Pony Head Drier!

After I am done re-hairing a pony, I always put glue on the inside where the hair sticks through so that the hair doesn't fall out.  But it seem like it takes DAYS for the glue to fully dry (or at least it does in Oregon) so I made a drier, specifically for this purpose.  Now, I certainly don't want to wait with a blow-drier, so I build  a pony-head drier!

Supplies:
-An old body shop fragrance oil burner
-Plastic Funnel
-Old Computer Fan Grill
-Extra-small Radio Shack Electronics Fan
-12-Volt Laptop battery charger
-Padded Feet
-Four bolts and nuts
-Electrical Tape
-Dremel

My goal was to draw air up through the funnel with a fan to dry the glue in the pony head faster than just letting it sit, so I rewired an old laptop power source to a fan I bought at Radio Shack so it would run with power from the wall, to direct the air from the fan into the pony head through a funnel.  I drilled several holes in the top (narrow end) so that air could escape from several places so the air to circulate within the pony head to accelerate drying and using an old oil burner to warm the air, I set the fan and funnel on top.  I put felt feet on the funnel to raise it, avoiding a vacuum and creating space for the air to enter.  For stabilization and to keep the plastic funnel from potentially melting or the felt feet from catching fire, even though it probably wouldn't get that hot, I put an old computer grill on top of the burner.  Finally, to ensure the fan wouldn't be damaged by the heat, to maximize air pull, and for peace-of-mind, I secured the fan to the inside of the funnel with four bolts.

Then I stuck on the pony head, plugged it in and voila!  Instead of a coupe days, in a couple hours, she was dry!  Even though this is a very specialized tool for a very specific job, it has been a joy to create and will dry many customs to come.

Everyone has had that "I wish I hadn't done that" moment when caring for a G1.  Something that has worked before suddenly became a problem once another factor was involved or an unexpected problem with a particular pony. I'm hoping that this turns into a resource, not a random disaster story telling thread, for example:

Instead of "one time I dropped my pony in the blender!"
Put stories like "tinsel is more sensitive than regular hair and can only withstand X° temperatures".

In order to help each other avoid these specific pitfalls, share your experiences here, with a big simple warning telling us what to avoid (TINSEL MELTS AT X°) followed by a description of what went wrong.  We may save each other ponies and frustration by sharing our honest mistakes.

CLR CAUSES NEON HAIR TO BLEED

So, I was using CLR to clean the rust off of a tail and I've never had trouble with it before. It's a heavy-duty cleaner for rust, Lime, and Calcium found at most stores. It dries the hair out immediately after use but after you condition it, it's fine.

BUT THEN:

I used it on Caramel Crunch's tail.  She had that neon hair that sometimes bleeds into the vinyl but that didn't happen since I had removed the task for cleaning but it did bleed on the white hair around it and totally ruined it.  So, it wasn't CLR, I don't think, since I used it on my Sugar Sweet with no obvious bleed but need careful cleaning this neon hair. Not sure if it would happen with other cleaners but:

NEON AND CLR DON'T MIX

I am looking for babies in any condition!  I have a trade list below and could take some of those scary bb ponies off your hands cheap, but they are not my preference (in order to make them look normal, I will gauge their eyes out and redo them). My Candy Cane and Rainbow ladies are over 30 so if they want babies, it's got to be soon. Can't wait to see if you and I can make a trade.

I'm guessing that most people either start out with their childhood ponies or end up collecting them first, setting off the chain reaction we all know so well, but maybe there are childhood ponies you still haven't reconnected with.  I know I am still looking for Bride Pony (with cake, veil, and ring) but who are you still waiting for to come home?

Off Topic / Weird things your dog is obessed with
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:56:34 AM »
For some reason my dog has recently started watching the hot water heater like it's going to start talking to her or give her a treat.  I can only think that she can hear the water inside, but we have lived here for over a year and it just started last month.  She will sit in the closet and lay next to it with her nose at its base, intently sniffing and searching for...?  We can't find mice, pests, food or anything!

What is your dog inexplicably obsessed with?

Arts & Crafts Corral / My signature art!
« on: February 09, 2014, 11:10:27 PM »
Although I probably need to re-size it, I've been working on it all day, so I had to share.  I took an old mlp logo image and redid a lot of it to make the ponies into G4-ish ponies.  You should be able to recognize them :)

Customs / Re-tailing: call to experts to share!
« on: February 07, 2014, 06:45:30 PM »
Re-tailing: No, not like at the mall, but putting a tail back into a pony that needed to be de-rusted, cleaned, or replaced...but there is the trick of putting it back...

1. How do you put an old tail back without messing it up?

2. Sometimes metal elements cause rust so, what do you use to anchor a tail when you have removed the metal elements? Beads?  Crimps?

3. Is there a good technique to take the metal elements (like the crimps) off of a tail?

How do YOU re-tail?

Pony Corral / "Highlighter Marks" are not children's fault! Science!
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:52:00 PM »
So, as I have been trolling ebay ("trolling" in the traditional searching way, not the mean way) I have been noticing that people see highlighter marks on ponies and I thought that was a little strange that SO many kids use highlighters on ponies.  Plus, it's always yellowish-green highlighter.  Well, after collecting and noticing patterns on my own 2nd set of rainbow ponies (year 3) I noticed that these ponies have a higher likelihood of highlighter.

Think of the following:
1. Notice how BRIGHT the yellow streak is in this series?
2. Notice how mane colors FADE?

On a side note, where do colors "go" when they fade?  Well, I haven't noticed the yellow fade, although the blue and pink certainly do.

Take a look at the colors here: http://www.ponylandpress.com/us/rainbow2.shtml

My theory is that the "highlighter marks" are actually the bright yellow mane, after 30 years, laying color down on the vinyl pony.

Maybe this point has been belabored by veterans, but I found it a common possible misconception.

Introductions / Introduction Post
« on: February 05, 2014, 07:35:26 PM »
I sure would love to see the other areas of the site.  Maybe once you get to know me?

Personal:

How old are you?
28 and a half.

Where do you live? State, Country?
Portland, Oregon, USA

Do you work or attend school? Profession or major?
I'm a substitute teacher and an artist.  I take classes periodically and love psychology (my major for my undergrad).

Who are the important people in your life?
My boyfriend Reid, who supports my obsession, and my two darling babies: Annie and Toby, Westie-poodle-pomeranian mixes.

Ponies:

How long have you been collecting?
Only a couple of months.  But I am hooked.

Which generations of ponies do you collect? G1, G2, G3 or G4?
As a child of the 80s, I am a collector of the G1's (I have a weird feeling attempting to customize that generation) and obtain the other generations as customizing fodder.  Lately I have been able to find a few newer generations that are dead-perfect hair matches for older ones.  For me it's only realistic to try to match series like rainbow ponies since I have several to use to try to match the colors.

What made you want to collect ponies?
Partly childhood nostalgia and I LOVE RAINBOW-Y THINGS.  A girl from my boyfriend's work likes ponies too and it made me feel comfortable enough to go for it, even though I am almost 30.

Tell us about your collection!
I only collect G1 ponies with multi-colored hair:
-Candy Cane Ponies
-Rainbow Ponies (both years released)
-Sunshine Ponies
-Brush n' Grow Ponies
-Random other ones with multi-colored hair like Pillow Talk and the Year 1-7(?) Unicorns.

Introductions / Did I just figure out how to post? Maybe!
« on: February 05, 2014, 07:13:23 PM »
I know, I am a total n00b to this site and a little bit to ponies as well, but I am totally obsessed!  I love customizing and refurbishing (my G1 confetti pony is looking great with her new hair!) and I am excited to fill out my collection and express my creativity through ponies!

Thanks to Miss (who I met on ebay earlier) to reminding me to get on the forum!
