Pony Brag Arena / 50 Cent Brag! (And a future restore project.)
« on: July 08, 2014, 04:08:49 PM »
No, not a brag about the rapper; I paid 50 cents for these two ladies! Normally each would have been 50 cents, but it was half off everything day at Goodwill!

Flat Foot Blossom: When I found her she was brown! I thought, "Ooo, this will be a good sunfading and restoring project!" I have never restored a pony before and wanted to try my hand at it. But, it turned out she just needed a good wash! I wish I had thought to take a before and after picture.

Now there are a few issues revealed by the wash (looks like I'm in for restoring after all). She has a small spot on her inner thigh that is a very faded light pink, so light, its really hard to see at first glance. (Had to take several pictures to capture it well, but you can see it in the the first a little and in the one above, if you're looking for it.) Is this regrind or some kind of restore-able mark? I've only ever seen pictures of regrind where the pink is very bright, so I'm not sure. I don't seem to see any other spots like that on her. On the other side she seems to have smooze? Can anyone more experienced confirm?

And then there's Baby Firefly! After the difference between before and after in Blossom, I thought ahead to do some pics for this girl.

Not too bad! Now after a wash:

Turned out almost perfect! Just two small pin prick dots behind her ear on the other side. I like how her bangs flip backward! Not sure where I'll put her since I've only been keeping G4s and one G1 from my childhood.

Maybe her and Dash can hang out.

So I have been wanting to do a G1 to G4 Cotton Candy, and I have some extra Kitten Dollyhair that would probably work nicely. I've been thinking of using Pinkie Pie as a base, but she's a little too dark. Could I bleach her to lighten her shade? I know that could make any paint I add to her fade, but since her cutie mark is white, would it matter? How would her eye look if I bleach her?

I know I could just do a FBR, but although I've been getting much better with hiding brushstrokes, I still don't like the look of my FBRs. Is bleaching a reasonable alternative since Pinkie is pretty close?

Pony Corral / Show me... styled hair!
« on: June 10, 2014, 05:45:31 PM »
So, zombienixon started a topic asking "Do you style your ponies hair?" and I love the pictures some members posted! So, show me your styled ponies from all generations! (And/or go to zombienixon's thread to talk about whether or not you choose to style your ponies!)

I love trying to style ponies like the characters from FiM. I would say the vast majority of my work on ponies has been that. I've styled all my own ponies, and friends of mine have wanted theirs styled like the show; I've had a lot of fun doing it. Here's Sunset Shimmer;

Customs / Villian Work! Chrysalis Crown Attemps
« on: June 01, 2014, 03:10:16 PM »
I couldn't leave my poor Chrysalis with the paper crown she came with in the collectors set, so I finally made attempts at a sculpted crown.

First attempt was way too big! It might work for a talking size Chrysalis (if there was one) but much to big for a brushable. It was a good way to learn a general method of creating crowns, though. Second attempt cracked badly, and I could tell again that it was too big. Again, third attempt was too big, but much closer. I think it was probably the best overall attempt, but I made a smaller forth attempt and decided to settle for it. I tried to get the points a little bit closer together (especially the center two) but I didn't get as good of smoothness to it.

It's a bit too tall, but otherwise I think its okay for now. I may attempt a shorter version in the future (her hair cut could use some minor alterations too), but after two days of work on this project I'm taking a break for a while.

'Think I'll let her party with Pinkie Pie for now.

Next up; I need to paint my Sombra custom. I haven't worked on him since winter. A lot of work to do!

I'm just a beginner (this is the first project I've posted), so I don't mind if you have some constructive criticism.

So I was looking into some of my old G1s from my childhood and noticed some strange things. I don't have much collectors knowledge on early generations, so forgive me if my questions are silly. :yikes:

First is my Baby Sparkle Gusty. It took me a while to identify her because the date on her foot doesn't match the My Little Wiki description. Her foot clearly says 1984, but her description says she's an 89. Any idea why that would be?

As you can see, she's just a regular Baby Sparkle Gusty (pretty good shape too ^.^). I couldn't get a good picture of her foot due to the sparkles, but it doesn't have a 4 that can be mistaken for a 9.

Next is my Baby Tippytoes. She has a strange blue gradient in her tail and the first part of her mane. Is this just a dye job done by the owner before me? The color doesn't fade with washing.

I intend to trade her once I get everything in order with the other items I have for trade, so it would be nice to be able to explain what's up with Baby Tippytoes.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Customs / Question about Cleaning up Arcylic Paint Bleed on G4
« on: April 19, 2014, 12:02:59 AM »
So I decided to repaint the cutie mark on a custom G1 to G4 Surprise I made, seeing as I am a bit better with smaller work after a few projects. When I removed the cutie mark though, there was a pink bleed into the plastic.

After Removal

I tried nail polish remover, but of course that didn't quite clean it up. I even tried just painting over it, but the new cutie mark job does not totally cover the old one's bleed. Do I have to sunfade it, or is there another method that would create a clean base for me to paint on? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Customs / Hairing Question about Working on Custom G4: Maud Pie
« on: April 12, 2014, 12:05:41 AM »
With the G4 Easter ponies coming out, Lilly Blossom has been available again. With :muffin: Pony being a rare find (I have her but don't want to destroy her), I thought Lilly Blossom would be an acceptable bate for making a custom Maud Pie brushable. True, she is a bit more purple than Maud, but I think I can make it work (I hate actually painting a whole bate and prefer to use the natural base).

Now my next problem is what hair should I buy. I'm just feeling uncertain about shade. I think going a little dark would be good since Lilly Blossom is a bit darker skinned, but I'm not familiar with how purple hair looks in real life from the places I usually go. Does anyone have experience in buying KatSilk Nylon Purple 1 Doll Hair 809 from RestoreDoll, Purple 1 from DollyHair, or Mulberry Crush from DollyHair? Do any of these look like a good match for Maud? Or does someone have another suggestion for a good match?

I would be super appreciative for any advice!

Any advice for how to make her clothing would also be great! Perhaps there's a good pattern for G4 clothing out there?

Introductions / Hello from Indianapolis
« on: April 11, 2014, 10:14:44 PM »
Hi! I'm a G4 customizer and collector, so I wanted to join in on the forum to get advice and improve beyond the level I've been able to get to so far. I originally registered last year, but got distracted with school and planning a wedding. Here's some personal information that was suggested to provide!

How old are you?: 25

Where do you live?: Indianapolis, Indiana

Do you work or attend school? Profession or major?: I am about to graduate with my Masters in Social Work this May. I'll be working as mental health professional and therapist. My ultimate goal is to obtain my Licensed Clinical Social Worker certification.

Who are the important people in your life?: I live with my husband and two best guy friends. We're all G4 fans and collectors! Between the 4 of us we have 3 cats; Kwazii (my husband's and my cat), Fuku, and Rybek.

Ponies: I have almost all of the available G4 ponies (all of the ponies from the show and a few randoms) and have made a Pipsqueek, Pinkamena, Pokie Pierce (for my friend), Surprise (for my friend) and Future Twilight. I'm very into styling their hair, and I've gotten pretty good at it over the years thanks to online tutorials and much practice. I am also working on making Fleur di Lis, Sombra, Nurse Redheart, Radiance, Fausticorn, Screw Loose, Maud Pie and some OCs. I tend to stop a project after rehairing, as I get nervous about painting cutie marks.

As I child I collected G1 as well, so I have quite a few, but they aren't displayed or part of projects like my G4s.

How long have you been collecting?: I've had G1s since before I can remember, but I've had and worked on G4s since Fall of 2011.

What made you want to collect ponies?: I love the G4 show and there aren't a lot of fandoms that provide so much lovable merchandise. I really got into collecting when I realized I could make everyone's hair look pretty show accurate.

My OC: As a G4 fan, of course I have and SI OC. lol Her name is Dr. Maslyn and she is a therapist in non-canon Ponyville. Her cutie mark is the symbol for psychology.
