Pony Corral / Meetups during COVID
« on: October 17, 2020, 06:42:59 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any zoom meetups for the older gen communities? I have wanderlust and am itching to get out, but it’s not safe, and I don’t think I want to hang around a bunch of men I’ve never met, from the g4 community, anyway.

Pony Corral / Let’s discuss: the Pillars of Harmony
« on: October 13, 2020, 07:39:16 PM »
The Pillars were 6 ponies who were emphasized in the later seasonal lore of FiM, although one of them- Starswirl the Bearded- was a mentioned figure since season 1. The Six were: Rockhoof, Mistmane, Mage Meadowbrook, Starswirl the Bearded, Somnambula, and Flash Magnus.

I feel like the incorporation of The g1 pillars- aptly named- were meant to pay homage to the g1 community, especially with the nod to Somnambula and Starswirl’s friendship with Tirek’s brother, Grogar. In the season 10 comics most recently, it is even revealed that Zecora the zebra was inspired to start making magical potions as a result of Mage Meadowbrook’s influence. I also feel like the Pillars being a homage to this wonderful community of collectors, was completely overlooked and dismissed by the newer generation, which oddly is completely backward from the animated series and its portrayal of the Pillars. (Maybe that’s just how I interpret it, though)

It also bums me out that these ponies never got a toy made of any of them. Not a single one. Not even Starswirl, for all the buildup that he was given.

Anyone want to talk about these ponies?

Pony Brag Arena / Little Giggles!
« on: October 12, 2020, 10:44:35 AM »
I don’t usually go thrifting on Mondays due to the toy displays being pretty bare bones, but I decided to go today (else I’d be climbing the walls at home), and lo and behold, not only do I find a whole mess of g3 ponies, but also a lone g1 baby, Little Giggles. Her hair is still in fairly nice condition, surprisingly. She just needs a little scrub.

She and I share a well deserved Coke and enjoy a bit of sun and fresh air before I take her home and start her spa treatment.

Customs / FiM 10th anniversary baby!
« on: October 10, 2020, 10:05:38 PM »
Does this count as a Friendship is Magic 10th anniversary baby? She was born (made) today, so I guess.....but she’s an imagined G1 Japanese Takara Pinky, using a g4 Pinkie Pie, sooooo....maaaaybbbe? You guys let me know!

Anyway! Here she is in a very cute purple ensemble inspired by Lolita fashion (because why else?), because Pinky’s original outfit is purple with a white Peter Pan collar, triangle motif, and bright yellow tie. I also tried incorporating some of her other complimentary colors from her g1 toy. Here, she wears a lavender blouse with a lace collar and a white jumper skirt over it, with a unicorn motif! Also, lavender lace socks and wrist cuffs, white shoes, and a pink bracelet!

Also, she’s in front of a Rainbow cake (my calendar pic for October, oddly enough) because 10 YEARS OF FIM!!! And the pony brand’s logo is big on rainbows. Fitting.

She also gets a chance to pose with her best friend, imagined g1 Takara Milky!

Pony Corral / Has Friendship is Magic impacted you in any way?
« on: October 10, 2020, 09:25:50 AM »
I know a lot of the past gen community doesn’t focus on the tv show of MLP, and that’s fine. This is a discussion to talk about the tv show about Friendship is Magic, but all that it encompasses- the toyline, the comics, the books, the fandom, their content. I want to know from you guys if the existence of FiM has impacted you in any way- small or large.

Personally, I wouldn’t have come into My Little Pony as a whole without FiM. I got into FiM through seeing clips and memes flooding YouTube shortly after the great migration from some other site, where artists and such were expanding to different social media platforms. It seemed to be everywhere at the time, and I got curious enough about it to start watching the show to see what it was all about. Time skip forward a few years and I had very quickly developed an attachment to the creative side of the fandom. The music, the animations, the fanfics. I was a creative type long before the discovery of MLP, as I had dived deep into anime and manga and my own comics, and made fanfics and my own oc’s and my own AU’s and original universes as far back as middle school. So the FIM creative community was a perfect fit for me. Somewhere along the line, I started looking into other past generations of pony to see what they offered, and continued falling in love. I explored them all, and while I held admiration for gens 1- 3, I felt I really fell into a death trap with a super niche and obscure part of the toyline of g1 branch called Takara ponies. They were unique. They were from Japan! Their roundness made them even cuter! Their gimmick of fashion also pushed me toward finding a creative side into another fandom (but that’s a story for another day).  I also found myself starting with collecting g4 toys early on as I was getting into the show and the fandom- Starting with Rarity because she spoke to my long dead dream of wanting to be a fashion designer, and Pinkie Pie because she was just plain cute. Them my collection exploded from there and I was buying anything Pony I could get my hands on. Once I started discovering past gens, the collection then spilled into g3, with my first purchase being Toola Roola, then to finding them in the wild, followed by g1 and 2. I have tried to quit collecting for many years, but it has become an insatiable addiction that for some reason, I just can’t quit.

Long story long, I became a fan of everything My Little Pony through the existence of g4. Tell me how g4 has impacted you guys- positively or negatively.

Customs / Whole buncha craft ponies!
« on: October 08, 2020, 09:47:40 PM »
Bored out my skull staying home. So I craft the day away!

First up is one I’m sure no one here is surprised to see from me.... another Takara pony! This time, it’s Pinky!

Up next is a take on the Japanese fashion style of Ouji (a male counterpart to Lolita fashion), with my newest OC, Silent Moon! What a fluffy boi! I adore his little cravats and wrist cuffs!

And lastly, my newest craft, a g4 imagined version of the g1 Takara Pony, Milky! Luckily, G4 Fluttershy is spot on to her in color pallete, so I only wound up changing her eyes to better reflect the look of a Takara pony, except she has purple eyes. Her star motif on her headpiece mirrors that of the Star motif in Milky’s dress.

Off Topic / Pokémon Meowth and Disrespect
« on: October 08, 2020, 08:08:17 AM »
Let’s talk about how it is the ultimate disrespect to give Team Rockets Meowth, from Pokémon, a tragic backstory about how he learned to walk on two feet for this girl cat, only to get rejected by her, and then shortly after we see other region’s cat Pokémon (Purloin, Galarian and Alolan Meowth) standing on two feet instead of four. Stop it, Game Freak. Stop disrespecting Meowth!
What are you guys’ thoughts on this?

Off Topic / I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream
« on: October 07, 2020, 05:58:42 PM »
Let’s discuss ice cream! Who doesn’t love the stuff? Are you the type who likes to dip your spoon into more “childish” flavors, like Unicorn Swirl, Cotton Candy, Or Mermaid Sprinkle, or are you a more mature flavor type of person, and stick with simple vanilla bean or indulgent triple chocolates? Do you prefer any flavor, and think a “mature” and “immature” flavor of ice cream is all just a lie and every ice cream can be eaten by anyone? What are your favorite flavors?

I think these adorable little ponies are definitely worth discussing! Fawn Doo & Marcie Pan- two ponies who appear in the G4 IDW Comic: “Friends forever” issue 12. Their names are an obvious pun on “fondue “ and “marzipan”, which I think is pretty cute (partially because I have been naming a lot of my own OC’s after food and drinks, thanks to a certain comic unrelated to ponies).

According to their wiki page, they were created for Friends Forever Issue 12 by writer Barbara Randall Kesel, with the script description "The two sisters running the cart are plush avatars of pony happiness: they resemble the treats" "in their shiny colorful way. They have their manes done up in rounded buns with shiny hairnets." "Their hooves are bedazzled to match their ‘noms. They appear friendly, prosperous, and well-fed."

They were designed by artist Brenda Hickey, who took design inspiration from Japanese Sweet Lolita fashion, was asked "Are they from the Lollipop-Guild ?" and replied "That is likely what their origin story is!", and later stated that "they're not a reference." They were color-designed by colorist Heather Breckel

I would love to know the backstory of these cute girls, what their relationship to each other is, how they came across the Lolita fashion, and if their personalities are truly how they are depicted in the comics or if that is simply how Pinkie Pie perceives them.

What do you guys think about these ponies?

Pony Corral / Would it sell? Pony concepts meet reality.
« on: October 03, 2020, 10:19:15 AM »
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away....I recall little seasonal ponies being released. One pony’s name was Abra-ca-Dabra, and the other little pony’s name was Pumpkin Tart. They lived happily ever after and never were heard again after g3. And I wonder- would seasonal ponies still be accepted? Perhaps not re-releases, but NEW ponies. It is the time of year where pumpkin spice is put in EVERYTHING. And...why hasn’t Hasbro jumped on the bandwagon to make a Fall inspired pony and named her Pumpkin Spice? I’m sure she would sell like hotcakes. But that’s just my idle wonderings.

Are there any pony concepts you guys wonder why Hasbro hasn’t done yet?

Pony Corral / Hasbro and MLP TLC
« on: October 02, 2020, 01:54:28 PM »
Does anyone think that Hasbro cares enough about the pony brand? I know that MLP is Hasbro’s most successful girl line, but when I see the Pokémon Company doing all these amazing things for the highest grossing brand in the word, I can’t help but compare, even though they are on massively different scales. TPC looks like they put so much care and love and anticipation to what should be big and celebrated and hyped, like their brand’s anniversaries (the 25th is coming soon). This Pokémon music video just came out that hits on delivering nostalgia to all the gens, and it LOOKS GOOD, and it’s just -chef’s kiss-. And I WANT that kind of awesomeness and care and updates and such given to the ponies- all their generations. And when I look at Hasbro and their past anniversary actions- there’s rereleases of the same g1 original 6. Ok. Yaaaay? Again, I know there’s bigger things at stake with TPC and their brand, but I just feel like Hasbro could definitely step up their game- not just with anniversary releases, either. How do you guys feel?  Is Hasbro giving the pony brand as much love and care and building anticipation for new and nostalgia with its brand, as it should be? (Or am I just jealous and imagining things? XD)

Pony Corral / G4 fan artist involved in 2021 pony movie
« on: September 26, 2020, 05:58:28 AM »
Sooo, this is interesting to me, and maybe it will be to others here. It mildly surprised me, but I feel like this was to be expected....

Some interesting news about the upcoming My Little Pony movie surfaced today.

Imalou, known in the fandom for her many gorgeous pieces of G4 related fanart over the past 9 years, has revealed that she has done freelance work on the upcoming movie. In the past 3 years Imalou worked both at and with Boulder Media, an Irish animation studio acquired by Hasbro a few years ago, as part of the effort to bring a new cast of ponies to the big screen next year.

While Imalou's work on the movie was completed this week, we still have to wait a little while before we can see the results. As of now the movie is scheduled to release on September 24, 2021. So just a little under a year to go!

Given the history and nature of g4 and into fandom, was such a thing to be expected involving the next generation? How might you see this shaping gen 5, with a respected g4 fan artist being held up as prominent and being involved in some significant way in the next gen? Is it worrying? Is it a good thing? Share your thoughts!

Off Topic / Goals for 2021?
« on: September 25, 2020, 06:33:53 PM »
Probably a bit early to talk about them, but who cares? One of my goals for 2020 was getting to take a trip to a store to finally get something Lolita and finally into the fashion, but the pandemic happened and screwed air travel, so I blew my money on a pony custom that I didn’t really need. So, I kinda hope to renew that plan for 2021. Another goal I want to have is to save and buy something, anything authentic from the g1 Takara pony line.
I’m also hoping that I can be calmer and less triggered toward people. I failed that this year, so here’s to next year.

What goals do you guys have?

First off, I apologize and do not mean to offend anyone with this topic. I know that the term “Lolita” is highly controversial in nature and linked with a very unfortunate book with the name, but the topic of Lolita fashion is in no way associated with that definition or piece of literature. With that being said. I have often wondered if Hasbro missed a prime opportunity to bring together the “Fashion Style” pony line and imagined a line that payed homage to (or perhaps collabed with) Japanese Lolita Fashion (which is heavily inspired by European Rococo and Victorian fashion) which is probably the most frilliest  cutest fashion ever and something I would see the little girls going nuts for. I mean, in this age of reboots and vintage toys being all the rage again, I feel like they could’ve EASILY brought back the Japanese Takara ponies and made them larger Fashion Style ponies for this. I mean- looking at the history of Lolita fashion, it was born as a direct descendant of a little something called Doll Fashion - a craze that developed in the early 1980s. Same as MLP.

Also, it was first  popularised by pioneering fashion brand Pink House, the dollhouse style was developed by Milk, a label that often appeared on album covers. And what ponies whose very line was “Osharena (stylish)”? Milky and Pinky! Coincidence? I think not!

Buuuut, on the flip side, again- the term of Lolita is controversial to many even when presented to someone who knows nothing about the fashion that just bears the unfortunate name and being disassociated with the terminology,  and from speaking to those in the community, there are some who don’t feel like tying toys into the fashion would be appropriate, since there are the occasional random pedos that try to disrupt things, when Tebet just want to feel like empowered Princesses. It’s a delicate situation on both sides of the table. But how do you guys feel about this? Did Hasbro miss the opportunity train to represent this fashion through their ponies? Would they be able to do it properly and not offend anyone? Or would they avoid it to prevent from taking a hit and backlash to their brand? Are there enough pony princesses to play pretend and have them be Lolita representatives without reaching toward the Japanese fashion style? What could a fashion line for MLP actually look like?
