Title: What would G1 Cotton Candy's pattern be, if she didn't have spots?
Post by: LadyMoondancer on January 31, 2018, 10:05:10 AM
So here's another "what if" scenario . . . :P

Originally the six collector ponies were slated to have the same 'spot' symbol.  In the Year 1 commercial the prototypes all have spots, and they also have spots on the front of the Year 1 backcard (but not on the back).

(Pic from My Little Wiki (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Snuzzle).)

Then at the last minute (apparently) they gave unique symbols to all the ponies . . . except Cotton Candy, who kept the spots.  Maybe they thought it looked sufficiently like bits of cotton candy?  Who knows.  (Fun fact, it took me three tries to write cotton candy without capitalizing it.  :P )

Aaaaanyway!  If they HAD given Cotton Candy a different symbol, what do you think it would have been?  If Hasbro had asked you to come up with something, what would you have said?

Keeping in mind it doesn't have to match her NAME exactly.  Butterscotch doesn't have candy symbols, Minty doesn't have mint symbols, Blue Belle doesn't have flower symbols . . . ;)

Also, would you have kept her symbol white?  Or made it pink or some other color?

I'd make her mstch G3 Cotton Candy. She'd basically have Lickety Split's symbols, but silhouettes like the other 5.

That would be super cute!

I keep thinking of silhouettes of round, wrapped candies for her.  I don't know why.  :)

Cotton Candy doesn't really mean anything in English (UK English) although I think that most people here understand the term as the same as candyfloss. So in terms of a symbol to match her name, it would be literally cotton and candy, which doesn't make a lot of sense and is as bad as Butterscotch's butterflies.

I quite like the little spots although let's not forget the peruvian baby has bigger puffs (I like to call them blobs, and her blob-baby).

I think in context with her story persona, actually - I'd give her some flowers ;)

Or maybe one of these...

A flower made from candyfloss!

Like G3 CC is the most obvious answer.
But if we were to get creative, maybe some sort of flower? Her backcard story/the comics depict her eating Blossom's/other pony's gardens. Maybe just some cotton?

It may have something to do with originally Bonnie the creator intended for all the ponies to look like 'real' horses. So some of the artwork and ideas may have been started for the ponies. It wasn't until they'd already started the idea that a co-worker (sorry forget names at this point) said they should do them in bright colors. I think I remember Bonnie telling the story and she wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of them being fantasy colors, etc..

Probably a cotton candy cone. It'd gave been nice if their symbols matched their names like their G3 counterparts.

OT but I think mint leaves for Minty would have been cute too.

My theory is that the original ponies were named for their colors when they all had spots and then their symbols where changed after the fact.  That would explain why their symbols don't match their names.

I feel like since Blossom already has flowers that Cotton Candy wouldn't have something too similar.  They all have nature themed symbols so maybe clouds or maybe ladybugs?

A puffy white cloud-like shape, like cotton candy without the cone.

I always thought it was funny that the names didnt match their symbols but now I know why! thanks guys!

Also, I think it's also amusing that there is a pony that has a cotton candy symbol but isnt named cotton candy!

I like the ideas of something natural and flower-patchy to go with Blossom/Minty/Butterscotch... Perhaps some dandelion puff seeds?

Afraid I can still only call her 'Blob-baby' xD.

Ahhh honestly I would keep the spots, haha! They are just so sweet and pretty and I simply can't imagine her without them!
If they HAD to change then I agree with a flower sort of symbol :) Maybe tiny clusters of flowers (three on one stem) so they look different to Blossom's?

I love the dandelion puffs idea.  But, I really like her the way she is.  She’s was an icon in the early days.

Given how simple the year one pony's symbols were/are, I think I'd go with white clouds - clandyfloss/cotton candy looked like fluffy clouds when it's bagged up, so why not? :)
