Title: Scrumptious Dilemma - Help!
Post by: NightGliderSA on April 17, 2018, 01:51:12 AM
Hello All!

I recently acquired Scrumptious, who I have wanted for some time now. However I have a Dilemma. She is sadly yellowed. And I don't think it is the plastic: it is the glue. But she has the most luxuriously beautiful flocking. Can anything be done? I can't find any reference to sun fading fixing brown glue issues, but maybe I am just not looking in the correct places  :(

Here are some helpful photo's:

Can anyone advise? Please?

I don't know of any way to fix yellowed glue.  :(

I wouldn't deflock though, because her flocking is so thick and nice.  But dang, that is unfortunate.

My daughter's Scrumptious is the same way. Hers is so perfectly yellowed, we thought she was a yellow pony.

Ixnay on deflocking. Maybe a gentle cleaning can brighten her up a bit.

Why do not try to wash her with a product to whiten? Or with toothpaste, it may help??
I do now nothing about this, just it's what I would try

One of the members here (Shy Violet I believe?) has successfully sunfaded So Softs - I’m not sure if it was the adhesive that was yellow though. I intend to try it on some of mine this summer.

Definitely NO to deflocking!!!

Yep, don't deflock her! Her flocking is so thick! I would also advise against using whitening products. Yeah, sure, it could help the glue, but I don't think anybody has any idea if it would damage the flocking.

Iirc, I member here put their Sundance in the back of a cuboard for a couple years and her yellow glue turned white. I don't know if it was the time spent shielded from light, though.

I don't know if sunfading could help but you might want to give it a try.

As SpookyTrees said, this member has attempted and succeeded in sunfading a SS

Thank you everyone!

Just to be absolutely clear: I don't want to deflock my pony at all  :)

I will have a try at sunfading and see where that goes. I'm a bit nervous about trying any chemicals as I don't want to damage her in any way, as you can see she is in very good condition other than that pesky glue. I have already tried washing her gently as the glue is actually patchy, not evenly brown, so looks quite bad in places. Poor pony.

So the plan is to cover her in clingwrap, paint over where her eyes and symbols and mane are and sunfade. She will be my first sunfading project, so if anyone sees a flaw in this plan do speak up!

Try asking Shy Violet about her techniques. Best of luck.

Well, wish me luck with my first sunfading project:

Step 2: Some very cool shades. Or at least that is what I told her.

Oh my goodness I had no idea you could sun-fade a so-soft pony! Truly is one of my favourite ponies, and I have a couple, but they are always so miserably yellow! (I don't think I've ever seen a so-soft in person that isn't, actually). I would love to try this one one of mine!

@NightgliderSA would you post progress pics for us as you go?

Yes, I can do sure  :). But please remember that this is my first time trying this, and I don't know how well it will go. It is her glue that has yellowed: not the plastic. And so it is patchy as well because of that. But we are going to try.

Well, here finally is the update on Scrumptious:

I sewed her hair up in cotton and wrapped her in cellophane so that I could paint over here eyes and symbols without causing any damage. I did make some holes in the cellophane as well, just in case. She was on my windowsill from 22 April until 01 June at which stage I noticed that there was no further change happening. While the plastic has most definitely whitened, that yellowish brown marks of the glue are still very noticeable.

I have taken a photo of her 'best' side and she looks pretty good, though you can still see the marks from the glue I am not going to do anything further. If anyone is interested I can take her out and photograph her in the same spot as before... it has just been ccccccold. Hence the inside photo of her  :)

This is still her factory curl, you can see the glue on her foot though

Wow! She looks fantastic and so soft (fittingly lol)

I don't think the yellow spots detract from her beauty. It's a common thing with So Softs so she can be forgiven :P

Thank you everyone; it was my first try at sunfading as I did not want to deflock a pony with such gorgeous flocking  :)
