Title: Working from Home Thread
Post by: Artemesia's Garden on March 16, 2020, 12:31:15 AM
Hi all :waves: is anyone else already fully set up to work from home? I am and therefore still on full duties during lockdown...

Although we're not on lockdown here as a country I'm  12 weeks pregnant and if I get a fever it may harm the baby.

Update: I decided to tell people at work that I'm pregnant and arrange cover for the watering at work so I don't have to go in. But I'm still feeling pressure to go in rather than lose experiments. In the meantime I'm sat at home and struggling to concentrate...

Update: Now on lockdown

Yep!  But my job is call center based so is the same as if I was in the office.  Have been home for 4 years now.  Jammie pants are the official uniform.

Ah that's good! You've already had a lot of practice :)

I'll have classes online if it counts.
I've done online classes at my community college, but instead of having a set time to meet at (like the case is at my current college) it was very self-driven. I liked this and was hoping it'd be similar, but it's not the case. At least I save travel time, I guess? And it is nice to be able to do something else with my hands during class like embroidery because I am a chronic fidgeter.
I do worry for the server capabilities of Zoom though. I'd imagine schools and businesses would use it for meetings because the screen share functionality isn't very clunky.

I am at home anyway at the moment. I was hoping to be doing articles and applying for academic jobs from next September but much of my academic field has been cancelled - and I was working from home anyway. I go a bit nuts if I'm stuck in this place too long, so I'm not sure how it's going to work out now. I decided against a trip down to London last week because of the risks and don't regret it, but I'm at home with parents.

Both over 70 with health issues, though pretty active and very independent - I'm basically on the same kind of limiting activity as they are. And this is not the climate for writing or sending academic articles (have two done but yeah, can't really focus on it at present) so I'm looking to the garden to be our saviour.

Plenty of DVDs, things to watch. But if utter boredom is the worst we have to deal with, bring it on. Better 4 months of that than excitement at a hospital. I think if you can avoid risk, avoid risk.

Sister is probably working from home now in Oxford. But she does this from time to time anyway, and wants to.

I've worked from home since 2014, so it's not all that different.

I would recommend those of you who work with numbers or numerical data entry and a full keyboard in the office invest in a little number pad peripheral if this is your first extended time stuck to a laptop.

I'm working from home this week too, trying to avoid any unnecessary public transit so I set myself up with full remote access last week. I'm still enjoying the novelty, nice tumble into bed for a 20-minute nap instead of leaving the building to get a cup of coffee...but it's only Day One. Hoping that this shift will spur on my creativity!

friday, we were told it was going to be a test for the servers today. But today we got an email that is mandatory now.

I've wasted all day trying to get my computer to work with their internal scripts to run the programs I need to do my job with no luck. u_u;; I already miss everyone and I'm not social at work.

The kid has to stay home from daycare now too. This is going to be an experience! I'm just grateful I have a job for now. We have a bit of savings if things really get bad. (sigh) I'm not going to be happy if my husband works at home too. T__T; He'll drive me insane.

This is me as of tomorrow was told on Friday that i was getting set up to work from home with a few others. So have spent the day working with IT to sort out equipment and will try from home in the morning.

Looking forward to it but i have the feeling the novelty will soon were off we are a close team at work and some are taking it hard. Others are getting snappy because they want to do it. Though the first batch of us is a test since it has not one been done in our department before and two on this potential scale before.

Though my alarm to get up is now set at 8.45 for starting at 9 instead of 6.10. ...... bet i am up at the normal time though grumble stupid body clock.

Working from home would actually be an idea situation for me, seeing as I can't drive. I kind of dream of having this kind of job right now, TBH.

I've worked entirely from home for the past three years, but I still need to go shopping at least once in a while, that's why I'm considering giving Tesco deliveries a try some time soon.

As of this afternoon they sent us all home to work for the rest of the week.  So it'll be lots of spreadsheets for the time being.  I've never officially worked from home, but I did do lots of my graduate research at home, so I'm not too concerned.  Apparently the CDC just recommended at least the next 15 days for people like me but I'm expecting it to go on longer

I work at a school as a lunch supervisor. Since schools are now closed, and I don’t have to pick up or drop off my sister...let’s just say I have some uninterrupted free time on my hands once chores are done. Means I have a lot more time for my art...perhaps I should finish all those shelves projects...

Great idea. I already have a USB Keyboard with number pad and a mouse. My screen is a bit small but perched on a  pile of books it's saving my neck. Also lucky that we have a proper office chair in the house.

I’m normally work at my local library every Thursday, I didn’t go last Thursday and I’m not going this Thursday. I only help with Rhyme Time. I don’t know when I’m going to go back. I think they might temporarily close the library with all of this going on.

I’ve got both type 1 diabetes (had it since I was three) and thyroid trouble.

Schools are set to close by Wednesday of this week. I'm in an admin building that will remain open, though I am unsure if I will still be at my post of if I'll be sent home to work. Though working from home is a bit difficult when you have no computer nor internet, har har. (Ok, I'd get a chromebook and a wifi hot spot provided...) TBH I'd go bonkers sitting at home.

Welp. Semi-short lived. I think I'm running into the office today to change my password because it's going to expire sometime soon-ish. We can't do that remotely on personal computers... It also gives me an opportunity to grab files I was working on since I was never given that chance. I only take work for 1 day usually. I think the writing on the wall is for businesses to shut down today or tomorrow... so I am fearful I'll get locked out of my computer if I don't do it now.

I did my first virtual meeting yesterday which was weird, but it felt like I wasn't completely away from my team. (videos/pictures spike my anxiety but oh well.)

Oh dear, I gave up for a few days and have taken annual leave until Monday. I just csnt focus at the moment but then I have some other issues going on as well. It's so ingrained in us all to be dutiful, this current situation is so hard because my coping strategies are all messed up and things keep changing. It's really interesting to read what everyone does :)

Working from home too. I got a cold last week, and it's still sort of hovering around and since I have travel an hour by public transport as well, this is all a big no-no.
Fortunately I can do a lot from home. But I have to keep myself from being distracted :P

It has bless him my team leader is doing his best but you can see the pressure he is under to make things work. We are classed as key workers and this time of year is busy normally now this is taking the Micky.

Be fine what do they say keep calm and carry on. Today i am going to try take control of the main team so he can get other stuff done

I (and basically my whole company) have been ordered to work from home a bit more than two weeks ago, shortly after our government has decided to apply restrictions and closed the country down. I hate it. I'm lucky to have a job that can be done from home, and I have already worked part-HO in the previous years (2 days from home, 3 days in the office), which works for me, but I've done full HO in the past, and decided never to do it again. Obviously now I don't have a choice, but I'm really hoping it will be over soon, as I'm starting to heavily miss being able to go out, be out and walk, I also miss people (no, video calls don't help with the aspect I'm missing), part of my privacy (my husband is also working from home, and we're basically in the same room all day), and my claustrophobia is also kicking in (yes, it hits me also in my own home when I can't go out for some time). For now I can mostly keep myself busy, but unfortunately the things I'd like to keep busy with are mostly creative, and if my mind is plagued by claustro-anxiety, the creative part is among the first to shut down, and I either can't do such stuff, or simply don't enjoy them (in which case why would I do them...). I was hoping the extra time I get by not having to get ready and commute to work will let me finish the tons of creative projects I have going on, but instead I more and more often find myself eiter spending the time staring in front of myself like a zombie, or feeling bored, not having the will or the right mindset to do anyting out of the thousands of things I'd normally love to have time for on a normal day  I really need to find a way to keep my head up before the situation gets worse, as I'm pretty sure we have more home office days ahead than what is already behind us :(

I can completely identify with this and I'm also struggling. I think I need to do some gardening or an exercise vid to keep my body going to keep my mind going...

Oh yes, I can relate. I've decided gardening is the best I can do, as I really need the fresh air and in our garden, weeds sprout like - well, weeds.

I still haven't brought myself to exercise on our elliptical trainer though...

I've been working from home since March 11th and it's been great.  I hope I can continue to telework once the pandemic is over because I don't see any sense in sitting in traffic for 40 minutes each way, every day, when I could do the work just as well from home.

Sending virtual hugs to both of you! I hope you can find some peace of mind with the help of nature - it does help me a lot now. Sadly I don't have a garden (I live in the city centre, and normally I love it, as I can sneak away to nature within 30 mins in any direction. With public transport that is - I don't have a car, no use for one here - and that should be avoided now...), but I do have a lot of houseplants, and the number of plants in the flat has just grown significantly in the past week, as a lot of seeds I planted have sprouted! :inlove: I received a bunch of seeds (chili peppers, tomatoes, luffa/loofah) back in February, which (with the exception of the chilies) I plan to rehome in the in-laws' garden - whenever that can happen in the current situation... Right now I am greatly enjoying checking which pots will contain freshly-sprouted babies the next morning, and also observing how the already sprouted ones are growing. They are so cute!

I'm also not very good with exercising... I did manage toget myself to join my company's online yoga classes once a week, but in the current conditions I'd really need more exercise, twice a week at least.

Going back on topic, my company ends its financial year in March, meaning that year-end performance review discussions take place in April. My job involves people management as well, so I'll have to sit down with my direct reports to discuss their yearly performance and the rating they received based on it. As these are rather personal discussions, I was *really* hoping to be able to conduct them in person rather than online - but sadly that wish is not coming true... well, at least I don't have to give out any bad ratings - my peeps are super cool  - so I'm not expecting the discussions to be depressing or negative.

I am NOT a fan of this, AT ALL. I can only see/hear 5 students at a time out of a class of 20. The platform has a chat function and they were unaware that I can translate their comments into English. I do NOT get paid enough to deal with Xenophobic comments from 8 year olds

Yes, but "working from home" with a toddler on the lose is a laugh.  Fortunately he takes a nap but otherwise me and the other mom have to swap and there is always a LOT going on in the background...

I have been working from home since the middle of March, and I'm not a fan.  Sure, not having to dress up for work is great, but work and home should be separate, and I am having a hell of a time staying focused on work while I'm here.
I don't move as much either, and can feel my butt getting bigger as I type...having access to food at any time is NOT helping  >_<
Sending well wishes to everyone, we will get through this!

I've worked from home for years.  The trick for me is to have a schedule and stick to it. I also always get dressed for work and have regular breaks.  The first few months I tried it, I practically burned out.  Goofing off, no schedule, getting depressed, staying in pajamas then coding like mad at night.  It turned into a blurry nightmare and I feel for all the people going through that.

At this time, my husband and brother are here working from home and I'm so used to being alone... they're throwing me off my schedule with their TVs, conference calls and random interruptions.  I kinda hate it.
