautiful and adorable!  I LOVE her!

Customs / Re: Matte sealer?
« on: June 14, 2012, 03:03:08 PM »
Oh, jeez, jupiter just reminded me!  When I use the Liquitex matte, I thin it out with water by about 2 parts sealer to 3 parts water, and apply 2 or 3 coats of it with a 1/2" wide, flat golden taklon brush (the bristles are about an inch long), and this has seriously minimized my brushmarks to the point that on my last pony I honestly and truly *could not even see them.*  You have to work fast, and not use too much or it will drip, though! And once it starts to set you have to back off, because *that* is where the brushstrokes start showing up.

If you are working on a smaller custom or around a lot of intricately-sculpted detail, I'd use a way smaller brush with less sealer on it, and I'd keep a dry brush or some torn-up paper towels nearby to soak up any pools, puddles, or drips!

Good luck!

She is SO COOL.  I adore her!  I would never have thought of doing a skeleton pony in pink, but she totally works!  Her pink eye is what really sells it for me.  Beautiful work!

This has got to be one of the most breathtaking customs I've ever seen.  The patterns on the fabric are AMAZING.  She's AMAZING.  I love her!  Just incredible.  I am so envious of your ability to sculpt fabric.

Weighing in late to say that Liquitex is pretty great stuff.  I've yet to find a brush-on flat/matte sealer, though, that didn't give me problems with becoming tacky and attracting dust.  The Liquitex glossy coat dries pretty hard, but the matte stuff just stays . . . plastic-y.

I just used Testors Dullcote spray-on for the first time, and it's incredible stuff.  Now a big fan.  It dries fast so the spray paint smell is minimal.

Some paint, I've found, needs more time to "cure" before you paint over it or it lifts.  It's tremendously frustrating, because it's kind of impossible to tell which paints those are.  Liquitex never has, but the bottled craft paint, I've had this problem several times (including AGAIN just this week), and it's immensely aggravating.  I generally leave mine alone in a dry place for a couple of days before sealing them.

@Tabbyclaw: yes, I think you were!

To everyone else: thank you so much!  I really appreciate all the kind words.  Last week was rough, and it's nice to have the head-scritches.

I really was not sure she'd work, and I am really glad that she did!
