The Dollhouse / Cleaning Vintage Barbies?
« on: July 26, 2023, 11:43:23 AM »
Hello all!  I recently got inspired by the Barbie Movie and took my mom's 1962 Barbie and Midge out of storage.  I'd been meaning to retrieve them for a while since I do have a small doll collection and just love vintage toys in general.  Unfortunately, due to some paper pamphlets and such disintegrating in the box, these two ladies are looking a bit grubby despite being stored safely in a doll carry case.  There also seems to have been some mildew that happened at some point, even though it doesn't smell like it's still "active" mildew (does that even make sense?  hopefully :P).  Unfortunately the mildew type stuff also seems to have gotten at their original cardboard boxes.  So I really want to get them (and their clothes, they have what they're wearing plus TONS of other clothes in the carry case) cleaned up.

While I am pretty confident cleaning up MLPs at this point, vintage Barbies are new to me!  So I was hoping someone here may have some vintage Barbie tips, or be able to point me in the direction of some reliable Barbie resources that I can utilize.

My main concerns are...

1. How delicate is the face paint (plus finger nail and toe nail paint)?  How can I was them without damaging their paint?
2. The hair!  Barbie in particular has her original hair style basically perfectly intact.  How can I make sure I don't mess this up while cleaning?
3.  What is the best procedure for cleaning the clothes?
4.  Is there anything to be done about the mildew on the boxes?  They aren't wet or stinky or anything.  I'd love to salvage these if even remotely possible.

Here are some pictures of them!!

Introductions / Long Time No See!
« on: July 25, 2023, 11:57:27 AM »
Hello all!  After a rather long hiatus, I am back!  Not quite sure why I left in the first place to be honest  :P

I think it probably had to do with needing to put quite a few of my ponies into storage since I was running out of display room, and then I suppose it was a case of out of sight, out of mind!  Lately, though, I've been feeling the urge to start collecting more ponies again (and I did actually get some fun new MLP additions a few weeks ago, guess I should post a brag!).  Plus my dad recently found a BUNCH of G1s in their original carry case at a flea market, so I am looking forward to giving those ponies a spa day.  So with all these new ponies joining the herd, it made me want to check the arena again!  It is SO nice to still see a bunch of usernames I recognize posting!

Anyway, you can call me Penny!  I collect all generations but mainly focus on G3 and G1.  I grew up with G3 and started collecting G1 around the time I graduated high school.  Now I'm in my mid/late 20s and have built up a pretty solid herd over the years between my childhood collection and ponies I've gotten since.

Outside of MLP, my collections are model horses, plushies, and some dolls as well.  I am quite involved in the model horse hobby, including live showing!

My biggest passion is horses and I am lucky to own two.  I have a semi-retired mare and a gelding I share with my mom.  The gelding is my main ride, and I also love to compete with him!  I still love riding my mare, too, we just take things easier than we used to.  I love animals in general and also have dogs and cats who I adore!

Pony Corral / Tell Me About Car Boot Sales?
« on: April 30, 2016, 08:46:44 AM »
I'm going to be studying abroad at Oxford this Summer, and since I'm going to be separated from my beloved ponies, I may as well try and find some new members for my herd while I'm there  ;)

I've heard a lot about car boot sales from the UK members on the Arena, and I've been curious about them.  So I guess I was just wondering about how you find out about them.  Is it like Yard Sales in the US where people put up posters advertising their sales?  Are there certain days of the week where I'd have the most luck finding them?  Also please tell me if you have any car boot sale tips (or tell about your best finds to give me some inspiration)!

Thanks all!

Hello all!  My Mom just got me a sewing machine for my birthday!  I hand sew kind of a lot, but I've only used a sewing machine once and it was years ago and I remember nothing.  I'm obviously going to be reading the manual, and apparently the machine is pretty beginner friendly, but I was wondering if any of you had any general tips.  Also if any of you have any recommendations for easy patterns for pony plush (or just cute and easy patterns in general) I would love it if you could tell me about them.

I'm going to be using the machine for both plushies and cosplay stuff~

Off Topic / Writing Advice
« on: June 29, 2015, 05:45:16 PM »
Hello everybody!  I know for a fact that there are tons of talented writers here on the Arena, and I was hoping you all might be able to give me a hand with something.

I have two main bad habits when I write.  The first one is switching between tenses all the time.  I'm training myself out of this, but even when I slip up it's easy enough to find it and fix it when I'm revising.

The bad habit that I'm really struggling with right now is that I lapse into a passive voice when I want to be writing in an active voice.  It's a really lousy habit, and I do it constantly.  The problem is, I have a hard time distinguishing between the active and passive voice for some reason, so I don't even realize when I do it and I have trouble seeing it even when I revise.

I was hoping that some of you may have some tips to help me with my passive voice woes!  Thanks a bunch!

Off Topic / Snake Advice!
« on: May 17, 2015, 08:27:35 AM »
Hello all!  So I'm pretty sure that at least a couple of you own/ have experience with snakes so I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

Today when my Mom (who is petrified of snakes) was going into the basement to put some laundry in the washer, she found a snake at the bottom of the stairs.  Since snakes scare her, she screamed really loudly and spooked it and now it's hiding in the basement somewhere.  I am not personally bothered by snakes, so I poked around trying to find it to get a look at it if not catch it.  We don't really have poisonous snakes in my area, just garter snakes, but my mom said this was definitely not a garter snake so I'm not going to swoop in and grab it without knowing what it is first.  I couldn't find it, though.  Based on where it was, my Mom suspects that it got in through the crawl space, but it also could have come in through the bulkhead as it was damaged in all the snow this winter and there's a gap we need to fix.

Obviously we don't want it to stay in the basement because we don't want it to starve or anything, and it's probably too dark and chilly for a cold blooded animal down there, not to mention the fact that my mom is terrified of it and is worried about being down there with it, or it somehow finding its way into the house.

So I guess my question is, if we leave the bulkhead of the basement open, will it be able to get up a fairly steep stair case by itself and leave?  Will it even know/want to leave? If not, what are some ways I can try to lure it out from hiding and try and capture it and bring it out.  If I have any doubts about the species and if it is poisonous or not I'll just put a box over it and call animal control.  On the other hand, if I know what it is I've caught enough garter snakes in my day that I'm confident that I could catch it and carry it outside my self.

Any advice is much appreciated!  (also mods, I didn't know if WYP was a better place for this, so feel free to move it if it is!!)

Off Topic / Do Any of You Have Science Related Careers?
« on: February 27, 2015, 08:01:45 AM »
Hi all!  For one of my courses this semester at my college I need to do a short interview with someone who works in science.  It could be anyone from a science teacher to a researcher in a lab, as long as it is "science-y", it works!  If any of you  have such a career and wouldn't mind answering a few quick questions (less than 10), it would be super if you could PM me!  It's just generic stuff like "What is your favorite part of your career" or "what advice would you give to a college student interested in your career".  Thanks so much!  ^.^

Pony Corral / Blizzard Ponies! (pic heavy!)

Now that the driveway and all the path ways around my house are finally clear, I decided to climb over the snow banks into my backyard to take some pony pictures!

Off Topic / Tips for Inking with a Nib Pen?
« on: January 23, 2015, 05:01:25 PM »
Hi all, Do any of you have experience working with nib pens? Recently, I decided that I really wanted to start inking my drawings with a nib pen (I think that's what it's called anyway, the kind with the nib you can switch and you dip it in the ink).  In a lot of ways, I really like it.  I like how I can control the thickness of my lines, and how it doesn't smudge when I erase my pencil lines.  Plus I just think it looks really nice.

But I've been having problems with it.  The main one is that when I'm drawing with it a giant blot of ink will just come out of my pen for no discernible reason and puddle on my page (today a drawing I was really proud of was nearly ruined by that but I managed to fix it with white out and some strategic rearrangement of my character's hair).  I looked up a possible cause, but what I mostly came up with was that I need to wash the wax coating off of my nibs, but I already did that and it still happens.  Also, sometimes ink just stops coming out even when there looks like there is plenty of ink in the pen.

Could it be a problem with my ink?  I noticed that most of the time this happens, it is with my black ink.  Could it be too thick or too thin?  Or is this just something that happens if the ink is a lousy brand?  Or is it the nibs themselves?  Or is there something I could be doing technique wise to fix this issue?

Thanks a bunch!  ^.^  Any advice about this problem, or just using these pens in general, would be much appreciated!

For Christmas I acquired a lovely Princess Royal Blue who cleaned up to be somewhere between near mint and excellent.  Her tinsel is even still really nice.  In the photograph it looks kind of frizzy but it just got all static-y since the air is pretty dry in my house right now, but it is really really nice and smooth generally.  She came with her princess hat, and she also has a tail ribbon (metallic gold colored).  Is this her original tail ribbon?  I checked the wiki page but there wasn't a color listed.  Also, just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity, what would she go for in this condition with her hat and ribbon (provided it is her ribbon)?  I'm not looking to sell her since she was a gift and I really like her, too, but I've been wondering.  Thanks in advance!

Anyway, here's the picture showing her hat and ribbon.

Pony Corral / MIB Pony Question
« on: December 02, 2014, 11:06:18 AM »
I was thinking, are there any ponies that no one has MIB/MOC/MIP?  Like, maybe they exist, but they're shoved in someone's attic or basement or something and no one knows about them?  Or are all of them present and accounted for in terms of being MIB at least somewhere?  I'm assuming that for non-Nirvanas there are at least a couple (if not many, in terms of MIB anyway, in the case of some) floating around for each pony even if they are rare, but who knows.

I don't know if this is a silly question, but I've been wondering about it lately

Pony Corral / Anything I should know about cleaning a G2?
« on: July 17, 2014, 07:19:35 AM »
I was recently lucky enough to encounter a G2 pony (Bright Berry) "in the wild" and while she is actually in very nice shape, I feel like she will be gorgeous once she spends a day in the pony spa!  Is there anything special about cleaning up a G2 pony that I should be aware of?  Or can I just do my usual scrub in the sink and some shampoo and conditioner that I use for G1 and G3 ponies?  I guess I'm mostly worried about dislodging her eye gems since she has both of them.  Thanks!

Trader & Shipping Support / How do I Leave Positive Feedback?
« on: May 15, 2014, 03:35:14 PM »
Hi there!  I was just wondering how to leave positive feedback (like the smiley faces that show up on people's profiles) for a member here on the arena that I just bought something from.  The shipping was so fast and everything that I just want to be sure that I give them good feedback.  I've never bought anything on here before so I'm not sure how to do this yet.  Thanks!

Pony Corral / Spring Photo Shoot for Flowerbelle (pic heavy!)
« on: April 21, 2014, 02:28:35 PM »
I put some braids in Flowerbelle's mane and tail today and took her outside for a quick photo shoot with all of the Blue Bell flowers in my back yard.  It seemed very fitting!   ^.^  I hope you like the photos!

The Dollhouse / Want to Buy: Pinkie Cooper Pepper Doll
« on: April 18, 2014, 04:22:22 PM »
If any of you have an extra Pepper Parsons Pinkie Cooper doll, I am very interested in buying her from you.  I don't mind if she is loose (if it is easier to ship her that way) or MIB so long as she has her purse and full outfit.  I'd prefer the version with the headband, but I don't mind either way.  Please let me know if you can sell me one!

I really want her, and my Target is sold out of her.  I was hoping I could find Pepper when I went there yesterday, but she was sold out.  Thanks!!
