Title: Need furry quadsuit advice.
Post by: tornadoe on April 11, 2017, 10:38:12 AM
Not sure if this belongs here. (Move if needed)

so I saw this video on YouTube about quadsuit.  Basically you get to dress up as a four legged creature and you have arm stilts that make your arms the same length as your legs.

I have never made anything like this and would love some help and advice from members here who have more experience. I don't know who or what I'll  go as yet but I plan to make the stilts very soon so I can get used to them.

There's lots of tutorials on youtube for general fursuiting! /r/fursuit are pretty helpful for quick questions! Here's what I can tell you:

It's a LOT of work.
Stilts! Google "painters stilts" or construction stilts, you don't necessarily have to make a pair!
Be confident in sculpting faces, you will have to if you're using foam.
It's expensive. Like, bonkers expensive. Most people spend in the thousands to have their suits made. Especially quad suits since there is the added step if "get down and now you're a quad"
Measure twice, cut once. Foam and faux fur are the more expensive craft supplies.
Dont buy your fur at Joanne's or Micheals, or any fabric store unless it is of high caliber. Expect to pay $20-25 a yard, and i definitely recommend buying online.
Resin heads are more expensive, but the look incredibly realistic and it can be much easier to breathe in them. Try to decide if you want a "toony" suit or a realistic suit, this will help you make decisions about resin vs. Foam and what kind of fur to use, etc.

Those are kind of the basics I think! I have made a partial before but never a quad suit. Let me know if you have any general fursuiting questions!

You should look around online! I get all my fur from fabric.com I'm pretty sure they ship yo the Uk.they ship to Canada..

I'm sure you could find a UK based fursuit maker who could sell you the findings, the claws/noses/teeth/horns/ what have you.

I'd just Google UK fursuit supplies or something.

They're a great person if you want to commission but don't have any ideas, since they are open year round for artistic liberty commissions, which means they pick what your suit will be of.

mmm yup, I've managed to snag ears and tails from them when they were offered for special.

but they also show in scraps some ideas on how they do their quads such as http://lilleahwest.deviantart.com/art/proper-quadsuit-dummy-283309503 what the dummy needs to be like

Yup, carry on! While fursuits are not my cup of tea, I've got to say those suits are pretty impressive. :whoa:

Best of luck making your own, hope you get a lot of ideas and useful tips!

Fursuiter here. I make and perform in mine.

I love fursuits, but quad suits... well... they're a hard sell for me for many reasons.

Wearing a fullsuit with padding is very taxing, let alone being on all fours!
in 20 minutes I am TOAST inside my costume, and it's a standard digi suit.

As for the making, it requires exceptional skill. What makes or breaks a character is often the silhouette, and they tend to be godawful on the quads.
I only know of about 5 quad suits that look good. (Most made by Beastcub) The rest tend to look very bulky and strange.. and look exactly like a dude hunched over inside. You have to artificially lengthen the neck so it is no longer a mask but more of an armature.

I would definitely start with doing regular fursuits first! There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube to help you.. And you can shoot me a message too if you need :)
