Title: No pony left behind
Post by: dragonfly on March 29, 2017, 06:52:53 PM
Which type (who am I kidding - types :D) of pony can you never leave behind if you find at a boot sale, secondhand shop etc?

I used to never leave any behind. In recent years, I will never leave a G1, even baits, or good condition G3.

I will leave one-eyes G2s, duplicates of any gen besides G1, McDonald's ponies, fakies and bait G3s. G4s depends on my mood.

I can't leave G1 behind.  Usually G2 as well, unless they're asking a ridiculous price for them.  Any G4s I don't have will be picked up too.

I really only leave behind mcdonald's ponies, I'll take anything else because at the very least I can make it into a custom. I have a few bait ready ponies I keep in my closet that I've collected from goodwill.

g1s. i always grab them, no matter the condition, even if i dont want them. Id much rather have them safe and sound on my shelf than in the mouth of a toddler or something. Many of my baby ponies have come into my collection this way, i dont want nearly any of them- but i grab them anyway! i got a mail order ember this way...i didnt even realize it was her i just grabbed it and ran.

i leave many g3s behind, and i will almost never take home a g4. ive yet to see a g2 in the wild, but i would likely not pass it up.

I wouldn't be able to leave any pony behind that is on my want list, or I might of owned as a child... or some of the later year ponies like Sweetheart sisters, teeny tinies, etc.

I can leave other G1s. I remember once I left a baby crumpet at the thrift store then a day later someone here made a brag about it. :) I felt much better that pony went to someone who wanted it... I would of just flipped it.

It may sound strange, and this only applies to G1 ponies, but it really depends on how they're being presented. I can rationalize walking away if they're being displayed as collectibles because I feel like someone who will appreciate them will get them.

On the other hand...I recently bought G1 ponies I didn't really need because they were displayed on the ground (in the dirt) at a swap meet. I also took home another that day that was squished up in a box and baking in the Florida sun. I just couldn't walk away and leave them to that fate...I had to rescue them!

Hope that doesn't sound too silly

this is true!!! if i went to like, an antique store and saw a case full of g1s, id only pick my favorite of the bunch-or none at all if theyre overpriced ; )

but everytime i see g1s at the thrift store or at a swap meet i scoop them up. my collection is pretty small, im always looking to add more in general, even if they arent on my wishlist.

Anypony I don't have. My goal is at some point in my life, before I shuffle off, to have at least one of every my little pony toy, set, etc. Ever made.

I haven't been put to the test yet (the secondhand pony market around here is kind of nonexistent XD), but I get the feeling that I'd have to take ANY G1 home, regardless of their condition or whether or not I have them already.

G1s I take home if they are at the flea or yard sales, unless I know another collector is planning on going there that day. :)

If they are in an antique store, it kind of depends; if they are reasonably priced and in fecent condition, and if I haven't found any in that store before, I buy at least one.   That way the seller knows someone in the area buys them, and will keep bringing them. :)

I do not like to leave anything behind! Unless the price is outrageous like $10 for a peachy.

I used to leave no pony behind but I was drowning in G3's for a while and I don't actively collect them so I stopped buying them. For G4 I only buy non mane six and usually only if there are more than 1 in the bag. Since I have all the G4's so the extras are for custom bait or reselling. I wasn't picking up G2's but then I started to because I thought one day I might get into them and regret not getting them. For the most part I buy every G1 except recently I left behind a Peachy because I have like 5 and I left an Up Up and Away because I already have 2. At the Antique Mall I only bought 3 of the 15 or so because they were higher priced.

No G1 left behind, as long as they're not overpriced.  Overpriced ponies aren't likely to wind up in some kid's grubby mitts anyways.  (Nothing against kids, but they're messy and put stuff in their mouths all the time, and G1's don't meet modern safety standards.  They're better off with older kids and/or collectors.)

G1, but these days it depends on the price. I DO leave them behind often now, at the toy fair, because otherwise I would have a lot of common ponies and no money. The prices are often stupid for these.

I can't leave any ponies behind because it's so rare that I find them!
Title: Re: No pony left behind

I only display very few ponies these days, which is why I've become pickier about which ponies I buy and which ones I leave behind. At carboot sales, I will usually buy any G1s I find, unless they're a) very common and in poor condition and / or b) grossly overpriced. With the other generations, it depends on whether I've already got the pony and whether I'd like to have it, as well as price and condition.

In charity shops, I'm a bit picker, mostly because prices tend to be a lot higher. Also, I don't feel bad for leaving ponies behind, as they're very unlikely to be thrown away and will probably find another good home.

I'm a bleeding heart and rarely leave anyone behind  :lookround:
I do pick up G3s/G4s, clean them up and then trade or sell them. This is so I can help others get ponies they want, and I get some money to buy the ponies I am looking for  ^.^

I never leave a G1 behind if it's at the thrift store or flea market (well I have a couple times in the past and regret it now haha). If it's a duplicate I pick it up to trade, if it's a bait I pick it up so it can get in the hands of customizers. Basically I want to get as many ponies back into the collector market as possible even if they don't stay with me haha.

G3s I always pass up as I have so many and can't handle any more, G4 I'm picking up any less common (not mane 6), and I haven't seen a G2 in years haha

In thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, etc., I'll take legit any G1 (haven't found one yet though haha), any G2 (also never found one of these in a thrift store), and any G3 I don't have regardless of condition (and if it's one I do have I'll get it if it looks like an upgrade), and G4s I don't have yet (unless they're suuuper similar to one I already have).

I have left ponies behind that I didn't have yet that I found "in the wild" before.

Once at Breyerfest someone was selling tonsss of ponies for cheap, but lots of people seemed excited to be finding them so I only bought a few, so that was one case where I've left behind G1s, G2s, and G3s.  The room was so popular that I have no doubt there were no ponies left by the end of the weekend!

Another time I left behind G1s was at a comic con.  There was a big box of G1s, but by and large they were all common and suuuuper baity and wildly overpriced.  Finding G1s in the wild is so uncommon for me though that I couldn't resist just getting one.  So that's how $10 Baity Peachy came to join my herd   To be quite honest if I had found them earlier in the day before I had spent so much money a few more may have come home with me as well  :lookround:

G2 ponies, all the g2 ponies I see on garage sales are for me, as nobody seems to want them in my country !
I take all the G1 ponies I can find too because they're quite rare on garage sales here
I rarely go on "antique store" because it's always overpriced (Is there gold in the G1 ponies they sell or something !?)

For G3 and G4 I just pic the one I don't have or I like but I lot of people sell them as batch so it's no rare that I come back home with G3 and G4 too

I rarely see any ponies in the wild :( but if I did I would probably not leave any behind, unless they were G3.5/G4 or overpriced, in super bad condition, etc. (Unless they were at an antique store or similar)

I think because I dont get out often to buy G1 ponies that when I do see them I end up buying them all. I should be more selective but I can't help it. ><: I have thought about it more I will only try to get the more harder to find ones. That is if I see them at all in the wild.

For me, since I don't find a lot of secondhand ponies, I have to make my rescues carefully; usually I go to toy fairs/conventions, where the typical pony is "SOOPAR R@RE!!!! MINT CONDITION G1 PEACHY!!! $500!!" type of sellers, so you have to be careful about who you buy and for how much! ;) But I did buy a grubby and dirty G1 BBE Baby Shady, simply because she was the only G1 at the entire antique fair, and I wanted to save her from the bin of overpriced G3s the buyer was trying to hawk! (This was back when G3 was still in stores, so I knew they'd find a good home with someone!)

I also 'rescued' a G1 Little Flitter with black permanent marker all around her feet, because I felt bad for her! Someone had 'hit' all of the pony sellers at this particular toy show before I did, but she got left behind!! Poor Little Flitter!

Oh! I also went to a (moderately overpriced) toy booth at an anime con, many years ago, and rescued three TE Bright Eyes! I didn't need three, but for $5-10 each, I thought they were one of the rare worthwhile buys in the booth! (Meanwhile, a manky G1 Seashell sat behind glass priced at $25 because she was a "rare sitting pony"... >.>)

At a toy fair or a collectors market, I would leave a G1 behind (depending on who it is/how much it is/if I already have them etc...)

But at a thrift store or a boot sale, absolutely no G1 will be left behind. I so rarely find them in the wild so if I see any, I'm grabbing them!

This is such a good story  :accomplished: !! It's really amazing what non collectors consider rare and worth money, and what's not. My mom asks me all the time about which ponies she should buy for me and stuff, and what makes them special, etc. She almost didn't buy a whole lot of sweet sister ponies for me for really cheap because she though they were fakies!!! It pays to educate ; )

I seem to take everyone but the fast food toy ponies in, unless the fast food ones are in super good shape, then I use them for swaps.  Other that than I tend to pick up any I find just in case they are better than the ones i have or I can trade them.

Indeed it does. I once found a G1 at a carboot sale, and the seller said she had another one, only she thought it might be fake. It was a Dream Beauty. :)

I used to have a "no pony left behind" policy, but as I'm now hip deep in them I am more selective. I still won't leave G1s at a thrift store, but I'll only pick up certain G3s and none mane 6 G 4s ( or fashion style size, as they seem to sell well. )

I'm with most other people here - toy fairs and antique markets, unless it's rare or one I don't have, it has to stay. Charity shops, bootsales etc unless it is super common and baity it stays behind. G1s are never left behind :D Though to be fair if I haven't bought anything or am feeling flush I will buy anything. *looks at overflowing pony doubles box*

SundanceSadie, that totally makes sense to me! :) I also have a tendency to prefer rescuing things I collect from poor conditions, and have caught myself buying something I already had and didn't need, just because of sad circumstances, several times

If found at second hand shops or charity shops I never leave behind any G1 or G2 ponies, regardless of condition. They are usually priced decently in these places (e.g. a G1 pony will never be priced higher just because of its age and availability, a G4 pony and a G1 baby will have about the same price, as they are about the same size and have the same function, meaning they are both toy ponies).

If at flea markets, from people who sell them for profit and thus often overprice them, I do leave them behind, even if I don't have them yet. I am usually good at keeping the limits of what is the price I am willing to pay for a pony, and if they are more expensive than this I don't have an issue leaving them behind. I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy them, and everytime I looked at them I could only see the high price I paid if I bought them.

My policy was always that I would take any G1 home with me, leaving one behind was unthinkable. However, I think I have enough manky Cherries Jubilees now, I left at least three of those behind in the last couple of years. I'm afraid I'm a lousy pony mum. :P

I don't think I could leave and G1, G2, or G3 behind. G3.5, G4, I could probably let someone else have. I've brought home ponies in all conditions- just as long as they're not overpriced, I'm fine with it.

I leave them behind all the time unless they are a highly favored pony for me.  Most of the time I can't justify more and more as usually the ones I find are in abundance on ebay and don't sell really.  If it is a pony I don't have I grab it, but I have noticed lately they are asking more and more for G1's so someone must realize they are collectible now. Argh

I can barely leave a McD pony or bad condition G4 behind and only if it's in a bag of junk with nothing else I want.

Everything else, is coming with me.

Dragonfly, those poor one-eyed G2s!  I barely care if gems are missing; it's so easy to stick in a Zirconia.

All G1s and G2s come home with me.  :)  Doesn't matter the condition; I've brought some pretty manky g1s home.  And, honestly, I find g1s *slightly* more than I do g2s - so both are relatively rare in this area.

I will leave behind Core 7 and common g3s: Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Starswirl, etc.  However, all G3 unicorns and pegasus tend to come home.

I only bring home fashion style g4s and uncommon ones (special editions and one-off characters.  :)

All G1s come home with me no matter the condition or whether I have it already. 80s ponies are so rare to stumble upon in the wild around here that I just couldn't leave them behind. I found a nice pile of ponies last week at Goodwill but I only bought the G1s and left behind the G3s. It used to be I'd take home ANY pony (even McPonies in the toy bin :P ) and anything MLP related --- puzzles, books, games, playsets. Now I try to limit myself to stuff I don't have in my collection. I recently left behind three BAB ponies from Goodwill because I had all of them and they'd been priced at a whopping $10 each!!  :yikes:  I usually leave behind G3.5 and Ponyville now since I'm not so interested in those anymore. I do pick up a G4 if it's one I've never seen before and also because they don't take up too much room lol :silly:

I didn't think I'd leave behind a G2 but I did that the other day.
