Title: Ponies you thought exsisted but don't
Post by: Ponyfan on September 28, 2017, 07:06:24 PM
When I was very young I thought I saw a Gusty family in the store that included Baby Gusty, adult Gusty and Daddy Gusty. Of course now I know that there's no Daddy Gusty unless someone had commissioned a custom and I guess what I saw was the Apple Delight family but I remember telling my mom I wanted the set with the Daddy and adult Gusty.

Did you ever think a pony existed and then found out that it didn't?

I would have sworn that there was a orange sparkle male pony in a childhood friends collection.   It must have been Sunspot, but I can still picture it so clearly

When I first saw Friendship is Magic, I swore I had a G1 as a child that looked just like Celestia. When I dug up the ponies my mom saved, all I could find was Windy. I'm sure I was just misremebering her, but for a while I felt like I must be missing one.

Paradise :'(

For me it was mostly the other way around as I thought ponies didn't exist (Scoops, Truly, Cupcake) and then it turned out they did xD.

But I did think I once saw a walking pose Sweet Suds in someone else's collection. When she sold her collection, though, she only had the regular Sweet Suds so I guess I got confused...

I could have sworn that a girl I played with when I was 4 had Princess Tiffany in Surprise's pose. I was absolutely sure until I came online and found pony sites. However, the Surprise pose was the only pegasus pose I knew, so it makes sense that I thought she was in that pose, and after all they're not THAT different. Especially when you're 4.

I was also absolutely sure that I saw a black or at least very dark brown pony in a toystore once, I must have been 5. I spent ages trying to find her online, but now I'm pretty sure it was Caramel Crunch I saw. Especially because I get a very strong nostalgic feeling everytime I see a picture of her, even though I've never owned her. I didn't even know her from pamphlets or anything.

Oh, and I thought Baby Sunset was Baby Shady. :P

For me it was mostly the other way around as I thought ponies didn't exist (Scoops, Truly, Cupcake) and then it turned out they did xD.

This too! I had a lot of comics when I was little, and many of the ponies I saw in them were never sold here (or before my time, as I'm from '87). For example, it wasn't before 2007 that I found out that "butterfly ponies" (Wingers) actually existed.

I always wanted a Regular Non So Soft Paradise but even So soft Paradise was never sold in the UK. Baby Sundance was another without beddy-bye eyes and with the Molly like friends. They would have been really cute.

I could have sworn that I saw a set (like the slumber party gift pack) that had a boy pony in it.  He was orange but wasn't Wigwam.

I could have sworn my childhood BBE Baby Heart Throb had winged hearts as her symbol instead of plain hearts.

She didn't. :(

I don't own any of the comics, but I wish I did. I can see how easy it would be to assume some ponies were only created for the comics if you never saw them in stores.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thought I saw a pony that wasn't made.

When I was little I had a friend who I SWORE had a white rainbow baby unicorn with rainbow stars and a blue baby sparkle pony with a bird for a symbol. I've spent years trying to figure out who they were. I still can see them in my mind in her living room!

One day my friend wanted to give me a pony she knew she had but couldn't find it. I asked what she looked like and described her as the size of a G1 looking shyly off in to the distance with a yellow body, orange hair, and butterflies for a symbol. I had no idea who it was, and in high hopes but not quite expecting it, I pictured Butterscotch in the shy pose as a nirvana. She then gave me a G3 McDonald's Rainbow Dash. >_< Little disappointing that the pony didn't exist, but it was still funny

Not so much that these ponies don't exist, but I swear I remember seeing a Tux and Satin box set as a child in stores.  Later as an adult and finding the arena and dream valley, learned I was wrong.  Maybe a memory of the mail order brochures got pasted on top of another memory in my brain.

I'm amazed at how she managed to get every detail of information wrong when describing Rainbow Dash!

For me, I swore Dancing Butterflies wasn't yellow. I can't remember what colour she was 'meant' to be... but I just know it wasn't yellow! I did have a colouring book with her in as a child, so unless I made up colours for her, and they got into my brain as a headcanon, but that's all I can think of... so for me it's wrong-coloured Dancing Butterflies!

This so much! there were so many ponies we didn't get in the Uk I never knew they existed really until I was an adult collector, Molly too. And then there were all those pics of  NSS paradise that was never released with the Paradise estate but it was advertised in the Uk comics *siiigh*   >_<
I remember having stickers of molly and the other molly type dolls with their non pony friends in an MLP sticker set (I must still have that somewhere... either stickers or transfers.. something like that.  I thought they would exist but only molly did (although she didn't here in the UK so I thought she didn't exist either at the time) , not the others.
Oh and then there was .. ugh forgot the name!!  ....the pink pony with white hair and glasses that was the school headmistress pony for the UK pony school  in the UK comics. I thought she existed because the other school ponies did... but nope  . All we got were her glasses with the school play set!!

Human memory is a funny thing! I don't have a pony story, but I distinctly remember watching a movie as a kid, and the ending happened a certain way. Years later as an adult I saw the movie again and the ending was totally different! I did a lot of research online to find if there was an alternate version of the movie, but nope, no one else remembers this ending like I do. It was all in my head. :P

You are  somewhat correct in that that would be party time who came with the birthday set, they are a twinkle eyed pony. Not the same mold, but close to the same color.

i seriously thought there was a moondancer in glorys pose, that is what i thought when i was a kid and saw them in the shops, we only ever had hong kong made ponies here in new zealand so it wasn't the mexican one, it wasn't until i started collecting as an adult i found out she was in a different pose to glory

i could have sworn there was a regular unicorn cheeralie

there is, its a giant styling purple G3 pony with pink hair, i have her ;)

I thought Twilight would have black and white hair, because she looked like she had it in the cartoon. Imagine my disappointment to find out she didn't. Still a lovely girl though,

I used to think Lickety-split and her baby were pale purple. Then I recieved her from my friend and discovered she was very much a pale pink.

These MLP ads from the 80's may explain a LOT of your remembering ponies incorrectly. There are prototypes in here that I never knew existed, including what I think is a baby Sundance without beddy-bye eyes at the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe and a purplish Lickety Split! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEk2aYHff-c

A little off-topic, but the way that girl brushes Curly Locks' hair in the Brush 'n Grow commercial makes me cringe. I suppose that's why we find so many frizzy hair ponies. XD

Molly’s friends and Baby Truly must have gotten pretty far in to the production process before they were cancelled since there are a few pics of them. There is a regular eyed Baby Sundance at the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe. There’s also Blue Sprinkles and in the first commercial all 6 ponies have Cotton Candy’s spots instead of their own unique symbols.

Found Baby Truly prototype on the Wiki.

Hey, look at all the Mimics and Mountain Boys that seem to be popping up at the moment. So you never know...

And how could anyone destroy a pony? I mean, really? Surely some employee took her home for their kid and that kid will one day take that box of stuff to a charity shop because they have boys, not girls, or something and we will find her! (hopehopehope!)

The Baby Truly prototype is interesting for sure! She was shown in the Hasbro pre-toy fair catalog for 1986. From what I've read the catalog was thrown together quickly to deceive Mattel into thinking that Hasbro had dropped their plans to produce the Jem dolls (which were omitted from this catalog). This is why the toys shown in it are in a very early not finalized state. They didn't even have the BBE molds ready to show except for one Baby Heart Throb, which is why Truly is shown as a regular Baby even though she would have belonged in the BBE set.

It's clear Hasbro put a lot of effort into the design of early G1, so for every year there must have been a large amount of scrapped and changed designs/ideas which we will sadly never get to see. What has been leaked is probably only the tip of a giant iceberg.

As for my favorite non-existing pony which I once believed in, it has to be the Finnish BBE Baby Lemon Drop which was listed on Dream Valley back in the late '90s. At the time I had no reason to doubt this information and I tried to search for this pony. At some point it became apparent however that there was no such thing as a BBE Lemon Drop, or any Finnish-exclusive ponies at all for that matter.

Only thing I do remember now was when I was younger I didnt' realize that things in brochures weren't always real... so I swore that the My Little Pony Ice Maker (the windmill one) was real. I kept asking my mom for it but never got it. I can't seem to find a picture right now... but you guys know which one im talking about right? :D

When I was little I had to choose between two ponies at an antique shop: one was one of those pink cabbage patch horses and one was a G1 mlp. Stupid child me chose the cabbage patch one and almost immediately regretted it ever since. The pony I remember was clear and orange and glowed in the dark, it must have been a glow n show. But in my mind it was a unicorn in the posey pose and its mane and tail were completely red and orange so it who knows which one it really was! oh well, better get dazzleglow and happy glow to fix my early childhood regrets.  :P

And people wonder why I call Dream Valley unreliable. The miracle about that screen capture is that that's the improved version of the page, which formerly said that all of these were UK ponies...a myth a lot of people still apparently believe -.-.

Anyhow, going back on topic, I have a list from my notebook compiled in 1998. I'm going to go see if I can find the image again as I posted it before a while back but it is interesting and relevant. It was a list of all the ponies people said existed but hadn't categorised or identified yet. Some of the ponies on the list we now have identified. Some have never surfaced and were probably myths...

I don't know if I believed in them all. But they were in discussion so I noted them down...
Some were ponies I had seen/found at carboot sales myself (Seagull is the nickname I gave german Skydancer because I found one at a carboot sale and she wasn't online at that point). With Bobbie, Sel/Reaperfox was the one who found her first and her name for the pony (Syntax Error) was better, the Bobbie name tag written down in that book was meant to be my personal note because that's what my sister and I called her, I never intended the name to become her official name ;) And I don't remember now why that name, although there was one, and it bugs me all the time ;)

The Argentina/Peru/Brazilian babies belonged to my first trading partner who I met in April 1998 in person and she brought them to show me. That was a long time before any of those ponies were known online.

Here it the list :D

See how many you can spot and how many are fiction (or not yet found ;)

There are painted symbols for Babies Moondancer, Surprise, Glory and Firefly. They're definitely European. Certainly in Scandinavia, Germany and maybe a few other places. But probably not exactly like the prototypes. I've noticed the eyeliner on SS prototypes is mad. I love it. It's so eighties somehow.

I commissioned a custom of that prototype Baby Shady as well. If Hasbro had made her it would have made five year old me really happy, as I had and loved my beautiful movie Shady and really loved reading about her and the baby in the comics. I never understood why the UK set lost babies Lofty and Shady along the way. So I guess add them to the list of those I believed in as a child. Because the comic and fact file said so, and that was all the evidence child me generally needed for ponies existing.
