Title: What do you eat on christmas?
Post by: Beldarna on December 23, 2016, 09:38:56 AM
After watching a lot of baking and cooking shows with christmas themes I am curious to know what you all eat at christmas :).

Here in Sweden we eat rice porridge with cinnamon and sugar for either breakfast or lunch and breaded ham sandwiches.

Dinner is a buffet that begins with variations of pickled herring, egghalfs with caviar, smoked and /or raw spiced salmon and other types of fish.

Then we begin with the cold food: liver paté, smoked reindeer, smoked elk, cheese, a varieté of sausages and the centerpiece breaded ham.

Last but not least the warm food: meatballs, chipolata, jansons frestelse (jansons temptation) and ribs.

Every dish is served with sauses and gravies and boiled potatoes.

As a desert we eat Ris ala Malta which is left over rice porridge mixed with whipped cream, served cold with fresh fruits.

Of course every family has it's own take on it and it varies from different parts of the country.

Your turn. Tell me :)

EDIT: as my tablet had mixed up the order..

Hiya Sweden neighbor
Christmas eve wouldn't be Christmas eve without rice porridge with cinnamon, sugar, and a bit of butter on top in the morning! And in the evening, we have pinnekjøtt with rutabaga and potatoes, and for dessert, rice pudding (AKA cold rice porridge) served with a single almond, and whoever gets it gets the marzipan pig. I really don't like rice pudding or marzipan, but tradition is tradition :P

We have a Japanese Christmas! That is because my friend from Philippines who lived in Japanese culture stays with us every year, and we want him to feel at home in the States! So what do we get!? A $20 KFC bucket with all the sides , a strawberry shortcake or chocolate lava cake, and wine!  :P Also we eat our stocking candy and roasted mixed nuts while we watch movies. We all get the itis and then open presents!

At my grandma in-laws (we celebrate a christmas twice!) we eat a brunch with sandwiches, cookies, chex mix, brownies, and all kinds of desserts. I feel like I need a dentist appointment after visiting because of all the desserts! This year I HAVE to be good and NO junk because I can no longer eat crazy desserts like that- healthy food only!  I requested a veggie tray!

I guess you could say that we have an ''American Christmas". We eat Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, cranberry sauce, and we sometimes have turkey. It slightly varies every year, but that's all the main food.

It varies from year to year as my housemate and I cook all our own food (very different tastes) and rarely if ever have meals at the same time. He's doing a sort of traditional dinner (turkey, carrots, peas, sprouts, new potatoes and all that) and I'm going to do a Thai green curry with some fish, various veg and harissa couscous instead of rice (it's much quicker to prepare!)

On Christmas Eve we have platters full of crackers, cream cheese, sausage, shrimp, pickles, cubed cheese and fried foods like mozzarella sticks, loaded potatoes and chicken strips.

For breakfast we have scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, hashbrowns, toast or rolls and juice or coffee.

For lunch / dinner (it gets served around 2 p.m.) we have turkey, dressing or mashed potatoes (certain people like one or the other), carrots, peas, turnip, cranberries and a platter with things like pickles and cheese.

You are all making me hungry! I love roast spuds with veggies

We will be having roast spuds, sprouts (no walnuts this year as I couldn't find any), carrots, peas, mashed swede, roast parsnips, and maybe some Yorkshire puds if we get around to it. I will be having a Quorn roll with veggie sausage and bacon and I think my OH got some beef. Our son will have a mix of both. For dessert we have a choice of mince pies with cream or chocolate yule which my mother made and dropped off for us, it has been sat in my kitchen since yesterday and the amount of willpower I have had to had not to scoff the whole lot has been immense :D The rest of the day we just pick at whatever we want.

I NEED Xmas lunch to get here now.... :D

This year we are not doing very classic for Christmas.  We will be having Green Bean Casserole, Whole Wheat bread/Italian Bread, Chicken and Rice Casserole, Pie and some sort of Potato Casserole with Tea.  It is kind of a weird mixture, but it was stuff that was made for our family due to the crisis we are all going through at this time.

Our christmas dinner is usually just the typical american thanksgiving dinner all over again.

This year we'll be having brisket instead of turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, lots of bread rolls, and I'm sure some casseroles and other side dishes and desserts.
I don't fully know what the dinner plan is yet

Last year my mom prepared a roast, green beans, rice, and steak fries. It was delicious.

We don't have a typical Christmas dinner, though.

Not much different than on normal days. I am very picky with food and can't stand most Christmas dishes. ^^; I do have some favorite foods that I always associate with Christmas, like the rice porridge with cinnamon and sugar and, a Karelian-born that I am, Karelian pasties. Also a lot of glögg!

Growing up it was usually like a pot roast or something to that effect with basic sides, veggies and potatoes and the like. Past few years have been REALLY tight for us around Christmas (we're usually broke by the end of the month because of bills), so it's whatever we can do. My husband's late father did pork shoulder the two years we were living with him before he passed, and that's my husband's option of choice if we could do it.

So it kinda works out this year we're going to some friends for Christmas and they're doing pork, lol.

Our Christmas has changed a lot the last few years as our family changes. We used to have Christmas Eve at my parents with my grandparents where mom would make a ham, mashed potatoes, corn, and gravy. Now I celebrate Christmas Eve with my fiancé's side. The meal seems to change from year to year there. This year will be potato soup, ham dumpling soup, and some Spam spread on buns. There will probably be wine and lefse too! My fiancé and I made no bake cocoa cookies, white chocolate Chex mix, puppy chow, scotcheroos, and Ritz crackers with peanut butter dipped in chocolate almond bark.

We don't really do anything specific or special with breakfast. Christmas Day is at my moms side of the family which usually includes turkey and/or ham, twice baked potatoes, rice cooked with the turkey, lefse, my gramma's AMAZING Christmas sugar cookies, holiday punch, and lots of goodies like popcorn cake and other homemade goodies.

Glogg!  I've always wanted to try that.  :)

My family does semi-traditional American Christmas dinner.  A meat of some sort; this year it's turkey (because we were out of town for Thanksgiving) but other years, we've done roast, ham or goose.  Stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and dessert.

You're all getting me hungry! :P Interesting dishes, I had too google some of them. I really like the diversity everyone has.

slyons, your welcome, grandma usually cooks for double the amount of guests in case some stray should wander in (which never happens).. I have the pleasent task to peel the potatoes today. I promised I'd help and that's the task I was given.. My fingers will hate me at the end of the day, hehe, but I am thankful I have them.

Aaa, glögg.. totally forgot. We'll have that, gingerbreads and treats to Donald Duck at 3 pm.

On Christmas Eve my mom does a big spread of sampler things like meatballs in a sauce, potato skins, flat bread with spinach dip, pin wheels, rolled ham, cheese balls, chili cheese dip ect. She has all kinds of sweets like those cream puffs, cheese cake bites, fruit dip. I could go on and on she has a massive spread that goes from the kitchen to dining room. We eat and chat, then she usually makes a few alcoholic drink choices and we play board games.

Christmas Day my mom does the traditional southern stuff like ham, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, casserole and pies ect. I know she spends like at least $500 on food and a whole week she prepares. My sister helps because making bread and truffles and fresh cinnamon rolls for everyone Christmas morning. I run errands because I suck in the kitchen.

We usually have ham, turkey, chicken, prawns, roast veg or salad (depending on how hot is, this year is cool-ish, so roast veg it is, whoot!) for the main meal, sometimes that's lunch, sometimes dinner, it depends on everyone's plans. We also have LOTS of snacks. Hubby and I always make rum balls, apricot balls and white christmas, this year we made tia maria balls too (rum balls with tia maria substitute), and for other snacks we have pretzels, chocolate bullets, nuts in all their forms, shortbread, wafer cigars and so much fruit. We were in charge of snacks this year, we usually just make the sweets, and we maaay have gone a bit crazy, haha!

I can't believe no one has said deviled eggs yet! Those are my favorite!!

We do a pretty traditional "American" Christmas meal. So usually ham, prime rib, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, corn, bread rolls, and then the finger foods (veggie tray, deviled eggs, etc).
For dessert it's usually pie of various sorts. Pumpkin, Apple, cherry.

Ah this all sounds wonderful!

We are doing sort of the italian tradition of fish on Christmas Eve (it's usually the feast of the 7 fishes, which includes some weird stuff like whole bluefish and octopus) but we're having a simple salmon with herb butter. I'm actually going to my boyfriend's house this year and they're Puerto Rican so we're having pernil (a roast pork shoulder that his mom slow roasts ALL day) with some sort of salad and a small dessert. I'm bringing some hungarian cookies (filled with either raspberry, apricot, or poppy filling) as well, which we also have Christmas Day.

For Christmas Day which we do we have prime rib, eggplant parm, lots of vegetables and roasted carrots, and more cookies for dessert! We also have a traditional antipasto for an appetizer. Lately our family hasn't been eating too much dessert for some reason so we only have a few cookies and that's it

The only people in the house who know how to cook the ham are ill so it's been postponed. Those of us who like it are having ramen and I'll probably have a PB&J or a can of stew. XD Or maybe macaroni.

We don't have any kind of tradition or typical meal or anything. We try to get some stuff from Swiss Colony when we stay home for Christmas but its hit or miss and not necessarily the same every year. My boyfriend absolutely loves the tradition of Christmas tamales but we've never actually been able to do it since, you know, Idaho. I hope he managed to get some this year since he was in California!

I spent Christmas with my aunt, uncle, and a cousin this year. Typically they have cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast but we did that a few days early when another cousin came to visit and we did some presents with her. Instead we had a breakfast casserole thing (biscuit, egg, sausage, cheese, gravy) and an absolutely amazing prime rib for dinner. The casserole wasn't any sort of tradition but I think the prime rib might be.

Of course we had some sweets during the week too but I don't think they're like a tradition or anything. We had delicious peanut butter cookies but they ran out before Christmas. We made little hollies out of corn flakes, marshmallows, and Red Hots along with salted caramel brownies on Christmas Eve so we had some of those left.

We used to have a traditional sit-down dinner with baked ham and all that but haven't done so in a couple years.

This year it was spaghetti and meatballs with my parents and one of my sisters (the other sister lives far away and didn't get back this year, usually my parents go to her but they chose to stay home this year).

The Christmas Eve party was mostly finger foods, pulled pork and sliced turkey/ham for sandwiches and way too many cookies/cakes/candy.

Actually my husband and I typically have Kraft macaroni and cheese since we like being lazy on Christmas Day when left to our own devices. ^^*

I am in the UK so its the UK traditional dinner for us.

Christmas Eve - we made a light meal of jacket potatoes and chicken/bacon salad.

Christmas Day - Roast Turkey and Roast Beef with boiled and roasted potatoes, roasted parsnips, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and peas with vienetta to follow - none of us like Christmas pudding.  Then for tea later, various warmed snacks and cold meats.

And a load of chocolate's :)

we always share opłatek before our meal! its these little thin wafers with pictures of the nativity or other scenes on them. we break off a piece as a pair, and each say a prayer for the other for the coming new year. in my family, we also just say what we love about the other person! then you eat the wafer!

once everyone has broken opłatek with everyone else, we eat!  :P

even though the traditional polish christmas eve meal is usually meatless, we usually have sausage, green beans, rice, pierogis, and almonds!

then on christmas morning, we have apple pancakes! we try a different recipe each year; we're still looking for our favorite! :-)
