Title: Original G1 smells & G1 Retro smells
Post by: freezestime on February 23, 2019, 05:20:50 AM
Hi friends!

I'm wondering if the original ponies were scented, or if that's only a gimick for certain ponies and what smells the retro ponies have?

The original rainbow ponies were not scented...

but these ponies were: http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Category:Sundae_Best_Ponies

ETA: other ponies that people mentioned. ^^; My mind can't remember any other ponies smelling besides the sundae best.. but most ponies were second hand to me.

Also, my brand new, 1980s G1 Cotton Candy did sort of have a scent -
a "new pony" scent  :inlove:
that is a mixture of new plastic and a tiny hint of comforting vanilla, if I can recall correctly! It has been soooo mannnny yeaaaaars...

Interesting, but why are the re-releases scented then? And does anyone know what they're meant to smell like?

Apparently, the re-releases were scented at retailer's requests. They figured it would make the ponies more attractive to potential buyers and children.
I snapped a quick pic of Parasol's box that tells you their intended scents:

Do all of the scents smell like they should? Eh...My favorite scent by far is Moonstone's but she seems like to be the one with the worst discoloration.  :P

The rainbows are a little scary scented.

To be honest, the sets that were originally scented were also quite terrifying. The Sundae Best are the worst offenders. The Candy Canes and Sweetberries were quite potent and sweet, though. For me the Perfume Puffs were the least offensive, but others think differently.

I don't know why they wanted to scent the rainbows, because it's not how we remember them. And there is that 'pony smell' (though I wonder if pony sniffing is a good idea with old deteriorating plastic, seriously ;)) but it's not quite the same.

I've heard Greek ponies are particularly vanillaish in their production scent. I don't have many Greek ponies, and all but one of the ones I have are battered and tlc cases, so I haven't really noticed it.

Yup. Just a gimmick.. probably because other smelly toys are "in" right now..

Interesting, because I was looking into getting a reproduction pony for the sake of it but now, I'm very entrigued and might buy more than just one :P (also thanks for the pic it was helpful)

Back in the day, new ponies smelled like fresh Playdoh and clean sheets. Odd but that's how my brain worked, I had Coco Berry, in fact, she was the last pony I bought in a store. She smelled so bad I had to keep her outside for a week and she still smelled.

Of the retro rainbows, Moonstone smells good sort of like raspberries but it's strong and I have to keep her in my closet (she's unboxed). Inbox Windy sort of smells like dryer sheets (which is just weird) and can't really tell about Sky Dancer.  Starshine stank like cheap laundry detergent and that was boxed so I had to leave her. Won't debox them till I can find the nonscented ones, why retailers did it I have no clue. Especially with it being known some folks are truly allergic to scents.

I tend to be a little sensitive to strong scents, either allergy-wise or when I have a migraine. I like how Windy smells but after having her sit on the end table next to me for a couple hours I started to get a headache. I can’t say 100% that Windy caused it but I moved her anyway.

Most strong scents will annoy me if they stick around too long.  I usually end up with a headache.  I do remember the "new pony smell" of the original unscented ponies.  I loved it.  It reminds me of how new crayon smells bring back old memories.   I don't think any of the new ponies actually smell like that.  But, there is a good chance that smell wasn't good for us in the first place.

The G1 ponies my friend sent me a while ago still have that lovely vanilla-y smell to them despite being so old and clearly in played with condition. Every time I open the cupboard they're in I get a big whiff of vanilla and coconut from Coconut Grove xD

I usually have an issue with scented stuff and am allergic to perfumes and such, but oddly, the retro rainbow ponies scents don't bother me? I could sniff them all day.

Hmm I remember somewhere some one said they kind of remembered their original G1 ponies had a Vanilla scent but I don't think they were Greek ponies.

That one is the worst offender. Of all the ponies Hasbro ever made in G1, her scent is the worst. And it's nuclear. It doesn't even have a half-life. It STAYS.

Coco Berry was the only scented pony in my childhood ponies and she still has a faint smell but smells nothing like ice cream. The advertisement for them states “Ponies that smell like ice cream!” with a little girl smelling her ice cream and her pony. I’m pretty sure my Coco Berry still smells.

This thread reminded me that I need to check my scented Rainbows to see if they’ve discolored. I have Starshine, Windy and Moonstone still MIB. The last time I checked them theyre scents were much fainter then they were when I bought them. Starshine’s is still the strongest.

Coco Berry was my fav. And when I bought her back her scent brought back so many memories... I really like it tho l agree she has a very powerful scent. Strawberry Jam also was mine as kid. She still smells tho I remember that Boysenberry Pie lost hers very fast... And the ones I bought don't have any left.

What are Sundae Best's supposed to smell like? I only know they are "ice cream scented" but I'm thinking they aren't all scented the same? Haven't found any info about their scents anywhere

Are you old enough to remember Clearly Canadian drinks?  The yellow Sundae Best smelled exactly like their blackberry flavored water.  I discovered this because I was drinking a CC and had just found the pony at a flea market.

G1 ponies have a typical smell indeed ! Don't you think, you vintage collectors ?
Sweet plastic scent. A lovely... pony scent !
(But not a proper 'fruit smell - on purpose')

Even now, it happens when you found an old dirty G1 : you wash it carefully and BAM : the smell's back !

I still remember the scent of my Tickle in my childhood. It was a particular smell (I kept on smelling her when playing with) I do hope one day to scent it again! But I do remember, so funny which souvenir we can keep

The G1s smelled great, but they didn't smell like vanilla . . . They smelled like chemicals.  But like, great chemicals. :P

Except the scented ones of course, like the Candy Cane ponies, etc.  But I didn't have any of the scented ones as a kid so I never got to smell them "new".  By the time I got into collecting, most of the scented sets I collected didn't have their scents anymore.

G3s didn't have the good-chemical smell, but they also had some scented ponies.  They were awful.  Thistle Whistle and Citrus Sweetheart were the worst, they made my eyes sting.  Chocolate Chipper smelled TERRIBLE, I don't know what that smell was but it was not cookies OR chocolate.  Butter Pop and the root beer one (blanking on the name) smelled "eh, okay" but their scents wore off extremely quickly.  To be honest I'm thankful.  :P

Most of the scents on the retro Rainbow ponies I find pleasant.  Starshine smells GREAT.  But some of them are a bit chemically or overwhelming.

But it could always have been worse . . .

Yes, and he purposely smells BAD.

Oh yeah, Soda Float.  I still have her, she's very pretty, but her scent is totally gone.  Which is too bad because of all the scented G3s she had my favorite smell.

Coconut Grove was just TOO MUCH for me!!!  Oh I had to put her in the trunk of my car in cat litter for days so I could bring her inside to display without spluttering and choking on her smell.

I haven't noticed a particular scent on most of my G1s, but my Italians have always smelled different. Peachy is a lot stronger than Pinwheel was when I owned her. I'm not sure quite how to describe it, but I love it :D

Coconut Grove is my favorite scented pony. Though I did have
air her out. Never owned that MOTU figure but there was this one scratch n sniff. That was horrible.
