Title: If you could alter a G1 rump symbol / cutie mark for pony perfection?
Post by: glitterball on February 11, 2017, 01:20:41 AM
Scenario: pony with gorgeous colouring/body/pose
however: symbol/cutie mark not that great (in your personal opinion)

Which pony do you have that you feel could be improved with a re-design of their symbol?
What would you do?

Just change the colour?
Make the symbol smaller?
Design a completely new symbol that better reflects the pony's name/personality?
Make the symbol 3D?

This is only a bit of fun and not meant to be controversial     I understand that perhaps a beloved childhood pony may be discussed so please keep it friendly and not upset any feelings!  :thumb:

I was visiting the POTD thread and Love Story sprang to mind -
lovely pastel body but a deep red symbol that, imo, perhaps is a little too dark
and should be designed with pastel pinks just a few shades darker than the hair colouring.  :)

The two first one that came to my mind are two Twinkle Eyed Ponies, Galaxy and Sky Rocket.

Both are actually cute ponies, but their cutie marks are SO simples! Also I saw a lot with the problem that the lines are so thin that they ending losing their cutie marks with the years.

The other thing that I HATE are Beddy Bye Eye Ponies!
They are so cute, and then you see the eyes.... they scare me

I think the only symbols I would changer are those that are prone to be problematic over time: magic message symbols and glitter symbols.

There are a number of ponies I absolutely love in both groups (Pinwheel, Sparkler, Sunbeam, MM Windy, Floater, Mirror Mirror, Cuddles) and I wish they just had the traditional painted on symbols.

Dazzleglow's symbol bugs me. Happy Glow's symbol suits her, the other two in the set have elegant symbols, and Dazzleglow has...yellow umbrellas. I'd have gone with a celestial theme for her, something like Glory or Moondancer's symbol would have been nice.

I'd like to make the Sundae Best ponies' 3D symbols flat like a normal pony. I don't know what added value Hasbro thought that gimmick brought.

I would also change all of the "babyish" symbols on the baby ponies. Assuming that baby ponies will eventually grow into adults, it's going to be very awkward to be a middle-aged mare with a bib or rattle on your rump. Also, Sticky/Sniffles' symbol, because in what sort of nightmare world is it okay for a baby horse to have a horse's head on a stick for a symbol? (And then name him Sticky?! You just know that kid grows up to be a serial killer.)

Yes, I agree, some of the glittery symbols, although beautiful, are just not play-proof and it is so sad to see a pony where the glitter has flaked off. Moonstone sometimes ends up like this :(

Hahaha! OMG so funny!  :devious:

Ponies whose symbols don't match their names at all. Though in the case of the Tropical Ponies it'd be easier to switch the name of three and find a new name for the Pegasus.

Tootie Tails should have been called Pina Colada.
Hula Hula should have been called Sea Breeze
Pina Colada should have been called Hula Hula
Sea Breeze needed a new name entirely

I find poor Cotton Candy's symbol very boring. Otherwise I can't think of any I'd change. I'm going to keep an eye now, lol

I have a Moon Dancer with the moon faded off but the stars are still OK.

My plan is to use a cut-out template and an airbrush and Testors model paint to re-shoot the moon.  I'm still experimenting with paints that are stable on ponies because acrylics aren't....I wonder what the original are made of.

There are so many nice ponies out there with nothing wrong with them that can't be fixed except for the symbols being damaged so this is a great place to focus on for improving them!  fun topic.

Seems like a resume:  x years as serial killer, What are your qualifications to be mob boss?  I just want to move up to management.

I never really liked how similar Lightning's symbol was to Thundercloud's. For fun I designed g4 versions of all the mountain boys and I decided to redo Lightning's symbol and came up with this:

It still has the cloud and lightning bolt, but it's much more distinct  ^.^

Ooh great design! What a fun project, redesigning them as g4 versions!  :thumb:

well in that case that is a hobby horse, as they were known by still awkward though.

I second munchies symbol, hotdogs really!

Baby moondreamer symbols bother me for my personal tastes, her colours are so pretty then that orange symbol ugh yellow would have been nicer

Yeah, that one's always bugged me too. It just seems so out of place among all the other ponies' symbols.

I love Sorbet's symbol and would probably like the other 3D ones if I had them.

If you don't like Munchy then that's not a problem, she's too expensive anyway so, so what.  But what about Mimic?  I wanna parrot cuz I've always had real parrots but she's too expensive too.

Oh sorry this was supposed to be about changing symbols not liking them as they are.  Speaking of too expensive ponies with lame symbols what about Repunzel?  A dunce cap?  haha could use maybe some flowing long hair down her leg instead, and make the hat at least look like the Disney Princess hat it's supposed to be, at that price.

Or just make it actually SAY "dunce" and ship her with a stool for sitting in the corner of the classroom.  I'd buy that (but not at her price eeeeeks!)

I can't think of any in particular...but I hate when the colors just seem to be ll over the place with no rhyme or reason.  (same with hair color).  I love colors, but I like thm to go well together, lol

Funny you should say that -
because I find that my fave ponies are the ones with white bodies - as then their coloured hair and symbols look so elegant!
E.g. Glory, Honeycomb/Surprise, Moondancer, Gusty, Sundance.
