Title: Virtual Running Club "Rainbow Retro Challenge" - G1 Symbol Pins!
Post by: tailrustedtealeaf on January 04, 2022, 09:19:42 AM
I just got this ad on Instagram.
Virtual Running Club My Little Pony Rainbow Retro Challenge (https://www.virtualrunningclub.com/events/my-little-pony-challenge/)
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Typical "Equestria" despite being G1 themed, yadda yadda, anyway:

The 120 mile challenge has pins themed around the original six.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

While the 600 mile challenge has both year 2 standard and rainbow ponies.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Both challenges have a medal completer:

There's also some shirts and a "tyvek keepsake bib", whatever that is. It's $135 to get the rewards shipped to you as your miles are completed, or $85 to get all the prizes shipped at once. You can enter both challenges, but you need to pay twice. Stuff begins shipping in March.

There is a FAQ on the site which says that the deadline for completing the goal is June 2023. :) I don't do much active stuff, but this is pretty tempting!

So you're supposed to enter and run miles? Then you hafta pay $85 to $135 to get your prized shipped? Am I understanding that correctly?

You have to pay money because you're receiving an actual product. The $135 price is because they have to ship each pin individually, but $85 is because it all ships at once.
I'm used to Disney and indie pin prices, so at $10 per pin, that's $60 for the actual set, and then maybe $15 for the medal. The rest of the money is for shipping.

omg! Ive always wanted to do one of these but with biking instead of running, this is very tempting

It does say you can complete those miles any way you want! ;)

Is anyone else already signed up? I signed up for it, but when I go to log my miles it says I’m part of the space race one instead of MLP . I thought the event started on Jan 1st, but maybe I’m mistaken?

No matter what, I’m excited for this! I’ve been doing these virtual races for a while now, and even though this one is a little pricier than I’m used to, I’m excited for the pony merch! I had to tell myself I only needed ONE shirt haha

Oh huh, this is neat! I assume it's only for US folks though? I'm not a runner myself (wonder if I could talk my brother into it, that's his thing :P) but it's cool to see more G1 stuff. I love the art, especially Butterscotch with freckles omg <33

They do have international shipping!
Quote
A: Yes, we ship all over the world (anywhere that the United States Postal Service ships). There is a higher charge:

For 1 piece of swag (medal or shirt) it is $7.00 for Canada and $11.00 for all other international.
For 2 pieces of swag (medal and shirt) it is $12.50 for Canada and $17.50 for international.

I'll give it a shot. I've never done one of these virtual races before, but it looks cool and the bf and I are trying to do more walks and hikes this year.

That sounds like a fun challenge.  I've never done one of these, though I have thought about it.  I can't really run but I can walk or bike, and I'm about to move to a place right next to a bike path...tempting!  I don't really want the pins or the medal, though, but the t-shirt is cool.

Pretty neat! I am a walker much more than a runner, and I'll be thinking about this as a motivation. I do like that medal.

DUDE! I LOVE THIS! What excellent motivation to get out and make sure doggo gets his walks. And the fact that it goes through 2023 is really nice, so it gives beginners time to build up stamina and really build the habit. I think I'm going to have to do this! Now to figure out where to get a spare $135 because I need my motivation delivered as I complete the tasks and not all at once. If I get the prizes all at the beginning, I'll stop working for them; and all at the end will make the 600 miles impossible to attain.

Edit to add: I just checked my Strava stats and I did 132 miles last year and only walked 45 days out of the whole year. I'm not sure I can do six times more... Maybe I should do the 120 mile to start and can try a 600 mile next year? What would you do?

The FAQ mentions that miles can be double dipped on multiple challenges so I took that to mean both the 120 and 600 can be worked on at once (someone please let me know if I'm reading that wrong!). So I just signed up for both at once.

I'm lying on the 600 mile one, or will at least just have all the pins on hand and award them to myself as I finish it.

I've really been thinking about doing this as I'm still trying to build up my strength from my cancer treatments. And I now have an e-bike to help me get around town without worrying about suddenly tiring out! Maybe I'll have another look...

I saw this ad on FB! I assumed it was like you get a little icon when you complete each stage, I didn't realize you get actual physical prizes!

The funniest thing is that the ad shows a pony vector with the head on backwards. XD Looks like the poor thing fell and snapped her neck. I should have grabbed a screenshot. (I'm guessing they just wanted her looking to the right instead of the left but man they should have edited the vector better LOL)

Well, I signed up for the 600 miles! Rowan (dog) and I did 4 miles in 20 degree F weather today. The sun was out and it was a really pleasant walk. We only saw like five other people!

I'm trying to work out the best way to count my swimming time as mileage. I'm thinking maybe giving myself a half mile or a mile for each time I go to the pool. I don't have a distance tracker or any way to actually track what I do swimming. Plus, swimming is a LOT more physically taxing than walking.

Oh I'm glad to know someone is doing this challenge!  Thanks for sharing your experience!  I didn't sign up for it as I've been very busy transitioning to a new job and moving...but if I can I might sign up later after all that settles down.

I think your swimming calculation sounds reasonable.  I never keep track of how far I actually swim either.  But I agree it seems more taxing than walking!

I'm still waiting for the weather to be a bit nicer. I could count my miles from walking at work, but the point would be to motivate myself outside of work hours...

Wait, you're in Ohio too! I'd love to meet up and do a walk or hike together if you need the extra motivation :D  You can sign up through February 20 to get the keepsake bib and lower priced shirts. You can still sign up after that, but only while supplies last. I'm not sure how many extras they'll print as a lot of it seems to be pre-order/on demand. I skipped the shirt because I couldn't afford $30 for a tank top, but I did get the bib. The challenge runs through June 2023, so that's plenty of time to get it done!

I've also settled on a mile for swimming. My logic is I typically spend a half hour in the pool and I do a mile in 20 minutes walking. Swimming has more rest time in it, so I figure it'll be about the same.

I'm still waiting for the weather to be a bit nicer. I could count my miles from walking at work, but the point would be to motivate myself outside of work hours...

Do the 600 mile challenge and count the work miles! It's still movement and you're doing the work.

I signed up for both but have opted to have all the 600 mile prizes shipped to me at once so I can try to pace myself outside of the alloted time! The 125 one I will have shipped as I go, though.

Has anyone hit a milestone and got their prize yet? I hit the first 100 mile mark on Jan. 28th and have yet to see anything. Since then I’ve hat the 200 mile mark too. I got my shirt a few days ago, so maybe there is some delay and they don’t actually have the pins in hand yet?

I’m trying to decide if I should be irritated or not. I paid extra to have my prizes shipped as I hit those milestones so it’s kind of demoralizing to have hit two marks with nothing to show for it.

The website says pins won't start shipping until March, so you should be good in a few weeks I guess!

I never did sign up for this.  I just don't see myself doing anything with the pins, although I still like the concept.  Maybe I should do my own challenge where I just buy myself a pony every 20 miles or so!

The pins did not ship yet! I haven't hit the first milestone on the 125 mile challenge yet, but I requested to just have the 600 mile pins ship all at once and those have not started moving yet.

I haven't received my running bib yet. But, I'm also sure things weren't supposed tos tart shipping until March.

200 miles ALREADY?! DANG! I'm up to 25 now. Snow and rain and ice here have been making long excursions unsafe. I'm hoping I can get out on the trails more when the weather gets nicer.

WELL idk if it’s cheating but I am logging all of my daily steps each day. I average about 5 miles or so a day, so it adds up pretty quick! To be fair also, this is our “nice” season here in AZ. Come summer it’s going to be MUCH harder for me to keep up that pace! :P

I got my runner's bib in the mail last week! I'm up to 30 miles. It doesn't sound like a lot, but I'm really proud of that considering how awful the weather's been and how icy/muddy/flooded the trails have been.

I've applied for a new job that is 5.2 miles from my house if I take the local Greenway bike trail. Looks like I might become a biker if I get that job! And at 10 miles a day, I'd be gaining mileage fast and finish that challenge much sooner than anticipated.

I just got an email that the 600 mile challenge has shipped since I selected all at once!

It's been cold here so I haven't gotten much walking in, I assume this means the pins are with them and are getting shipped out now all across the board.

I’ve got all of mine, I’ll try and get pics tomorrow! I meant to post a long time ago but I got busy. :P Honestly….I’m a little disappointed in them. They are a lot smaller than I was expecting and they don’t look super high quality. I’m part of another virtual running website and their medals are much higher quality than what I got with this pony race and for frankly a lot cheaper too. I was going to do the shorter race to get the other set of pony pins, but I’m thinking I won’t now.

Disappointed with mine, too. The medal is really nice and the best part of it, but the pins are SO small! Like the length of up to the first knuckle of a finger.

The shirt is nice. It has a shimmer to it.

I didn't participate legitimately. I think I deserve it! At the time I was at a physically demanding job and got a good workout there. Though I do go walk a few miles every now and then when the weather is nice.

I haven't quite hit my first 100 miles yet of the 600 mile challenge... Oops. I finally got my schedule to where I can do a reliable 10 miles a week and then we had a massive heat wave that made it very unsafe to walk my senior dog. And there's no point going without him! The heat broke today (finally) and I'm taking him for a walk as soon as I get the car unloaded from my last market.

Okay ya’ll here’s my full breakdown of the rewards. I’ve compared them to some other prizes I’ve gotten from Yes.Fit which is another virtual running club that I’ve been participating in for years now. I want to be clear this isn’t an advertisement for them or anything, I’m just comparing the quality of their prizes to Virtual Running Club, because frankly for the high price I paid for this race, I’m all around disappointed. I won’t be doing another race with VRC I don’t think.

My first complaint is you have to manually log your miles with VRC. It doesn’t link with a Fitbit. Or at least if it does, I didn’t see where you could do this. Having to manually enter my miles each day was annoying enough that I didn’t really keep up with it, and made the race not as fun.

Here is the whole set of rewards for reference. I didn’t picture the race bib, because I don’t really care about that, or the shirt. But like Ragamuffin said the shirt was pretty good quality, so no complaints there! I also apparently lost one of the pins, so we’re one short here

Next… the pins. Omg these were the biggest disappointment of The Whole package so I’m starting off with them. When I signed up for this I expected the pins to be roughly the size of like, a Disney trading pin. Nope. These are minuscule and hardly readable from a distance. The packaging for them is darling, but that’s not what I was “racing” for. I wish they would have invested less in the card stock the pins came on and more into the pins themselves.

Here is the Moonstone one I got next to two pins from Yes.Fit races. You can see they are much larger and much more detailed. For reference they were about $12 each, so fairly inexpensive too

I’m kind of disappointed with the medal too. This was a good size, and the quality is overall comparable to the other running club, but it still frankly is lacking in detail and pizazz. It’s not something I can picture, but this medal is also significantly lighter weight than my other medals. For transparency, if you select the medal as your prize for Yes.Fit they run around $30-$40 depending on how complex they are.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (https://postimages.org/)

Idk what the technical term for it is…but the color fill in the metal? It’s not like, filled in enough on the pony medal. I tried to show how on my other medal the color goes right up to the metal lines whereas with the pony medal they’re kind of sunken in.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login
 (https://postimages.org/)

Lastly, the medal doesn’t close right. Maybe it’s just a defect with mine but the gap when it’s closed drives me insane.

So in conclusion, although you did get quite a bit in the package, the quality of the prizes is kind of lackluster compared to what I’m used to. That being said though don’t let me ruin the event if you’re still participating! It’s not all about the rewards after all. :) Accomplishing each mile mark is such a good feeling and it is a lot of fun to get a little prize in the mail every time you meet a goal!

Yikes. That is definitely disappointing... :\ I'm sorry they weren't more impressive. Those other two pins you showed, the skull and the butterfly, are VERY nice! And you only paid $12 for those? I buy pins from online artists all the time and a pin of that quality would usually go for like $20, so that's a great deal.

When I started seeing these ads pop up on Facebook for these races I kinda thought it seemed like a sham. Just... I dunno, I never see good things on FB ads. ^^; So I'm sorta surprised people got pins and medals at all! But it's a shame they aren't better quality.

Thank you! Im a sucker for a good pin haha if I had more space that would probably be another collection of mine.

I actually found the other running club through a Facebook ad. I had the exact same concerns as you! I thought it looked fun but I was like ehhh I don’t see how they send you a real medal, there must be something I’m missing. Then I looked at their website and it looked legit but then I was questioning if the medals were very big or good quality? Then I was like, eh, It’s $25 I’ll take a gamble, and I’m so glad I did! I still don’t trust most Facebook ads, but sometimes they are legit. I just do a really careful review of the website and other reviews before I order anything.

I didn’t picture the race bib, because I don’t really care about that

Same, I think I threw mine away. I was kind of expecting more of a plastic or metal plate or card stock rather than the flimsy piece of paper we got.

Idk what the technical term for it is…but the color fill in the metal? It’s not like, filled in enough on the pony medal.

I think the color fill is the enamel and the style of it is "soft enamel." Hard enamel ends up fully filled and smooth over the surface.

Lastly, the medal doesn’t close right. Maybe it’s just a defect with mine but the gap when it’s closed drives me insane.

Mine kind of just randomly pops open so glad to know other people have issues, too.

The shirt is definitely the best prize of the bunch. I wear it all the time.

I'm trying to legitimately work through and I'm closing in on the 200 mile mark! lol

Oof. I haven't even reached my first 100 miles yet due to circumstances beyond my control (losing three weeks to covid, dog getting injured for another week, yet another week of high heat warnings making it unsafe to engage in vigorous activity) and I'm trying to not be too harsh on myself for it. I am fairly disapointed in the quality of the pins. I was hoping they'd be at least the level of artist ones you buy at cons! My plan was to put the race bib, medal, and pins in a shadow box for a cute display in my studio. I may still do that.

Thanks for such a great rundown of the quality and detail! I didn't realize the medal opened and that's super awesome! Too bad it doesn't close all the way and looks kind of warped. Because of the enamel inlay, I'd be afraid to attempt straightening it :(

The other race pins and medals are really awesome. I do enjoy the concept of the challenges and would like to do another next year. I'll look into that other company! Even if they are more expensive, they certainly look to be worth it.
