Pony Corral / Pony Doctors, please help diagnose my FF Butterscotch!
« on: July 05, 2015, 12:00:06 AM »
So, my mom picked up this FF Butterscotch for me at a yard sale (she knows little about ponies). Only $0.50, so it's no tragedy if she can't be saved, but based on the photos below -- is there anything that can be done/should be done with this pony? Her mane and tail show their age but are uncut. I'm not super well versed in the vagaries of pony cancer versus mold etc.

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts! Can she be saved?

Customs / Removing hair from G3.5 - newb question
« on: June 10, 2015, 11:27:52 AM »
Hi all, I hope it's OK to ask this kind of question here.

So I have a G3.5 Rainbow Dash with really gorgeous hair (still had the plastic protector on when I thrifted her). Is it possible to remove the hair from the pony intact without cutting it off with an xacto knife? Like, can I dissolve the glue from inside the head and pull the hair out?

I've looked inside the head and I see messy loops that are sticking up and covered with glue.

Pony Brag Arena / PDJ's Thriftscores of the Week for April 8!
« on: April 08, 2015, 08:57:15 PM »
Normally I wait until after I've cleaned them up to post about them, but how about I show the rough pic and then post later when they've dried from their bath?

Anyway, the only one of these that's a double for me is Applejack. I am so excited to find Lyra!!!

And I now own my VERY FIRST G2!!! Haven't looked her up yet, but she's very cool. Purple is my fave colour and I love a gem eye :D

Lady Moondancer was selling a Sticky, so I had to buy her to match the Sniffles I found at the thrift store last summer. Now they are a happy pair

Pony Corral / What sparked your desire to collect MLP?
« on: March 24, 2015, 09:39:47 AM »
I was thinking about how I'm relatively new to collecting ponies, though I've been collecting other vintage toy lines (starting with Strawberry Shortcake) for a number of years.

For a long time, I looked at ponies and thought, "That is WAY too intense of a collection to get into" given the incredible number of ponies and varieties available for collection (I'm thinking of G1 here but the same goes for other gens!)

But now I have actually started collecting MLP G1. So what changed? Well, I think it might come down to one pony ... Fizzy. I kept seeing pics of her and she just drew me in. She was my gateway collecting pony, that got me to dig out and clean my childhood ponies and start displaying them, plus my new acquisitions. Another impetus was that in the last couple of years I have been thrifting a LOT and when I see a G1 pony I cannot leave it behind. Same goes for G4 and good condition G3s now, too!

I know some of you technically never "started" collecting because you have been into ponies since the very first days in the '80s. But what turned you from a casual admirer into a collector?

Pony Brag Arena / I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR (Um, Message Board)
« on: March 16, 2015, 02:01:54 PM »
OK, this brag is not really anything special by pony market standards but I have to share it anyway. I was walking home from work today and I got this feeling, the feeling of knowing there would be a ponymail for me when I arrived.

And there WAS and I knew that it was FIZZY, a relatively common pony but one that just is so dreamy to me -- I love everything about her. Her colour scheme, her twinkle eyes, her pose. She is just one of my favourite ponies of all time and I've been waiting for the right time to get her.

Well, ShortyBoo had one for sale. Now Fizzy is mine and she is PERFECT and I just am overwhelmed by how great the MLP community is. If it weren't for the Arena and other venues, I would have to pay eBay prices for these ponies and I couldn't afford to get them.

Anyway, thanks again to ShortyBoo!

And now, here is the pic!

Pony Brag Arena / G1 Thriftscores, before and after!
« on: March 01, 2015, 12:21:36 PM »
It's been awhile since I've found any decent condition G1s at the thrift store. The last G1 I found was a pretty bait-y Parasol.

Now, this batch was in need of TLC, but didn't have haircuts or chew/bite marks! (Like poor Parasol did!)

Here is a before shot as they started their bath:

(Note: also included is an excellent condition G3 Scootaloo!)

Posey in particular was quite grimy, and she needed a lot of work with the Magic Eraser. What Apple Jack has going for her is that her hair is uncut, though her head is loose and she does have a spot under her eye.

OK, now for the afters!

Really pleased with how she came out. She does have one spot on her NDS, but her hair appears uncut. I know Posey is known for hair fade, I don't know how she rates as far as that is concerned -- opinions welcome.

Starswirl has some paint rubs (as well as some kind of paint marks that I'm working on removing), but her hair is uncut. Funny thing: someone had done her hair in perfect, tiny braids -- so perfect and uniform I wondered if they were factory! Sadly they were not, so I spent about 20 mins taking them out before the spa treatment. :)

You might ask, "Why is AJ's hair falling to the wrong side?" Well, rest assured it has since been fixed. But the reason is because I forgot the correct direction because I glanced at a curio shelf where sits my childhood AJ, which I display even though her hair is trimmed and straw-like. And it happens that this is the direction her hair falls. She's so far from perfect condition but I will always display her and treasure her! Even though I have a near-mint G1 AJ in storage. ;)

And for good measure, here is the after pic for Scootaloo:

Pony Corral / Help me ID these painted mini figurines? (G3?)

Googling hasn't helped me much -- I know you all will be able to aid a novice collector. I thrifted these today and wonder what their deal is.

Pony Brag Arena / Yesterday's Thrift Score
« on: October 25, 2014, 11:20:49 AM »
Whenever I see a G1 pony in a toy bag at the thrift store, I buy it (as I know most of you do). Now, my pony knowledge is far from complete. So initially, I thought this pony, while having an unusually long mane, had managed to receive a tail haircut. I also though, "Wow, this head is loose, but also attached to the body really well!" Then when I was washing and brushing the tail, and it was pulling out of the body, I realized I had completely misjudged this pony. She is a Brush 'n' Grow (Curly Locks, specifically)! And her mane and tail appear to be uncut! The tail ends are pretty frizzy so I'll have to borrow a hair-straightener to try fix it but overall, a great find -- the winding mechanism still works perfectly!

The Dollhouse / Help me ID this Barbie? (80s/90s)
« on: September 05, 2014, 08:39:17 PM »
OK, I for the life of me cannot remember the name of this doll. Hologram something? Dazzle, sparkle, IDEK.

The blinking light on her belt/bracelet is faint, but still works!

Introductions / Bonjour!
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:01:30 AM »
Hi all!

I'm Jenny, I'm located in Canada, and MLP is only one aspect of my 1980s toy collection -- Strawberry Shortcake is my first love but in recent years I've been expanding into other '80s toy lines. MLP is daunting because it's SO HUGE but now I just throw caution to the wind and pick up the G1s I find at thrift stores (of course, I also still own all my original childhood ponies from the '80s!) I also have a few G3s and a bunch of G4s.

I have two toy-related Tumblrs: Toys of the '80s (strictly 1980s toys) and then also Palais de Jouets ("Toy Palace," which contains toys from all eras as well as other cool girly and pastel stuff).
