Title: Alternative Pony Accessories! What Do You Use?
Post by: centaurette on October 13, 2017, 07:34:27 PM
official pony accessories are so expensive (and sometimes, kind of bland)! what other 'unconventional' items do you use as hair accessories, props, etc? i use baby hairclips from the dollar store, LOL! i'd love to hear what other collectors use. i'm not crafty whatsoever, so making anything is out of the question, and i'd like to hear all of your fantastic ideas!

I use all kinds of things, but they all have to adhere to one rule: NO METAL BITS.

I don't really "dress up" my ponies, but when I play with my G4s I like to use playsets that are not from the MLP line! Like a princess castle from my childhood becomes Canterlot, and a Calico Critters schoolhouse is the schoolhouse for the CMC.

I want to start making dresses for my Build-a-Bears! The person who sent me Minty included some bows on her ears, I don't know if that was from BAB or not but they work really well.

I don't accessorize my ponies.  Leaving plastic, metal or just about anything else against them, long term, isn't worth the risk.  You don't know until it's too late.

I normally dont dress up my vinyl ponies but I do that with my Build a Bear ponies :D I use the original BABW stuff (clothes only, I though buy them second hand) and a variety of kids hairclips, baby socks, self made stuff, baby bandanas ... its so much fun :P

I am addicted to buying ribbon for my ponies! Every pony must have a ribbon in their tail, and sometimes in their mane as well. The fabric shop I go to must wonder what I do with all those massive quantities of ribbon I keep buying. I also use little tiny hairclips, and some of my ponies are wearing little necklaces made of pendants threaded onto ribbon. I have a thing for buying bundles of old jewellery in charity shops and dismantling it to make accessories for dolls and ponies.

I like dollhouse accessories from craft shops, Calico Critters accessories, and a Calico Critters knockoff line called Li'l Woodzeez (sold in Target stores in the U.S.).

Ribbons!
~ Plus my kid loves it when I die-cut crowns and tiaras out of glitter-card or mirror-card and balance them on the pony's head  :dance2:

I don't generally keep my ponies dressed long-term but I have a handful of things I use for photos. I won an amazing little set of handmade ponywear (hats, leg warmers, and scarves) a few years ago that I still cherish. Most of the rest is from random toy lines, usually dolls - Barbie, Bratz, Liv, mini Lalaloopsy, Calico Critters, and Cutie Pops come to mind. Sometimes I'll even pull out stuff I've made of polymer clay, though I haven't made anything specifically for ponies yet.

I buy ribbon spools from craft stores or craft sections. They come into my herd and have hair, they must be be-ribboned!

Plastic baby barettes are perfect for sea ponies, babies and g4s.

Bandanas and pieces of cloth are perfect bandanas for my big brothers.

I've been contemplating getting some beads to put in my ponies hair.

Also contemplating getting some material and velcro strips to make leg warmers, blankets and headbands.

My model horses and mlps share brushes.

Ribbons are such a great idea and so simple! I'll have to try that :)

I forgot I also have a bracelet for Strawberry Reef and a necklace I made years ago for Fizzy Pop.

I don't really accessorize my ponies unless it's something they came with (i.e. Big Brother hats/bandannas, etc) but I had to give Diamond Tiara a proper tiara (instead of the sad paper thing she comes with)..

The accessories for the Pinkie Cooper dogs fit G4s perfectly ^_^

(I'm not sure what Silver's pearls are from - they arrived with something else, a G1 baby I think, and I figured I might as well pass them onto her, lol.)

This for me too! The fabric store near me thinks that I am into quilting - I just leave them to it  I was all excited when I went there the other day because they had a whole load of new colours. Pony collecting madness, right?

I have a Magic Hat who has no symbols whatsoever. I bought her like that on purpose because I just love that look on her. She was listed as Magic Star, so Magic Star she is. I made a necklace for her with ribbon and a star pendant. She has that instead of her symbol.

I too adore putting ribbons on my ponies tails.  Some long time ago I found these ribbons that look perfect, I have a rainbow of pastel colors, and they are just the right size and feel to look almost like original G1 ribbons so they really look cute on the ponies.  Yet they are still different enough that I can easily tell my precious few real original ribbons apart from them, so they are perfect.

Every time I go to a craft store I have my eye out for some material that would make good replacement bandanas for my boy ponies, but so far I haven't found any.

I've also toyed with the idea of making jewelry for ponies using ribbons and beads and such.  Maybe even making things like halters and lead ropes and blankets and such, but I haven't yet.  I've made a few beaded necklaces before but I'm not very crafty.  I have lots of ideas for things, but implementing them is the hard part.  XD

Over the summer, Walmart had some fashion rings shaped like crowns for $9. I bought one and used it as a pony crown. I took it off the pony’s head after I took pictures.

You know on ladies tops and dresses there are those ribbons on either armpit, I think it's to make hanging them up more secure? I cut them out and use them as pony ribbons. They are often just the right length and not too wide, and some lovely colours!! Also, there's two the same which works well for mums and babies to match.

I love the G1 princess ribbons, with the metallic edging. So I have about 8 different spools of that at home for my ponies. I do have a few original ribbons, and some similar style but double-sided and much firmer satin ribbons that I also use for ponies that suit that better. Ribbons are just so pretty!

For many years when I was a child, when my bestie and I used to play, the matriarch of the herd had to wear a ring. This stemmed from the fact that we both had Pony Bride. We'd both however, lost the ring, and my matriarch was Ruby Lips anyway, so her Pony Bride (who she referred to as Wedding) and my Ruby Lips (who was Silky Mane) had random plastic rings. I know I have it in with my pony accessories, but she no longer wears it. It was pink, the same colour as that pesky saddle that has stained so very many ponies around the globe, so I have no idea how it managed never stained her over the years!

Sweet story and she looks gorgeous with that bespoke necklace!  :lovey:

I rarely leave anything on my ponies for a long time to avoid dye leaking onto the pony, but occasionally I like to use LPS accessories as props/accessories for photoshoots of G4s. For other generations, I don't currently own anything large enough for them since all of my LPS toys were really small.
