Title: Honeysuckle variant?
Post by: Bakuphoon on April 05, 2017, 04:19:52 PM
So I got two Honeysuckles in an ebay lot a while back. While they're the same pose, the molds used are clearly different. Is this a known thing with fluttery ponies? I tried googling for info but I couldn't find anything. Here are pics of them:

As you can see there's different amounts of hair for the tail, and one is placed higher than the other. They eye design is different, and it seems like one of symbols is rotated? And it seems like it may be a slightly different color but that could be due to fading or damage. These gals were not in very good shape when I got them lol.

It looks like one may be a fat head!

I think there's a big head and little head version of each flutter. Is one of them marked Hong Kong and one China?

That's interesting. The one on the right has a front leg that isn't stuck out as far

The known variations are usually called big and small head, since thats the most obvious difference, but yep, their legs are a little different, too. One looks stretched out compared to the other, if I remember right? Like, the mold wasn't quite right and the legs had to be given a tug to make them long enough, or something. :)

I think theres also open and closed spots for the wing tabs, but thats seperate from the 2 bodystyles.

Yeah, like they said ^, there's a big-headed version and small-headed version of at least some flutters (Honeysuckle and Rosedust for sure, and I think the others in their set). I'm not sure why this is, but my theory for Rosedust is that her head was too heavy and made her fall over so they fixed the mold. (I think the same thing happened with the original flat-foot ponies, too; later iterations got concave hooves to help them stand and slightly higher heads.) But who knows why. Only Hasbro in their wisdom ^.^

I think all flutters are made in china regardless of their head size.

There are definitely known differences in wing fixings for some first set ponies - Honeysuckle is one who has both first year and second year wing sockets and she can also come in either straight hair or curly hair versions. As well as having a fat head and a not fat head version.

For straight/curly/first year/second year socket images. But I am not aware of the 2nd set fixings coming up on fat head ponies. I think the theory that it was an amended mould is a good one.

There are quite a few regular variations. I don't tend to find the fat head ponies come up in the UK though - does anyone know if they've been found in Europe because when they come into discussion they mostly seem to show up Stateside...which would make sense if it was an early mould that got corrected.

It's super cool you wound up with both versions in the same lot! Fun to see them side by side.

Yep, it's the big head / little head difference. :)  All the original six flutter ponies have big / little head variations, and I think the second set do as well (but I'm not positive).

It's a lot more noticeable on Honeysuckle's mold than on Lily's mold, because the legs stretch out so much on the one mold.
