Title: Who Hides Their Age Well?
Post by: Colorscapesart on May 24, 2022, 11:29:55 AM
Some ponies stand the test of time better than others.  Which ponies do you think are the best and worst about aging?

My vote for best is Firefly.  She may have glitter rubs, but I've hardly seen any with discoloration, head mismatch, or age spots.

From what's crossed my desk and what's in my collection -

Aside from any wear from play/environment (frizzy hair, pindot, rust) I think most of the year six and up ponies tend to age pretty well if they didn't have some sort of gimmick in their vinyl or hair that could discolor long-term (watercolor baby seaponies, sparkle ponies, sundazzle - etc.)  Hasbro seemed to have the formulas down pretty well by that point.  Even neon colored ponies from that point (Rockin' beat, paradise babies) age better than earlier attempts (poor Party Time just is so inclined to regrind.)

Specific ponies that seem to age well before that... I've never seen an Applejack with some any problem that wasn't caused by more than age.  The baby ponies from year three (including Firefly, Cotton Candy, Glory, etc.) I've seen have always looked lovely... I'm sure there's more I'm not thinking off of the top of my head.

I think out of all the Mountain Boys, Lightning has the least problems.

Considering how old the first 6-pony concave-foot collectors pose set is, I think they seem to do pretty well (I don't have much experience with the flat-footed ones so I won't comment on them).  I've had at least 4 Cotton Candies from that set and they were all basically fine except for some removable dirt and one had a haircut.  I'm not aware of any of that set being prone to regrind or head-body mismatch or age spots, but I could be mistaken.

Also I agree on Princess Tiffany - the surprising part is that she ages well despite having tinsel and being totally white.  But I've had three of her and they were all in pretty good shape.

I agree on Sweet Pop and Dancing Butterflies. Tic Tac Toe is another twinkle who is better. Orange, yellow and green colours don't show yellowing as much. Cherries Jubilee, first set rainbows are often good. NSS Shady, Magic Star, Snowflake etc.
