Title: Vinegar smell out of a leather wallet?
Post by: Lady Frostbite on July 13, 2017, 12:12:30 PM
So, I have a leather wallet and it was in my bag ... while I was carrying home a box of chips (fries) covered with salt and vinegar. As a result, sadly, my wallet smells of vinegar

The smell doesn't smell too bad sometimes, almost unnoticable, but others I can distinctly detect a sharp whiff. My bag itself can go in the washing machine but that's obviously not the right thing to do to a poor soft leather wallet. What should I do to get rid of the smell? It's pretty dark coloured now with use, so anything that helps clean it up a bit as well would be super helpful!

Notes: It's not raw leather and I don't think it's suede; going on the site where I bought it, it just states that it's leather without detailing the type of leather. It's a lovely soft leather in (WAS) silver grey that's now dark grey XD

I'm sad to hear your wallet has soaked in the smell and is now giving you troubles :/

Maybe you could try putting it in a closed bag with kitty litter and leave it there for some days or weeks (hoping you can substitute the wallet with another one)? Kitty litter is really good at absorbing odour, and is commonly used by collectors to deodorise plastic toys - I haven't tried this with leather before, so I don't know how it would behave with leather, but I don't think it would hurt it. Just make sure the stuff does not actually touch the wallet, because that might cause chemical reactions resulting in discoloration - what I'd do is put some of the kitty litter in a bag, lay a paper towel/tissue/dryer sheet on top to function as a protective layer, lay the wallet on top of this and finally tie a knot on the top of the bag.

This will not resolve the discoloration issue though, hopefully others will have some cleaning tips also for that ^^

Thank you! I just bought some Mr. Sheen Leather wipes, I tried a wipe on the back and MAN it seems to be coming up nice!

Moving this to Off topic for you. :)

Glad to hear the leather wipes seem to be working! As for the smell issue, Loona's kitty litter suggestion sounds worth trying out. Baking soda might work, too.
