Title: The Weirdest MLP Flaws In Your Collection?
Post by: JanuaryJoy on February 03, 2021, 04:08:11 PM
My Little Ponies are toys that were played with, and many are old toys, so every seasoned collector expects condition flaws. However, there's just some issues (varying in severity) that seem bizarre, unusual, or even kinda funny. I wanted to share a few of my candidates for this topic, and hear from others about their experiences as well!

G1 Birthday Pony is in solid condition, but why are all of the magenta markings bled into her vinyl? The other symbols seem immaculate. This baffles me, although it seems others have this exact flaw from observing online listings.

G1 Twilight is bizarre. Her mane has this rough patch in the middle, and it didn't change at all with flat-iron treatment. Is it melted beyond hope from somebody else's poor style job, maybe...? What am I looking at?

G1 Princess Misty has... What IS this stain? I've never seen anything like it. Why is it just one random foot? It's not even on the bottom, as if she stood on something harmful.

G3 Tropical Delight is discolored, but it's a really odd crusty look isolated to part of her upper body. I don't think it has anything to do with the age of her plastic or exposure to sunlight... It's too different.

Please share any of your interesting or strange MLP flaws, regardless of the generation! If you're confused, adding photos might give somebody the opportunity to answer with a cause and possible solution as well.

My Starlight Glimmer from the All About set has a messed up hoof. Here's a crop of an old photo of her from a couple years ago:

She has some balancing issues as a result.

I haven't got any photos, but my poor Masquerade... out of all the ponies in my collection, she seems to have problems with getting moldy! I cleaned her out thoroughly when I first got her and left her to dry out, but for whatever reason it's happened again--and this isn't even the first time. She's in excellent condition otherwise; it's truly bizarre.

I've got a Toola Roola with the owner's name written directly under her tail. My daughter called it a tramp stamp.

My Seaswirl has a crooked tail hole, and then in the middle, she has the imprint of where another hole tried to go, but failed.

My Tex, whom I've had since I was a kid [but got second hand], has a really... rough back? It's like someone took sandpaper to it, or something? It's nowhere else on his body, only on the spot on his lower back... but it's very strange. There's also a few tiny gouges there. I have NO idea what someone did [and I doubt I could get a decent photograph of it] but? It's always been there. He's very handsome despite this, however, and it means I can tell MY Tex out of a hundred :)

My Wind Whistler has the parting between her forelock and the rest of her mane go right in the middle of one hair plug, which means it needs to be split in half for her to be combed properly, and it's really triggering to me. It kind of helps to just comb the shorter half back with the rest of the plug, although her mane is overall pretty messy and I will have to just take care of it one day anyway.

I see someone mentioned owner's signature, my Heart Throb has one under her hoof but I don't see it as a flaw, to me it's actually an enrichment.

Enough said. I'm hoping to find another Whizzer with that spectacular regrind in the opposite configuration; a bright body/normal head, so I can switch their body parts around and make two ponies without head/body mismatch...I know they exist, because I saw another person post one on here once, but then they never posted again. It's like my holy grail to find that pony!

I'm not sure if the photos will work since Flickr seems to have gotten worse, but these are my favorites.

I have a G4 blind bag Minty with a super misprinted eye and a G1 Twirler with a symbol that was printed super low. Misprints are my absolute favorite and I really want to track down more of them. Someone had a MIB G3 Rainbow Dash years ago that they messaged me about, but I couldn't afford her at the time. I would love to track something like that down again!

I have a Sundance with no symbol.
I am not sure if she ever had one that got removed somehow, or she didn't. It's a bit of a mystery as she's otherwise in great condition, still has her curl, and there's no sign of a symbol on her flank on either side. But...yeah. O.o.

This is a horrible picture that's pixellated but I haven't got a better one right now.

She came from a carboot sale. I kept her because she was odd.

And then there's the "thing" that calls itself hair on the teeny tiny babies from my childhood. ><

I love the Twirler with the symbol down her leg xD.

Even my MOC Whizzer has that head body mismatch issue. I think it's fate.

Ahh, the magical wonder of non-existent or inadequate quality control, it spans across time and defies the boundaries of generations, hahaha! :snicker:

I have a Lyra with a misprinted eye!

(center - ignore Lyra Rays off to the right, she's a Taobao misfit :P)

Also I don't have a pic of this (I don't think it'd even be possible to photograph it) but my Sweetie Drops has a weird... sort of a dent? near the left ear. sort of lumpy and weird? Dunno what happened there, she was like that right off the card.

The blind bag errors are the best. didn't someone once find one with three eyes or something like that? XD

I have one that's a bit of a mystery. My starshine has an extra long forelock. And by that, I mean that she has extra hairholes, filled and glued with hair (that is the same length as the rest of her hair) , going down her face, almost all the way down to her nose. I can only assume that this was a factory error of some sort, and they just went with it and sold her anyway. I mean, I'd certainly be surprised if it turned out a child was somehow responsible xD

(It's a bit hard to see, but it's my only picture of her and all my ponies are in storage at the moment)

My Baby Bow Tie seems to have more plugs down her forehead than the others I've seen so far. Plus she has a forelock, but it seems some have them while others do not.

My Starshine is kind of like that, too; maybe it's not down quite as far towards her nose as yours, but enough that I noticed it back when I got her and thought it was odd. It's definitely past her eyes. I wonder if they are from the same batch!

No pic yet but my Argie Minty over did it with the eyeliner on one side. Thicker on the dark outline around her iris too on that side.

The first one that comes to mind I am lazy and will get a picture if asked but I *just* got out of bed and I'm content to stay here. Anyway. Like, two Christmases ago I was at Ollies and they had boxes and boxes of the Crystal Empire princess pack with Twilight/RD and Cadance/AJ but they were, like, fake looking? The back of the boxes looked like it used a copier to print and the ponies themselves look very fishy. I wasn't gonna buy them but I found a package with Twilight Sparkle who looks like she swallowed a bee! Her nose is inflated. It's so funny.

The one I did get a picture of is this Fluttershy who looks like she's making a ":3" mouth.

The hair on my Streaky pony is discolored and sort of rough and frizzy. The tail feels almost chunky at the very front. It feels sort of weird. Maybe she needs a brushing, but I don't have a pony brush. Gusty is in pretty good condition for her age. She is a little yellow and her symbol is a bit faded, but she is in better condition than Streaky. That is odd since she is older.

I've never heard of discolored hair on Streaky before, do you mean faded? Her mane and tail do have the infamous fading pink. As for the texture, you can fix it! Even if you don't have a pony brush, you could use a clean human comb or something.

I have a tried-tested technique to consider: First, rinse her mane and tail, then lather them in shampoo or conditioner. Once that's settled in, turn your flat iron onto its first or second lowest heat setting (I use a Conair at "5"). While that's warming up, use your brush/comb to section out her mane into small bunches. Finally, pull those through the flat-iron at a brisk pace several times until they appear softer/smoother! You can re-style her curls if desired while her mane and tail are still wet.

I have a fingerpaints with a white patch on her back side. its almost a creamy, neon yellow, and is pressed in in like she got exposed to heat...its really weird. idk if white g3s are prone to that lol

I love oddball ponies. I have a Magic Hat with no symbols at all. Whether this was done intentionally by a previous owner I don't know, but I love her like that. I also have a couple of baby ponies who's manes continue up the backs of an ear. And my SS Lofty has a tail which is so offset from centre it looks like she has a side pony.

Then I have 2 ponies with differently coloured symbols, as in part of the symbol on the one side is a different colour to the other. The shades on the ponies match each other though, even though they are not the same pony. I believe they came in the same set though, which is the type of thing which interests me.

I don't have a huge collection, but the only major flaw I have is my Moondancer has a strange bubble in her vinyl on one of her hooves (I've posted her on here before asking about it and what I should do).

I'm almost positive that her symbols were worn off, personally. I've seen online listings of other Magic Message ponies with very rubbed symbols, destroyed to the point they resembled badly-torn stickers. They're super delicate for non-glittered symbols because of their gimmicky properties, and occasionally, I've seen Magic Message ponies with nearly no traces of their symbols remaining.
