The Dollhouse / Na!Na!Na! by mgae
« on: December 19, 2019, 12:17:42 PM »
MGAE has become notorious for its L.O.L., slime and poop toys as well as creating tons of waste by packaging the blind surprises in layers and layers of extra plastic.

For years I thought "ha, this is not my thing. Hate the style, hate the blind bags, hate the waste" but behold... the power of darkness:

https://nananasurprise.mgae.com/#/shop?module=watch&id=2&name=na!-na!-na!-surprise-reveal!

They finally got me with this. I love this. Whyyyyyyyy?!

What I got to give credit for: MGAE hops on trends super fast. Not always to my liking. Like selling instagram "erotic model" looks/fashions to little girls is highly questionable to me, as well as their brand parodies that only push more consumerism.
But these little dollies right here are totally bringing back soft fashion dolls with "painted on" faces. Something that has been popular amongst toy creators for a long while already and virtually no mainstream toy company jumped on it. Now MGAE did.

These dolls have two added boni:
-the packages are only fake blind. Each doll has a symbol, so if you only want to get one you can now!
-the added surprises are not some crap but come in the form of key chains, purses, pet plushies or fashions for the dolls.

The dolls also look like they have good quality stitching and clothes. I like their little fists.

So yeah... I pray these won't come over to Europe because then I'd feel compelled to get one. How about you? Yay, nay or just done with MGAE?

Off Topic / Konmari anyone?
« on: November 15, 2019, 05:11:43 AM »
Is anyone decluttering using the technique made famous by Marie Kondō and how does is work out for you?

I am currently trying to use it for minimizing my collections but I am struggling. Some things don't spark joy but at the same time I remember how hard it was to get them and that makes me hesitate to sell them off.

I usually put these items in a box out of sight, out of mind to come back later and think again.

Off Topic / What are you gonna be for Halloween?
« on: October 26, 2019, 11:32:12 AM »
I am usually going a more grusesome, traditionally halloweeny route for my costumes (mummy, werewolf, monster...) but this year I am going to get a little more girly and be a (creepy) wind-up doll. Cracked porcelain skin, key in back and stuff.

What about you?

Off Topic / Where do you go to make new friends as an adult?
« on: September 21, 2019, 08:31:15 AM »
This subject has been on my mind for a while. I noticed that things changed since I was a teenager and it was normal to chat up same-aged people and have a convo, get to know them. To add a bit of info, my teens are 13 years ago

I didn't exactly struggle before to meet new people because I was school hopping and had way more hobbies that required being part of a team or club or something. I also have a group of friends but they are scattered and not often available due to jobs, life, etc. I met most of them via school.

I sometimes meet new people via my friends (so, friend's friends) or at parties but I noticed real new friendships don't evolve from that. It seems like people are really lazy about communication these days (a lot of them hate to pick up a call, they just want to text and rarely meet in public?)
I also blame social media where people are just dumping their life and expect you to follow it and do your own research on them.

So... what do you specifically do to meet new people?
And... how do you approach people with intentions of friendship? Especially women seem to be really suspicious these days about being "creeped on" and I generally avoid talking to men that much because they might think I want to flirt with them.

Do you usually meet people at parties and it turns into friendship organically? Do you approach people at social gatherings? Teach me your ways

Pony Corral / FiM S9 E20 "A horse shoe in"
« on: September 18, 2019, 01:41:58 PM »
I like all Starlight eps (yes, even the one where she is a bad Mr. Scrooge stand-in  :P) so I am biased.

Trixie expects Starlight to give her a certain position at the School of Friendship just because she is friends with Starlight while Starlight herself wants to find the best pony for the job based on an audition process.

Spoiler
It was obvious none of the auditioning ponies would get the job, that was the big weak point about the episode for me. It would have been a bit more impactful if Sunburst had been considered from the start and Trixie was competing with him.
But I liked it regardless.

Uniko/Unico - is a unicorn who helps people who show love towards him, but he is cursed to forget them after he's become friends with them. He was created by Osamu Tezuka. There are three movies about him:
-Kuroi Kumo Shiroi Hane (1979, Japan)
-Unico (also known as Fantastic Adventures of Unico) (1981, Japan)
-Maho no Shima (1983, Japan)

The Last Unicorn (1982, USA) - Rankin Bass adaption of the novel by Peter S. Beagle. All hail our overlord Amalthea! Seriously, which MLP fan doesn't like Last Unicorn at least a bit?

Ico, el caballito valiente (1983, Argentina) - Ico and Preciosa look eerily similar to FiM ponies, just with better anatomy. I fully believe Lauren Faust ripped their heads off and planted them onto G3.5 bodies

I see a pattern... the early 80s loved these magic horsies. Of course there is also talking horse sidekicks like the She-Ra and Rainbow Brite horses Swiftwind and Starlite.
Can you add more to my list?

Twilight is tasked with creating a new holiday and the preparations for it since the princesses are still set on retirement.
Saruman Grogar is still too stupid to realize his minions have hidden his bell in plain sight. Mama, papa and baby are following their own plans working together to wreck havok. Discord is the audience stand-in.

Off Topic / Disney will remake Bambi in new Lionking style
« on: August 20, 2019, 03:34:43 AM »
I never paid money to see any of these remakes so I don't feel responsible for this

https://insidethemagic.net/2019/08/bambi-live-action-remake/

Everyone please read the REAL original "Bambi" which is a book by Jewish author Felix Salten who had to flee Nazi Austria and was asking publishers not to change or censor his works to make them more "suitable for children".

He never received royalties as he didn't sell the rights to Disney himself. All he got was a brief mention in the credits of the Disney Bambi movie that was now changed and heavily sweetened up and censored for the American public.

This PSA has been brought to you by me, fan of the original, who doesn't like soulless CG animals voiced by celebs :P

Pony Brag Arena / Zaps Brags
« on: August 17, 2019, 04:37:59 AM »
So I finally get to have a fleamarket brag thread, too!
I usually am always out of luck at fleamarkets. I am watching for ponies like a hawk but when I see something ponyesque it's usually a knockoff, Mia and Me, or ugly Barbie stuff.

But today... behold... I LUCKED OUT!

My horsey findings in summary:

-G3 Pretty Parasol
-G3 Sweetberry
-G4 Feathermay
-Grand Champions drafter stallion (need ID)
-Grand Champions drafter mare (need ID)
-old Barbie horse
-coffee box from the 60s

Now onto the pics:

The Barbie horse is super messed up and yellowed but it's my favorite mould and since the hair can be saved this one is a perfect repainting candidate. I am happy to finally own this mould. I love the old Barbie horses because they still looked like horses and not vaguely equine things.

Feathermay has her usual discolored head but is otherwise perfect. I am unsure if I'll keep her after her spa. But I am happy I have found her in the wild!

Sweetberry is super dingy with pen marks all over her. She needs TLC but I always wanted her (diva pose lover), so this girl is going to stay.

Pretty Parasol is in great condition! Even her hair. After her spa she will be gorgeous.

About the Grand Champions... I have never owned one and I am a total n00b. But they are gorgeous fat little horses so I love them. If anyone can identify them PLEASE help.

PS: I also found a flawless, like new Calvin Klein backpack and an almost complete Monster High "Gloom Beach" Draculaura first edition without any eye wonk and perfect hair.
I made so many bargains my head is spinning a little. I won't say what I paid in total but believe me... I am NOT complaining. I did not expect to find so many good and great deals.

I would have picked up even more common G3s but the lady selling them was really strict about the prices. They were all in relatively bad shape (except Pretty Parasol) so I left them behind.
Quote of the day:
Quote
"I can't go cheaper because these are ALL THE ORIGINAL MY LITTLE PONIES".
I was like "yeah I know they are originals, I can see that. I can also see all these pen marks and dreadlocks on them" :P

But hey, I am satisfied with the ones I took home.
Now onto cleaning them up! I'll post a before/after for Sweetberry later on! :)

Pony Corral / MLP Tales appreciation thread
« on: August 02, 2019, 08:23:01 PM »
Ahhh, Tales... that time when we had a Core Seven we didn't hate (?)
Tales was a MLP cartoon that came out in the 90s as a vehicle for later G1 toys, and ran for only one season worth of episodes. It was set in a human style world and not a High Fantasy land.

I created this thread to talk about all things Tales, from characters to episode discussions to screengrabs to photos of your much coveted Tales G1s (they only came out in certain countries... here, they were called "TV Star ponies").

Personally, I love Tales. I think it's weird and funny but also cute and some of the lessons learned aged really well.

What did you think of the characters? I really loved Patch. She was such a nicely done "tomboy" character. She liked soccer, practical jokes, but also liked dance and going to the salon. Her dreamjob was to be a clown and she believed in the supernatural and aliens. Patch was also revealed to be adopted in one episode.
Also, her symbol was so literal and cute. She always looked like she fell on her butt while roughhousing and had an ouchie.
She was awesome and I am still on the hunt for her toy.

The line is ending and I want to know what was the number one draw to you when it comes to collectability? Everyone gets 3 votes.
For me it was old mould brushables, CMC and Equestria Girls minis. What was your G4 fave?

Arts & Crafts Corral / Supporting original artists and creators
« on: June 30, 2019, 10:54:15 AM »
I think a lot of us are supporting fan artists by commissioning customs, drawings/paintings or plushes.
But what about original arts and crafts? When a selfmade collectible or piece of artwork hasno connection to your fandom, do you still put some "fun money" on the side to buy their things? This can be on etsy, your friends, on fleamarkets.

Also, if you are an artist yourself, do you feel a need/duty to support other artists?

His year I bought an incredible needle felt creation from a crazy talented designer I got to know. It was 200€ I did not have. I made a lot of budget cuts where I could (the typical "eating rice for one month", not going anywhere, ect.) and I did a few commissions myself to make it all back.
But it was so worth it. I own a super unique one of a kind needle felt figurine now and I even think the price was too low for all her working hours.

I think original art needs to be supported and I don't mind I can't resell it for a lot. It has a high emotional and artistic value.

What about you? Got any original art toys, plush, drawings, etc?

Pony Corral / MLP:FiM S. 9 Ep. 13 - "Between Dark and Dawn"
« on: June 24, 2019, 05:57:18 PM »
Celestia and Luna are still serious about "retiring" and keep getting into the M6 heroic ways, so vacations are in order to be able to travel Equestria and see more of its sights and people.

Spoiler
As always, Celestia tries to dominate her younger sister, expecting her to conform to her ideas of fun. Celestia turns out to be an adrenaline junkie while Luna wants to do mundane things.

It was a bit of a rehash of the episode where Starlight swapped their symbols. Just less threatening this time ;)
There was a cute sister song and we found out Luna is a fan of the post office ("it's about the process!"). Celestia has to learn over and over again not to treat her sister as her lesser. Looks like these two should just live in separate castles already :P

Does anyone miss when Celestia wasn't quite as 'humanized'? The episode with Fluttershy and her phoenix is still my fave. They all treated her like royalty and went down on their knees when she appeared and now the M6 groan when she approaches in fear of another theater production or her messing up their M6ing
