Title: Does Acne Cream Not Effect Dolls?
Post by: tailrustedtealeaf on October 19, 2018, 08:45:41 AM
...specifically Monster High.
We all know about the damage it can do on ponies, but I still see this getting thrown around a bunch in doll restoration/customization videos. Particularly this one: where the customizer attempts to remove a stain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-VwR6T8UPs). It's not in the video itself, but it's all over the comment section.
Is the MH community just a bit too young to see any negative effects, or have the negative effects been overstated?

Unfortunately I saw it being recommended as a stain removal method on a forum about Dollfie Dreams and other expensive anime dolls. :(

I could be wrong, but I thought some of the damage to ponies happened years after the application. So I think maybe it's too early to see the negative... maybe?

Unfortunately I saw it being recommended as a stain removal method on a forum about Dollfie Dreams and other expensive anime dolls. :(

The thing about this is that DDs are different plastics, so it might be ok for them. I do believe  I did this with my own DD when I got her-- and that was years ago, and she's fine.
http://www.dollfiedreams.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1887 <-- I mean that's a pretty good resource for DDs.

ETA: I did do it with a DD in early 2015, and no trace of it now.

Thank you I didn't know that.

Different plastics.  You can remove stains on many dolls with it!  I regularly use it on my American Girl dolls when the outfits stain their bodies.

But it is definitely a NO-GO on ponies!

Acne cream is recommended for dolls such as american girl and others, but being that it discolors multi color ponies years after the fact, I would be concerned about it on MH being that they have colored vinyl.

MH haven't been around all too long in the grand scheme of things, so I haven't heard much about discolored dolls yet.  There isn't even much discussion about it on the MH arena, so I wouldn't know for sure.

I've used it on Raven, 2 Hunters and Cupid this summer with no ill effects yet noted but they are human colored not fantasy colored.

I don't use acne cream, I brought this stain remover cream from retrodolls.uk it cost me £11 something. I'm going to try it on one of my pony baits. You have to leave it on for a week or more. It also works on dolls.

Yeah, I would think it would be a problem on the heads. Not maybe so much on other parts of the body. MH use a lot of the same colours as MLP and I would think Abbey and Ghoulia in particular could take a heavy hit if it turned out there are similar problems later down the line.

What we don't know of course is whether there are different ingredients in more modern plastic that makes this less of an issue. G4 isn't really a good comparison, so it might be hard to be sure. (Do we see acne cream issues on g3?)

I would personally not use on anything, since it can be transferred, but I guess if you don't collect anything but a specific type of doll on which it is safe, it's not an issue. Just think it's too early to know with MH.

What is actually in it? If it's benzoyl peroxide then don't use it on a pony.

Doesn't say what's in it, it smells though.

I guess it is just too early for the MH. From what I've felt, the vinyl on their heads do feel especially soft, which lead me to assume that it was dyed vinyl very similar to ponies. We'll just have to see in a few years, then.
I didn't know it was safe to use on AG, that's interesting.

I'd ask the company the ingredients before you put it in a pony. (I'm basically saying this because I'm fairly sure it's benzoyl peroxide)
