Title: Ponies you didn't like until you saw them in person?
Post by: Mrs. Prospector on August 11, 2021, 07:03:32 PM
Are there any ponies you saw pictures of online and didn't catch your fancy for whatever reason, but now that you've added them to your collection, you absolutely love?

I remember not really being a fan of Speedy when I first saw her. I didn't like her color scheme, or her symbol, and generally forgot she existed. However, I recently added her to my herd after spotting her at a vintage toy store and I have to say I absolutely love her! She's so vibrant and her hair color combo is so unique and pretty! I'm very happy I was able to get a second look at her.

Same goes for BnG Bouquet. I didn't buy her, because she was $30 and covered in cancer spots, but I was instantly struck by her gorgeous, long bright hair against her slightly off-white body. Before then, I was never particularly struck by any of the first set of Brush n Grows, but I definitely really want a Bouquet if I find one in better condition!

I can't think of any that I outright just didn't like prior to getting them, but I remember being pretty neutral about Wysteria before getting her. I just thought she'd be an average G3 for me but she ended up being one of my favorites. She's stunning in person imo.

Hula Hula needs proper lighting to really show off how wow she is. I didn't like her much until I saw one in good lighting and bought her. And in hand? Ooh she's vivid!

I never cared much for the second set rainbow ponies, but I saw Trickles in person at Crackerbarrel and she looked so lovely and springtime,  with her colors and sparkly copper glitter, that I just had to take her home.

Toola Roola (1) I always thought she was kind of dull, and ignored her. Up until I saw her at the swap meet. What an elegant color scheme she has. She's just a really pretty pony all around.

Somehow, I don't know how, Baby Pink Sunsparkle ended up with the group I bought at the swap meet. Her colors aren't really all that pleasing,  but there's something about her shimmery pink plastic, and her sweet expression that grew on me. I ended up keeping her and now, I really like her.

G2s are weird and unfinished looking.  Kinda moosey muzzled and leggy in an odd way. Taffeta alerted me to Miss Painter, when I was looking for my first, and I nabbed her for a good price. I expected that she would take time to grow on me, but as soon as I opened her up, I really appreciated her bold colors, excited face and cute legs.

I was sort of pushed into buying Curlylocks by my boyfriend, as he was the one buying for me. She's honestly not a pony I ever really considered for her bland colors, and I much preferred Ringlets, Pretty Vision, and Braided Beauty over her. But I'm glad he did, she's so cute, and her pastels and thick, lush, heavy hair are delightful.

I thought Hidden Treasure was boring, and much too pink. Then my daughter got hers. And she's so cute! I finally got one this year.

Thought Honeysuckle was boring. I grabbed a stained one with bad, dry hair for a custom,  and I want one now to have as is.

Oh yes!  G1 Bowtie is a huge one for me.  I really didn't like the look of her in pictures.  Neither I nor any of my friends had her growing up, so I didn't actually see her in person until I got her in an ebay lot a year or so ago.  Other than her pose I love her!  That blue and pink go together so nicely.

Another one is G1 Sweet Stuff.  I felt neutral/meh about her until I got one and was giving her a spa day... then I fell in love, haha.

Twinkle Eye Sky Rocket. I always thought she would be my least favorite of the set. Then she came in a small lot I ordered last year, and she is in such great condition, still very bright, and I realized how cute she is! Same with Curly Locks, I always thought her colors seemed bland, plus she is in one of my least favorite poses. Then I found her for a really good price and I knew I eventually would want the whole set, so I nabbed her. When she arrived I was surprised at how much I liked her...she's so pretty!

Definitely the g1 colourswirl ponies. I ordered Springy a while back and now  I love her.

I think I was put off by their price and the concept. The pose is quite nice however.

I think my general position as a kid was "I wants all the poneez", so I'm not sure if this applied to me. Although I had the opposite feeling with the sundae best, as they looked a lot cooler in the comic than they actually are as toys.

Although in the early days of trading online, back in the dark ages of 1997 and 1998, you often bought ponies or traded for them without a photo. DV had insert drawings...so a lot of ponies I received back then I was seeing for the first time when I actually received them. I remember when we had our trade partner come and we did the big in person trade in 1998, most of the ponies she traded us were ones I had never seen in person even if they had been ponies sold here. So I remember having mixed feelings about the pose of Medley and Firefly, but at the same time being really moved by some of the others.

I also remember she brought Springy along with her too - this one was not on our trade list, she was a gift for the collector's granddaughter who was living in England at the time. And I hadn't really thought much of the colorswirls till then, but I did think she looked beautiful.

Also, Taffeta. Well, Taffeta kind of became my avatar pony by accident, really. Everyone else had taken all the familiar favourites from my childhood, and back then pretty much everyone used pony names online. So I picked on Taffeta as she sounded pretty. I had never seen her in RL till I traded for her, and didn't realise till then that she had rainbow tinsel. :) She's definitely a big favourite still.

Hmm... I guess the closest I got to this experience is with my so soft Wind Whistler. I just really wanted a Wind Whistler and was too impatient to wait for the perfect specimen (nss/deflocked with pink hair) to show up, so I went ahead and got myself a decent looking so soft... and I quite liked her in person. I don't think the so softs photograph well, but they're quite nice to have around.

Probably Tootsie. I'm not too keen on her shade of green. But seeing her in real life certainly changed my mind. I think she's super cute...though it does help she's in a really cute pose!

Beach Ball.  I bought her as a present for my friend.  I had never thought Beach Ball was pretty in photos so she wasn't even on my wishlist at the time.  When I freed her from the mailer I saw how pretty she was and immediately wanted one for myself.  I own a really pretty Beach Ball now.

For me it would be so soft ponies, just as a concept. I always thought from pictures that the flocking would be gross to touch in person, but someone on a local ad site was selling a Shady and I bought her on a whim. I am now in love with so soft ponies, they feel so much nicer than I expected!

Also G3.5 ponies.

It's funny you say Speedy, because that's the one for me. I put off completing my TEs for so long, because I didn't really feel like buying her.
But she's actually quite nice in person, and I really like her now ^^

I feel like this could happen to me with Tootsie as well.  I bet her color combo looks better in real life...maybe it would be an effect of natural lighting?

There tends to be a batch variation on Tootsie's green, so she can be a really nice shade or a slightly dull one. It's a case of nailing the former :)

I feel like Banana Surprise just doesn’t photograph well. I always thought she was ‘meh’ but I jumped to buy the first one I saw in person. She’s really lovely.

It also took me ages to get TE Gingerbread. I disliked that pose for a long time, so that didn’t help. However, when I finally got her I loved her. Her colour combination is just perfect.

I hated TAF Buttons for years but then, suddenly, out of the blue, I loved her and was compelled to buy her. She became a grail for me and now I own her. I was able to get her at a good price due to her having a hair cut

Also, I wasn't bothered about Twist or Taffy either, but now I'm hunting them down!

I hated all Dance ‘n Prance ponies from the moment I was made aware of them.  As a kid, I absolutely detested them.  I thought they were just wrong.  I hated the ugly knobs. I hated the “trashy” accessories.  I hated the entire concept.

Then, as an adult, I went to my first pony meet and saw one actually working in person. It was the funniest thing I ever saw!  The vibrating!  The tail!  HILARIOUS.  From that point on, I was hooked. Now I love them, but they have to be fully functional. Broken ones - nope.  They have to work, and work well.

A similar thing happened with the UK Mummy pony. I had zero interest in that pony for years.  I wasn’t into the whole look of the thing, and I found the giving birth thing just…squicky. However, at one point I was trying to fill in my UK collection holes, and the babies were cute.  Right at that time the Mummy pony’s price was starting to really climb into the $200-$300 range, and had been creeping up for some time.  I happened to see someone had one for trade, excellent condition, fully functional, and with the babies, and I happened to have what she wanted.  I figured I should get it now before the price went up even more, especially since I could get it for no money, just trade items.

So I got it in. I loaded one of the babies and pushed the button.  It shot right out like a fetus missile!   Again, it was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. And again it was love at first sight(of the thing working).

When I initially began collecting vintage MLP, I thought all of the Twinkle Eye Ponies had quite unsettling and weird designs. The entire set of gemstone eyes seemed bizarre and didn't appeal to me, I remember finding red-eyed Galaxy a bit creepy in particular. I'd probably never buy any of them, right?
However, when I saw a $10 eBay listing of G1 Masquerade in good condition (I'll miss those low prices), I couldn't resist purchasing and wanted her for myself. She single-handedly won me over on TE Ponies with her overall interesting design! I loved the striking greenish-blue colors of her hair, and those shiny eyes were really neat up close.

Today, I own seven TE Ponies and want every single one someday, I understand why they're so popular! It's also ironic how Galaxy became my second favorite from the set after I collected her... My top favorite is actually red-eyed Locket, she's even one of the most beloved ponies I have right now. :snicker:

Medley! I'm not a huge fan of green so I didn't think I'd like her but when I finally got her I realized her shades of green are very pleasing!

Cupcake!

After I got Sweetstuff as a kid, I found I really didn't like her pose.  She was the first pony I regretted getting.  So when I got Cupcake in a lot, I assumed that I wouldn't like her either.  But Cupcake is so beautiful! Her hair is such a gorgeous shade and her pink eyes fit so well with her design.  She's so pretty even Sweetstuff grew on me as the pose didn't bother me as much.

Probably g4.5 toys after seeing them in person I got used to them. They aren’t that bad. Also g3 I already owned a few but I only started liking them now when I started to buy more.

The Loyal Subject Ponies. I thought they looked clunky and disproportionate. But I resolved to buy a few to support G1 stuff,  and they're actually fairly cute in person.

SS Shady was probably that pony for me. I wasn't big on the so softs, and also wasn't a fan of the neon hair, but decided to buy her because I saw one in excellent condition for cheap with the original comb. My first instinct when she showed up in the mail (I had even forgotten she was coming) was to pick her up and hug her! I loved her flocking so much! So Softs are tricky to find in good condition but I fell in love with them from that point forward!

At first, I thought Whizzer wasn’t anything special, but when I saw her at a collectibles store, I found her pretty cute. She reminds me of G4 Starlight Glimmer. Even though she’s not in perfect condition, I bought her for $3. She’s not my favorite, but she’s a treasured part of my collection. Another one is Sunlight. Wasn’t such a big fan of her until I found her at that same collectibles store. She was in pretty bad shape yet she cost only $2.  I bought her so I could clean her up as good as possible (because one of my favorite parts of collecting ponies is making them look new again). She has some cancer spots and her tail is completely gone (I’ll give her a new one someday), yet once she was cleaned up and her hair was brushed, I fell in love. Turns out her hair is more complex than I originally thought. Rather than her mane being arranged into a simple rainbow with monotone colors, it actually has hair of separate colors overlapping one another, and it produces a nice effect.

i find the twinkle eyes a bit unsettling too, i don't know if i like the eye gems a lot
however, fizzy is one of my favorite G1 characters, i want to get her but i'm scared i wont like her

Sweetheart Sister ponies. I only got one because she'd been hanging around on a seller's site  for ages and I felt sorry for her so I got one with a pony I wanted and I fell in love. Even now when I look at SHS ponies in web pics I'm meh when I know they aren't in person. Does make it difficult deciding which ones I want next though.

My small G2 collection is due to a cheap add on buy too. G2s are very cheering ponies in person to me, but I don't have the desire to get loads of them. Generally I don't like ponies with open mouths, but I love the laughing look they have. I think you'd have a good night out with a group of G2s.

Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow. I thought they were weird, (they still kinda are) but when I got them in my pack I decided Not to customize them. They're rather cute.

When I was younger I wasn't the biggest fan of the North Star pose, & didn't like Ponies in it at first. I got North Star because her pose was held in her card at a flattering angle, but others I wasn't so keen on. However, the pose grew on me & ponies like Masquerade, Braided Beauty & so on earned their place in my heart & my Ponyworld, bringing Lofty, Sweet Pop & so on with them (the ones we didn't have in the UK).

I also didn't want to judge the G5 Ponies until I had them in hand. I like the brushables, except they're too small, or too big in the case of my big Sunny, to integrate into the main Ponyworld (even the G4 Fashion Styles can integrate well enough). The small ones can kind of fit in with G4, but uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh (sighs). As & of themselves, I think they're quite cute

I go through this over and over with ponies, especially G3. There's just so many, one can get overwhelmed and not be able to focus on them individually until you see a certain picture that really allows you to see that one pony's beauty and then I'm like "I have to have that one!"

Likewise, I've done the opposite, too. I saw one that I thought I really wanted, but when I had it in my hand, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.
