Title: yarn reroot ponies?
Post by: NsMLPonies on September 21, 2017, 10:51:17 AM
Post pics of your yarn reroots here! I am customizing a few g3's, and would love to see how yarn reroots look. :)

Did someone say yaaaaaaarn?
I *JUST* got into doing puffy yarn hairs, but want a whole series. It does work on G3, in my opinion. But I also like it, to a limited degree, on G1 also. Like, I wouldn't rehair everything this way, but where it fits, it really seems to fit. I think G3 is a good candidate for yarn too, because it can 'liven up' and 'refresh' a character quickly, and the yarn texture really makes it highly different than just say...an alt hair.

Valentines Pinkie:
After I complained 100 times about 'too many pinkies', I had to go and do this. :P on me I guess. She had 100% nasty frizzed up hair at a flea find, but her symbols are all really great. I loved the heart balloons too, she 'felt' different enough to do this, so I picked up on the lavender (her original colors were 3 pinks, I think) from the hearts and went to town with yarn. Also: pearls!

Cottoncandy Cloud:
Nasty discolored Starshine with symbol rust/fading galore & no hair. Her symbol is a pearlescent white cloud but the camera hated it. Soft yarn and bows makes this candy-like. But she's huge now! I always wanted a really cottoncandy themed pony.

Dolly Lickety Split
No hair and pink marker scribble. I wanted a 'old fashion soft doll' look, so she has pompoms, ribbon, buttons and 'soft' accessories for the doll style yarn.

The button was cool because I found a clear button in the street, took it, and nail polished it into a glittering button. She got some extra bows too.

I've got more baits I want to work with too, and am in the process of adding a yarn to one of my army ponies. (I have several armies so...) I would like to see your G3s also when they are finished!

Cotton Candy Cloud is blowing my mind right now. I LOVE HER.

On a side note, I mostly see big puffed up yarn hair for yarn re-roots (and I'm not complaining), but depending on the type of yarn you use, you can use a hair straightener on the lowest setting to get a look similar to the nylon manes :)

Yarn reroots are so fun - there are a few artists who really specialize in them! I've only done one myself.

She's beautiful! Yarn is a great substitute for dolly hair. Only $3.00 for a whole thing of acrylic yarn, and on top of it, the end results are beautiful!

Can you straighten yarn hair with boiling hot water? Or only with a hair straightener?

They're so pretty! Do you just brush the yarn out with a comb when you're done rerooting them?

Yes and no.  You will lose a TON of fibers by brushing it, but that's ok.  There is a lot of back-combing involved, and some of my yarns unravel better than others (you have to unravel before rooting it).  You have to make sure that when combing it you get the fibers from individual strands to blend together.
