Following on from my obsession with foreign pony names (subject of a previous thread), I have now become interested in the complex world of My Little Pony releases in Europe. Help....

Anyway, as two of my favourite countries to research in terms of language, history, culture etc are Romania and Greece, I soon started focussing on them. And then I got interested in Eastern Europe in general, especially since I can't find out much about ponies in that part of the world.
So here is what I know so far:

ROMANIA - Romania did not have G1 ponies. At all. It is the only country listed on My Little Wiki that definitely had no G1 ponies. Poor Romania. I know they have G4, but does anyone know if they had G2 or G3?

GREECE - I know a LOT about Greek ponies, from the El Greco ponies to the Hasbro European releases. I don't think I have any questions about Greece at the moment.

CROATIA, SLOVENIA, MACEDONIA, BOSNIA, SERBIA, MONTENEGRO - Back in the G1 days, these were all part of Yugoslavia. I can't imagine that ponies were a thing in Yugoslavia, but I hope to be proved wrong :). I know these countries had G3, as I have a Princess Parade sticker album in Croatian, and have seen these albums for sale on eBay from Serbia and Macedonia. Obviously G4 is there now. What about G2?

BULGARIA - I don't know anything about ponies in Bulgaria. Again, I think their political situation in the '80s probably means that vinyl ponies weren't exactly a priority.

RUSSIA - I am pretty sure I have seen the G1 cartoon translated into Russian! I even found some G1 names translated into Russian; they were in an article comparing G1 and G4. I would love to know more about G1 in Russia.

I'm also intrigued by HUNGARY. I know Hungary is really Central Europe not Eastern Europe :). I know they had G1 ponies as I bought a bundle from there once, and it included 'European' ponies such as Music-Time and Collector's Pose Applejack. I know that the 1986 movie was released in Hungary too. I'd love to know more about the pattern of releases in Hungary. It seems to be a bit of an ignored country in terms of pony history.

So if you know anything about ponies (pre-G4, since G4 is pretty much global) in these locations, I'd like to know it too :). Maybe there's even people from these countries here, who remember childhood ponies! Do you know of websites about ponies from these countries?

I have vague ideas of one day creating a website about ponies in Europe, with especial focus on G1. After all, there's plenty of info about countries such as France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and various parts of Scandinavia, which could be collected and collated. I'm not sure I would ever have the energy to do it all (I have some health problems which means my interests can be a bit stop/start sometimes, as every so often I just have to let everything go hang and rest up for a while), but I am collecting information just in case. If you have obscure info about European ponies, I'm the person who wants to know it :).

MLP Nirvana / Where were NC Ponies sold?
« on: October 03, 2018, 01:57:18 AM »
So, I think the general consensus is that No Country ponies were made in Spain.
I know they were sold in the UK, as my girlfriend has some that were in her childhood collection.
But where else were they sold? I recently bought a No Country Applejack (in Collector's Pose) for my Applejack army (yay!) and she's coming from Switzerland. Were NC ponies sold there, or has she travelled? I like to try and guess at my ponies' history :).

I need to exclaim at people who understand the excitement of a pony find :)

The Full Story:
Spoiler

This morning, my mum said to me, "I was walking past the charity shop before it was open and I think I saw a baby pony nursery outside." !!!! My girlfriend and I found a picture to show her, and she confirmed it was indeed the Lullaby Nursery (something my gf has wanted since she was 4, by the way, but which what with one thing and another we never got around to buying). Mum said she was going that way later and would go in and see if it was still there.

We were on tenterhooks, but it was even worse for Mum, who later said she'd spent the morning on a rollercoaster of emotions  . She went into the shop and could not see it anywhere, so asked what had happened to the "little house" that was outside that morning. They seemed to have no idea what she was talking about. In a moment of inspiration, she produced her phone and showed them a picture.
"Oh, that," said the manager, "We had to throw that out. It was damaged so we aren't allowed to sell it." Just as Mum was thinking noooo, she added, "If you really want it, you can get it out of the skip out the back."

Thus was the Lullaby Nursery rescued! The manager wouldn't take any money for it, so Mum just made a donation.

It turns out the reason it was thrown away was because it has a mark on the side and is missing part of one of its stickers (you know, the sort of damage you might expect to see on a 30-year-old toy), and they have very strict rules about not selling anything 'damaged'. It makes me mourn for my childhood, when rules were less strict and we were always picking up dilapidated toys at low prices!

Anyway, the Nursery is now home and has been admired and exclaimed over. My girlfriend was hugging it earlier and saying, "I have waited 21 years to own one of these!!" It is rather dirty (which actually makes me happy, as I love a restoration project). But! There's more to come! It was taped shut with Sellotape and rattled enticingly....opening it up, we found it was full of accessories!!!! I think the only things missing are the bath, the towel, the teddy bear and a plate. Oh, and Baby Tiddly Winks wasn't there, but that's okay as we already own her. We got the swing, the rocker, the rattle, bottles, the little dinky mobile, the crib....there was even a little handmade blanket for the crib, with the name Natasha written on it. Natasha, we don't know who you are, but thank you for sending your nursery to the charity shop!

This all seems especially awesome as we have had a bit of a tough time recently, and my girlfriend is currently suffering from sinusitis (which she is prone to, especially in times of stress), so we have been going about feeling a bit annoyed with life. Then suddenly the Powers That Be smiled on us and sent us a nursery!

We have now managed to make room for it on our shelves, and are much looking forward to attacking its layers of grime with a damp cloth (being careful around all the stickers of course!). Also, since it was essentially free, it bears the distinction of being our biggest ever pony bargain!

The Pony Gods have smiled on us. Amen  .

In brevis: we got Lullaby Nursery (with most of its accessories) for free, snatching it from the jaws of imminent destruction, and it's super exciting and awesome.

MLP Nirvana / A Greek Backcard Story
« on: September 01, 2018, 03:12:44 AM »
The other evening I decided to translate a Greek backcard story, armed with nothing but some memories of once studying Ancient Greek, a love of fiddling with languages, and a small dictionary. I was pleased with the result and decided to share! Apologies if it's already been done.
Here's the backcard I used: http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/File:Blue-greek-sunlight-backcard.jpg (not my picture, somewhat obviously)

Backcard Story!:
Once upon a time, in the fairytale land of PONY, there lived in the Castle of the Heavens, the Princess [Moondancer] with her little dragon.
The Castle of the Heavens was the colour of roses while the turrets were the deep blue of a spring sky.
When the Princess threw a party, the little dragon gave the order to open all the gates of the castle, to lower the drawbridge and let the trumpets announce the great celebration. Immediately, the joyous news spread to the ends of the earth. And then, all the Fairytale Ponies and the Pony Stars, looking their best, with their long hair beautifully combed, stunning in their beauty and grace, came to the Castle of the Heavens to honour the Princess.
The Star Ponies adorned the festivities with their dazzling beauty, while the unparalleled grace of the Fairytale Ponies made it all the more brilliant.
Sunbeam wore the sun in her hair, Twilight was adorned by stars, and Firefly came to the party with her beautiful blue mane streaming as she flew through the clouds.
Melody, the most coquettish of the Pony Stars, wore her beautiful notes as she went to the party with Glory, shining with grace and beauty.
Skydancer, the fastest of all the ponies, always reached the party first, unlike Parasol, who was always late.
Sunlight came with her excellent colours to brighten the party, while Starshine, together with Windy, brought to the celebrations happiness and high spirits.

Some notes:
1) Prigkipopaula, meaning 'princess', is Moondancer's Greek name, implying that Moondancer is the resident of the castle. Majesty, you've been usurped!
2) The castle's name is Kastro tou Ouranou. Ouranou comes from Ouranos, meaning heaven or sky. So Castle of Heaven, Sky Castle....whatever, we all know it's Dream Castle they're talking about!
3) Melody is said to be "naziara", which means she is full of affectation, putting on a cutesy act, something like that. It sounds a bit unkind! 'Coquettish' seemed the kindest translation I could come up with.
4) Starshine and Windy actually bring three things to the party, eutuchia (happiness, contentment; comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning good luck), kephi (merriment, high spirits, good humour) and drosia (coolness, dewiness - I think implying that Windy brings a cool breeze? I wasn't sure how to translate this so as not to ruin the flow of the English).
5) The word translated as party is "giortê", meaning celebration, feast day, festival, that sort of thing.

The Ponies' Names:
Glory is Augerinos, the Morning Star. Since in Greek folklore Augerinos is a boy who is turned into a star, Glory is probably meant to be male: that's perhaps why she goes to the party as the companion of 'coquettish' Melody!
Sunbeam is Chryssomallousa, "golden hair"
Firefly is Pêgasos, "Pegasus"
Moondancer is Prigkipopaula, "Princess"
Melody is Melodia (pretty obvious)
Twilight is Astrophengia, "starlight"
Starshine is Neraida, "fairy"
Skydancer is Astrapê, "lightning"
Windy is Anemos, "wind" or "air"
Moonstone is Ouranos, "heaven" or "sky"
Sunlight is Anatolê, "sunrise"
Parasol is Protobrochi, "first rain of autumn"

Hope you enjoyed my linguistic ramblings, and apologies for any inaccuracies, I'm not a linguistic genius, I'm just having fun :)

Pony Corral / Pony Names in Translation
« on: August 28, 2018, 01:48:38 AM »
I love ponies (obviously!) and I also love foreign languages. So just lately I've been entertaining myself by trying to find out the names of some of my favourite ponies in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Greek (I picked those languages as I know a little of them so feel fairly confident about hunting down pony names in them - though I think I may have been over-ambitious with Portuguese!).

After mentioning my love of translated pony names in another thread, I discovered that other people are fascinated by it too :) yay! So here is a thread for all things name-related. What are your favourite pony names in another language? Do you know of any awesome resources for finding out names used for ponies in other countries? Do you happen to have scans of non-English catalogues/comics/whatever that you feel like sharing?

My favourite discoveries so far are:
- Corsaire (Barnacle in French; sounds so dashing! And apparently in Canada he was Loup de Mer)
- Pfiffikus (Tales Bright Eyes in German; not quite sure what it means, but it's such fun to say)
- Kuschelwuschel (Baby Cuddles in German. Such a lovely snuggly-sounding name!)
- Filiberto & Guendolina (Italian Dibbles & Nibbles. I love the real-person names given to some of the Italian ponies!)
- Pandora (Italian Little Flitter. Apparently Summer Wing ponies were 'Baby Pony Flap Flap' in Italy, which amuses me inordinately.)
- Asinha de Açucar (Starshine in Portuguese. Means "sugar wings", which I think is very pretty)
- Sifflebiz (Wind Whistler in French)
- Bigodinho (this is Twinkles the cat's name on Portuguese/Brazilian packaging. It means "little moustache"!!)

I've been conducting my research so far using My Little Wiki, Chrissytree's accessories website (the MOC section), the Nirvana gallery, and just a bit of Googling. Further sources would be greatly appreciated. I am on the hunt for more Greek pony names, and I would also love to know what Wind Whistler was called in German-speaking countries. This just seems like such a fun aspect of pony history, and way more interesting than the current 'Pinkie Pie is Pinkie Pie EVERYWHERE'.

All rambling about pony names that aren't in English is welcome here :)

Pony Corral / Has anyone taken a G3 ice-skating pony apart....
« on: May 20, 2018, 12:34:27 PM »
....and if so, could you please tell/show me what to expect and how to go about it?

I have a G3 Glitter Glide whose crown no longer lights up, and the cause is something more than just flat batteries. I need to take her apart and look at her electronics. What's the best way to perform this surgery, and what does the inside of a G3 ice-skating pony look like?

The Dollhouse / Barbie & Baby ID
« on: May 01, 2018, 02:04:37 AM »
Hello everybody! I need some ID help. I seem to spend a lot of my time IDing toys :) Hey, it's a hobby.

I'm surprised there isn't some kind of database of Barbies online! As a result I have a Barbie that I haven't been able to identify. She's marked 'Mattel Inc 1966' (which I know is the date of the body mould, not the doll) and also 'Indonesia' (which I think means she dates from the 90s as that was when Barbies started being made in Indonesia). She was naked when I got her, and has painted on pink slippers. Anyone recognise her? https://imgur.com/a/r7XcDOc
I thought I had a photo of her painted slippers as well, but I've lost it. Will take another one later.

I also recently found this cute little baby in a charity shop. She looks like a Barbie baby but has no markings. I'd love to know who she is! https://imgur.com/a/sOnWEf6

The Dollhouse / Doll ID
« on: April 10, 2018, 02:48:54 AM »
Hello everybody! I need some doll identifying help!

I've had this doll since I was about six (so, around 1999), I got her in a charity shop. She has the same proportions as Barbie, but a bigger head. When I got her, she had a blue dress, ankle-length, with a sparkly bodice and a gauzy skirt with white stars on it (I no longer have the dress). I also got another doll at the same time who was in a similar style but had longer hair. She has 'Made in China' on her back, and some marks on the back of her head that I can't read. I'd love to know what sort of doll she is, if she's just a generic Barbie knock-off or something different.
https://imgur.com/eqbHw2S

Also, while I'm here, I may as well ask if anyone recognises this doll. She is from the 1960s/70s (I bought her in a bundle of dolls from that era) and has 'Made in Hong Kong' written on her. The dress isn't original; when I got her she was wearing a woollen outfit which I also don't think was original.

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Toy ID
« on: April 10, 2018, 02:35:50 AM »
Hi everyone! I know there's a whole lot of toy knowledge around here, so hopefully you lovely people can help me identify a few toys.

First up, I found these two in a charity shop recently. I think they're from the modern incarnation of Puppy/Kitty/Bunny/Etc in my Pocket, but I haven't been able to find out for sure. So, are they In My Pocket critters, and if so, what are their names? Are they just fakies or knock-offs? Are they something else entirely?

IDENTIFIED! - Magiki Bunny Matilda & Kinder Surprise Natoon

Next, this little dog. He's about the size of a Sylvanian Families baby, made of squishy vinyl and flocked. His eye is made of felt-type stuff. I've had him since 2004 (charity shop find) but I think he's quite a bit older than that. I'd love to know who/what he is. NB the ribbon isn't original :)

IDENTIFIED! - Sad Sam from the 1980s

This tiny tiny frog! I found it in a box of childhood toys but have no recollection of where it came from. It's not Littlest Pet Shop and doesn't seem to be anything to do with Puppy In My Pocket. Pictured with Disney Little Kingdom Tiana for scale, and also because they make a cute couple :)

Finally, I've had these rabbits since I was about three (that would be around 1996), I remember they came in a set with a hutch to live in but I don't remember what the playset was called or which toy-line it belonged to. It's a long shot, because I think they were cheap pound-shop type toys, but I thought someone might recognise them.

Off Topic / Help identify a weird 90s cartoon
« on: June 14, 2017, 01:03:36 PM »
Many years ago (well, probably around 1997-2000), when I was just a little Shaz, dwelling in the merry land of England, I saw part of a really weird cartoon. I'm not sure if it was a film or just an episode of something; for whatever reason, I only saw a few minutes, but it was so bizarre (even by 90s cartoon standards) that I remember it.
There was some sort of ratlike creature in a very frilly dress, she seemed to be a queen or something. Then a young human girl got put into a pit, which happened to contain a dead gnome. The gnome was pretty large in comparison to the girl and had a white beard. I remember her going "*gasp* a dead gnome!" and kneeling down next to him.
I have tried searching online for this a few times, but have never got far with it. I'm starting to think I made it up! Which would be a shame, as it seems like the kind of odd/dark cartoon I'd probably quite enjoy watching now.
Anyone any idea what it might be?

Toy Box & Games Cupboard / Identifying a doll on a keychain
« on: June 03, 2017, 02:13:31 PM »
Hi all,
Wondering if someone can identify this cute little doll-on-a-keychain I found secondhand. Looks as if she might be meant to represent some anime character or something.

Pony Corral / Help identify a pony-related toy
« on: May 17, 2017, 02:22:13 AM »
Here's a mystery you pony people might be able to solve.
My girlfriend has been reminiscing to me about various pony-related toys she found in charity shops when she was little (this was in the '90s, in England; G1 featured largely). She has a recollection of a toy which she has never seen anywhere since and which we are not even sure of the proper name for.
Her nickname for it when she was about 6 was 'matchy ponies'. It consisted of a sort of large plastic circle with pictures of ponies around it. They were all in a rearing pose and consisted of Cotton Candy, Applejack, Bubbles, Lemon Drop, Blossom and probably some others. The top and bottom halves of each pony picture were separate, so it was possible to move them round and make, for example, a pony with Cotton Candy's head and Applejack's lower body. There was probably a game you were meant to play with it where the aim was to put together matching ponies, but all she remembers doing with it is making up stories about ponies  who got muddled up by magic and became strange hybrid ponies.
So. Has anyone heard of/seen this? Does anyone even know what this type of toy/game is called? We'd really like to find out, and maybe even hunt down a replacement.

Customs / Paint match - Princess Amethyst/Sparkle body colour
« on: June 05, 2016, 01:12:51 PM »
Is there a paint colour that matches the body colour of Princess Amethyst (or Princess Sparkle as I think she's known in America)? I need to do some repainting on a recently repaired Amethyst, and I thought I would ask here before I go trekking round my local DIY store looking at paint charts/trying to mix my own. Hope someone can help.

Introductions / Hello!
« on: January 19, 2015, 08:31:48 AM »
Hello everyone!
Well, after lurking around here for a while, reading up on all things pony-related, I've finally got around to creating an account. So! Hello!
I'm still fairly new to collecting ponies. It all started a little over a year ago when my friend and I were clearing out some of her childhood toys; she had a lot of second-hand G1 ponies when she was little. I was immediately assailed and won over by their immense cuteness (who wouldn't be?). The aforementioned friend took heed of my excitement and bought me a Baby Ribbon for my birthday. From then on I was hooked; my friend and I now co-own a collection comprised of her childhood ponies and some newer acquisitions of mine from eBay. Ostensibly we collect G1 ponies, but three G3s, a G2, and a whole lot of those cute little mini G4 ponies (you can buy them in blind bags in Tesco's!) seem to have found their way into the collection as well....
I feel bound to confess that I am totally addicted to restoring dilapidated/damaged little ponies. Mould, dirty marks, chipped paint, frizzy manes, no tails, faded colouring....it is all so much temptation to me. There's nothing nicer than acquiring a poor grubby little pony and giving her a new lease of life. My greatest triumph so far has been making new wings for flutter ponies. Next project: restoring a princess pony whose assorted flaws include a chipped symbol. Interesting ideas involving chrome silver enamel paint have been entertained.
I realise I've rambled on. Sorry! I can be a bit like that once I get started, especially on the subject of ponies.
Hello again to all fellow pony addicts!
