Title: help sealing glitter symbols
Post by: shabbychicdee on December 20, 2020, 07:45:11 PM
hi guys iv just painted my first symbols in ages, the thought of painting symbols gives me anxiety as i don't have a steady hand   so try to avoid it, anyways i wanted it to be glittery so thought sprinkling glitter  on the enamel paint while its still wet it will stick but i think it will rub of in time.
my husband just bought some mod podge for a project, either of us have used it before and i was wondering what would be the best sealer to go over glitter and enamel paint to protect it, would mod podge be ok?
I thought the symbols might be ok but just gave it a bit of a rub the yep the glitter is come of.
would sealer be ok on glitter or ruin it?

pony from HQG1C custom baits on kats site :)

The symbols look gorgeous! :lovey:

You mentioned using enamel paint... is it just the glitter that's coming off, or is the paint still wet? I would've advised against using enamel paint since it's generally suitable for hard plastics but not vinyl - but I've been wrong before. (And I'm not familiar with the HQG1Cs, are they harder than genuine MLPs?)

Anyway, sealing the glitter sounds like a good idea as long as the paint underneath is fully dry. I'd go with gloss polymer varnish, something like Liquitex, Folk Art, or Americana Triple Thick. Mod Podge *may* be fine since you're only sealing the symbols and not the whole pony, but it's not waterproof and it's known to go sticky over time. And if it's the matte variety, it will dull the shine of the glitter, that's why you'll need glossy sealant, whether Mod Podge or something else. :) Good luck!

Following for advice also...I just re-glittered some G1s using watered-down tacky glue underneath the glitter and need to find a way to seal it as well...but also wanted to say how great she looks! Love the symbol you created for her.

aww thanks guys for your comments  :lovey:
i was a little worried i the 2 little stars at the bottom were to close, i tried not to have them too close on the other side but landed up doing the symbols a little bigger by accident.  I'v never been able to get even symbols on both side  -_-

thanks for your advise and the heads up on the mod podge.
Would clear gloss nail varnish work, it doesn't matter if it yellows over time.
HQG1C are more like the new 35th anniversary ponies, little harder then the rubbery early G1's vinyl  and not as hard as the later made in China G1's .
oh and yes just the glitter, the paint underneath has set well ;)
and it was Humbrol model paint I used.

You may want to try a few layers of spray sealant, then go over the symbol with brush on if you want it to be a different finish
