Title: Which Ponies Would You Upgrade?
Post by: SkyCakes on June 14, 2017, 08:05:03 AM
I have a few on my list but I always get blindsided by other ponies on my want list. Whoever finds the time? Is a pony with Mold,Age spots,Regrind. What is the deal breaker for you?

None. I don't do "upgrades", if I buy a pony then that's it :) I buy 'em in the condition I like, if they're not available in that condition then I wait to buy. Only exceptions I can think of is if I somehow end up with two of the same pony, I do usually compare them to see which is in better condition, but even then if I've had the first one longer then I'm more likely to keep that - I'm a sentimental sort, haha.

Interesting reply, I usually keep the pony that has not as many problems on their body. I wish I could be more sentimental. Also I look it from a community standpoint. If I can help someone get a nice pony that they may like better than I do Im all for letting the pony go. Or I think I just like to gather the most perfect pony for my herd. Though they do have their flaws. I still have a Bangles with an age spot by her neck. Sometimes the newest one doesn't come along.

well, like I say, I buy them in the condition I prefer anyway, so in the like.. two situations where I've gotten an extra there hasn't been much difference between them anyway, or the extra has been the worse one, so tbh sentimentality doesn't really play much of a part in it anyway, lol.

Sounds like it makes more sense. The best condition is ideal for me.

Honestly, I prefer ponies that aren't in perfect condition. Then I can comb and play with them a little bit without feeling bad ^.^
Not to mention if I'm selling the other pony, I'd like to sell the one that nets the most cash.

I upgrade but I do not replace. In short, I keep the first of any pony I ever get, and then if they are not in very good shape, I will try and get a display version as well. But the original doesn't get booted out.

I have a very battered Truly which I actually have entirely because of who she came from and she gets to be on display because her story is a bit sad (she came from a pony collector whose parents divorced and whose father sold all her ponies after kicking her and her mother out of the house. She wasn't allowed to play with any of her ponies, except Truly, who was obviously well loved. So now Truly stays with us, because she can't stay with her original pony 'Mummy')

I think many battered ponies have stories behind them, and so I don't feel I can part with them. I think sometimes people are way too quick to discard battered ponies and worse, even rip them up or use them for customs when they are not really as terrible as all that. So some of them have a sanctuary here by dint of being our collection "originals".

I am still looking for a really minty Taffy and Twilight SS. I would love the MOC option if it was affordable, but I am satisfied with a good loose one. Even if that happened, though, the original beat up pair came from a precious trade partner who has sadly long since left this earth. So they stay regardless. And I just hope to offer a home to another pony instead of "upgrading".

Of course, this is not great for space...

I think I remember your story about Truly. That is indeed very sad. Stuff like children having hard times hits too close to home being a Mom.
Im still looking for a good Taffy. Mine is deflocked. I lucked out on SS Twilight. I did find one locally that was great. My old one also was deflocked.

If I can't get my hooves on a pony I want, I just transform others into them. Only if they are in the same pose. (With the exception of a few whose poses I can't seem to find).

For example I have  a yellowed Majesty I'm turning her into Ribbon, to go with a Baby Glory who also yellowed into Baby Ribbon.

Hmm.

I, too, tend to keep the first ponies I get my hands on.  However, if a nicer pony falls upon my lap, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth - so to speak.  :D

That said, I probably wouldn't mind an upgrade to my Mainsail, my Tornado and some of my twins.

i have a newborn baby twin with total friz hair.  i know people can rehair but I would (will?) probably upgrade her when/if I decide to resume my newborn twin collecting spree.  :)

I think the ponies that are really difficult to get mint - Bright Eyes & Gingerbread are the ones I would always look to upgrade.

I tend to buy ponies in condition that I'm ok with so no upgrading needed. If I come across doubles from lots or thrifting I tend to keep the nicer condition one. I do get sentimental though so I have a lot of doubles that I can't seem to part with. All my childhood collection stays no matter what and if I acquire someone else's childhood collection (regardless of being a friend or stranger) I like to keep that collection together. We'll see how I feel once I get everyone on display finally. Right now I'm hoarding everything  The only ones I can think to upgrade off the top of my head are my big brothers. I got them from a preschool that closed down and they are in awful shape and I'm not feeling attached to them.

I believed, when I started collecting again, that I would be able to keep just one of each pony. And even tried to buy duplicates from the same seller for resale to help defray the shipping costs, which are high to SA: often far more than the cost of the pony. Needless to say those ponies are all inexplicably still with me. The only ones who are not are those whom I have given to my very dear friend who also collects ponies. Oh dear.

I hear you on the space issue Taffeta, but I suppose we will just have to be inventive?

I do this, too, unless I for some reason feel I can sell the old pony. that rarely happens tho... :silly:

The only ponies I wouldn't replace with better upgrades would be childhood ones / those with sentimental attachment.  Don't have too many since the bulk of my ponies all arrived second-hand.  If I get a better version I've no issues booting out the worse condition of the two.

My G4 Holly Dash has a frizzy tail so I'd get her an upgrade, but she's rare so I should be glad I've got her in any condition!

Hmm the only one I can think of off the top of my head is G2 Junior, he's a bit yellowed.

I normally do try to get ponies in the condition I want them in though. I have quite a few G1s to eventually upgrade but that was because I got them from a cheap large lot. For now though they're just gonna hang tight with me :)

Haha no kidding. My family already refer to my pony cupboard as the tardis, as it houses an impossible number of ponies and yet somehow I keep managing to get in more.

Yeah, it was. A lot of that girl's ponies were sold at a carboot sale (or several, actually, over several months). A lot of them live with us now. Some are all over the world. Several went to my old trade partner whose collection was dispersed after she died, so some of you guys may even have some of her ponies. I hope that they are all in good homes. Most of her ponies were not so much 'hers' because her mum collected and kind of made her collect rather than play with them - but whenever we visited them, she was always carrying around or hugging Truly, so I knew Truly was special. When I knew they were her ponies at the carboot sale, I looked for Truly specifically. She is now the guardian of my So Soft cabinet, standing proud sentry over the room. Here she is on duty, right at the top of the picture :) It's a rare day when I had the cabinet doors open, so she was making sure that nothing untoward went on on her watch ;)

She is a sorry ragged specimen, but I know her story, so she's as precious to me as a mint one could be.

Raggedy Taffy is also in there, being protected from prying eyes by Angel and Skippety Doo by the looks of it...

Not much is a deal breaker for me. I prefer them cheap, lol. I have upgraded, but don't purposefully do so. Generally have gone for bait as I'm just really not that picky.
Title: Re: Which Ponies Would You Upgrade?
Post by: lostpony on June 18, 2017, 02:10:38 PM
Haha yes mlp4me I too like them cheap.  I especially like them flawed because then it's easy to make them a little better, and then I get a better one and keep both...I especially love dollar bait because then i can do anything I want to them and I love them the same.

I got a Gingerbread that was brown in the thinner spots like where the hooves meet the legs, and I like her distinct appearance, and I like to brutalize cancer ponies with fantasies of curing the problem.  I keep "upgrading" the same ponies in that I get a better condition one, but also keep the less good ones, and while I like to give away duplicates to friends who don't have many ponies, I never sell so for the most part, being acquired by me is a till-death-do-us-part pony relationship.  My storage and shed are packed with ponies and soon all the cupboards in my little trailer are being converted to glass-front pony display.  I especially love big ponies like Zilla size and G3 Styling size and need those converted cupboards to have them on display as all the nooks and crannies in here for pony shelves only fit G1 size.

edit: haha I added the missing G to big.  Big ponies, i don't know anything about bi ponies...

I hoard G1s, so if I get an upgrade I usually keep the other one I had... though I may re-hair it or something. I need upgrades for Yum Yum and Nightglider -- I got them both on the cheaper side because they have hair cuts. :( Even before I get upgrades I'm probably going to go ahead and rehair them.

I keep all of my childhood ponies and wouldn't consider selling them unless I were in dire straits; I do own upgrades for most of them because I love nice-condition ponies, but I wouldn't part with my old playmates and so I just keep both.

As far as ponies I've purchased since I started collecting again, however, I usually don't have a problem selling one of them if I get one in nicer condition. I'm just happier keeping the nicer pony and I don't mind letting go of the other one since my emotional attachment to it is not strong. (I would always recommend thinking it through carefully before selling, though, maybe keeping the worse-condition pony around a few months to see if he or she grows on you.)

I'd say my Firefly, um... not much is wrong with her she just has a bit of rust inside her body, that an a pink highlighter mark but highlighter  marks can't be fixed on ponies

Highlighter marks can't be sunfaded?

The rust is easy to deal with, just scrub it out with liquid laundry soap...soak the tail a short while n use toothbrush.

I'm not someone who could upgrade. I'd rather have duplicates of a pony rather than get rid of an old one because of getting a better condition replacement. All of my toys are alive in their own way and for me it would be like giving away one of my pets because a 'prettier' one came along.

I would upgrade any pony I can't fix. I'm on the hunt for a new
G3 Sparkleworks, G3 Citrus Sweetheart, and G1 Windy. But I'm not too picky as a collector and appreciate any pony in any condition.

I'd say my Italian Starshine and Skydancer, but seeing how my Masquerade with horrible frizzy hair that i got in the first g1 lot i ever bought is still here even after i got one in much better condition along with other TEs, i guess i can't part with a pony even if i get one in better condition.

It's good to see I am not alone in hoarding imperfect ponies even after getting a better one.  I love them perfect, I love them ruined, and I'm having a hard time with trades:  i just can't do it even when it makes sense.

Jorgito93 have you tried a curling iron with conditioner on that frizzy Masquerade hair?  Use the lowest heat setting...

When I get a new pony that's completely new to me, like I don't have her already, I put her on display regardless of her condition. Then if I happen to come across the exact same pony in a better condition, I take the old one off of my display shelf and put the new one in her place.

I have yet to really get rid of these ponies who aren't in as good of a condition, I have them sitting in a box. I will probably get rid of them at some point, as it doesn't feel quite right having these things put away with no intention to take them out, when someone else could have them instead and maybe they'd actually display them.

For a couple examples, I got a Heart Throb at the Goodwill mixed in with some other ponies. But the poor little thing has what seems to be bite marks in her head! I assume a dog in a previous house she was in got its paws on her at some point. I had her on display for a little bit, more toward the back so her wounds weren't super noticeable. Eventually I happened upon another Heart Throb at an antique mall who was in a much better condition, and put the old Heart Throb away so the new one's taken her spot.

Another example is I have two of the 25th anniversary releases of Butterscotch. The first one I got had some visible marker spots on her, and I had her on display for years. Then just late last month (or early this month?) I found another at Value Village who didn't have any marks on her, and she's now taken the other one's spot on my shelf.

I don't know if I'd ever intentionally seek out ponies in better condition to ones I own, but if I happen to come across a pony that's a double of one I own and is in a better condition, I do get it and put it on display instead.

Jorgito93, at some point I plan to go back through my first attempts to work on the frizz some more...I've gotten better too.

Make sure to get a curling iron that has adjustable temperature settings.  If you don't have one with low temp settings, you can use liquid laundry soap to control the temperature.  There's a good instructional video on Youtube done by our very own WingsofMasquerade:  https://youtu.be/680nv2_tBrI

Good luck!

Whenever I find an upgrade my previous pony gets sold. I only keep my childhood ponies even when I find upgrades for them. I did accidently sold one and I feel still guilty for that. But with new ponies I buy I don't get sentimental and just keep the best looking. Unless they are variants ;)
