Title: Sundaygirl is getting rid of 50 things - anyone else interested?
Post by: sundaygirl on April 08, 2017, 09:20:23 AM
A couple of years ago I participated in a thread here with the theme "getting rid of 50 things". It is what it sounds like: We clean out our lockers, closets, storehouses etc, and throw away, give away or maybe sell everything we don't need.

To make it easier to keep up the good work, we post here and encourage each other.

My home is in need of a big clean out and I will update this post like an online journal so you can follow my struggle or participate your self.  My only rule is that same things count as one thing, so if I have thrown away 50 newspapers for example, I will list it as one thing, not as 50 (that would be way too easy.)

I started today by cleaning out some of my closets. I am that kind of person always thinking "but this old shirt isn't that bad, I sure can have it sometimes... uhm.. maybe in the woods... like the other ten shirts in laying in the same shelf". Today I was hard on my self and gathered a huge bag that went straight to the nearest charity shop and a smaller bag with clothes in worse condition that will be thrown away. Mission accomplished.

List of things I got rid of
1. Clothes
2. A carpet with permanent stains.
3. An old bag.
4. An old and dirty pillow.
5. A broken key chain.
6. Knitting projects I finally come to terms with could not be saved in any way.
7. A cloth.
8. Things I'm not even sure what it was.
9. Worn out shoes.
10. Two old handbags.
11. A beret not used in five years.
12. Old receipts.
13. Old medicine.

I just spent the last two days having a garage sale with my family and got rid of a bunch of clothes, books, movies, and stuffed animals. I'm such a hoarder at times but this was one of those cases where things just need to go! Everything that didn't sell is either been sold to second hand book stores or donated to goodwill  :)

I'm in the process of giant sorting piles in my entrance porch area, doing just this!  Yard sale maaaaayyyyy  be this Easter Weekend but I am not sure yet.

I know I need to go through clothes, books, stuffed animals, and old toys soon. They're taking up space I could use to house current collections lol.

I need to do this.  I have a bag of clothing sitting in a big bag that I need to sort through.  He moved it to the bedroom so I can't ignore it anymore.

I'm not so sure I could come up with fifty things to get rid of. Old paperwork, sure, and I have a ton of loose recipes to type up, but the rest of the mess is just stuff that needs organizing - ponies and crafting supplies, really.

Heh. Maybe I should start of thread on fifty things I made! Probably not a good idea to start that before classes are done for the summer, though. Besides which, if all fifty things needed to be different, I'd have to buy *more* crafting supplies, and that rather defeats the purpose of organizing! ;)

I shall have to ponder this for a bit. :awake:

Meanwhile, good luck on your Quest! :D

50 things is a big goal! Good luck! We will keep you on track!

I am also in the cleaning out mode, just got rid of all the boxes and packing material that I've saved from shipments I've received and planned to reuse when I started selling on Ebay.  I had to be honest with myself, I'm not going to be selling and shipping ponies any time soon  ^.^

Feels so good!

Great idea!
I'm going to move soon, so everything I own should fit into a big suitcase.
I'm going to do this and count "sending stuff back home to parents" the same way as throwing away.

1. Finished up a container of Lush shower balm and resisted temptation to keep the empty one.
2. Unused, year old teaching material (rubbish)
3. Useless cosmetic products that have been accumulated over the years
4. Some books to keep (sent home)
5. Ponies (sent home) - only have two left here
6. A few clothes (sent home the ones to keep, donated others)
7. Chinese tablecloth plus place mats (sent home)
8. Belts (sent home)
9. Old bank receipts (rubbish)
10. Some children's books (gave to friend's daughter)
11. broken lid of a Tupperware box (rubbish)
12. random paper stuff (rubbish)
13. favorite winter pajamas (sent home)
14. unused tea caddies (sent home)
15. two sweaters I don't wear anymore (donated)

I'll join!

Things That Got Cleaned (one way or another!)

1: The old broken broom from the barn - into the garbage. Replaced with new broom. (Correction. Husband retrieved it from garbage. It will be broken in half and put back out with garbage next garbage day.)
2: 75 MOC Kung Zhu that hasn't sold on ebay, unfortunately. To Value Village tomorrow! - DONE!  Should have seen the guy's eyes when I dropped off MOC toys. :P
3: A box of random stuff to Value Village tomorrow. Mostly Knick Knacks and VHS tapes. - Done!
4: Did spring cleaning in the barn, phase one. Swept out all the old bedding and shavings. (Still to do - vacuuming and washing/disinfecting cages.)
5:Threw away an old grungy pair of oven mitts. Got a new pair out of the closet, still working through wedding gifts we got 10 years ago...

Thank you everyone for support  :) I'm glad that some of you will join in.

Honeycomb: It must be a big challenge to get everything to fit into a suitcase. I know how busy moving can be.

Thunderwing: Good job. You are already ahead of me.  :)

Kazzellin: You don't have to get rid of 50 things. You can set your own goal if you want to.

BTW: I haven't got rid of anything today, but I aim to update my list tomorrow.

Since I can't seem to keep track of anything lately, I think I need a goal list. So I guess the goal I'm setting it to get through the list lol.

1. Old clothes
2. Unplayable DVDs (repair or remove)
3. Boxes in the basement
4. Stuffed Animals
5. Old toys
6. Books
7. Duplicate doll
8. Unnecessary doll accessory boxes
9. Old prescriptions
10. Stored trinkets
11. Duplicate ponies
12. Clean fridge contents
13. Old paperwork - Round 1 is done at least lol

Although honestly I would be pleased to get through even a few of these with my current work schedule.

Duenia: looks like a great goal list!

After a stressful week, I finally got time to continue my cleaning out. I chosed to clean out one of my "horror lockers", you know the kind of locker you try not to open because you fear your stuff will jump out and attack you.  ;) Will update my list in a minute.

How are you other doing?

I got through round 1 of getting rid of old paperwork at least. Pulled out all the bulky doll accessory boxes that were really unnecessary as well. I had 3 doll totes for that collection, after adding the last doll to it I still have about 1/4 of the room left in one instead of them all being jam packed lol.

Planning to take all my unwanted books/games to half price and get a little spending money on Monday.

Reminded me to go through my misc dolls, though I have a much smaller amount ☺

Bekuno: I'm thinking of trying to sell some of my things too, but I'm a bit thorn. A part of me just want to get rid of it to charity real quick, since it's most things I could get like 1-2 dollars for, it doesn't seem worth the fuss. But I will probably try to sell a few easily sold items. Good luck with your selling ☺

I keep on with the closets and have updated my list.

Well half price doesn't pay much, they're a secondhand book chain. But my books are mostly manga and some are popular and I know I'd be better selling them than giving them to goodwill. We've practically filled up our goodwill with donations after clearing out my grandmothers as is!

Count me in! This is something I should have done long ago, so I doubt I'll get around to it anytime soon. But I need to do this. Edit: I have actually started!

List of things I've gotten rid of:

1) old party ware and decorations
2) old phone books and magazines
3) baby clothing hangers
4) 3D puzzles
5) hand made jewelry
6) Halloween candy!
7) old books

There are many things I hope to add to the list soon, but I need to have a yard sale to get rid of them. Also getting things together to sell here or on eBay.

Congrats on the progress you've made.

I'm so on board!  I've already gotten rid of 26 things.  I can't remember them all to list them, but some of them were:

1. Clothes that didn't fit anymore or had holes
2. flower planter that has been lingering empty in the laundry room for a year
3. unused shoelaces

If you are getting rid of old, unused or out of date medications please return them to a pharmacy for proper disposal ^.^ you don't want medication to end up in the environment because of landfills.

Checked into that already. They said sealed plastic bag with used kitty litter or coffee grounds.

I love having a good clear out!!! We've just moved house so I got rid of loads of stuff whilst packing up, and have already started a new bag for the charity shop whilst unpacking. Things we've gotten rid of  include:
1. Fridge/freezer (gave to charity; new house has fridge included in, our housemates have freezer)
2. Microwave (gave to charity; new housemates have)
3. TV (gave to friends; bought new one as have bought one our whole married life of 12 years!)
4. Vacuum (gave to friends; new housemates have)
5. Crockery (gave to charity; had always had secondhand ones so bought a new set from ikea, after missing out on a lovely set from next :( )
6. TV stand (gave to friends; bought nice new one to go with new TV)
7. Chest of drawers (gave to charity; no longer needed)
8. 3 Lampshades (gave to friends; no longer needed)
9. 3 pairs curtains (gave to friends; no longer needed)
10. Lamp (charity shop; unused)
11. Some old work clothes (charity shop)
12. 2 double wardrobes (sold to my sister; no longer needed, gave to my sister as still quite nice condition)
13. Books (charity shop)
14. DVDs (charity shop)

I think some other odds and ends went in the charity shop bags but can't quite remember off the top of my head. There'll be more!!

Yep, that's the way to go. :)

Juliepants: I'm impressed! A move is often a good occasion to do a big clear out.

Thank you! Although some of it was upgraded, but still, sometimes finding the motivation to even do that is difficult. I do hang on to a lot of old tat!! I'm currently putting my ponies back out in their display cabinet, I'm going to try and put some to one side that I don't have a great attachment to to pass onto someone else (mostly to make space for new ones though!!).

I am in the same situation as Honeycomb as I am heading back to the UK from Japan on Wednesday (:() and I have already  had to send a lot of things home - research books etc - to parents because of case space.

Today I have been cleaning the apartment. I have about 100 unneeded carrier bags that are going to recycling tomorrow. I have a half-empty bottle of bath stuff and one of mouthwash which can't really be saved or kept so they will have to go as well tomorrow morning, before the apartment is inspected. I donated my spare laundry stuff to the apartment building laundry room so someone can get use from it when I'm gone (they were using my stuff anyway without permission, so I might as well use that fact...). I've recycled all the maps, paper notes, etc that I don't need any more. Oh, and my shoes from hell that leak and got soaked several times in rainstorms - I threw them out already, no sense in taking them home when I'd just have to throw them out there.

Stuff I have sent home already:
-Research books
-Winter jumpers (several, as they hog case space and it's warm here)
-Pokemon plush
-PSP games
-DVDs

The above of course aren't really getting rid, just relocating, so don't totally count.

At home I know I had a big sort out before I came to Japan and I have about 25 MH dolls, a bunch of MLP stuff and some random stuff to get rid of. I just haven't had an opportunity, being not only in the right city but the right country. But this kind of thread inspires me that when I get a chance to be home for some days together, I do something about that. Including getting rid of the faded and incomplete Paradise Estate that is taking up space in Dad's shed. (It is not in good shape, and there isn't much point in trying to sell it, or donate it, but I feel I can't throw it out, so I don't know what to do with it >< advice please)

Last summer I got rid of a lot of stuff, at carbooting and online and the summer before we cleared five boxes from the attic. But somehow stuff keeps appearing...

I don't think I have 50 things to get rid of, but I wanted to pop in and suggest people donate things to local homeless shelters if possible! "Obvious" things like clothing, blankets, and unused toiletries are always nice, but some will accept all sorts of things that can help their residents. The one we donate to is for women & children so we can donate things like toys, books/magazines, Halloween costumes, and even furniture. Its a great way to help your community.

You all inspired me!

I've got rid of some clothes that I don't wear, don't fit or are worn out. I also cleared out my bathroom undersink cupboard.

It's not 50 things, but a start.
