Title: Are Secret Suprise Saddles HTF?
Post by: gabumon on April 22, 2017, 05:57:53 PM
Just found Secret Surprise Pretty Puff at thrift without her saddle.  Is it going to be easy finding it?

I can't speak for anyone or anywhere else, but I have never ever acquired a saddle separate from the pony. Then again, I can only remember finding a saddleless Secret Surprise pony once at the carboot sale. They usually appeared there intact. I imagine the saddles probably get separated from the ponies and into other toy accessories. Depending on how good the condition of your pony, it might be worth looking for a beaten up one which still has her saddle and transplanting it. If I remember right, it is possible to get the saddle off without breaking it.

*nods* Not to discourage you, but a lot of time the ones found sans saddle are used for custom bait. (I can recall one really cool custom where one was turned into a "flower pot" for silk flowers.)

Though that being said, if you wanted to, you could always make her your own, custom, saddle out of clay. :D

Thanks for the info everyone.

I guess you could 3D print one? If you knew how.

Use leather from a wallet or something like that to make a much better saddle...i want to do this but where is the time.

I have a Stardazzle in need of a saddle as well... I've hoped to find someone making reproductions but I don't know if there ever have been. :/

The saddles are far rarer than the ponies, though not as rare as the keys or 'prizes'.  Not only do they come loose, the latch part and (to a lesser extent) socket are breakable, and broken pieces often ended up thrown away, I'd imagine.  Much like broken flutter pony wings.

Yeah, I think I saw a replacement saddle being sold ... maybe once, if ever? It's sort of a fuzzy memory, so it's definitely not something that pops up a lot, unless maybe a collector happens to have purchased one that broke in transit. :( Sadly, it's the kind of part that seems like it would be easily thrown away if it broke off, because it wouldn't be easy to reattach, and it isn't something you can play with on its own.

It seems like it would be easy to make reproductions, but I've never had a full saddle, so I'm not much help there.

It would be awesome if someone could come up with a reproduction or some kind of replacement... I wouldn't care if I had to permanently glue it in place and not be able to open it like the original... anything would be better than an empty hole. XD I suppose I could use her as a pencil holder but that seems kind of demeaning.  :P

I have one or two saddleless ponies. The saddles just seemed to fly off with such force that they often broke off leaving many a poor pony stranded without a back.

.... The 3d printed saddles sounds like a great idea! Now I know what to do for my first 3d printed project. XD

Does anyone find that one particular pony of the 4 to be more often missing her saddle?

maybe we could crowdsource a project to have people take isometric-angled photos of the saddles next to a ruler so we can start thinking about recreating them to scale?   top, front, back, underside.  etc.

wow did I just say that?  :P

I would think it would be easier to make a mold in resin and cast a replica. It looks like they're all the same so as long as there's one original to cast from, then you'd just have to paint it.

I agree here. Either that, or using a 3D scanner on one. ^^;

I've been meaning to get the rearing pose stand so I can recast that but I lose every auction with one I bid on somehow.  Maybe I'll pick up a saddle pony and borrow it's saddle.

There's a lot of nice customs with decorated felt etc used for the saddle.

If someone's going to produce a functional replica make sure to copy the key too, those thing seem to run like $30 by themselves and are always missing when the saddle is gone.

Also what about installation? The hinge piece is usually still in the pony so be sure it's installable before making functional replicas.

I love papercraft and I'm thinking papercraft replacement saddles would be easy! and cheap!
One downside though is I wouldn't want the ink on the paper (or dye in the paper) to leach into the pony when it came in contact.   Does anyone know if that could be prevented if I used some sort of spray on sealant?

I actually made a mold of a stand - haven't had the time to make any! I thought they'd be fun with gears embedded in them. Glitter is always an option too, of course. Hopefully this summer I'll have time. :)

I have yet to see them in the wild saddle or no, I have my childhood one, but her saddle is long gone.

I want some when.you make them. I was planning on making several stands from acrylic discs with a bit of rod of whatever diameter set into them.

I would also be interested if you ever make stands. Or if anyone has come up with good homemade versions that work well enough. I have a couple Truly's that need to stand.

Okay. I'll see what I can do this summer. :)

My husband made me a few wooden stands- they're fancy, but they only have one peg in them. They do the job, though, and he was really proud to be able to make me a pony thing!
