The Dollhouse / My Yeloli dolls, let me show them to you

I've been collecting Yeloli dolls lately and I love them!  They're made in China and mostly sold domestically there, so I've been getting them from Taobao.

Pony Corral / Zipp Storm's blasting off agaaaaain!

So I bought a Transformer that came with "fire blast effects" . . .

The pegs on the blast effects are actually a tiny bit too big to fit in the G5's hooves, but the teal ones were squishy enough that I could jam them in there regardless, lol!

I've been trying to remember the name / author of this one pony fanfic.  It must have been written in the G3 era because I remember G3 Rarity being in it, but the protagonist was one of the G2 unicorn ponies.

The fic had G1s, G2, and G3s and they all lived in the same world.  I think their countries were split up by breed, with all the earth ponies living together regardless of whether they were G2s, G1s, etc.

The G2 unicorn toys have removable wing clips, so in the story they're a unique breed, winged unicorns.  The winged unicorns were almost extinct and because of that monogamy wasn't an option, they were just desperately trying to have babies to keep their breed alive.  But I think, like panda bears, they just weren't very fertile.

I want to say there was a lot of political drama?  The unicorns were generally regarded as rude by the other ponies (with the exception of G3 Rarity.)

Also there was an antagonist who was an evil pony of darkness.  The protagonist was a female winged unicorn . . . I don't remember if she was an OC or based on a toy.  At one point I think the bad guy brainwashes her with magic or something and she basically joins him in his quest to rule the world, or whatever.

I also remember him kidnapping Glory, trying to make her give him an heir (via magic), but her body couldn't handle the magical power and she died.

It's not Royal Destiny (also a G2 fic) because I already checked that one . . . I hope someone else remembers this fic!  Maybe the author is still here, even?  Pretty sure I read this fic on a personal website, not Fanfiction.net (but it might also have been on FF.net.)

Pony Corral / okay but what Pokemon would they have
« on: February 15, 2022, 12:41:24 PM »
I'm sure I'm not the only one here who likes both MLP and Pokemon, so . . . if the ponies were Pokemon trainers, what Pokemon (either type or specific species) would they have?  And is it ethical for a MLP to have Ponyta or Mudsdale on their team? :P

I'm gonna start with an easy one:  Firefly.  I picture her with a team of Electric and Flying type Pokemon.  Regardless of their typing, all her Pokemon MUST be able to fly.

Her team:

Raichu (Alolan; Electric / Psychic); She traveled to the home of the Tropical ponies to catch one, because she wanted a Raichu who could surf through the air alongside her.

Talonflame (Flying / Fire)

https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/thumb/d/d8/Sophocles_Vikavolt.png/250px-Sophocles_Vikavolt.png

Vikavolt  (Bug / Electric) - Firefly once saved a Grubbin that was drowning in mud; she was surprised when it later returned as a Vikavolt, wanting to join her team!

Emolga (Electric; Flying)

Braviary (Normal / Flying)

Firefly doesn't actually battle with her Pokemon much, she is more interested in getting ideas for new flying tricks from them or having races with them.

Pony Corral / Made a pony a home, just in time for Valentine's Day
« on: February 14, 2022, 08:42:55 AM »
Okay, I have had this project sitting around half-finished for YEARS but I was determined to finish it by Valentine's Day this year.

So one day I was at Goodwill and I found these wooden boxes that had been used to hold specialty rum. The top slides on / off and they have protective plastic on the front.  Perfect for collectibles.

First I took off the rope handle and painted them white with acrylic paint.

Then I cut paper to fit the walls / floor of the box and used the paper patterns to cut out thin cardboard from a cereal box.

I glued fabric--from cloth napkins also from Goodwill--over the cardboard.

I hot glued them in and for a final touch, hot glued a new ribbon handle.  (Just for show, I would never dare lift it by the handle, lol.)

Finally a home for prototype SS Heart Throb!

Pony Corral / Pipp Petals Room Reveal pics
« on: February 11, 2022, 06:19:50 PM »
I saw this on Amazon and jumped to order it! They sent it in a bubble mailer of all things, but fortunately the outer box is very sturdy.

This playset is amazing.  Instead of a flat backdrop that's just a picture, it has a 3D cardboard backdrop with multi-tiered shelves. It adds so much!  I use my bookshelves to prop it up, but if I were a parent getting it for a kid, I would glue the backdrop to a three sided box to keep it upright, if that makes sense.  Like a grade school diorama.

The pony it comes with is Pipp (the others are just visiting, ha ha) and it has tons of accessories, mostly new molds.

The accessories are REALLY nicely molded.  The back of the gaming console even has tiny vents on it.  And the "directional stick" on the gaming controllers are little tabs that allow the ponies to hold the controllers.

Also comes with a tiny toy of Pipp, like within the G5 universe it's a toy.  (Sunny and Izzy are looking at it in the first photo.)

Pony Corral / Vintage MLPs - actually, no lead or arsenic
« on: January 30, 2022, 01:48:45 PM »
Hey all, around 2015 there was a study on vintage toys that showed that some contain traces of lead and arsenic.  (Not enough to make a kid drop dead obviously but, y'know, any level of lead is bad.)

MLPs were mentioned in the abstract of the study, because they were tested, alongside 70s/80s Barbies, Little People and other toys. BUT it didn't specify what level of lead etc was found in each toy.  So I emailed the researcher and asked.  And she kindly and very quickly replied back!

"The one MLP tested for this study (I don't remember why just one, as I have several from the 80s) didn't show lead, arsenic or cadmium. But I know from later testing with a different technique that old MLPs and Barbies typically contain high levels of phthalates, chemicals used to make vinyl plastic flexible that are now banned in children's products as they migrate easily onto skin and act as hormone disruptors. I didn't give my kids my old Barbies and MLPs, sadly."

So, although the phthalates are something to consider if you want to pass on your ponies to your kids, at least vintage ponies DO NOT contain lead, arsenic, or cadium.  :)

(Sidenote, I think it's the phthalates that cause that G1 pony smell, which explains why G3s don't smell like that, and also why they and Basic Fun ponies are less squishy than G1s.)

She also sent me a chart of the results of the toys tested . . . Will post that here after I get the image hosted.  For MLP, they tested one pony, a pink saddle, and a pink shoe.

I was googling around to find pics of the 1992 Baby Stockings Kellogg's mail-away offer, and I happened across ANOTHER Kellogg's giveaway!  This one actually predates the Baby Stockings offer, having happened in 1990, seemingly only in Spain.  And in fact the mail order ponies were all made-in-Spain variants.

Not only that, but there's a partial clip of the television commercial of it on Youtube! Baby Lemon Drop, Dancing Butterflies, and Galaxy are featured.

I also found this post talking about the G.I. Joe side of it.  The G.I. Joes were seemingly regular made-in-China Joes.  Unlike the Baby Stockings promotion, where the only G.I. Joe offered was Lifeline, this promotion let kids choose between six different Joes.

But back to the ponies, and the video-uploader's memories of the promotion!

KELLOGG'S PROMO 1990 MY LITTLE PONY AND G.I. JOE

The other day tinkering with my Beta movies I found this treasure that I recorded as a child, it lasts very little because it is only the final fragment of the ad (the part that interested me) where Kellogg's promoted the gift of a pony or a G.I. Joe to choose from. From the back of the box, you chose the toy and they sent you one (although the toy you chose never coincided with the one in the photo since they sent you whatever belonged to that same set). I was able to get 3 ponies. I chose Galaxy and they sent me Fizzy, then Forget-Me-Not and they sent me Peach Blossom, finally I chose Baby Tiddly Winks and they sent me Baby Lemon Drop. A detail of the promo of My Little Pony is that all of them were made in Spain. Nowadays they are a treasure and some of them are worth fortunes.

Spanish ponies were given from the following sets: Party ponies (translator’s note: Twice As Fancy), Adventurers (translator’s note: Big Brother ponies), Cuddly Baby ponies (translator’s note: set comprised of Baby Moondancer, Baby Tiddly Winks, Baby Lemon Drop, and Baby Bow Tie), Flutter ponies, and Twinkle Eye ponies. I have no idea about G.I. Joe or how it worked since I only dedicated myself to the ponies :)

Pony Corral / What are your six favorite post-movie G1 sets?
« on: December 08, 2021, 10:51:51 PM »
There are a lot of popular sets in the first couple years of My Little Pony.  The adult sea ponies. The Rainbow ponies.  The original Baby ponies.  The ENORMOUS first set of So-Softs.  But let's look at the sets AFTER the landmark "movie year" (with the first set of So-Softs, first Flutter ponies, etc).

Here are my top six:

1.  Twice As Fancy ponies, Set 1 (Dancing Butterflies etc.), I absolutely love them!
2. Twinkle Eye ponies, Set 2 (Quackers etc) - I'm a sucker for Twinkle Eyes!
3. Baby Rainbow ponies - a simple set, but so cute!
4. Princess Ponies, Set 1 (Princess Royal Blue, etc) - They're sooo beautiful with their tinsel and medallion symbols!
5. First Tooth Baby ponies - I had two of these as a kid and loved them!  And they were some of the last babies based on existing adult ponies.
6. Merry Go Round ponies - Not a bad pony in the bunch, all great colors / designs

Honorable mention:  Sweetberry ponies - They almost got the sixth spot!

Pony Corral / Places to buy the Basic Fun Twinkle Eyes (including online)
« on: December 06, 2021, 04:42:43 PM »
I hope it's okay to give this its own post . . . I figured it's easier to keep track of as its own thing instead of being in the middle of a very long thread. :)

These are the places that are stocking the Basic Fun Twinkle ponies . . . if you know of more let me know and I'll add them to the list!  :frolic:

OFFLINE PLACES TO BUY

* Meijer

* The Cracker Barrel

* Ace Hardware

* Blain's Farm and Fleet

* Ben Franklin Craft Stores

* Boscov's (Pennsylvania)

* Ellington Agway (Connecticut)

* Park Street Books - Medfield, Massachusetts

* Automobuild (Los Gatos, California)

* Geppetto's (California)

* Toy R Us (Canada)

* maybe The Paper Source? (unconfirmed)

PLACES TO BUY ONLINE

- UNITED STATES -

* Walmart.com

* Old Towne Orange - Old Towne Orange, California

* Kindness and Joy Toys - Fayetteville, Arkansas

* Rainbow Resource Center - The Gusty set is pictured but the listing says Twinkle Eye ponies

* Little Red Hen

* Rockin' AB

* Curious Bear Toy & Book Shop

* Pow Science Toys

* RedFive Toys (Massachusetts)

* The Toy Store Onine - They confidently describe Sweet Stuff as "the green pony" so, uh, maybe double-check with them before ordering . . . ?

* Love of Character

* Shenanigans Toys

* The Toy Shoppe Northport

* All Time Toys

* Cat 'n Mouse Toys and Games

* Tahoe Toys & Treasures - Also has the Posey set

* Tomfoolery Toys - I ordered from them and they really are the Twinkle Eye ponies even though the page says Rainbow ponies. ;)  But contact them in advance (phone or email) or they'll send you a random TE pony; not listed individually.

- UNITED KINGDOM -
* Abgee - I think these might be a distributor rather than a store?

* Five Little Diamonds (UK) - Listed but not in stock yet; you can reserve a set, though. How it works is you contact them, get on the list, and put a 20% non-refundable deposit down; when they get the ponies in stock, you pay the remaining 80% and get the ponies.

* Toy Street (UK) - Not in stock yet, but listed!  They are listed as "Rainbow ponies - Wave 4" but they mention each pony by name, Fizzy etc, so they're definitely the Twinkle Eye ponies. :)

* Wigwam Toys (UK) - Not listed yet but they've carried all the other sets, so they're a good bet

- CANADA -

* Toy Masters - Manitoba, Canada

* Playful Mind Toys - Toronto, Ontario, Canada

* Retro Festive - Oakville, Ontario, Canada

- AUSTRALIA -

* Australian Toy Distributors - I am not sure if individuals can order from them . . . I imagine they usually sell to toy stores.  If anyone successfully buys from them, let me know.

* Alfy's Toys - Syndey, Australia

If they don't show on the websites, they're probably out of stock at the moment.  But I did see them all listed with my own eyes. ;)

Also--check any local small independent toy stores!  A lot of them don't have online shopping but might have the Twinkle Eyes in person!

You could even go in and make them aware of the Basic Fun ponies and ask if they'll order them . . . I've found small stores will sometimes accommodate customers like that, if they show interest in a product.

Not clickbait! :P

So I wrote to Basic Fun and said, essentially:  "I love your retro ponies! :inlove:  The Twinkle Eye ponies look great!  Are you planning on making more?  I hope you do!"

So after a while (quite a while because the US post office sucks now) . . . I got a letter back!

Wow!!  So here's the gist of it:

We received your letter about the My Little Pony retro line and appreciate you taking the time to let us know how much you love collecting and playing with them! We will try to continue to produce and release more replicas of the originals (there are over 500 of them!!!) every season. A toy season runs "Spring" and "Fall" so every January and every August if you google "My Little Pony Retro Basic Fun" you may see the new items that we have launched that season.

Please feel free to check out www.basicfun.com to see our latest and greatest toys in case you see others you want. After the Twinkle Eyed Ponies, we plan on showing retailers the following to see if they want to sell them for us:

WOW!!  So (if the retailers will pick them up) they will be releasing the Flower Fantasy ponies from Year 10 / 1992!  No one saw this coming!!

I don't know if they specifically wanted a set of three ponies or if they really like lace or what, but that set is hard to find . . . In all my years of collecting (since the late 90s) I only ever found one in the wild!

For those unfamiliar with them, here are pics of them from My Little Wiki:

The one with purple hair (Love Petal?) is a long time want of mine so I'm pretty excited!   It also sounds like they want to sell them individually AND as a three-pack, which might make it easier to get all three.

The other good news is it sounds like they are game to keep producing retro ponies as long as they can find retailers to carry them, which is a relief.  I was sort of worried that they would stop after Target bailed.  (Of course I'd like to see the retros distributed more widely, but I will take limited distribution over cancellation any day . . . I hope the TEs sell so well that Target and other retailers want them again.)

Now the other question is . . . If the Flower Fantasies are planned for Fall 2022, what is planned for Spring 2022?  Nothing?  Still the Twinkle Eyes, since their distribution was slowed down by the port issues?  Some other set?  Hopefully we'll get answers at the New York Toy Fair or before!

Pony Fairs! / Washington State Toy Show - Nov. 13th!
« on: October 25, 2021, 12:15:22 PM »
Hey folks, Washington State Toy Show is going to be held November 13th, 2021!

I will be vending there, and in previous years I've also seen vintage ponies show up in random booths, and have seen a few other booths that also specialize in MLPs.  So far 118 vendors have signed up.

It will be held at the former Toys R Us in South Hill Mall in Puyallup, WA.

If you're interested in vending, it sounds like they have a few slots left but they're going fast.  Vendor application can be found here.  A 10' x 10' booth is $55.  This year vendors are required to bring their own tables/chair.

So in summary:

WHAT: Washington State Toy Show

WHEN: November 13, 2021, 10am to 5pm.  (Or buy early bird tickets to get in at 9am.)

WHERE: The old Toys R Us in Puyallup
3551 9th St SW
Puyallup, WA 98373

HOW MUCH: Tickets are $10 for Early Birds, $8 for regular access.  Kids under 12 are free.  You buy tickets right at the door.

Pony Corral / Wan Accessory . . . accessories
« on: September 16, 2021, 07:31:41 PM »
I got these on Taobao from Wanaccessory, back when they were still offered.  They're leather or faux leather decorations to be snapped onto Wanaccessory purses and backpacks.  But I think you could buy snaps from a craft store and add them to any brand of bag pretty easily!

So the Festival of Licensing started today I believe (yes it's really called that lol) but I am having a hard time figuring out where to find the pony info.   If anyone finds a good source, please post the link or info here! <3
