My poor mother picked up a Shining Armor with the troll hair and was so upset that she got a pony that someone had ruined the hair. I had to explain to her that was the way it had come originally lol.

Normally rooted. It's about bloody time they started doing it right again.
I wouldn't mind the mohawks if they were only present on ponies with that hairstyle in canon, like Tempest and Soarin'! But I don't like that EVERY boy pony (except Sandbar now?) has them! Big Mac and Shining Armor both have longer hairstyles in the show, and I think their toys would look better if they reflected that. Also, it makes me feel like Hasbro is trying too hard to make clear that "these are BOY ponies! Look, they have short hair!" :-P

I think the problem with Big Mac and Soarin is their canon hairstyle is impossible to achieve without some kind of product to hold it in place. Rooted hair naturally sticks up unless it has enough weight to hold it down. The only 2 options are either a Mohawk or long hair like the girls. Since accurate is impossible I guess they go with the one that reads more as "boy".
I personally don't care as long as it's rooted and not troll hair. Troll hair only belongs on Trolls and Zelfs.
It can be done a bit shorter. Other toy companies have no problem doing it.
I'm not too big on the troll hair, but I like the normal long hair and mohawks.
Not ALL the boys look good with mohawks, but some definitely do. Soarin and my FS Shining armor pull it off well.

That requires effort, money, and planning on Hasbro's part. They don't always like that. :C It seems usually toy companies that do shorter hair like that also style it and put gluey stuff in it to keep it in the style.
Interestingly, I picked up Soarin today, and in the little leaflet that comes with him, Big Mac has long hair! I assume it's an unused prototype, but still thought it was funny.
but even Sandbars hair isn’t what we call traditional rooted hair is it?
isnt it also crimped or glued in a funny shape?
yes but that’s not official.
