Arts & Crafts Corral / The Avatar Exchange 2020 - Round 3 - Complete
« on: August 09, 2020, 01:27:35 PM »
Welcome to Round 3 of
The Avatar Exchange!

What’s the Avatar Exchange?

Each round you'll get a secret partner (who you will keep secret until you reveal the avatar) and will have three weeks to deliver an avatar based on your partner's form. The artwork itself can be traditionally or digitally made, as long as it is turned into a digital icon ready for your partner to use. The exchange will run for as long as there is interest, and you can sign up for as many rounds as you like. Feel free to jump in at any time!

Previous rounds:
Round 1
Round 2

Guidelines:
  • You should deliver two versions of your icon: a 150x150 version for use here at the Arena (under 60k, please) and a larger, un-cropped version. If you do pixel ponies, the second can be waived as a larger version may not exist.
  • Original artwork only, please (all art should be made by you, and please do not use current or old adoptable bases unless you modify the lineart significantly to make it unique for your partner).
  • Please deliver on time. If you have not delivered on time for the round, your ability to participate in future exchanges will be suspended until you make up your part.
  • Artwork should abide by Arena standards of content, of course.
  • When your partner posts the avatar, please make sure you download it before using – your partner is not obliged to host the image after it has been delivered.
  • Your sign-up post should contain the word apple somewhere in order to signify to me that you've read the rules.
  • Do not reveal your partner before you're done! If you have any questions, please message me and I can PM your partner.
  • Post your finished avatar to this thread when you are done. You may post the avatar up to three days before the deadline, but no earlier, please.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in this thread!

Customs / Customizers' chit-chat thread
« on: August 03, 2020, 03:33:01 AM »
It's been a while since we had one of these!

What are you currently working on? How's it going? Feel free to discuss your current WIPs, plans for future customs, vent, share your success stories and tips & tricks, whatever comes to mind.

I have three ponies in progress at the moment. One is the Monochrome swap pony, one is for a private trade (just finished the sculpting on that one, I'm excited to move on to painting!), and one is probably the most dragged-out art project I've ever had, a custom I started in 2010. I've shared some WIP pics of that one along the way, don't have one at hand to post here but I recently shared pics in some Facebook groups. As soon as I finish the sculpting on the swap pony I can streamline my process and prime all of them for painting. :)

I should also start designing a pony for a friend - I gave her a "gift card" as a birthday or Christmas present years ago, promising to make her a custom pony. She recently reminded me about this so I guess I must finally come through  :P

Customs / Has anyone customised the G4 reboot styling ponies?
« on: July 03, 2020, 02:10:39 PM »
I spotted these today at my local supermarket, at least I think they were the Roadtrip ones (https://data.mlpmerch.com/brushables/body/reboot-styling-pony/). We get so few new ponies here, I wasn't even familiar with these until now.

I was intrigued by the hard plastic, I wonder what they would be like to customise? How are their heads attached and would it be difficult to rehair them because of the hard plastic...? Has anyone worked with these before, or ponies made of similar material? They were pretty expensive to be used as custom baits so I didn't get one but I might go back... They had Fluttershy and Rarity at least, and maybe Pinkie Pie.

Customs / Carousel pony Sunny Bunny ~ Private swap with AnnaPommes!

AnnaPommes and I discussed a private custom swap many years ago but it wasn't until last autumn we agreed to finally do something about it! Anna already sent me a gorgeous pony earlier this spring, and I was finally able to complete my half of the trade, although I have yet to ship her to her new owner. ^.^

Meet Sunny Bunny, inspired by the G1 merry-go-round ponies!

(Link to full size image)

I was originally planning to do a pastel yellow pony with yellow hair, but after coming up with the carousel idea and deciding on the bait to use - a core pose Rainbow Dash - I thought I would keep the blue body. She had some highlighter marks which were not covered by the sculptwork so I gave her a full body repaint. All sculpting was done with Apoxie Sculpt. I think my apoxie (and my sealant likewise...) may be past its best before date, haha. It begins to cure very quickly so I must work fast. The results aren't quite as neat as I would like but it was good practice and I'm pretty happy with the overall look of my first MGR pony! I'm much more confident when it comes to painting. Sculpting is fun but painting tiny details makes my heart sing. ^.^

The pony was rehaired with Lemonade, Gingerbread and something which I though was Caramel Cream but was probably a blend of two colours in a mislabelled bag... I managed to use up some of my old stock!

Her head still turns and I love how poseable she is. :D

Arts & Crafts Corral / Playful pony lineart
« on: May 19, 2020, 08:03:06 AM »
I've been itching to do a new adoptable but real life always comes in the way! Yesterday however I decided to take a break from my viva preparations and sketched this pony.

Digital art has been a bit of a hassle since my tablet is so old it's not compatible with my current laptop/system (Win 8). I'm thinking of buying a new one, but in the meantime, I realised there are art apps for smartphones! Duh :P So I installed an app called ArtFlow and inked the lines using a cheap touch screen stylus. It worked surprisingly well!

The pose was inspired by one of the Panini sticker album stickers (Tickle, I think). I'll open these as adopties later this week or early next week!

I can possibly offer larger versions of the different species as colouring pages later if there is interest. ^.^

It's time to bring back…

The Avatar Exchange!  :good:

What’s the Avatar Exchange?

Years ago, Eviecorn used to run this fun monthly digital art swap, which went on for several rounds. I thought it would be nice to revive this exchange, especially now that most of us are still self-isolating! ^.^

Each round you'll get a secret partner (who you will keep secret until you reveal the avatar) and will have three weeks to deliver an avatar based on your partner's form. The artwork itself can be traditionally or digitally made, as long as it is turned into a digital icon ready for your partner to use.
  • Your sign-up post should contain the word pansy somewhere in order to signify to me that you've read the rules.

Off Topic / Cooking & baking
« on: March 22, 2020, 01:14:02 AM »
Now with many of us spending more time at home, I thought if would be fun to discuss the food we're making and maybe share some recipes!

What are you cooking/baking today?
What's your favourite thing to make?
Any recommended recipes/websites/books?

I've been baking a lot of bread lately - not because of any shortages but because I love homemade bread and this time of social distancing has been the perfect opportunity for small comforts like that. :) I have some barley flour which I'm trying to use up but my success with that has varied, it doesn't always rise properly even though I mix it with wheat. I'd also love to try making sourdough bread at some point! Mum has a book with instructions on how to make a sourdough starter from scratch, maybe I'll try that.... some day  :P

For dinner today I was planning to make this Garlicky Cashew and Broccoli Stir-Fry, I love this recipe! Simple, quick, tasty (although I recommend serving it with plain rice instead of the couscous, and if you're not vegan, a bit of butter works quite nicely for some extra flavour). However, I just realised I may be out of cashews so maybe I'll postpone this to next week and think of something else today.

Customs / Baby Zodiacke ~ Manuscript pony
« on: March 13, 2020, 03:04:48 PM »
Some of you may remember Lindisfarne, a manuscript themed pony I made for my MA thesis supervisor as a gift back in 2014. I've been wanting to do another ever since and now I finally decided to put those plans into action. Baby Zodiacke was made for a friend's & colleague's birthday and I chose to base my design on one of the 16th-century manuscripts she studied for her PhD.

(Click here to view the full-size image)

I had to complete this quickly so I decided to go with a baby pony, the bait was a discoloured Baby Blossom. Fully repainted in acrylics, sealed with polyurethane varnish and rehaired in several colours of nylon hair from my stash, not all of them were in their original bags so I can't name all the colours. A couple of different browns and blondes, Black Magick, and a blend of two reds (Candy Apple and Cherry Pie, I think). The pics don't show it very well but the body colour has some intentional blemishes to mimic 500-year-old parchment.
The lettering is a little smudged too and I'm not even sure anymore if that's intentional or not, but it suits the pony so it doesn't really matter.  The original manuscript has some red smudges, too, but I left those out.

Her symbol is a Zodiac diagram and I also included a few lines of the explanatory text following the diagram in the manuscript. I wasn't faithful scribe, due to the small space I had to divide the lines differently and drop some redundant words (the original has "This Figure Aboue", for example). Other than that, I tried to preserve the original spelling and abbreviations and replicate the scripts as well as I could in such a tiny size. Her NDS is blank.

Despite the detailed work this was a quick custom, perhaps 5-6 hours or so spread over four days.

Customs / Holiday Custom Swap for Aflame ~ Cinnamon Choc
« on: January 07, 2020, 08:27:37 AM »
Finally got round to editing and posting the photos!

Cinnamon Choc (I hope that's what I called her? ) was made for Aflame in the Holiday custom swap. Aflame mentioned straw curls and TAF designs in her form so that's what I decided to go with.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The bait was recycled (got her in a bait lot with other ponies in various stages of customisation) so I'm not sure which pony it was originally, most likely Cotton Candy. I stripped off the old paint, gave her a new FBR in dark green and sculpted part of the symbol with Apoxie for a 3D effect. Her hair is a mix of six or seven different colours. I hope you like her! :lovey:

Customs / Show me your green ponies!
« on: November 21, 2019, 09:30:54 AM »
I used to love the show me threads back when the customs forum was super active! And we would have them often.

Green is one of my favourite colours (and I may have some plans...  ;) ) so I would love to see your green customs! Especially ones with green bodies, although green hair with a different body colour works too. Hasbro customs welcome, let's see those Mimics! :P

Here are a few of my older ones, I haven't made too many...
