Title: I Caved In...
Post by: Broken Irishwoman on February 17, 2019, 10:37:09 AM
And now there's no way back! :yikes:

So a while ago I posted that I really liked Sylvanian Families, but that they are too expensive for me to collect. Yet somehow (despite costing €25  ) these made it into my house... :lookround:

AND NOW I NEED THEM ALL.  :freak: :whoa: What is it with these? Why are they so incredibly adorable? I also bought a chocolat rabbit baby with the cutest little bed, and I've been drooling over the Sylvanian section at the toystore all afternoon... Anybody else with this problem? :P

Ooh, they're so cute! I've come dangerously close to collecting Sylvanian Families too, as I always liked them as a kid but never had any, then I worked for a few years in a toy warehouse packing orders, and we sold so many of them - animals, playsets, the whole nine yards - it was very difficult to hold off buying some for myself! Maybe just one playset and a couple animals wouldn't hurt... they could be a gift for my younger self - totally a valid excuse!

The Chocolate Bunny family is my daughter's favourite set. They are super cute but - oh - so expensive!!

I started collecting these last year and I'm in love! Luckily the other creatures don't interest me much, I've stuck to cats, with the exception of the pig and chihuahua families. I'm up to 7 families now! And they're coming out with grey persians this year! :whoa:

How I justify the price: you get 4 figures with detailed little clothes for like $15 (in the US at least). G4 MLPs are that much with knotted hair and misprinted eyes! You get a set of two ponies for $14! It's a better deal to get Sylvanians. :P

I had to sell mine a few years back before it turned into a crazy addiction...  I have my red pandas and regular pandas but I chose to keep *just* them.

I remember one of my childhood friends, her parents converted a whole wall of her room just for her collection.

Sylvanians :lovey:
I had a fairly large collection of Sylvanians as a child, I still have my families but gave away most of the furniture while tidying out. I have a few of my favourites on my pony/doll display, and I recently bought one of the new cats to keep them company....and of course some little handmade outfits from Etsy for those who had mislaid their clothing over the years....it's a slippery slope
I feel like they've always been quite good value as they're so well-made and have such attention to detail, they don't feel 'disposable' in the way so many toys are. I do remember that when I was little I could never afford any of the buildings so I was always getting my dad to make me shelving units that could double as blocks of flats (I still have one of those units; ponies live on it now!).
Don't follow the Sylvanian Families Shop, London on Facebook, you will be overwhelmed by cute and parting with more money than you ever expected

CC and SF are a slippery slope.  I walk by them in the store, but I know it's a delightful flocked pit of no return.  So yeah I enjoy from a distance. ;)

:sqs: I got too many of those flocked critters of various brands... considering you can fit a small town's worth in a handbag very easy to get more families than you can honestly keep up with. I had to make up strange surnames like 'the Goldings' (golden-lab/dingo) & 'the Squirrelmunks' to eventually cut back... so good luck. :sqh: :hamster: :fox: :bunny: :frog: :penguin:

Haha thanks for the replies everyone! I'm glad that this is a common problem. :P I am currently eyeballing the supermarket owners, the mouse triplets, the koala family, the hedgehog family, the tuxedo cat family, various rabbit families and lots of little playsets like the fridge, the baby climbing frame, and hundreds of things I haven't even seen yet (I'm already eyeballing everything in advance)...  Long story short: I'm toast. XD

I think that covers it exactly, haha! :silly:

Yes and for every family it seems it's twins plus some new random baby with accessory... in my head I try to explain away this... critters have litters...

So this morning disaster struck. It's payday today, so I went to the toystore... A koala family, two supermarket cats and a fridge happened. :ninja: Did I get a raise today, you ask me? A bonus? Tax return? That would be a big NO. I guess I'll eat next month. Don't worry, I'm not that irresponsible, lol! But it did cost me more than I planned to spend...

This is my collection so far! I'm not keeping them MIB, I'm just waiting for the perfect moment to open them. :P I already opened the fridge; I AM SO IN LOVE. I squealed when I took all the tiny little food items out of the box! No seriously, I just can't believe the loveliness of it all! :hope: :glitter:

I love the cats in calico dresses!  So cute.  There is tiny food in the fridge?  That's adorable.  Congratulations!

Precisely, whatever you are you will have more, unless you are a 'Lil Woodzeez, then you have just two children (not twins) plus whatever kid next hatches out of the neighborhood acorns...

(not looking, not looking, not looking)

And yet somehow I seem to have a couple hanging about in the display cabinet with my ponies - how can that have happened? They are vintage ones though. I refuse to look at the gorgeous cuteness that is the new wave. Yes I do. Definitely.

That's not their permanent location but, I guess I do have a few.  Now they have blindbad babies.  There are a few of them I want but, that's a lot of money for duplicates. So sad.

I think the pink bunny and black cat babies are my favorites.

They are so cute- I loved them as a kid, even the fakies.

I bought a family of rabbits for my son hoping he'd love them.  No such luck.

They have soooo many more now-a-days, the playsets are insanely cute.

You know what's ironic? There's a phone number on all the boxes for customer service, and it says "helpline"... I think it's for Sylvanian addicts. XD

Thank you! :D Yes, all these tiny little items like milk, orange juice, ice cream and ketchup... Eeeee!

And I love the picture you posted! They are all adorable. :D

Congratulations on your collection!

I've always found these adorable, already as a child (those shiny button-eyes and soft flocking! :3 ), and I used to have a few - in fact, I should still do, but they are currently in storage somewhere at my father's. I feel lucky because I don't have the urge to start collecting them. I did buy one or two that I came across in second-hand shops and I particularly loved the animal, like a baby chick and a MIB frog boy (who, as far as I can remember my childhood collection, is actually a duplicate - but who cares if it's frogs <3 ). What I totally adored in this brand already as a child, is that even animals that weren't considered 'cute' under general terms, were available - like frogs! Finding frog toys in the late 1980s and early 1990s wasn't that easy- so frog-lovin' little me was super happy with the Sylvanian frog family. I remember one of them was a gift from an abroad vacation, but I no longer remember which one (I only suspect it was the boy), nor do I remember when and how I got the other members of the family. IIRC, I have the parents, the 2 children, and a baby boy. Now I feel the urge to find them...

Aaaah this is so familiar! I used to have a small Sylvanians collection but parted with them as I didn't have any space and they were just sitting in storage. We've moved to a bigger house since, though, and I decided I could start collecting them with my daughter if she likes them when she is older.

Somehow though, the treehouse, two families and a few baby sets have moved into our spare room. How'd that happen? ;) They're just so cute...

I've always managed to resist these. I think they look beautiful in their boxes and on display in stores but I am not much for animal figures in general so I can admire other people's at a distance without needing to buy. I will admit sometimes I look at the tiny accessories, but I know I'm thinking of them for pony photos rather than anything, so I walk away.

Hamleys have quite an impressive display I think.

Also there were tons of these in Japanese TRU stores. Plus a whole lot of other toys with tiny accessories >< that thankfully I resisted knowing I had to get anything I brought home into my case...

My sister had a few of these as a kid, I think she may still have some of them. I remember a badger I think. I don't know for sure if she kept them. She was more into Carebears, Polly Pocket and ponies.

They do seem to be amazing quality though as toys.

Grabbed a couple with playground accessories to put in daughter's Easter basket.
