hey guys and gals : ) i bought the ponybride bait for this project a long time ago, and just now got the wind to do it. Still waiting on the hair to arrive, but here's the wip shots so far.

Wow that paintjob is amazing! :heart: Looking forward to the finished custom!

If you don't mind sharing your techniques, what did you use to make the stripes? Masking fluid? The effect is so cool!

thanks :+) and yes, its masking fluid. it was a little resistant to the pony vinyl, so i just made sure to lay it on thick and let it dry completely before painting.

What a great idea!  ! don't think I've ever seen a quagga pony.  She's going to be awesome.  That paint job is so cool and her eyes are so perfectly done O:

Thanks!! :+) I thought ponybrides "ivory" more than white color was the best pick. And she's less...pony shaped I think.

Thank you :+) the eyes were def the hardest part. They took nearly an hour and I think I barely breathed the whole time  :drunk:

thanks!! it actually broke just today while i was touching up the rump LOL...now i gotta wait for a new nib to come in. Its coming from perth i think. I tried to get the hair from somewhere else, but it seems like this fiber im getting is only available in australia right now.

Love the concept and the paintwork is perfect. I need to try masking fluid with airbrushing too. Such a great technique.

im a total paleo junkie :+) just graduated with my degree in anthropology, so this is a good way to celebrate! i think quaagas were so beautiful...

This is such an unusual and cool custom! I've always wondered if masking fluid could be applied to ponies, but never attempted it myself.

I'll be keeping an eye on this! :relaxed:

yeah me too haha! i havent seen anybody use it on ponies before but i had a pretty good hunch it would work. like i mentioned earlier, beware it is a little resistant to the vinyl. so just lay it on thick and let it dry 100% before painting

little update! the hair has come in!! unfortunately i got this far and the needle broke -_- NOW ill have to wait for the needles to come in!

another update! my needles arrived, so i got right to finishing the hair! Here it is fullrooted, and after cut+style! I sorta cut it a little shorter than I meant to..oops. but i'm still happy with it! It really hard to judge just how much is getting cut, its so full!

im still fiddling with it, putting it all in place. I haven't done the tail yet because the rump is still drying with paint. Still gotta do the cutie mark. The last thing to come in are the beads for her hair, and I might put some in the tail too.

Thanks!! This hair came pre-curled. It's "synatra" fiber, afaik only available from Australia. It's really silky and bouncy, and responds really well to heat. The only time it was difficult to root is occasionally when pulling the strands out, the curls get locked together and if you pull too hard, the curl will loose it's shape. Other than that it was the same as any other pony :+)

here's the concept pic again, for a refresher!

display side! her neck peg had some issues, i was putting it in to test the fit and when i pulled it back out the gasket lip thing just ripped right off. oops! so I glued her head permenantly, but there's a bit of a seam showing..i almost went over it with apoxy but i didn't wanna repaint that much....

closeup on her beads. it was hard to find ones that were exactly what i wanted (obviously)...the black one is a tad big for what i imagined, but i think the pattern really fits. the little green and orange ones were a big pain in the tuckus to get on the hairs.

yes i think so too! it was sort of a pain in the butt to order/pay for/root but i think totally worth it.
