Pony Corral / Aurora and TY Beanie ponies found in Calgary!
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:57:22 PM »
Heads up, Albertans! Discovery Hut in Chinook Centre has a pretty impressive array of pony items. Masquerade brushables, metal lunchboxes, pony Monopoly, and plushies! They have the Aurora plushies, the TY Beanie Babies, and those sparkly purses with teeny plushies inside.

Pony Corral / Old Canterlot items spotted at TRU
« on: October 10, 2013, 01:11:52 PM »
Just a cool little oddity that I had to share. I was at TRU today to get the EqG deluxe Fluttershy (no deluxe Rarity yet), when I saw something unexpected. They had the old Target/Superstore FS Luna/Celestia 2-pack, and the Celebration at Canterlot Castle with Shine Bright Twilight and Starbeam Twinkle! :what:

Off Topic / Just great...now I have to go to Otafest.
« on: September 02, 2013, 02:59:13 PM »
http://otafest.com/guests

Why? WHY does Tabitha St. Germain have to be at Otafest and not Calgary Expo? I went to Otafest last year for the sole purpose of meeting Andrea Libman, and aside from that I really didn't enjoy myself.

Maybe it's a simple case of being spoiled by Calgary Expo, but Otafest feels really poorly organized to me. It's spread out all over the U of C campus so it's hard to find anything. Nobody was checking for wristbands going into the building with the special guests, so it would be all too easy to get the autograph I wanted and leave without paying the entry fee. (Not that I would do that. I'm just sayin'...:shifty:) Worst of all, there was no warning beforehand that I would have to provide my own item to be autographed! I found that out when I got there, and I was lucky that there was a pony print vendor set up outside of the main vendor area. Don't even get me started on that...I never got into the main vendor area! The lineup was well over an hour long. :faint: I just got Andrea Libman's autograph and left.

Not this time. This time I'm coming prepared. I have enough notice this time to get a ticket well in advance, and I'm making my own picture to be autographed. It's gonna be sweet...I'm compiling a list of every FiM character that Tabitha has ever voiced. It's a long list!

*sigh* I feel better now. :) Now let's hear about your convention stories! I know a bunch of you have met awesome people like Andrea Libman and Tara Strong before!

Arts & Crafts Corral / EQD Artist Training Ground 2013

Pic's kinda big, so...

I haven't been keeping up with it, but today's prompt instantly gave me a great idea. Draw a pony on a hilltop or a pony on the rise. On the hilltop is my ponified Peter Venkman, and my ponified Ray Stanz is on the rise. ^.^ (Peter's cutie mark is not based on Flash Sentry's. I settled on a design before seeing Equestria Girls, and only now noticed how similar they are. I Pinkie promise, it's just a coincidence!)

I REALLY need to buy a damn scanner. :throw:

Pony Brag Arena / A great day for gathering ponies.
« on: July 15, 2013, 04:30:35 PM »
My ever-growing g1 herd welcomed four new members this weekend, purchased from the awesome lovesbabysquirmy. (My hand isn't co-operating enough to tie on the new ribbon you included just yet, but it's getting there! ^.^) These girls will be loved.

After picking up Bow Tie, Cotton Candy, Gusty and Glory, my sweetie and I stopped in at the comic book store. I told him I'd make it worth his while to come with me that day, so I bought him an Asterix book and he was happy as a clam. I went there in the first place to get the Applejack micro series, and lookie who I found!

They had Masquerade Pinkie, Dashie and Rarity too, but Sunset Shimmer is the one I really wanted.

Pony Brag Arena / Completed a blind bag set!
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:30:09 PM »
:whew: Gathering all 24 in stores was a pain, but today I polished off wave 6! I misread a couple of bags along the way, so the extra Roseluck and Twilight Sparkle are up for trade.

118 down, 88 and 13 cards to go!

Pony Brag Arena / Calgary Expo 2013 haul

I found a vendor with a big tub of ponies, so naturally a few came home with me.

I must have spent 15 minutes digging through the box of blind bags to find Twilight Sky. Only one vendor had wave 4. Everyone else just had wave 7 which I already have the whole set of. Parasol has some marks and a mane trim, but she's still beautiful! Little Speckles seems to be in great shape, only needing a wash. I had to grab Soda Float when I saw her! She has a little rub on her cutie mark, but I really want the whole set of scented ponies. She was a minor grail. ^.^ (Is it just me, or does she smell more like cream soda than root beer?)

The Dr. Whooves shirt and the Egon figure were impulse buys. :P

Off Topic / Favorite celebrity encounters?
« on: April 25, 2013, 11:21:19 PM »
Calgary Expo starts tomorrow and I'm gonna meet Weird Al and Walter Koenig! :frolic: I got my badge and wristband today and I'm soooo excited! It's making me think about all the other awesome celebrities that I've been lucky enough to meet. Adam West, Ray Park, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, the entire bridge crew of Star Trek TNG plus Denise Crosby and Will Wheaton, Tara Strong, Andrea Libman, John deLancie...yeah, I have a nice collection of autographs.

Out of all the celebrities I've met, my favorite has to be Maurice LaMarche. (Patrick Stewart was a close second...the man is warm and friendly and just radiates charm. :lovey:) I met him at Calgary Expo 2 years ago. Somehow I missed his name in the program, so I didn't know he was going to be there. I think I actually squeed and did a happy dance when I saw the autograph table. ^.^ He wasn't scheduled to be there until the next day, which was perfect because I had time to run home and get something that I wanted autographed.

Even waiting in line to see him was entertaining! He was between Jess Harnell (voice of Wacko Warner) and Rob Paulsen (voice of Pinky, of Pinkie and the Brain), and all three of them were having a blast with the crowd. Their autographs were free and they were more than happy to pose for pictures. A great time was had by all. Maurice had by far the longest line, and most of the people were having Futurama merch signed. Since he does a staggering number of voices (I'm STILL finding voices that he's done that I didn't know about), people would tell him who their favorite is and he would speak to them in that voice! I spent a good hour in line listening to Calculon, Morbo the news anchor, and Lrrr the king of Omicron Persei 8. *sigh* Nerd heaven!

Finally it was my turn. I told him that I loved all of the voices he does, but I would always think of him as Egon Spengler. He smiled like nobody had brought that up yet, and he spoke to me in Egon's voice. The Real Ghostbusters was my childhood obsession, and I still have a major passion for it. Suddenly I was hearing one of my childhood heroes actually speak to me. I was so happy I almost cried. To this day, that autographed Ghostbusters firehouse dvd case is one of my most prized possessions.

Have any of you had a memorable encounter with a celebrity? I wanna hear your stories!

Confound these ponies...they drive me to create. My self-imposed deadline for finishing this guy is April 26, to be debuted at Calgary Expo. Time is running out and I need all the good vibes I can get right now. :) There aren't many WIP pics right now...I never remember to take them. ^^; I have to work on that. Anyhoo, here's what I have so far.

As much as I love my dragon suits, I wanted a non-fantasy species too. I also really wanted to try making something with hooves. I thought performing at Stampede breakfasts would be a blast, so a horse was the natural choice. He was going to be a generic toony horse at first, but that was before I fell in love with FiM. Soon enough I couldn't resist giving my horse a cutie mark. Making him a pony opened up a whole rainbow of colors to use too. ;) Thus, Flapjack was born! (I don't have a pic scanned in, but his cutie mark will be 3 little pancakes in a triangle formation.)

I started with the feet. It seemed appropriate to use cowboy boots, and Gracie agrees.

For the hoof itself, I started with a 2-litre Coke bottle of all things. I took 2 layers of the hoof shape and MUMMIFIED it in duct tape. A couple of upholstery tacks and a generous layer of Shoe Goo later, I ended up with this.

I can't have Flapjack running around in duct tape hooves, now can I?

Funny story here...to give the hooves some rigidity, I filled the space between the hoof shell and the boot with expanding foam. I neglected to account for just how much the foam would expand. I didn't overfill it or anything like that, but I didn't think to stuff the boot first. The foam expanded downward and crushed the top of the boot in. I spent a couple hours hacking away with a serrated knife, grumbling and cursing, but I carved enough out that I can actually get my feet into them. Derp!

I'll have to get a pic of the finished feet before I fur them, and a pic of the leg padding. I'm especially pleased with how they look together! :accomplished: Pardon the striped pj pants. They just happen to show off the shape pretty nicely.

The head is going to be the hardest part. It's in about 50 pieces right now, and if it doesn't work there's no way I can arrange for a replacement in time. :faint: At the very least, I was able to get the fur locally instead of ordering online. The artist that made my black dragon suit had just enough blue fur left over from one of her personal suits. The pile is a bit denser than what I had in mind, but it'll do! Next weekend (God willing!) I'll be ready to make the bodysuit pattern. Gotta take some pics of that...duct tape dummies are always fun. ^.^

Customs / My first real restoration: Firefly's new tail!
« on: March 13, 2013, 09:17:35 PM »
I picked up a rather baity Firefly at the local flea market. She was dirty inside and out, her symbols were almost completely faded, and the poor girl was missing her tail.

Between a broken-up denture tablet and the awesomeness that is Magic Eraser, she cleaned up nicely. There's a pink marker scribble on one of her hind legs that I couldn't get rid of, but I'm just happy that her "lipstick" scrubbed off. (seriously...did every kid in this city draw makeup on their ponies and store them with markers?) Here she is all clean and minty fresh!

Her symbols were repainted with DecoArt Dazzling Mettalics Ice Blue, and her new tail is Dollyhair Water Nixie. I know the match for Firefly is supposed to be Atomic Turquoise, but that would have been a little too green. I guess this girl has faded over time. She looks so much happier now! ^.^

For good measure, here's my collection of display-ready g1s. Rosedust and Baby Sundance aren't ready for pics yet.

My 30 day challenge is up and God I missed thrifting! Between Goodwill and my Value Village gold mine, I came home with:
  • g3 Island Rainbow
  • g3 Skywishes
  • g3 Strawberry Surprise with her ice cream cone AND she's still scented!!!
  • g3 henna McCheerilee and McToola Roola
  • g3.5 Twist n Style Starsong
  • g4 2012 McLily Blossom

And keeping the g1 streak going, I found her in a bag of Strawberry Shortcake dolls (which are for trade!). Behold...my first g1 baby, and my first BBE. Baby Sundance!

The poor thing will be beheaded and cleaned out, but what should I do with those eyes? Only one eye has lashes left and I don't know if that can be fixed. What do you think, everypony? Should I do my best to salvage her current eyes, or just go for it and normal-eyes her? (lol I love that term.)

Off Topic / Cilantro: love it or hate it?
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:20:46 PM »
I'm watching an obscene amount of Food Network lately. ^^;

Anyway, what do y'all think? It's one or the other. Cilantro has no middle ground. Personally, I hate it. It's supposed to taste all bright and fresh, but to me it tastes like sweat and it contaminates everything it touches. :X

Arts & Crafts Corral / Draw every day in February
« on: February 05, 2013, 04:47:59 PM »
A buddy of mine did this challenge last year, and I thought it would make a nice distraction from my 30 day challenge. These are nothing special...just fun little pencil sketches using prompts from EQD's Newbie Artist Training Grounds. (If anyone has ideas for cutie marks, I'd love to hear them!)

Trader & Shipping Support / Does Big Bad Toy Store always take this long?
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:15:46 PM »
I preordered a box of the wave 7 blind bags on January 5th and it still hasn't shipped. At least I'm assuming I'll be notified when it does ship. I'm getting impatient. :stressed: What do you guys think...should I wait it out, or cancel and buy a box elsewhere? Either way, I don't think I'll buy from BBTS again.

Pony Brag Arena / Thrifting Spree!
« on: January 26, 2013, 07:45:03 PM »
I'm doing a 30 day pony challenge very soon, so today was one last hurrah before giving it up for a month. Struck GOLD at Value Village today for less than $20! I miss thrifting for ponies already. T_T

In 4 big bags I found:
    • A cute rubber duckie. I seem to remember a member here that collects rubber duckies...
    • Another of those hippo-faced fakies. White with red and blue hearts for a cutie mark. This one has iridescent tinsel in her hair!
    • 2 Remco-looking fakies. One big, the other teeny.
    • A little blue fakie with a great big head and tiny eyes. Kinda creepy...
    • A g2 McDonald's Ivy. My first g2!
    • 2 2011 McFluttershys. One for the collection, one for trade.
    • A 2007 g3.5 McDesert Rose. I still don't like g3.5s, but this one is growing on me.
    • 2 g3.5 Rainbow Dashes. They'll get a good wash, then it's straight to the trade list.
    • g3 Rainbow Dash 3. I really like that pose!
    • g3 Denim Blue. Dirty in places, but still has glitter!
    • g3 Fizzy Pop. Beautiful girl, but it's gonna be a challenge to tame that tinsel.
    • g3 Sno-Glo. Excellent condition. No marks on her at all!
    • g3 Wishawhirl. What cool colors!
    • g3 Daffidazey. Quite dirty and has had her tail chopped.
    • g3 diva pose Wysteria. This one's too funny...I'll post a pic later.
    • g3 Morning Monarch. MOAR GLITTER! MOAR TINSEL! I squeeeed out loud when I found her.

I'm still not done. Best of all, I scored a pair of g1s too! ROSEDUST and BABY LEAFY!!! :frolic: Leafy has a nasty red mark his (her?) display side cutie mark, but I think I can touch it up. Rosedust needs some serious work. She's very dirty, wingless and tailless, but I love a project pony.

I left a few behind for other people too. :P For my fellow Calgarians, there's a g3 Scootaloo 3 at the Midnapore Value Village, loads of McPonies at the 32nd Ave location, and Chinook has a g3 Butterscotch (not sure which version) and a light blue breezie (couldn't see which one).
