Title: Found orange fur!
Post by: Khoufu on October 25, 2018, 02:18:08 PM
I'm trying to find pastel orange fake fur of about 1/2" pile, but it's hard to find more than just standard bright orange fur. I need it for my Proud Heart pattern that I got in the Halloween swap:

Any suggestions for where to look? I usually shop from Mendel's Fabrics and Fabric.com but neither have what I need.

Oh man. My friends and I were trying to find a decent tan fur for a reasonable price with little luck (needed to buy the bolt.. or 2). I can't remember the sites we checked tho :/

If worse comes to worse, could you hand dye the color you need?

I'd suggest dyeing your own as well.  Finding good quality plush fur is like pulling teeth if you want any of the 'unnatural' colours and don't want to order a whole bolt+.

I managed to find ONE person selling light orange but it's  $15 shipping from Ukraine. I've never dyed fur before. Any suggestions?

RIT synthetic dye, probably.  Virtually all the fake furs are non-organic, so you'll need an appropriate dye for them.  I'd buy the fabric first and then get the dye to match.

it looks okay but you would have to buy 1x1,6 meters which can be expensive?
so getting nice white fur might be a better option?

Yay!
I googled peach faux fur and it brought me to one where the length was too long but it suggested that one as a similar item

Also :) I'm really excited to see the end result, so if you remember to, please share!

I'll definitely be sharing on here. :) This is my second plush and my other one was also Butterick so hopefully I'll improve above the already decent quality of my Popple.

I've never actually tried this, but I always wondered if it would be doable to just buy a plush toy and "skin" it, reusing the fur as a coat for a (super so soft) pony. If the hair is too long, you could use a beard trimmer to shorten it?
It could be cheaper than buying actual fur and going through the process of dying it. Good luck with it, keep us informed!

Considering how small the individual pieces of fur are on most plushies, it would only be viable for something the size of a g1 pony or smaller.

I'd have to concur; due to the 3D nature of most stuffed animals, there are a lot of little pieces that go into each body part.  Gussets, seams and darts galore. You'd be better off trying to recycle a blanket or coat.
