Title: Soon there won't be any ponies for me to buy new in shops
Post by: Artemesia's Garden on January 26, 2017, 03:09:32 AM
For the first time since I started collecting again. I'm not planning to buy in to 4.5 so I'm feeling quite sad that soon I won't be able to just walk in to TRU and find ponies to buy! Other collectors must have gone through similar times when there were no ponies that they fancied in the shops. My collection does kinda need to stop growing now though because I've run out of space

I know how you feel! I saw the "4.5" ponies for the first time in a shop yesterday and I just couldn't get enthusiastic about them. I'd hoped seeing them in real life might have changed my opinions and make me want at least a few, but it doesn't seem to have worked. There are still normal G4s around, but I can't find pearlised wave 3 anywhere which makes me think many shops have just skipped them. As much as I still love my ponies, I think I'm going to start focusing on actively buying for my other collections

I haven't seen the G4.5 in shops yet but the pics of them on the internet aren't exactly making me have grabby hands right now. I will say that I like that they've made Cadence in the correct colors for the show instead of bubblegum pink, and that she has her purple wings back, I also love that their is a family pack with Cadence , Shining armor and their baby... but the proportions look.... :yikes:
I hope they look nicer IRL

I'm still short of some really HTF G1 accessories, and I have some resotres/alts to finish so I guess I'll just be focussing on those! But part of me really likes a pony trip out.  Maybe G4s will start appearing in thrift shops soon and I can go out and look for those.  I don't mind commons if I find them in the charity shop! I found some G3s the other week or more accurately my Mum did.  So it's not all doom and gloom.

I know what you mean. It sucked quite a bit when the lack of quality drove me away from G4. Sadly I've had to give up most modern toy brands, not just ponies. Quality just keeps getting worse across the board ): It sucks. There's just something fun about going to the toy store and picking out a new toy! Its not the same to buy off of Amazon or whatever even though packages are fun too.

I might get a G4.5 or two, just to keep my collection rounded, but I doubt I'd spend retail prices. Maybe from China off eBay or a thrift store. And only with a closed mouth! The open mouth is a thing of nightmares :yikes:

Yeah, I'm in the same boat :( The G4.5s I've seen so far just don't do it for me and I really don't like Guardians of Harmony.. I mean I guess I could warm up to them later (I didn't like G4 much at first, after all), but atm I'm kinda unsure what to do. I'm not really into most of the new Monster High dolls either so in a way, I kinda hope something new comes out soon, haha.. buying stuff online is nice but there's just something about being able to go into a store and pick something out yourself, y'know?

Same here, I really am not liking the G4.5s. We've been getting most of the Guardians line that was like.

I wasn't big on G4s when they first came out, but seeing them in person, they grew on me. Seeing the G4.5s in person is just confirming I don't care for the style (or the articulated ones). Maybe one or two might really catch my eye down the road, but for now there's no plans to buy any.

I'm sort of in the same boat.

I'm not a fan of the articulated GoH toys and I've only gotten thefan seres figures from that line (Celestia, NMM, Chrysalis). The only sets I've gotten with the new molds (I refuse to call them 4.5) are Celestia and Rainbow Dash. I'm not super eager to get the rest, especially sine I ordered a loose set of them all from China a few months back.

I've been telling my husband that I miss going out regularly to look for new releases of ponies, but I guess it's okay. I can focus on my other collections and finish off my G1 and G3 want lists.

I'm stopping with the G4 line also.   I've seen some of the G4.5s in stores, and a few aren't bad. But I don't like the ones with the open mouths, and Lyra is just freakin' scary!!

So I'm not collecting G4.5's.....and I'm a little bit sad, but also relieved  :)   More space and money for the generations that I enjoy much more!

I bought the two G4.5's that I thought were cute from a Chinese ebay seller. I wanted them, but I did not want to give hasbro my money for them since I am over all unhappy with the new look. I'm hoping they will get better as the line progresses.

I'm with you. And I know it's kind of crappy to say but I'll be kind of glad when FiM/G4 is over and G5 comes along because I got high hopes that they'll go back to something similar to G1 or G3. Until then, I can put my pony collecting on a slow down. I still love G4 and enjoy getting some of the older ones I don't have but I've been burnt out on the main 6 for years now and the reboot/g4.5 kind of put the nail in the coffin.

If it helps I've seen them in person and I don't really mind them and they've fixed a few inaccuracies that were left standing for quite a long time (like Applejack's eyes, one of the most recent releases finally gives her properly shaped eyes), the proportions aren't all that different either; they've made the bodies slightly smaller and the heads slightly larger, I think the reason why so many people feel it looks off is because the face is rounder so the transition from the neck to the head isn't as smooth as it was with the previous set.

There's always the Guardians of Harmony line though, those are really accurate and a second set is beginning to appear now

I hated the open mouth too but someone on instagram makes cute customs using G4 and they recently did one using one of the new open mouth molds and they painted in the tongue and it just looks so much better.

Reminds me of big lots around here toys have been reduced to two shelves facing one another, they only had six ponies last time five ribbon in hair ones, and one pearly that was fluttershy. Where am I gonna find the rest of the pearly ones?  Also there are no TRU, or toys r us around me at all. The only other place is walmart ,and I have not checked back in ages.

I've felt like that since 1994. I've had ponies from the other generations, but none of them are G1 and so none of them really work for me in the same way.

I've only had access to a TRU since moving across London. They're really badly distributed and so often on retail parks which if you don't drive are a pain to get to.

The 4.5's look like rodents to me. Just sayin. LOL!
I'm going to keep working on my G1's and my G4 brushables but I probably won't be buying 4.5.

I stopped buying ponies in store mid g3. I still buy one I fancy everyone and then, but for the most part, I just skip them. I do however always look at the pony aisle when I'm in store just in case I see something that's cute! That's how I ended up with most of my G4 ponies. The rest I bought online because it's cheaper.

It's not as fun as it used to be, that's for sure. I remember buying and saving for every g3 pony! Then once butterfly island came about I slowed down and only bought the ones I liked, and by the time g3.5 had came out I wasn't buying any from the shelves. :/ saves me money and allows me to focus on G1 and other collections! The last pony I bought in store was zecora!

Wow, so many of us are stopping because if the redesign. I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. The G4 hype train has definitely slowed to a crawl. I felt from the moment I received my set of pearly brushables from eBay that maybe they were the last I would add to my collection. I still plan to pay attention to new releases for a bit just in case a new character comes out that catches my eye but it's an interesting feeling after having collected for the past 5-6 years to look at my shelf and seeing it as complete. It's a relief overall but I will miss the excitement.

yeah im feeling your pain too. since the g4 brushable came out i always had something to look forward too and to look out for but now there isn't a single thing.
equestria girls; im not getting into the EQGD minis and they dont sell the normal big ones, they went months ago,
blind bags; we only get 1 in every 3 waves that come out which is both weird and very annoying but also they are $6each here which is too expensive for a piece of plastic plus i can't see the codes to well.
G4.5; not doing, iv collected all the normal g4 brushable and those new ones are just too ugly.
aaaaand the little story packs they dont sell here either anymore, there is too much we (and other country's) are missing out on and iv spent so much and traded so much to get stuff that never made it here, so im sitting out on anything that comes out now...............its kind of sad after all these years

I collected the G4s when they first came out but I sold my whole collection a few years ago. Now I've started collecting again I don't think I'll be bothering with any of the G4s and definitely not the 4.5. There is just something off about them. But I suppose it makes my bank manager happy as that's one less thing to spend money on!

Yessss to all of this :( I miss EQG. Blind bags aren't too expensive over here but they do take ages to come out (either there's months between waves or they release two waves at once and it's hard to find them all, there's no in between >_<) and also they split the waves into two which is just bizarre + very annoying.

We get the story packs over here, but for some reason they don't sell the single ponies over here (like Maud, Luna, etc) and half the time they're the only ones I'm interested in :( It's the end of an era..

I personally like the new reboot series(another in the group who won't be calling them 4.5) Less competition now. I get tired of never being able to find new releases because they're sold out.  :P Though I will forever be mad about how poorly designed the new gala outfits are. I just wanted gala outfits!  -_- But the pony mold themselves...I like. Aside from Cadance. Too balloon-y, even in person.

My sympathies to those who don't like them. But hey, more money to invest in other collections or in other ponies, right?

Not loving th G4.5's, though I did see a custom Fluffle Puff on one which was quite cute. I shall continue working on my older gen ponies until its over.

I wonder if this was the same reaction when G3.5 came out???

I hated the G2 (find them looking like anorexic giraffes) and the G3,5 (the deformed huge heads..yuck). Never collected the G3 either, but i have a few home.

G4 somehow grew on me, but i'm not sure at all either about the 4,5....

The reaction for G3.5 was much worse. I'd say this is closer to the reaction that the original style G4 had. There were quite a few complaints about how they were small and cheap and "didn't look like horses" but there was still a good amount of fans. Almost nobody liked G3.5.

I'm sad aswell. :/ My ponies live across the country with my mother for now while I live with my boyfriend, until we move to the sames state and I can be reunited with them. I stopped collecting them about three years ago anyway though, when the quality rapidly declined, G4 MLP became nothing but a line for Bronies and pop culture "nerdz" and idk, it jsut kinda ruined ponies for me. I liked G4 for a while, but it went south pretty fast. I have almost 300 ponies I do believe.
Then I picked up Monster High and fell in love with not only that line, but dolls in general. i have nearly 100 dolls, mostly MH but a few random other dolls.

However... As another user said, ALL toy lines seem to be declining across the boards. I jumped ship on MLP a few years ago and decided my collection will stay as is maybe one or two additions or so, who knows. But now MH just rebooted and it's... pretty bad. A few are okay but mostly not.

So now the two toy lines I really loved are essentially dead in my eyes, and the fun of going into toy stores or aisles and looking at new stuff and maybe getting something is gone. :/ Honestly I just walk straight through toy aisles now, skimming until I find something I like, but I never do, so I always walk right back out again in about 2 seconds. Makes me sad.

I think the test of 4.5 will be whether the kids take to them. I think what bothers me about them most is that they are toys-from-cartoon and old MLP was toy-inspired-cartoon. The onus was the opposite way around. But that may appeal to the kids or it may not.

I've seen a lot of these new ponies now and I am not really attracted to any of them. But I do like that Lyra is one of the basic brushables from the off. Lyra has been so annoying in the UK in terms of distribution, it's really quite refreshing that she;s included in something and on shelves properly.

I'm not planning on buying any of these though. I like the more active poses and variations, but I am not a fan of the head moulds. I'm old school, and I believe in toy-inspires-animation, not toy-represents-animation, so thats just my preference.

FWIW I'm not a fan of G3.5 or these new ponies (G4.5, reboot, whatever you want to call them.. wasn't there the same argument about "what do we call it" when G3.5 started up? :P) but I definitely prefer G4.5 if I had to choose between the two. G3.5 is just.. bleh. At least these new ones aren't TOO different, they're still not my thing, but still. XD /ramble

My sympathies to those who don't like them. But hey, more money to invest in other collections or in other ponies, right?

Haha, right! I just keep telling myself this XD

I'm feeling this way about pretty much anything new on shelves for toylines these days...  QC is terrible...  when you compare it to what we USED to be able to buy in toys!

I suppose I've never been drawn to G4 toys. I was drawn to the cartoon, but the toys never impressed me. Seeing as I really got into MLP that way, and then got into the G3 toys a few years ago, this has *always* been a problem for me. The toys they have out in shops aren't the ones I want, and it's always been that way.

Regardless, my pony buying days are over for the foreseeable future, since I went back to school. When I got into collecting, I was not in school and could spend the money I wanted.

This so much..... just some of the ones I have seen have been less than impressive. At this point I would rather get them second hand.

*sigh*  I'm not fond of the G4/5/reboot, either.

I was hoping to like them; I'd gotten so bored with G4.  But, no, I'm not thrilled with the redesign.  I'm happy that some people like them, but personally, I feel like they're...  out of proportion?  They just look odd to me and cheaply designed, to boot.

I wish that Hasbro would do what others toy designers have done and release retro designs alongside their new designs.  Strawberry Shortcake is doing a great job with that and I feel like both fans are covered.  :)

agree.

i am on the hunt for the retro G1's that came out early 2000s but at the time so many people hated them.
im really hoping they will do something like that again, i really wish they would be more adventurous with mlp.

in the mean time i agree with so many in that we are now saving money or have more money to go on other things.

also another thing to add is that future releases will be hairless or shell i say have molded hair, iv notice a decline of mlp toys that have lovely hair to brush and style, i thought that was the purpose of mlp
