Off Topic / Planning a trip to Amsterdam... any advice?« on: July 18, 2014, 06:37:27 AM »
Last year my husband and I went to Japan to see the blossoming cherry trees (and look for ponies), next year we want to go Amsterdam to see the tulips (and look for ponies). In our current planning stage, we are wondering where we should go, what we should see, and how long we should stay (and where to find ponies!).
Knowing nothing about the region, I think we could spend 3-4 days hanging around Amsterdam and the tulip fields (I am totally bringing Posey), then what? Should we go to Germany? What's there? Should we go to Belgium or France? And how long should we stay? Is two weeks enough time? Or should we stay for three? Thanks for any insight at all! 124

Pony Corral / *update b/a pics... What is the best way to clean/restore a G1 plushie?« on: July 12, 2014, 08:01:51 AM »
I have a few that need surface washes and I'm wondering how to do it safely. Can I get the whole body wet, or will it get dank in that dense body plush? Can I really only wipe with a wet rag? And the hair... I want to shampoo and condition an comb... is this okay? I also need to sew a tail back on (bad puppy!), what's the best way to do this?
Thanks for any insight! Added 7/16: I think she looks good! Machine wash in a pillow case, air dry, shampoo and conditioned mane and tail. Lots of the tail came out but it still looks pretty full. She's ready for display! Now to wash the others... visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login 128

Pony Corral / Warning! Don't use nail polish remover on...« on: July 10, 2014, 07:32:02 PM »
...Watercolor Baby Sea Pony hair!
I know this sounds stupid and obvious, but I did it (slaps hand. Bad restorer!) She had something awful in her hair, and I tested a little and it seemed okay, then all of a sudden it jammed up and her hair turned STIFF and brittle and I got so scared I ruined my new pony!!! Praise Celestia, a soak in conditioner restored the softness back, but it was touch and go for a while. Please don't make this mistake or you could have a heart attack like I did! It's late, so I'll post an "after" picture tomorrow, but I just needed to get this warning out there... Added: Here she is- Baby Seawinkle. You can still see a gradient of pink from the end of her mane, which was something sticky and hard. It's fairly soft again, and the gradient actually doesn't take away from her looks. We really dodged a bullet on this one! visitors can't see pics , please register or login 130

Pony Corral / What size eye crystals for G2?« on: July 07, 2014, 04:17:11 AM »
Hi! I've got some Michael's coupons and I've heard that Swarovski makes crystals ("elements") that are great replacement for G2 eyes. Before I go over to the store scratching my head, what should I know? I imagine there are different sizes, not sure how they're measured. Anyone know what I should get?

Pony Corral / Can hair stains be sunfaded? w/ pics« on: July 06, 2014, 02:30:50 PM »
I think I found an upgrade for my Mirror Mirror, her only flaw is this stain in her mane. I tried whitening toothpaste, oxiclean, dawn, and general shampoo and conditioners. I even tried a spray-on stain remover but I don't think the color's budged. I'm going to try to sun fade it... if the stain fades but so does the hair, I suppose it's no worse than dark brown stains on normal hair... thoughts? Will it work?

Off Topic / *Update 8/12* Monarch Butterfly Chrysalis in my garden!« on: July 04, 2014, 01:13:45 PM »
Original post in this spoiler:
Spoiler I've been channeling two of my all-time favorite ponies this season- Posey and Dancing Butterflies... and yesterday I found a monarch chrysalis in my raingarden! I see sooo many caterpillars on the milkweed (I have three varieties) but I usually don't ever detect the chrysalises... until routine weeding lead me to this one! If you look closely, you can see the wing pattern along the left side... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Garden location... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Chrysalis night before hatching (Friday night)... color is overall darker and butterfly is becoming more visible... visitors can't see pics , please register or login I missed the emergence! (Emerged Saturday morning). I left the house a little after 5am to go pony hunting... but here is the empty chrysalis... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Here is a different butterfly that emerged just this (Sunday) morning. You can tell it's a newborn because it's body is still quite thick, and it's sitting in the morning air pumping those wings, moving the juices from the body into the wings... visitors can't see pics , please register or login I'll look for more chrysalises throughout the summer. I've "raised" the butterflies and witnessed and recorded the "births", but I really want to share it with more people. Stay tuned, still plenty of caterpillars in the garden! Plant milkweed/free seed offer in this spoiler... Spoiler In the meantime, plant milkweed! Monarchs are on the decline and they need all the help they can get. Do you have a garden where you can sprinkle some milkweed seeds? I have extra that I harvested last year. If you are in the US, please pm me and I will send you a some FREE seeds (with free shipping!). They need full sun, but do well in wet or dry soils! (I'll remove this message when I run out of seeds). The world needs more Dancing Butterflies! By the by, this is the milkweed you will get (the monarch's favorite). A common name is Rose Milkweed, or google its binomial name, Asclepias incarnata, for more information. visitors can't see pics , please register or login **UPDATE 8/12** It's mid August and the last wave of butterflies are laying the eggs that will become the caterpillars that will turn into the butterflies that will fly to Mexico! I'm going to be honest- raising butterflies is not for the faint of heart! There were some losses (mostly due to tachinid flies) but here are some photos of our little caterpillar we called "tiny", pictured in later posts on the G1 baby pony bottle... Hanging in "J" form, preparing to molt final skin. Antennae have gone limp... any minute now! visitors can't see pics , please register or login Whoa that was fast! The caterpillar is green and you can see the skin shed at the top. visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login Getting smaller... firming up... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Skin has dropped, final shape is forming... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Voila! He looks like this for about ten days, then starts to look more clear as the time nears to emerge... visitors can't see pics , please register or login Wow... such a transformation! visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login Minutes away from breaking out, you can see airspaces within the chrysalis as the butterfly pulls away from the sides... visitors can't see pics , please register or login So he emerged, then fell... I had to act fast to get him hanging wings down again... if this is not done within seconds the wings will not form properly and the butterfly will be deformed... I didn't get a pic of him from this critical stage, but here's his sister, "Lady", right when she came out... visitors can't see pics , please register or login The wings grow so FAST! You can SEE them getting bigger in real time. Again, here's Lady... wings still rumpled, and embarassingly not growing at the same rate. Don't worry, they worked themselves out! visitors can't see pics , please register or login visitors can't see pics , please register or login Okay THIS is Tiny with fully formed wings! visitors can't see pics , please register or login Ain't he cute! visitors can't see pics , please register or login Lady on the left, Tiny on the right. visitors can't see pics , please register or login And released! Aw he just would NOT flex his wings for me! (or when he did the pic was blurry!) visitors can't see pics , please register or login He's out there now, helping to create the next generation! Thanks for following the story! 135
Pony Corral / How to clean dirt from hair plugs? w/ pics« on: June 24, 2014, 03:10:59 PM »
Help! I've seen this a couple times now and I can't get it clean! The dirt is jammed into the plugs near the scalp, and no amount of brushing with shampoo and toothbrush will get it un-dirty! What can I do? Boil? Oxi-clean? Anything?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login While I'm at it, how to deal with her tail rust? Doesn't bother me as much as the mane plugs, but since I still got her sudsy... visitors can't see pics , please register or login |
