Title: Ponies from Scratch: Has it been done? Will it ever be possible?
Post by: ChibiMango on March 02, 2021, 12:02:53 PM
I kind of wonder if anyone who customizes actual MLPs has tried to make their own 'fakies' of sorts.  As in like, making a brushable pony from scratch without using a bait pony as a base for a custom?

I mean, if obscure bootleg companies can make low quality ponies from scratch en masse, wouldn't it be possible for a person to make at least one higher quality pony from scratch themself?  Plastic casting and 3d printing are both things that are somewhat accessible to normal people, even if full toy companies have better access to it.  And plenty of websites sell premade doll hair.

Imagine how incredible this would be.  If the plastic ends up comparable to actual ponies, it would be great for replacing heads or bodies that are damaged beyond repair.  And even if it isn't, it'd be great for making customs without ruining a potentially salvageable G1 pone.  Hell, you could even make a pony that isn't based on any actual Hasbro-designed generation, and create the ultimate pony design!

Has anyone ever even attempted this before, and if not, do you think it could be possible someday in the future?

Besides, HQG1C..

I've bought some higher quality Takara 3D prints before meant for customizing.

But yeah, usually when I see people doing things like that, they tend to do their own designs. (Think Whisper Fillies, or any sofubi toy)

However.

In the traditional toy sense, One of the biggest costs for toy design is the mold. So it makes little sense to make one of something, because it'll be insanely expensive.

:O That's so cool.
I wonder what they are like, super squishy???

I've always considered making my own toys,  I wonder how hard the process is...

If you’re asking if anyone has sculpted and cast their own MLP style sculpts, I can think of a few people who have who aren’t mentioned above!

I do not know who sculpted the figure in this video about mold making, but it’s an original, hand sculpted, g1 style alicorn and the sculpt is honestly spot on. If the artist happened to be a member of this site and wanted to sell casts of this character, I’d be interested!

I know twinkleeyeslittlegems  https://instagram.com/twinkleeyeslittlegems?igshid=t4fan4o965km (https://instagram.com/twinkleeyeslittlegems?igshid=t4fan4o965km) on Instagram sculpts their own baby sea ponies and sells different versions of them. They look like the teeny tiny ponies, they’re really cute!

it's really good for updates from artists for their WIPs and products, as it consolidates stuff into one page. I prefer artists that just show work (not personal stuff, or very little), and I do the same on mine.

You should be able to view a page or two of their stuff, and get a link for etsy for some 2 out of 3 of the things shared here. :)

HQG1C does the best 'bootleg' G1's!

They have a new sub-section of the forum for them under Customs too :)
