Pony Corral / DIY Foam Board Pony Risers Tutorial
« on: November 23, 2012, 07:25:40 AM »
Copying this over from the old Arena  ^.^

A few years ago I decided I needed a way to display my ponies so I could actually see them all. I was tired of messing with dozens of boxes as makeshift risers and I couldn't afford nice acrylic risers so I decided to make my own.

Here's how I did it...

Materials
Two sheets of 20"x30"x3/16" foam board
Utility knife
Hot glue gun with several glue sticks
Yard stick, T-square or some other kind of straight edge
Pen
About 1/2 Yard of felt (optional)

First you need to cut out your side and middle pieces. I made a stencil so I can just trace around it instead of measuring it out every time. You could use the back side of a cereal box, store bought pizza box or something similar to make your stencil should you want one. The measurements will depend on the space where you display your ponies but I'll include the measurements I use for my risers in just a bit to give you an idea of the proportions

Here I've traced all 3 of my "step" pieces onto the foam board

Here I've got my ruler to use as a straight edge while I cut to make sure I don't wander off the line. Be careful not to cut yourself!

You should have 3 identical step pieces

This shot shows the measurements I used to fit my shelving system

Take your second sheet of foam board and cut out a strip the same width as your lower step where the ponies will stand. If you have a large T-square now is the perfect time to use it to make sure everything stays as even as possible
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Run a generous bead of hot glue along the top edge of the lower step and place your strip on the edge. Watch out for the hot glue because it will squish out of the edges when you press it into place
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Repeat that step with the other end piece, then the middle and you should have something like this
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Cut another strip and do the same thing with the upper step and your risers should look like this
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Cut a third strip to close the gap between the two steps and glue it into place along the front edges of the 3 step pieces.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

At this point I flip my risers over and apply a bead of hot glue along the seams to ensure a strong build
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Flip them back over and cut the fourth strip to close the last gap on the front of your risers. Now is a good time to look your risers over and glue up any weak spots. At this point you can call it done or you can pretty it up a little bit

I chose to cover mine in green felt to look like grass. You could also try other materials, just make sure it's safe for ponies to stand on. You wouldn't want to make lovely new risers for your ponies and find out later that all your ponies are stained. I find that the felt does a decent job of hiding the hot glue blobs and my ponies have been on these risers for years with no ill effects. In this shot I have my risers on their back and I'm starting to glue the felt into place on the lower edge. I'm keeping the selvedge edge of my felt lined up with the left edge of my risers to keep everything nice and even. Glue the felt into place on the front of the lower step in this pattern I___________I It's not necessary to glue the upper edge.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

To make it easier to handle you can snip away the excess felt on the right side of the first step
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Work the felt over the step and make sure it's relatively even and smooth and glue it into place in the same pattern I_____________I Keep smoothing and gluing until you get to the back edge. Now snip off all the excess felt
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Glue into place along the sides and the back edge
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now you only have the sides left to deal with. If the risers will be in a bookcase there's no need to felt the sides as they won't be seen. For my shelves, I have two risers side by side so I only need to felt one end on this set.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

If you have scrap pieces this is a good place to use it. Just glue along all the edges and snip them off even
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Here's my completed riser
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now for the fun part! Here's my shelf, packed full of ponies but I'm only able to see the ones on the front row. Ho-hum.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Now here's the same shelf with the riser in use! Way better, no?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

My risers were cut to accommodate mostly G1 and G3 ponies so if you're only displaying G4s or babies you could work in an extra level on your risers and have even more room. It all depends on what you're displaying and where you're displaying it. Make a few test "step" patterns on regular paper and hold them up to the spot you intend to put them to make sure of the fit. Also hold ponies up to them to make sure the steps are the right height for the look you want to achieve.

Please post your results in this thread if you make these risers, I'd love to see what you come up with!

Trader & Shipping Support / zero feedback eBay buyers
« on: October 26, 2012, 06:21:02 PM »
I'm selling a fairly high priced item on eBay and I keep having people with new accounts (within the year) and no feedback messaging me about wanting to buy it but at a fraction of the price. Is it a common thing now for scammers to create a bunch of ghost accounts and use them to message sellers?

It's not just this item I've had trouble with either. I never remember this being an issue with eBay selling in the past. Something just seems off about all this. Now I've got one (zero feedback) wanting to make payments. They say they'll pay a holding fee on the 31st and send the rest Nov. 14th. Does eBay even allow that? I'm not sure how to respond to this person. I'd like to sell the item but I also don't want to walk into a scam of some sort. Although, I don't know how it would benefit them to not pay. Any ideas?

On a side note, I'm also getting the non-paying bidder stuff. What's the deal with that? Do people just create accounts and bid on items they don't intend to buy just for the entertainment? I don't understand what they get out of it.

Trader & Shipping Support / Pony lost in the mail- what to do?
« on: August 22, 2012, 05:43:45 PM »
This is something I've never had happen before so I'm hoping some of you could give me some advice. I mailed a pony first class international on the 16th of July going to the UK and found out this morning that it never showed up. I've never had anything get lost in the mail before so I'm not sure what I can do. It didn't have tracking or insurance on it so I don't know where to go from here. I cleaned out my purse a week ago and shredded all the receipts that were old so now I don't even have that. I don't think it would have helped to locate it anyway as it only showed the destination and the date/time I mailed it out. I know some places have trouble with packages getting stuck in customs but I didn't think the UK was one of those. Any ideas as to how I can find her pony? I hate to think of it being lost in the void

The Dollhouse / Price Check on YoMegu/Komame Kyoto Outfits
« on: July 07, 2012, 12:06:17 PM »
I'm interested in selling my Kyoto outfits that came with my Yo-Megu and was wondering what good asking prices would be. I took them out and looked at them but that's all. I'll be selling the kimono, shoes and casual kimono wear set. Thanks so much!

Trader & Shipping Support / Anyone bought from lipin2012 on eBay?
« on: July 02, 2012, 06:59:14 PM »
I bought a Celestia from them yesterday and now I have 7 deposits all for $0.00, all in the same day. They all have different descriptions but are very obviously from the same source. I've had my account hijacked before by an overseas thief so I'm freaking out a little right now. They're in Hong Kong and the account is fairly new, looks like they started selling in February. Many of their feedbacks are from the same person and are marked "private". It was an impulse buy and I didn't check this stuff out first. If I had there's no way I would have bid.

TLDR: Have any of you bought from this person before and have you noticed any strange activity on your bank account shortly thereafter?

Anyone else get a golden ticket from Volks USA today?

Oh man, I can't stop grinning

MLP Nirvana / Prices for Applejack varients?
« on: February 29, 2012, 10:58:28 PM »
I'm a complete noob when it comes to Nirvanas so please forgive me  ^^;

I've decided I'd like to collect all the AJ variants. I know about the US and UK ones but the rest are a mystery to me. I found this page on My Little Wiki and was wondering if it's complete? Also, would anyone be willing to make a list of the prices I can expect to pay for them loose?

Off Topic / Serger owners please help, lol
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:36:55 PM »
The tension discs on my serger have rusted and I think that's what's causing my stitches to come out looking like trash. Someone suggested running waxed dental floss in them to try to clean them but that didn't do any good. I used a small paint brush to wipe a little machine oil on them hoping it'd help the thread to slide past the rust burrs but no luck there either. I thought about sliding a piece of fine grit sandpaper in there but I don't know how much good it would do. I'm probably going to have to have it serviced but I thought I'd see if anyone else had other suggestions first.

Pony Corral / Sales Post Format
« on: January 19, 2012, 11:01:22 PM »
I need to refresh my sales post with a new layout but I wanted to ask around and find out what people prefer. I currently have it set up so that my pictures are all in my actual post but I was considering making use of an off-site photo album. Personally, when I run across a sales post with just a link to an album I feel like I'm less inclined to buy from them because it feels like a hassle to click through however many pages of stuff I'm not interested in just to find the one pony I want. On the other hand, if you have a lot to sell with tons of pictures it might deter people from even letting the sales post load depending on their connection speed. I'm thinking about going back to individual pony pictures instead of group shots and even though I've sold the bulk of them that's still a lot of pictures.

Another option would be to keep the group pictures for quicker loading times and have individual pictures in an off-site album if people are interested. The descriptions and prices would remain in my post so buyers would have all the information at hand. I would probably also include prices on the album for any non-Arena people who might happen along. I've also seen some sales pages with lists of the pony names only and they're linked to off-site albums. They go directly to the pony so no digging is required.

TLDR
  • Group shots on Arena page with links to individual shots in an off-site album, descriptions/prices on Arena page
  • All individual shots in Arena post with descriptions/prices
  • List of pony names that are linked to individual shots in an off-site album, descriptions/prices listed in off-site album
Please feel free to weigh in, I'd like to know what you guys think  ^.^

Welcome to Sailor Earth's Pony Sales!

I try to be as thorough as possible in my descriptions, but if something you want to know isn't listed just PM me and I can usually get back with you within 24 hours ^_^

Shipping
- Please include your zip code or country in your pm if you'd like a shipping quote. I ship my items in bubble mailers (or boxes when necessary) with the items individually wrapped in tissue paper. I usually ship the next business day after receiving payment but it's not always possible. I will PM you to let you know when it will ship.

Payment- Paypal is my preferred method of payment. Please include your Arena name and/or the names of your items with your payment.

All items come from a non-smoking, pet friendly home (I have cats) =^. .^=

MOC Pony-Naut- The backcard is in very good shape. There's a slight bend to the lower left corner and some wear just above the helmet where it reads "A pretty pony costume", probably from the helmet of another ponywear set when they were packaged. The bubble over the helmet has some scuffing and there are some little speckles of debris trapped just below the spacesuit. $35

Blind Bag Pony Shelves- Dimensions are 23 3/4" wide by 14" tall by 1 1/2" deep and the shelves have a spacing of about 2 1/4". Most things around 2" or less in height should fit. They have two sawtooth hangers on the back for hanging on a wall. They are painted a matte white and are ready for display as-is but the matte white also makes a good primer should you choose to paint them. I have two shelves available. $30 each or both for $50.

On the sweet side I like Caramello, Dove milk chocolate and chocolate covered raisins/peanuts. I also like assorted nuts, hot peanuts or other salty treats. Candy from other countries are always fun to try.

Pets- I have 6 cats and 2 dogs.

Other Stuff- Anything from Tasty Peach Studios, chunky fake pearl necklaces and bracelets, The Nightmare Before Christmas stuff, Disney snow globes (not like Mickey but princesses, TNBC, Alice in Wonderland and such), fantasy/Disney figurines, Burt's Bees or similar products that don't do animal testing, Chococat, Hello Kitty, Nintendo trinkets (esp. Mario characters), fantasy maps, candles (pumpkin spice, apple pie, other fall scents, vanilla), anything Alice in Wonderland, The Princess Bride, Sailor Moon, Batman, original Pokemon, Mario Bros., Lilo & Stitch and most any other animated Disney stuff. I'm big into recycling so I always appreciate wrapping papers and such that are recyclable.

Favorite Colors- I like all colors but if I had to choose I'd say cool colors like blues, greens, purples and silver.

Favorite Pony Generation- G1

Favorite Pony- Applejack and celestial-themed G1s

Dislikes- Lotion, perfume sprays (I just never seem to use them)
