I'm really excited that Basic Fun is making these. :D  Maybe it's the lighting but the pink and white pony don't look like the swirls go all the way to their heads?

I noticed that, too. It's definitely just the lighting for the pink one, in one pic it looks like she barely has any stripes on her side, but in another pic she clearly has stripes all over, like the others. Can't tell with the other one though.

It might be that they have lighter/less swirls on their faces in general? That's how it was on the original art.

I'm losing my MIIIIIIIIND over these!!  Gorgeous!!

On Instagram xcanadensis said the mock-up of the box said "Celestial Ponies" as the set name. She said she was making a long drive home from whatever retail or trade event this was, but would post more info when she could.

Mock up of the box behind the pink pony, I love it.

Edit:  The event was the Dallas Toy Fair

They look so good!!! I’m so happy these girls are finally being made. :) And with their headpieces!

I’ll be interested to see how the swirls look in real life. In this pic like Ponyfan noted the swirls don’t seem to be very consistent on their bodies. I hope it is in fact just the lighting, but that light blue one in the back is bugging me! Her body swirls are so intense, but then her face doesn’t match at all.

I think so far my fav is the blue one in the front with the storm cloud symbol! Her swirl design looks the best and I love her color scheme!

Very excited to see these in their final form! These are prototypes (and not entirely finished) according to XCanadensis,  so I'm guessing the final productions will all have swirls on their faces as well as their bodies- you can actually see a second sample of the pink and blue pony with the swirls on her face in some other photos!

Admittedly I'm disappointed they used Tootsie Pose (least favorite) and would have preferred to see Sugarberry Pose, but I do love Posey pose so at least I'll have 2 other ponies to choose from!

Apparently this set has already been ordered by Amazon so there's one guaranteed retailer already. Hopefully the others will be stocking them and the rest of the 40th anniversary ponies!

Still hoping we'll get a Birthday Pony repro lol

That's incredible! I never would've expected such a bizarre and obscure pick for the next release! I honestly don't think we could've gotten another set better than Celestial Ponies. You can say reproductions of Sea Ponies, Big Brothers, etc. would be awesome. I mean sure, but c'mon, revitalizing four completely scrapped ponies from 30+ years ago is unbelievable. It's salvaging a little piece of production history!

I think it’s cool that they are making the celestial set that never got released, but i hope they actually release all four of them!!

The re-release of the collectors ponies is very disappointing though. I understand it’s the 40th year and those ponies would be the only ones actually turning 40, but they just sold them 5 years ago…I feel like most collectors will pass on them since we just bought them and the only difference is the box.

I think it’s cool they went into the plushies and the smaller plastic mystery box ponies, I don’t collect them but I’m happy for others who do and more is better than nothing. So I’ll take it. Lol.

So when they said they were making the flower fantasy ponies, did they get themselves confused with the names and actually mean these?

I'm genuinely stunned to see them...I really hope that this makes it to shelves everywhere without a hitch.

I had a look at the link to the original insta page and saw some interesting G1 merch floating around there as well - plushes and what look like G1 blind bags?

I know the Celestials are the bigger news though xD.

Question - are there not four in the set in the artwork? Will we get four in this set or is it going to be three??

Also, is this for sure autumn 2023 and not this autumn to winter (I guess since they're convinced next year is the anniversary, it'd make sense, but it's so far away considering they're at a fair?)

I am so happy! This is so much more exciting than all the re-releases. So many collectors have dreamed of these being made  :sunny: In the original artwork they have quite long legs, which made me think they would be in the Pony Bride pose if ever produced, but that would mean they're all in the same pose which would be boring. I'm very relieved they did not pick the Sweetheart Sister poses because I don't like those.

Yes! I am incredibly happy that we ended up getting Celestial Ponies afterall, after all of these years. I will most definitely be grabbing these at some point.

They look gorgeous, too, so nicely designed.

I love them & will be buying obviously, and not to look a gift horse in the mouth (lol) but to echo what others have said - hoping we get the fourth as well, a little sad about Tootsie pose, and wish the pink bodied pony had more Medley coloured hair than Firefly. Collectors have done such a good job over the years reconceptualising/making them that I feel a bit spoiled!! :P But these are not fully done so let's wait and see... and hope for widescale distro

Omg this is so awesome!!! I haven't bought G1 merchandise in years but I will definitely be buying these. They're so gorgeous!!

You know, I can only assume they're putting out this set specifically because of the G1 pony collecting community. We are the ones who talk about this set, share the production art, make our own versions, and generally keep knowledge of these ponies alive. It's so awesome to see something new for us!
Title: Re: Basic fun Celestial Ponies
Post by: Taffeta on September 21, 2022, 01:20:09 PM
That was super interesting. I do like the idea of sets for the shows, even though I'm not so show orientated. Less moved on the idea of store exclusives since in G3 that was very problematic for overseas folks. Hope they're thinking of that for their export products...

I don't mind if the pink celestial pony happens and is in CJ's pose. I've come to love it.

The shade of hair on the darker pink celestial is quite pretty, a bit more teal under the light?

The plushes are adorable. I need one to put on my (already completely lacking in space) bed.

Basic Fun listen to us, Hasbro don't. There lies the difference in a nutshell. BF are trying to market stuff that they think will be popular and so they pay attention to the fanbase. Hasbro are off in their own world of Equestria and mane 6 still, even despite G5. It's a world of difference.

May many young kids be bewitched by those softie plushies next year.
Title: Re: Basic fun Celestial Ponies
Post by: Carrehz on September 21, 2022, 03:08:07 PM
Thanks for linking to the vid :) So the Celestials are set for an Autumn 2023 release, and they confirmed the ones w/o swirls on their faces are just an earlier prototype, that's good to hear. I hope the fourth Celestial does show up sooner or later :)

And they said they want to make Ember smaller than the others, omg! That'll be adorable ;o;

The RaMC 6-pack includes Firefly, Medley, Moondancer, AJ, Bow-Tie and Twilight, and (if I'm understanding it properly) those characters will be exclusive to that set and won't be in the blind boxes. Which is a bit confusing since I think some of them were listed on the blind box packaging they have there, but I guess the packages are still mock-ups and they haven't finalized the details on them yet? *shrug* And it sounds like they do want to make more sets after this! eeeeeeeeeee

I love the idea of cartoon-themed sets - it'd be even cooler if they could add in some of the show-only characters like Tirac, Scorpan, the witches, Queen Bumble and Sting, etc.  Like, if they could make sets that are mostly ponies but with one or two non-pony characters, that'd be great.

And I love the plushies <3 They're really cute. I love how they're a new design, not total 1:1 repros of the originals, but they still kept some of the original details like Moondancer's horn being gold, etc.

And re: Basic Fun listening to us - yup they totally are!! Remember the letter writing campaign we had for the Celestials back when Basic Fun first started making retro ponies? :lovey: I guess they had to make sure there was actually a market for ponies (which of course there is, but you know how toy people work :P) before they did anything new?

Man, I was disappointed that they didn't have any releases planned for this year back when they first told us that, but now I don't mind at all if this is what they've got in store for us next year!! Guess they wanted to take the year off to work on making next year's releases really shine ^^

This is really cool! That Basic Fun would be able to release an unreleased series is quite incredible! I was afraid that the MLPs would eventually stop coming but it looks like there's enough of a market for them to not only keep them up but also take such a big step as this!

The video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UFV-jemW24&ab_channel=xCanadensis) has so much GREAT info, seriously watch it if you have a minute!

Yeah, I think the write-in campaign to Basic Fun a few years ago is how they learned about the Celestials!  In the video the Basic Fun rep said something like "We are listening when collectors, people who love the brand, write us notes".  Huuuuge thanks to everyone who wrote in, the community really made this happen!  (Well, the community plus Basic Fun!)  BIG THANK YOU to everyone who wrote in!  We did it!

The girl making the video also mentions that, even though she had a press pass to the event, most companies simply would not let her in their booths and some were rude about it . . . but Basic Fun welcomed her in and gave her a tour and were nice.  Which is an attitude that goes well with MLP and Care Bears. <3

The Basic Fun rep talked about how they are planning on Amazon being the main distributor, but the Target buyer hadn't come buy yet so possibly they would want them too.

The Celestial pony box is a very early mock up, so early that it doesn't even have pictures of ponies on the back.  But this is what the side looks like:

So, I don't think the finished box will show the white pony four times (unless they REALLY want you to collect only her, lol), I think those are just placeholder pictures.  To me this suggests they will release the entire set of four ponies.

Here's the front of the box, isn't it lovely . . .

HUGE SHOUT OUT THANKS for the video reporting!  Yay for Amazon getting the order I will gladly wait to Fall 2023 and please please please Basic Fun I hope ya read these boards = do a sugarberry pose for a pony pose all pink celestial in a sugarberry pose IMO would be devine :)  (and that way can redo sugarberry pose for serena for a future princess pony release, yes??!)

Wow!  They are really doing it!   :good::happy: :frolic:  :accomplished: They look so cool in real life!  I think I like the white one best but the blue one is a close second with those soothing and lovely colors.  Hopefully they will be available more than just on Amazon but if I have to I guess I could bite the bullet and order from them  :P

The blind bags are cool, they really replicated the full-size poses well.

And the plush look great - cute and cuddly and I like the embroidered eyes.  I will definitely buy at least one, maybe some more for gifts. Moondancer plush looks so good  ^.^

Thanks for posting the video and the pics!

Just got a chance to sit down and watch the video, I'm so excited! I'm going to pass on the plushies, since that's not really my thing, but I do like the blind box little ponies. Even with the molded hair and brushable tail, which usually looks awkward, I think these are a very nice quality for that size of toy. They remind me of the Hallmark ornaments. And it's really cool to see merch of ponies who don't get much attention, like Starflower! The artwork for the Rescue at Midnight Castle box is really amazing. I hope that is similar to how it looks when it's released to the public. I think $19.99 is very fair for a set of 6 small toys. Spike is so adorable, even if he is bigger than the ponies. XD

Part of me is disappointed that Amazon seems like the only place willing to work with Basic Fun, and part of me is relieved, because it will mean I will be able to order them and not have to stop at 5 different Targets looking for if any of them are carrying them lol.

I am honestly glad Basic Fun is jumping into the blind box craze. Although as a collector it's a little frustrating, and I'm sure parents are annoyed that this is how so many toys are presented these days, I think it will really help Basic Fun make some money so they can grow and expand.

I watched the Care Bears part of the video too, they're pretty cute! Though I won't be collecting them. (Man, they should give us marbled ponies like the marbled Care Bears! Lol. I'd snatch those up.) Loving the Eco-Love Care Bears made with 100% recycled materials!

Amazon working with BF also helps it globalise. Target is not so helpful for those of us overseas - in the past it's been a big reason why we didn't get large swathes of product (G3 mostly) so while I hope Target does pick them up for folks in the States, I wouldn't want them to be the lead. Bad enough they're going to get an exclusive blindbox option. I don't really understand the US obsession with store exclusives. It's not like it doesn't/hasn't happened here, but it's much more scaled down and, in G1, the only store exclusives the UK had were things Woolworths imported from the US clearance (ponies like Lemon Treats and Mint Dreams that only came out here because of those imports, not as part of the official Hasbro UK release). So yeah, I am anti store exclusives as a rule.

I also didn't notice the pony name on the box, I was too focused on the other details. I also think the 4 on the side means there'll be a full set, and I would expect the fourth to be in CJ's pose, albeit she might not be, because they have a range of earth poses they could use. I am suspecting they chose poses which they thought the swirls looked best on, seeing as the guy talked about the work and attention to detail.

A higher price point is fine with me if it means they get to exist. :)

Did we ever get prototype names for the Celestials from Hasbro?

I'm SO excited for these! I remember when we all wrote BF about making them haha. So good to finally, finally see them! I'm also super curious to see the final product, these already look fantastic!
I seriously hope these will come to Europe, but if they'll be selling on Amazon I'd say there's (hopefully, knock on wood) a decent chance they will. ^^ squeee!

The prototype name for the Celestial set was the Fancy Swirl ponies and the names of the ponies were Mistyglow, Pearlshine, Swirlabout, and Starswirl.  (Hasbro sure looooves the name Starswirl!)

However this is pretty obscure knowledge, I only stumbled across it two days ago, lol.  My guess is that Basic Fun didn't know any of this info and only had the backcard image to go off of.  I'm not sure if Hasbro even knows the names anymore;  I think it might be former Hasbro employees who brought the info to Pony Fair?

Anyhoo I don't mind new names, we have at least three Starswirls already and Celestial ponies sounds much grander than Fancy Swirl ponies.

Ah thanks LadyM! I thought I remembered proto names for these floating around, but I wasn't sure if I was mixing them up with the Nestie babies or not. I like the name Mistyglow... but very glad we're not getting Yet Another Starswirl ;)
(Although that's interesting... G1 Starswirl was one of the Colour Swirls. Hmm - maybe leading more credence to the theory that they're what we got instead of the Celestials?  :wonder:)

I like Celestial better than Fancy Swirl too, very pretty, plus it's easier to remember (Fancy Swirl's too close to Colour Swirl). I forget, where did the name "Celestial" come from anyway? Is that a fan nickname that we've unwittingly elevated to official status? :frolic: I remember the name "Fairy Brights" being tossed around back in the day, too.

When I made my Flutter customs of these 10+ years ago, I used the names Aurora, Nova, Nebula, and Zenith. That was before we found out what their official names would have been a few years later. Not sure whether or not Basic Fun has seen those customs on my FB page and liked the names or if the name choice is a coincidence. Still cool to me, though.

I am so excited for this set and can't wait to buy them!

I'm so happy Basic Fun was so welcoming to the person that made the video.  I'm still not in to releasing the original six ponies again even with the different boxes and brushes but I love everything else.

I'm excited that the six pack RAMC set isn't blind boxed and includes Twilight. :)  I'd much rather buy a set like that and know what characters are included.  That being said I know I'll buy a least a few of the blind boxes just to see what ponies I get.

I know RAMC was the first My Little Pony special and was titled My Little Pony before it was edited for MLP n Friends, but does anyone remember what year it came out? I just checked my VHS and it says 1984.  Did I hear the BF guy say it was 1983?  Not that I'd fault them for being a year off.

I'm so happy to see the Celestial ponies. I hope the white one's name remains Aurora.  I think that's a fitting name for a space themed pony.  I think we'll see the 4th pony too based on the mock up box.

It sounds like Basic Fun was listening to us when we said we wanted the Celestial ponies.  That's really nice that they are aware of the collecting community and what we want to see. :D

Starbrite Sprinkles, I like your names much more :)

I also think Celestial is a fan name, but this is the thing.

When it comes to real issued ponies, I'm very much a stickler for accuracy but these are not real issued ponies. We've seen so many examples of ponies whose names change mid production. There's no reason for these to have any kind of name banded about by Hasbro.

I did think there was something, hence I asked, but I don't like any of those names and am glad if we get different. We might not, though. Aurora might be a place holder name label. It's all up in the air - but I feel like we as a community were a part of the force behind these happening. If they end up with some of our touches in their release, then why not? They're not part of Hasbro's line any more. They're something beyond that and it's weird but cool.

I liked how chatty and welcoming the Basic Fun rep was, too, it's really nice to see that.

Re: the 40th ann. collectors - honestly at this point I'm more amused by them than anything  I have a feeling I'll end up with Cotton Candy at least - got three other decades' worth of CCs (I still need a flatfoot ver!) so at this point, why not?! XD I wonder if there'll be any noticeable differences between them + the previous Basic Fun release, or if it'll just be the different boxes (and brushes?).

Do you know if your VHS was the original release or the later release that came with the Firefly toy? I remember I had the VHS tape that came with Firefly and it was a later release, I had already seen the special many times on TV before I got it.

Many G1 sets came in groups of 6. Wouldn't it be awesome if there were 6 of these!!

I think there's a good chance of 4. I don't think they're going to invent 2 completely new ones for this set :)

@Moonbreeze, I hope so too. If Amazon somewhere picks them up, though, hopefully it will be not too bad for you guys. It sucks that the netherlands haven't been stocking them :/

The UK has been generally lucky, we have had everything and some things early/at the same time as the US, but I'm still always nervous with each set, not knowing what will come out where.

John Lewis seem to have carried the previous TE set in stores - I'm not sure where else, maybe Toymaster franchises. I haven't seen them in Smyths or Entertainer in this area, although both did carry the Glory set in the past. :/

Amazon is currently my best hope.

They might have said it in the video and I missed it, but do we know when the blind boxes will be released? They mentioned fall 2023 for the Celestials, but I wasn't sure if the blind boxes would be the same.

Fall 2023 as well he said, targeted at 3.99

I just watched it again, I'm super impressed that a company that licenses the IP did so much homework that it knows more about the original gen than Hasbro seemingly does nowadays.
(The Glory plushy has the symbol upside down btw, that's a fun factory error)

I am surprised that Hong Kong hasn't been using the molds to pump out fakies by now...

Do you know if your VHS was the original release or the later release that came with the Firefly toy? I remember I had the VHS tape that came with Firefly and it was a later release, I had already seen the special many times on TV before I got it.

I have the original release VHS and that's dated 1984 as well.

edit: The special itself is also dated 1984:

pretty much every tv series and movie released was made one year prior to being released as it takes at least one year to cut and edit before releasing it.  ;) so he was right when saying it was made in 83

Oooh I love those Celestial Ponies. So excited for actual new gen1 ponies! I sold most of my collection and I promised myself I wouldn’t buy more ponies, but I might need to get one of these (or more, if ny daughter likes them too… ;) ).

Whoa! Havent been on in a while and I come back to real actual Celestial ponies being produced?! Incredible. They look amazing already! I really hope Target picks the line up again. Or that the other current retailers continue to sell them. I don't want to have to get them from Amazon if I can avoid it.

The plush look a lot better than the 80s ones lol. Love the eyes!

The blind bags also look really good! Kinda wish they weren't blind bags but I guess that's what the people want these days. Loved that kinda thing as a kid so I understand...but as a collector it's annoying lol. Also wish the hair type was consistant - never been a fan of one part being molded if the other is brushable. But I can live with it.

I LOVE that they're using a Rescue at Midnight Castle theme with similar artwork to that episode. That style was so gorgeous and it still kills me that they changed it for the rest of the series.

Not sure another release of the original 6 is necessary haha. I wish they would at least put them in new molds or something to jazz them up.

Just seeing this today...such exciting news! I'm actually really excited about the little blind bag figures, as that's all I have room for at the moment. I don't collect plushes...just not my thing, but I have to admit that these new ones are really cute...a lot more so than the originals. Kinda boring news about the collector pose rerelease...but at least that's not all they are doing for the 40th. The celestial set is really fun, I'm so excited for all the collectors out there who have dreamed of seeing them released!

Thanks LadyM for sharing the video...it was fun to watch!

Really happy to see this idea and hope they'll actually be released. I didn't care for any of the other 40th anniversary stuff and G5 merch has been a snorefest so these are the only pony products I've been excited for in...quite some time. I hope I can actually get ahold of them here. Kind of annoyed I have to rely on Cracker Barrel to get new ponies.

I believe so, as they are no longer showing up in the internal 'incoming product' listings apparently  >_<
My assumption is that the all-over body printing may have been more difficult than Basic Fun anticipated?

I wonder if they got confused with the celestial project somehow. I'm remembering how the TE ponies and some of the unis and pegs came up as rainbow ponies originally when they scanned...so I think it's possible.

I just scoured through the boards and found the thread where we first heard about the Flower Fantasies:

https://mlparena.com/index.php?topic=402325.msg1865119#msg1865119

Doesn't look like they got mixed up w/ the Celestials since it lists them by name and everything.

I also found this:
https://mlparena.com/index.php?topic=401206.msg1880485;topicseen#msg1880485

So yeah it looks like they're off the table for now, at least. I wonder if they got replaced with the Celestials? They're similar enough (in that they both have all-over prints on their bodies) that I could see them not wanting to do both (or at least not wanting to release them back-to-back).

Sharp eyed peeps at the mlptp, found some of the names for the Celestial Swirls.  Nova, Aurora, and *sigh* Milky Way. There's another name, but it's not fully visible.

G3 Toy Shop - Weston Super Mare

So its My little Pony 40th aniversary and boy are Basic fun going big.....
First up are the OG 6 in gorgeous new displays, with a side window to boot, so if you missed the 35th versions you wont want to miss these, and if you have the 35th's you still dont want to miss these.

And Ok so yes we have known  (forgive us) about the Celestial's for some time, but were sworn to secrecy until today! We have be dying to tell you and the fact we kept stum is a miracle......

These are based on unreleased prototypes from the 80's, and are the first BRAND new G1's released since the end of G1's (we wont talk about G2's..... )

They are absolutely STUNNING in person and we are predicting these to be hugely popular. the design reminds us of TAF ponies without the all over cutie marks. There are more in the set but BF didnt have them on hand. the box design on these is ponies is
SECOND TO NONE! and just just breathtaking

The mini blinds remind us of the Ponies on plynths from the 90's and are so cute and sweet in person!

The TP has some new/stock pics of the retro plushies + new Collector ponies too! I don't think these have been posted here before?
https://www.mlptp.net/index.php?threads/basic-fun-retro-ponies-a-collectors-guide-updated-1-6-23-celestial-ponies-and-40th-anniversary.112268/page-57#post-939726

The Collector ponies seem to have standard symbols here, instead of the ones we saw before that had the big "40" logo on them? wonder what's up with that - hope they haven't scrapped those 40th ann. symbols, they were kinda lame-looking but I did like that they were at least a little different from the previous releases of these six...

The blue Celestial is called Polaris! So they're Nova, Aurora, Milky Way and Polaris.
I love their names but AAAAAAAARGHHHHH the reused name!!! >_<!!!!! There's SO many names they could've used and they managed to pick one that's already been used. Argh, how annoying.

(Although really I don't care what they call them, I'm just so happy to see these four girls go into production at last XD)

Also more pics of the little blind box ponies, yes!! They're SO cute.

It isn't G1 without a recycled name, surely??

I love how the Celestials are top secret, but we've been discussing them for months...:)

Confused by the dig at G2. What has that to do with G1 ponies being released? I don't get it. Oh well. *rolls eyes*

The plush are on Amazon uk as well. At least, Moondancer is...
