The Dollhouse / Tokidoki Barbie
« on: September 22, 2015, 02:58:46 PM »
So there were two Tokidoki Barbies released recently-   a very small edition one with purple hair, and one with pink hair.  I kinda wanted the purple one, I won't lie.  I am a total Tokidoki fan! But she was really impossible to get/find.  The pink one sold fast too.

I just happened to be looking on ebay for her- and the purple hair is seriously.... selling for $850-$950  DOLLARS !!!

This is a plastic doll made by Mattel that doesn't even have joints.  She is cute but OMG!

So did you get one of these things, and if you had, wouldn't you be tempted to sell her at that price? I probably would be if I had managed to nab her!  I love the way the doll looks, but I would probably love $950 even more, hehe

Here is the coveted doll

The Dollhouse / 35th Anniversary Strawberry Shortcake
« on: September 15, 2015, 06:29:41 PM »
Came out recently and of course I had to get the little vinyl doll (exactly like the original- available at Target)

and now the Rag Doll!  There appear to be two different rags available- one with blue eyes and one with brown- no idea why.  I got the blue-eyed one from B&N.

She's so cute!!!

Customs / Frank n Furter custom- anyone know who made this?
« on: September 15, 2015, 03:12:31 PM »
Making the rounds on my facebook feed- and a friend really wants one made (although I doubt he can afford it honestly people tend to underestimate the cost of sculpted art ponies)

Anyone know who made this ?  Hopefully not a fully retired customizer (but likely is)

Ooop-- nevermind- answered my own question with the help of the gods of Google!

In case anyone wondered, it is Mari Kasurinen, a pop art artist.  I don't know that she was ever on the Arena as she is more of a Pop art person than a pony person...

Off Topic / SO ridiculously excited about Episode 7 (Star Wars)
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:33:36 AM »
I think it will be awesome !!!!

* original cast will be involved
* MUPPETS
* Director seems like he will do a good job

Disney spent SO MUCH MONEY for the franchise (so they can make yet more movies and merch) so hopefully they threw down for some seriously talented screenwriters this time as well.

I know the movie seems unlikely to live up to the hype-  AND that it is basically a giant commercial for tons of merchandising and more movies and yet more merch- but the better the movie the more merch is likely to be made and sold so there is that right?!

I wish it was coming out this month and not CHRISTMAS that is way too long...

Optimistic article about how movie will redeem the franchise: http://whatculture.com/film/10-signs-star-wars-7-will-redeem-the-franchise.php/5

Pony Brag Arena / the little Power Ponies! And Sci Twi
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:51:36 AM »
I finally got my SDCC loot from Hasbro! It took foreeeever.  I actually really LOVE Pinkie - her outfit is so well made!  I will probably toss the box though- as cute as it is (and it does pain me to throw it out since I'm sure half the value of this stupid exclusive was in the package) - it is SO HUGE

Probably will toss most of Twilight's box too - maybe keep the interior.  Isn't Sci-Twi super cute?!!  I LOVE "Science-Nerd-Twilight"  Finally a science doll!

ALso got these mini Power Ponies.  They fit better than the big ones :D

Pony Corral / Clear sparkly Twilight Ornament !
« on: August 12, 2015, 11:56:27 AM »
This is slightly old news-  but since it is the first time she has been in stock, I figured I'd let you guys know too!

MOST of the G4 ornaments (in my humble opinion) have not been particularly cute, but this is one that I saw and was really impressed!

She was out of stock (or maybe it was because she was a preview) for a really long time- but I got an email notification today that she was in stock- and ordered her!

Even though she is kind of expensive-  most cute ornaments are, and I am a sucker for glittery candy-clear ponies like these ... AND I like to get at least one cute/special ornament a year...  so I got her!

Here's the link...

There is a Rainbow Dash too- but she isn't as cute, and she is not clear and sparkly. She was an easy pass for me...

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Centaur Sunglow?
« on: August 10, 2015, 10:30:37 AM »
Was looking around on the Hallmark site for the new Rainbow Brite Ittys-  and stumbled on this T-shirt!

Is it from a cartoon or something?  Seems like an odd t-shirt for Hallmark to just have for the heck of it, doesn't it?

Pony Brag Arena / Coco Pommel!
« on: August 03, 2015, 10:00:12 AM »
I got a FS Coco Pommel for pretty cheaps off ebay! (Maud came from TRU lol)

Coco majorly needs hair styling- but her mane is nice and soft, and she does have a nice thick bang that will curl nicely!   I know the official version of her will come with plastic clothes, but I want a collar/tie like the one she wears in the cartoon- and I'd prefer that it be fabric...  I'm not much of a seamstress, but I might be able to manage something as simple as this hopefully!

I ended up getting Maud and Daring, and then added the 3 pack Equestria girls with Photo Finish that was on clearance, to get free shipping :D

VERY disappointed and not tempted in any way at all about this hideous Celestia.  I mean really? Another colored-on over-priced talking Celestia? Not even a recolor?

Also- via another forum, I have learned that the HasbroToyShop will have its exclusives (such as Pinkie chicken and nerd-Twilight) on July 28th.  That info sounds legit as the exclusives are almost always released on a Tuesday in the shop.  I am sure that they will have plenty of exclusives from the pony line to go around, just like last year and the year before...

Pony Corral / Hikari Rainbow Dash!
« on: June 04, 2015, 11:19:30 AM »
So do you guys remember those pretty Rainbow Dash Hikari figures previewed at Toyfair?  Well the first one appears to be up for pre-order at Gemini!

Unfortunately, it is the original-color one, and not any of the gradients- so I think I will skip her since there are prettier one down the road-  but if you wanted one in show accurate colors, now is your chance! :D

Oh dang, I just learned that Entertainment Earth had the metallic one as an exclusive- and it is already sold out!

The Dollhouse / BJD jewelry?
« on: May 21, 2015, 12:35:10 PM »
So I really like when BJD companies/artists do metal jewelry/crowns/helmets/corsets/shoes.  I want some of it for my dolls, but usually it is only available when you buy a fancy set, or if loose (like Chateau has a helmet I love) it fits only a specific doll and is very expensive to boot.

So I took a lost wax casting class.  It was easier than I expected - and also a little harder, as you basically have to CARVE wax (some very soft and unforgiving of much handling) and some very hard (which takes a lot of patience and is unforgiving if you clip off more than you should have).  I can sculpt just a bit but carving is so much different.

But I really want some doll jewelry/crowns/helmets/ect.  And nobody is making this stuff for me!

So here is my first project.   I really wanted THIS crown or something like it:

This is the Snow Queen by Tomislav Tomic (fairy tail illustrator)

I decided to use this thin soft wax- because the thick hard wax just wouldn't work with this design. But I made it way too elaborate, overhandled it- and... had to start all over.  On my second try, I simplified the design a lot. I added a helmet piece because a) I like helmets and b) I'm not entirely sure how it would be easily worn otherwise...  It was also too wide to fit into the cheaper casting bucket- so I narrowed a pretty good amount and shortened some spikes a lot.

I added some blue wax "dots" with a dental wax pen- definitely a technique I need to practice a lot more before my next project... I then attached blue "wax wire" to act as sprues (so the metal coudl fill evenly). Here it is ready to get cooked!

Since it is a Snow Queen crown- I really wanted to do it in silver-  but it turns out that silver casting is super expensive.  Also-  while I like what I made- I will be the first to admit my design has a lot of issues.  There are uneven places the triangles on top of the spikes are uneven- the "dots" not of uniform size or spaced very well- and really a lot that makes me blush.  But I didn't have time to do it all over again- and so rather than scrap the idea I decided to cast it in something cheap and see if I could sand out the issues- and try a better crown later-  :)

So I had it cast- imperfections and all!  I was going to get it in bronze (which is surprisingly cheap) but let the casting assistant guy (art student) talk me into copper - he was so cute and really thought it would look cool in gold  ^.^

Here it is so far-  I still need to pick it up, clip the "sprues" off- and sand it and finish it- but I am liking how it is turning out!  (the crown bit will fit onto the helmet bit and I will solder the pieces together once I get it sanded and polished)

So far I've sunk a fair bit of time into it- so I am starting to see why this stuff isn't cheap, hehe  I guess if I ever get a design that is really nice and perfect-  what most jewelry people do is make a resin cast of the object, get it wax injected- and then cast a bunch of copies.  But I'm not there yet...

Still- I do wish that more people made doll accessories out of metal!  Have any of you done lost wax casting or metal work of any kind? I tried pretty hard to talk the art students/my teacher into getting into BJD accessories- and they seemed very interested (although they are not DOLL people if you know what I mean) but I don't really think they will be able to do much without an actual doll in hand to make it for- and I wasn't about to give them one of mine

Oh and my inspiration? Looking at all of the ridiculously amazing helmets and bodices and crowns by Marina Bychova  http://www.enchanteddoll.com/

I have no idea how she manages her incredibly complex and intricate designs- she is such an inspiration!

Trader & Shipping Support / Grumpy about flakes...
« on: May 06, 2015, 04:03:04 PM »
You know, sometimes I think we should have a list or some way of providing feedback for flakey buyers/sellers.

Like for example, SAY someone contacts you asking to buy something, you confirm the price, check on the shipping, and then once everything is all packed up, the person flakes out and decides not to buy it after all.    >_<

This seems to happen a lot on the Arena I am sad to say.  I always wonder how often they do this with others, since their is no way of letting people know about these people (their actions don't warrant a negative or neutral under Arena rules).
