Title: Favorite Playset Pony
Post by: FernMariposa919 on October 20, 2020, 06:09:38 PM
I was just curious...and wanted to see how to make a poll! Remember, you are voting on the pony, not the playset. Even though the Lullaby Nursery is my favorite playset, Tiddly Winks is not my favorite playset pony. I had a tough time choosing between Majesty and Scoops, but went with Majesty because I love the white unicorns with gem-colored hair.

I honestly don't like most of the playset ponies. Cascade is my favorite of those, because her colors are beautiful and her symbol unique. Sadly I know I'll never be able to afford her.

But I also really like three you didn't mention. Baby Cuddles is a very sweet pony. Non blinky eyed Baby Half-Note is also super cute. And so is  Baby Crumpet.

I'm so glad to see Fifi on the list, she's definitely my favorite.  I had her and the Perm Shop set as a kid.  I called her Bowtie for some reason.

Sprinkles and Majesty are close to my heart, and they're both great ponies, but Scoops is just kinda perfect. Great color scheme, TAF, sassy pose. Werk.

I also don't like most of the playset ponies. But I picked Fifi (although Scoops was a close contender). She is kind of boring-looking to me; white body with blue hair was kind of a stale combination, but our Fifi had a dark backstory...she was a respected business owner who had a secret daughter (Baby Dangles) who she kept locked in a cage and made to do child labor in her perm shoppe. So...she was one of our most memorable characters in our (my sister's and my) pony collection.

Random observation about playset ponies: why are most of them so commonly found and priced cheap/not sought after? I would think they'd be rarer, as not everyone had playsets. They were big-ticket items in some cases, so you'd think there would be less of their accompanying ponies floating around. For instance, I had only one friend growing up who had a Dream Castle, but yet Majestys are a dime a dozen nowadays.

OMG! I forgot about Baby Half-Note! I will go and add her! I didn't add Baby Cuddles, because to me, the Buggy isn't a playset...even though Wikipedia has it as such. I guess I think of a play set as an actual set...like a building or place the ponies can go to.

i think the buggy is a playset, baby cuddles would have been my fav baby ;)

as for the others, super hard to pick between lemon drop, peachy and sprinkles.
although i have a peachy army i picked lemon drop, the one i really wanted as a kid, love the colour combo :)
next is sprinkle i had her as a kid and purple was my fav colour as a kid too.

Sprinkles and the Waterfall playset is my favorite! I like how the clouds look so fluffy and it just gives me good vibes!  :enthralled:

Scoops is my favorite. White with purple hair is one of my favorite color combos, and I love ponies with dessert themed symbols.

I'm not big on playset ponies necessarily, but I voted Cascade for being a bit special.

Although my real favourite is the one that never was - Paradise ;)

If the buggies count as playsets, I guess so do the strollers (Baby LD and Baby BT)

Scoops for me! I love her sweet little smile and she was a gift from my mum. Cascade is a close second though! x I love the playset ponies design wise, but it saddens me that so many early ones have the awful flat, thin hair!

I voted Baby Half Note due to the facts 1/ I used to have her & 2/ she had an EPIC introduction in the MLP comics (also featured in the book Favourite Stories).

Her pose is cute, her body more purple than the bog-standard pink, her hair is adorable & I love her ballet theme.

BTW if Baby Cuddles is a set Pony, aren't Tutti Frutti, the US Party Set & the US Slumber set???

Haha now we're really opening a can of worms ;)
Can we add Newborn Twins to that? Considering they came with strollers and such like?

And what about Princess Moondust & Kingsley, Topper, Little Flitter, Puddles and all the other Petites with houses etc?

Baby Half Note did indeed have an epic intro in the UK lore, it's true. One of the more memorable.

I realised looking at the poll that of the ponies actually sold here...I think I voted for one of the only ones neither my sister nor I had as a kid. xD I had Majesty, we both had Tiddly Winks (hers second hand). I had Half Note. She had Sprinkles. I voted Cascade ;)

I remember Scoops from the Ice Cream Wars ep though I never believed she was a real pony until I came online. She seemed like a supporting character they made up xD.

Majesty because she was so badass in the comics. Lemon Drop would probably be a close second because she's cute.

Baby Tiddly Winks because I'm in a baby pony mood.

Thinking about this more, was the pretty parlor ever sold with Snuzzle?  I know I had her as a kid but I don't remember ever having Peachy - but I definitely remember getting the pretty parlor, brand new from a store in the late 80s or very early 90s.  If not, maybe I traded with a friend I guess.

I also voted for Cascade, even if I don't have her (yet). I only owned two playset ponies as a child, Majesty and Peachy. I still have them (but not their playsets) and love them both for sentimental reasons, but strictly speaking from an aesthetical point of view, I prefer Cascade and her cute waterfall.

She wasn't sold with the "Pretty Parlor," but she WAS sold with the "Grooming Parlor," the UK version of the playset. This edition is thought to have been a way to get rid of excess Snuzzles. It predates the version with Kiss Curl (in the US, the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique) and was only a UK thing as far as I know...

My bet would be a trade, but perhaps some store bought and imported excess stock of Snuzzle's Grooming Parlor. Do you remember what the stickers said? That would answer which version you had. If it said "Pretty Parlor," you got Peachy, unless there was some mix-up, but that's highly unlikely.

@MintyMyndi, have you been reading my website? I don't think any other online source includes that much detail on Snuzzle's parlour.

The distribution of Snuzzle's parlour is pretty limited, even here in the UK. I think it unlikely that it would've got to the US as excess stock, because as you say it seems to have been about getting rid of excess stock already. Both parlours and Snuzzles. Snuzzle has a few interesting sale pitches from 1985 to 1987, but they went to some trouble with the tags for the parlour and her sticker. In spite of that it is still basically Peachy's parlour.

To clarify, the blue Grooming Parlour is the Pretty Parlor. Kiss Curl's Grooming Parlour is the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique. The differences come with the ponies and the name tags, not the playset themselves (aside the back sticker, because of the name/etc change).

Grooming Parlour is just the UK name for the playset, rather than a different playset altogether (Peachy's parlour was also the Grooming Parlour here).

You caught me! I love your site, and once every few months I read the whole dang thing the same way I'd binge watch the 1986 series or Tales. I just love seeing your opinions on the ponies, reading tidbits other sites tend to lack, and most of all enjoy the comic facts! Not gonna lie, I've been secretly fangirling every time we've interacted.

Yeah, I figured it was a long shot. If it happened at all, it definitely didn't happen on any considerable scale, maybe just one standalone store, if any. The very first thing I did was check to see where SunPony lived, and despite that not being consistent with Snuzzle's Parlor, my mind refuses to drop connections it finds unless it's proven that it is definitely not what happened. And "never happened" doesn't mean "can't happen." Yeah, I'm stubborn.

The possibility of an accidental Snuzzle with the "Pretty Parlor" outweighs a traveling "Grooming Parlour," but the trade/forgotten Peachy is the most likely. My mom had Baby Cotton Candy and didn't remember her, but she did remember her accessories (mainly the purple playpen and that the BABY necklace was nice to chew on ), so that's something quite likely.

Cookies! <3

Seriously, I'm glad it's of use to you. I am working on revamping it (slowly, in between my other projects), so that it is a bit more intuitive and includes some more stuff like backcards (since I am a bit nuts over those xD).

The thing is that there's not really any logic involved in most G1 pony stuff. So yeah, it's not absolutely impossible. I know people here who bought SS ponies new in stores, but we absolutely didn't have them officially. Just one store in one area imported some of them >< Who knows why. So I guess it can't be 100% ruled out, you're right. It's just such an obscure release even here. But you know. There are still things to be discovered. And maybe there were parlours in the US where they dumped in Snuzzles instead of Peachys but didn't change the box or make a big thing of it. I've never seen a Pretty Parlor box with Snuzzle on it, but that said, I have had Kitchens with all kinds of ponies inside...so...xD Who knows!

...It's funny what people remember. When I first got online trading and was after my childhood ponies MOC, I remember showing my Mum a picture of MOC Windy (my first pony). And she shook her head and said it was wrong. She insisted that it was a long vertical card and not a horizantal one. 2 or 3 years later some UK carded ponies appeared on Ebay and the moment I saw them I KNEW that was what Mum had meant. She'd remembered all the way since 1984 that Windy was on a vertical card, and that's pretty cool. (I was not even 3 when I had Windy, so I'm really happy for her memories!)

Still looking for that MOC Windy though. May have to go raid Leikin's stash ;)

Come to think of it, I don't think my Pretty Parlor came with a pony at all. I never had Peachy. I don't know if someone just forgot to put her in there or what, but I must not have been aware it was supposed to come with a pony, because if I realized I'd been gyped, I would have been quite indignant about it as a kid!

I always grew up thinking Peachy was just one of the original collector ponies.

Okay I think I've solved it - I must have had the brush me beautiful boutique instead of the pretty parlor (they are literally the same, why did they change the name???).  Because I know I had a white cat.  It looks like that version didn't come with a pony at all.  I must have gotten Snuzzle in some other way.

What I remember most about my set was that it was missing the strap for the cat basket, rendering one of the coolest aspects useless.  My mom helped me write a letter to Hasbro asking for a replacement, but all they sent me was some random ribbons and a pony blanket.  I was so put out.

I'm guessing you had the same set as me.  White cat?

Brush me Beautiful Boutique is purple and teal, though. Not white and blue :)

It came with a pony in Europe/UK (Kiss Curl, hence why here it is also under the name Grooming Parlour) but it didn't have a pony in the US/Canada. So it might be that you're remembering, but the colours were different from the original release.

It does have a white cat though. (Catnip in the US, Snowball in the UK)

Nope, the cat was orange. But I did remember though, I think I ordered the parlor through one of those mail orders that came in other pony boxes...maybe that had something to do with why it didn't come with a pony?

That's annoying they didn't send you the strap. I never realized that basket was supposed to be for the cat...I always just thought it was for carrying groceries or something. Why it never occurred to me that ponies eat hay and don't need groceries, I have no idea!

Wow, I guess my mystery was solved but for you the mystery continues!  Yeah, maybe it was because it was the mail order!?  Or maybe at this point Hasbro was just like "throw some stuff in a box with this playset base and hope for the best."  That could explain my missing strap, too, I guess.

It's driving me nuts now! I tried looking it up on the wiki site to see if it showed what the mail order one came with but it didn't.

In all honesty though, it was probably for the best that it didn't come with a pony; my sisters and I pooled our meager funds together to buy it (it was only like $6!), and we probably would have fought over who got to have the pony, haha.

I have some of the US MO inserts.

On the 1985 insert it says the following..

"The PRETTY PARLOR sure gets busy on Saturdays!

Every Saturday, rain or shine, all the Ponies love to go to their Pretty Parlor! It comes complete with ribbons, a brush, floral bouquet, bridle, saddle, hats and a Pony basket! (Pony not included)...only $6 plus 3 horseshoe points."

So there you are.

As a kid I had, from new, Peachy, Majesty & Cascade. (Oh and Confetti in her wedding gown.)

I loved them all but Majesty was a unicorn, a queen and had a castle & dragon! Her playset was my main playset, I followed her stories in the mlp uk comics, so I chose her as my "favourite" even though I loved all of them!  :)

Me too.

If it makes you feel better, I didn't really register that she existed even though she was sold here. She was only out in 1985, she was never in the comics, and I thought as a kid that Sprinkles and the waterfall was the only release. She was in the factfile but I didn't know who she was...along with Minty, Bluebelle, Butterscotch and Snuzzle, who were also obscure non-comic ponies released when I was too small to see them or own them. ;)

I was around and aware at the time they were sold - FWIW I was always puzzled about Snuzzle, a friend of mine had her (somehow) my friend also had Lemondrop & the showstable;

Snuzzle's namecard was in my (Peachy) Parlour set, yet I never saw Snuzzle for sale on her own backcard. In my mind I thought Peachy & Snuzzle were sisters due to sharing similar heart symbols.

I remember seeing the Parlour for sale in the Argos catalogue (I was so excited) and went to town with my babysitter to spend some of my birthday money on this "Argos Special" so maybe, I thought, Snuzzle is the official Parlour pony and that this Peachy version was an Argos-only special release. At least, that's what my childhood mind thought!

Title: Re: Favorite Playset Pony

And then of course in 1987 Hasbro sold the parlour with Snuzzle and made you correct!

Snuzzle was available with Baby Bow Tie's stroller in Argos for a couple of years. No idea what other methods of sale she might've had though. That one always strikes me as odd enough but I only have Argos evidence, nothing from Woolies or any other similar store from that period :/

The one that confused me was Minty, because in the fact file she was purple. When I first found her I was like...erm...what? Who? Where? How?

Cascade showed up at a carboot sale for me without her waterfall but I know I also picked up a bunch of inserts and other pony things in those years so when I saw her on the insert with the waterfall I was like...oh. Okay then. Not Sprinkles? Sister had Sprinkles but no Waterfall as a kid (she was second hand) so that confused me even more.

Then there was someone in a pony comic whose collection photo showed a waterfall, Sprinkles AND Cascade! I assume they bought one, it broke, they bought a replacement and the kid got a new pony out of it but that was also pretty muddling!

I thank you!

But I started doing pony ID stuffs in 1995 when Hasbro sent me their list, and then started trying to figure out all the gaps. I was 13 then :) I'm 38 now. It's burned into me over the last 25 years!

I always loved looking at the photos in the comics, at ponies I didn't have, though. There's one particular photo in comic 200 that I'm sure caught the eye of a lot of kids because it's full of ponies we didn't have here. I remember staring at it a lot as a kid wondering what the heck those stripy ponies were and the ones with sodas.

Ah, I started buying the comics from the very beginning (along with Jem and Care Bears) but my interest faded by the time I passed 100, so I didn't get to see those exotic stripy and soda ponies!

One of the earlier UK MLP comics had a competition (and the prize - I can't remember, perhaps a playset?) the task was to send in a picture of the ponies having a party "a splendiferous affair" if I can remember the wording they used?

I think it needed to involve Majesty or the Dream Castle (again, I cannot remember) but I ended up doing a very detailed picture (it looked a bit like Leonardo da Vinci's  The Last Supper) and liked it so much that I never sent it off

I archived all my comics away but they are *somewhere* in boxes at my folks' house so I cannot check.
