Off Topic / Reached 10k posts - again!
« on: May 07, 2023, 08:12:15 AM »
Do we still do these?  :silly:

I had some 11k posts before the drop that happened a while ago as the ties to the old Arena were cut. I think I lost around 2,000-3,000. I should've taken notes! Well, I'm back to 10k so join me in a little party!

Customs from my imagination :)
(2 part project that looks good on their own and together )

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

I do mostly MLP art drawing and painting trad and digi (havent done any for a while though) and I do horse customisations including sculpting and painting (air brush) I also do some sculpting and resin crafts (not MLP or horsey)  ^.^

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I have always liked aesthetic activities and drawing was always my fave thing to do at school started drawing when I could hold a crayon and mold plasticine :) and when I was 4 I got my first pony - apple jack and I was smitten from then on and started drawing MLPs and horses from then, and 39 years later im still doing it just with better materials XD

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

Yes I used to do a lot of coloured pencil drawings but I now use more acrylic paint, I did try water colour but it never behaved for me XD I also used air-dry clay for most of my modelling and customising but i use some 2 part apoxie for some things now.

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?
What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?

I think my horse/pony drawing has got better but theres always room for improvement with practice that goes for sculpting and customising to. I hope to get more in to resin soon but its quite expensive and as I live in the UK its a lot to send to other countries for swaps as much as I enjoy doing them :/. I have taken commissions for art and horse customs and am open to do them if anyone wants to have a mini me of their horse :)

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

I would say "practice makes better" and even if you go wrong you can try again , and be open to others advice they may have an easier way to draw or sculpt  a certain thing you are finding hard to.

May is MerMay! Join me in a fun challenge where you get to draw or craft seaponies, merponies and other ponies enjoying the seaside. Follow the daily prompts or come up with your own version of the challenge!

This is no contest. There are no sign-ups or prizes. You can start or quit at any time. You can do quick sketches/doodles or something more elaborate, the choice is yours. You can draw or do crafts, all media are allowed - even photography! You can do all separately or work them into one image/piece. Post daily or do a compilation. And finally, if daily prompts are too much, you can do one per week, for example by choosing among the ponies listed for that week. These are just ideas, there are no actual rules, it's just a fun challenge to create more pony art  ^.^

Feel free to ask questions and to use this thread for general chatting along the way.

Happy MerMay!  :art:

Crystal-Sushi: The start of my G1-style sets, the Cloudpuff Ponies, from 2020

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

I work almost exclusively in digital art right now! I used to work in more traditional mediums but having moved twice and with most of my supplies in storage still, digital is the easiest at the moment lol. I am also hoping to get into 3D modelling and printing soon as one of my fiance's friends has been so generous to give us a 3D resin printer so hopefully I can bring some of my non-standard pony designs to life!

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I have been drawing and creating things for as long as I can remember ( I can recall making the moth character from A Bugs' Life out of blu-tack and paddlepop sticks when I was 3-4?), and I have been drawing MLP since I was at least 5, as that's when I got my first pony (G3 Star Catcher!) on my birthday! I guess I never really stopped XD

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

Like I said, I used to work only in traditional mediums, but now am pretty much entirely digital. I was self-taught until University, and it really boosted my skills in my opinion, especially doing life drawing! I'd like to think my style is a bit more anatomically grounded now, although that's regarding my own art style as opposed to when I draw ponies (where I'm usually trying to emulate a pre-existing style)  ;)

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

I've definitely improved in regards to weight/composition of characters (pony and otherwise) but general pony anatomy is still a bit tricky for me, so that's an area I'd like to improve on, especially as I'd love to have a crack at animating them one day (my degree is specifically in animation haha).

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?
I'm probably a bit too ambitious, as I'm not the best at motivating myself to do projects but I can dream...!
Pony-wise it's 3d modelling some of my non-standard designs with hope of making them as actual ponies (I'm mainly thinking of the Flutterpillars here) and possibly attempting to animate something in the MLP & Friends style.

Non pony-wise, I have been working on a webcomic idea for the last... 8? 9? years and I'm hoping to finally publish it on WebToon! It's a magical girl/action series set in the 2000s, with a fruit theme (and no not Tokyo Mew Mew haha)

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

I'd say keep on going, don't give up! You can only improve with practice! Don't be afraid to accept (respectful) critiques either though and always be open to learning new techniques!

Color pencils

What kind of art and/or crafts do you do?

I do a lot of pencil drawings.  Some I will go over with pen and color with watercolors.  When I was younger I had an illegal copy of Photoshop , and I loved coloring pictures in that. But that computer died, and I have never gotten around to getting it again.  I also feel as I get older, technology is getting so advanced, that today's Photoshop is probably way out of my league.  I see the digital art produced these days by other people, and I wish I could make things the way they do.  I'm in awe.  I also like to make sculptures in clay. And just recently I dipped my toe into trying to make custom ponies!

When did you first become interested in art and/or crafts? What brought you into MLP art in particular?

I have always drawn since I was little.  I was just drawn to it I guess   MLP in particular, I remember as a child drawing on large pieces of cardboard with colored chalks to make a "map" I guess of where my ponies lived.  It had roads, grass, etc.  You can imagine what my white so-soft Paradise looked like after playing on colored chalk   I was forced out of ponies for the rest of my childhood until I got into college and found some ponies at a flea market.  Then I started drawing ponies, creating new ponies, etc. I spent many hours at college doodling between classes.

Has your style, preferred media etc. changed along the way?

My style, yes.  If you saw some of my ponies from 1995 and compared to them now, they look really funny.  Ugly things.  But I feel the more you practice/draw, you improve.  I think a lot of people could be artists if they just practiced.  My media has stayed the same really.

In what ways has your art improved over time? Where do you still see room for improvement?

I always want my ponies to look as much like the cartoons as possible.  As I said in the question above, my late 1990's ponies were awful   But I feel I have gotten better with time.
I really wish i could improve my hair.  My manes and tails never come out looking like I imagine.  I love the hair in Midnight Castle, Escape from Catrina, and backcards like the So-Soft one.  I love the So-Soft backcard art.  And I wish I could shade.  That makes a difference too when there are highlights in the mane and tail and stuff like that.  I suck at shading.

What is your goal for this year (or 12 months from now)?

I work so much, I definitely don't draw as much as I wanted.  I used to want to be a children's book writer and illustrator, but that dream ended a few years ago.  I wish I had goals for a year from now, but I don't really.  Work, pay bills, and draw when I have time :(

What would you like to say to new, aspiring pony artists or someone who is still looking for encouragement to share their artwork?

Practice practice practice.  You will get better.  And look into digital options.  I wish when I was younger I had looked into classes or something.  I think my art would be on another level if I could draw and color in the computer.  And sharing your work helps make friends.  I still, after all these years, don't feel comfortable or at ease in the pony community because of my gender.  I still feel like I don't fit in.  But when I share my artwork, and pony friends on here comment, I feel like I'm connecting with invisible friends across the globe.

Off Topic / Have you got a life? Show me your Arena stats!
« on: January 27, 2023, 02:22:55 PM »
As of this moment, my online time spent on the Arena is... 137 days, 1 hours and 21 minutes according to my profile stats

I'm sure some of you can do better! How much time have YOU spent on the Arena? :arena: :hearts:

I'm not sure how accurate the forum stats are. Posting time is probably affected by the forum time settings and the record probably isn't always accurate. Judging by posts, the forums I mostly hang out on are Customs (2913 posts) and Arts & Crafts Corral (2816 posts). Makes sense! However, my "Most Popular Boards By Activity" says I'm mostly active in Swap Talk, which I'm not so sure about. I wonder if any of our Admins know how this is measured? I'm curious!

To find your stats, go to your profile > Profile info > Show stats (you can also find it under your avatar image).

Arts & Crafts Corral / Winter/holiday swap with Starscout & more
« on: January 22, 2023, 03:27:48 AM »
Hello hello,

I'm Griffin, I'm an art mod, and very occasionally I actually manage to produce some art instead of just hanging around here. XD I'm slow to draw and even slower to post.

The official Holiday Art Swap was cancelled as starscout and myself were the only ones who signed up. So we decided to do a private swap instead.

Here's my half, featuring starscout's OCs Dusty Rose and Day Showers. :) Pencil sketch, inked on my phone using ArtFlow, coloured + background added in GIMP.

The next one is something I drew already in July 2022 but never got around to post. This was made for a DTIYS (Do/Draw this in your style) challenge in a papercrafts themed Facebook group. The original drawing was provided by Sannin Helmen Paperipuoti, unfortunately I don't have it at hand for you to compare. It featured a brown-haired girl and a unicorn baking together, so the obvious choice for me was to draw them in MLP style. I didn't reference any Hasbro art for this but the pigtails and the outfit were definitely inspired by Molly. Indian ink + watercolour.

Customs / Persona pony for Goanna
« on: July 14, 2022, 01:52:21 PM »
This pony is a waaaaay overdue colouring contest prize for Goanna!

Goanna asked for her persona pony (apparently also named Goanna?) and we decided to go with a G3 base. :)

Goanna by Haawan, on Flickr

Details: Sunny Daze bait, full body repaint in off white. All painting done in acrylics, dry pastel used for some small details (inside the ears etc.); sealed with polyurethane varnish. Rehaired with nylon hair in three colours: Wisteria, Sour Grapes, Water Nixie (from my old stash of Dollyhair nylon). Her head still turns as you can see from the photos so she's somewhat poseable! ^.^

Tomorrow she starts her long journey to Goanna. I hope you all like her!

Arts & Crafts Corral / Advice from vector artists?
« on: June 06, 2022, 07:20:01 AM »
I need to do some simple lineart graphics for work, the quality should be high enough for printing. I'm thinking vectors would be ideal, but I've only worked with raster images before. I've played around with the path tool in GIMP but other than that I'm a complete novice.

Does anyone have recommendations as to the most beginner-friendly programme for this? I could download either Inkscape or CorelDRAW but I'm not sure which one would be better. I've read some comparisons online but am a bit overwhelmed by the information. ^^; I know we have a lot of skilled digital artists here so I thought asking for advice before getting started wouldn't hurt. What's your favourite software for vectors?

For reference, the drawings will be very simple (circles, lines, grids etc.) and I'm sure I can get away with raster if needed. I don't have a whole lot of time to spend on this but of course it would be fun to learn to make some simple vector illustrations for other purposes, too!

:cookie: and thanks in advance for any help!

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Boardgames & card games
« on: May 22, 2022, 02:07:12 AM »
Let's talk about boardgames and cardgames! Which ones do you play? Any recent favourites? Wishlist? Who do you play with? :)

I've been a casual Magic the Gathering player since the early 2000s and have introduced my husband and several friends to it. :D  I've never been an active collector, though, or one who plays by the tournament rules. Vintage MtG is my thing, and every now and then I buy some new cards - perhaps a duel deck, and some boosters here and there.

For a year or two now I've met with two friends for game nights every couple of weeks, Covid permitting. We often play a round of Dead of Winter, a zombie themed boardgame, then move on to some quicker boardgames or cardgames like Guillotine or Exploding Kittens. Quick, affordable card games seem pretty popular these days! I've also played Munchkin (once or twice) and Fluxx (we have the Monty Python deck), to name a few. Carcassonne is fun, too. I was late to the party, I played this game once with a friend ages ago when it was brand new, but only got my own copy a few years ago for Christmas. I should buy some expansions to make it more interesting. :)

I do enjoy some classic boardgames as well, such as Scrabble or Alias. Haven't played either of them in a while!

Arts & Crafts Corral / Your 2021 art summary and onwards to 2022!
« on: December 31, 2021, 12:05:55 AM »
We discuss our collecting goals a lot but how about a look into your artistic activities? :) Let's do a 2021 recap and discuss our goals or intentions for 2022!

I'll add some prompt questions below but feel free to approach this topic in any way you like  ^.^

  • How was your 2021 in terms of arts and/or crafts? Especially compared to 2020 or previous years?
  • Did you try anything new, like new tools or techniques, new styles or subject matters, or completely new artsy or craftsy hobbies? Maybe you participated in a swap for the very first time, or took on your very first commission?
  • Pony art? Non-pony art?
  • What was your favourite medium to work with?
  • What were your areas of improvement?
  • Tell us about your worst art-related mishap or biggest disappointment!
  • Which 2021 piece are you most proud of?
  • Show us your 2021 Summary of Art if you've made one! Templates can be found online (dA and elsewhere)
  • Have you made any art-related New Year resolutions or set any goals for 2022?
  • What would you like to try or experiment with?
  • Are you planning to buy some new art supplies? Show us your wishlist!
  • Are you looking to do any art swaps (private/group swaps, on the Arena or off-site)? What kind of swaps would you like?
  • If you were only able to complete one art piece in 2022, what would it be?

Arts & Crafts Corral / The Avatar Exchange - sign-ups open now!
« on: September 17, 2021, 08:52:00 AM »
Hi everyone! The Avatar Exchange I used to run last year / earlier this year is back!

I've made some changes: After discussing it with the other Mods I've decided to change the rules a little and make it into a proper art swap, even if low-key, and therefore from now on you will find the threads under Swap Talk!
>> Round 5 of the Avatar Exchange

You will now earn feedback for successfully participating in the swap. There are no minimum post or feedback requirements for joining, however, and newbies are very welcome! This is a good way to start building your Arena feedback, especially if you're looking to join our Holiday swaps. ;)
