Title: Shelves
Post by: karrie91 on December 10, 2016, 07:30:27 PM
Just wondering what everyone is using for displaying their ponies/dolls/collectibles. I'm on the fence of trying an open shelf bookcase. Walmart has some pretty good deals on them with good review but I'm not sure yet. Currently, all my things sit on the top of my bookcases that all my books are stored in. I'm not huge on space right now. I have a spare room which doubles as a library/office. I'd like to also make it a showcase room for my things. I doubt my boyfriend wants all my dolls and what not spilling into the living room lol.

So what are you guys using? Basic bookcases? Wall shelves? Ideas would be great.

I have my g4s on the top of my ikea bookcase, and my g1s on a small shelf. Nothing fancy but it works perfectly in my bedroom.

I used to have ponies/dolls sitting out in the air and I couldn't stand it. They get coated with dust and the constant re-cleaning is just a pain. We can't afford a bunch of glass cabinets so I have two mismatched glass door shelving things we got for awesome deals (one is intended as an entertainment center and the other for like dishes or something I guess).

My main display is covered in saran wrap because I was so sick of the dust >.< Its ridiculous and looks terrible (way worse in photos than real life) but it keeps my ponies clean! It works for now until I can score some cheap glass door displays off of Craigslist.

Oooo I love that shelf. That would look really cute with pony dolls. I have a spare card table that I might use to display some things in my library. I don't want to block my books because that looks cluttered to me. I'm still considering an open shelf case. Especially for my dolls so they can be seen from every angle. Something like this:

My only concern is that because it's so open, my cats might be more encouraged to jump up and mess with my things. Ponies have hair that's very appealing to cats. Same for dolls lol

Billy bookshelves from ikea. They're inexpensive, sturdy, and easy to customize.

We re-did my pony room in the summer, and I went with the Ikea Algot wall shelf system. Basically you install the vertical rails to the wall, and they attach adjustable shelves.

On a bracket shelf high up above my bed...  getting horribly dusty!  :(  In fantasy land, I'd love to have a glass case for them, but those are just too expensive...

I had mine in a pale bookshelf (they're packed away for now) but here's a pic of part of the shelf to get an idea :)

Somewhere, someplace, when considering how to keep dust away from open-air bookshelves, i found a site where you could purchase thin, clear plexiglass-like stuff in various  sizes. The thinking was to attach them to the front of the shelves, even if only leaning them there until I figured out how to attach them without putting any holes in the bookshelves. I never bought them, and now I can,t recall where I found the stuff, but it,s out there, and for those who cannot afford glass door shelves, it's one possible solution to the dust problem. If I remember the website later, will report back in.

I found 2 matching tulip wood veneer china cabbinets with glass doors and shelves on the upper 2/3 and wood doors on bottom 1/3 . With lights in the top. I use novels covered in paper towels as risers. I fond them For free on kijiji.

My blind bags are on cutsy mis-matched wall hanging shelves from value village and yard sales.

My flutters, summer wings and windy wings are in a display case made from an antique radio case, with the radio removed and a glass window where the radio face was.

I have a long open wood shelf in my bedroom that runs the length of the wall, Its nice but the dust is terrible.

My daughters G4`s are displayed in a breyer 2 story stable.

If I ever get a pony room I want Ikea billy book shelves with glass doors.

I like this set up but it makes it kind of hard to see a lot of the ponies

I've thought about watching the thrift store for a decent china cabinent. You can usually get them there for like 75 bucks where I live. But so far the only ones I've seen haven't really been as open as I would like. For now, I have a card table set up in my spare room.

Oh yes, very pretty! And as others mentioned, perhaps using sheets of thin perspex (I have seen sheets sold in UK DIY stores) cut to size and then attached with Velcro/loop-hook tape to stop the dust getting in?

As others have said - IKEA's Billy cases are an inexpensive yet great option too - again, you have to think about protecting your herd from exposure to dust.

Because I only have a small herd, they live on a bookshelf in my room. Since my radiator is broken, I display my dolls on top of that as there's just about enough space

Check out the LACK floating shelves from Ikea- I liked their minimalist design (so the visual focus stays on the ponies!) and they're available in a variety of sizes and finishes. My collection is on 4 of the 72" birch veneer ones.

I love IKEA's Billy bookcases with glass doors for dust/cat protection. My husband drilled extra holes in so I could add extra shelves so I didn't have to use risers, so it's easy to see the ponies and with only having one row I can store things like brushes behind them out of site. This was the start of my set up but sadly they're all in boxes now as we're going to repaint the whole room (purple!) and set up more Billy's. Yay, I'm finally getting my pony room!

I live in a dinky trailer and my currently displayed ponies are on the little original nick-knack shelf that goes over the 5th-wheel bed that has a little railing that makes it hard to see much so I mostly have tiny horse plushes up there and the rest are on a little shelf made of a piece of 1/4" oak shelf (salvaged from an old dresser I broke up for wood) over the entry door and I added a railing to that shelf because the ponies would walk to the front and eventually off when the door closes.  I'm putting up a couple more shelves like this over the sink in the bathroom cuz that's the only other over-head space that isn't taken up by the little built-in cabinets.

The open air does cause a real dust problem but then I have a lot of birds in here with dusty feathers and my trailer park did some illegal demolition over the summer that flooded us in nasty masonry dust that is still clogged into everything.

Ideally, pony shelves should be built into the space around the top of the room, one or two shelves tall and one pony deep, and should have sliding glass doors in the front which aren't expensive or complicated to build...would be nice if the bottoms are glass too but that's fancy to build.  The shelves throughout a room should be supplied with positive-pressure air from a fan with a filter on its intake...ideally a central low-speed ducted fan positioned such that it would be quiet and have a generous plenum after the filter before the fan so the system would be silent and go a long long time in between filter maintenance, and the ponies would be constantly washed with clean filtered air and displayed where you can see them but they don't compete with other things for space.

When I get to heaven, I'll post some brag pics here with such pony shelves...until then, it's dust and dark cardboard boxes for my little friends.

The shelves in the post just above mine are a great solution for those with the luxury of regular shelving and clean air and adding extra shelf positions was a perfect idea, looks beautiful shadowlark!  Hello Creamsicle in the middle there.

I've added some things since this photo was taken several months ago, but I think you can get a sense of the shelving. (Santa was so thoughtful this Christmas!) I like to give my ponies some breathing room so I can appreciate their poses, symbols, charming accessories and details. My preference to arrange them by color also means that the generations and merchandise and artwork are all mixed together...but I kind of like seeing the variety and juxtapositions. G1 and G4 brushables together with a G3 baby and a blind bag figure? It's chaos...but it's organized! At least to me it seems organized   :glitter::biggrin:

In our last apartment, my talented boyfriend custom built some wood shelves in an underutilized alcove behind our bedroom door. I can't find my good photos of that display right now, but here's one of the shelves he built up close- they were a darker stain, but still pretty simple, and I arranged the ponies by generation.

I love the organise-by-colour-and-generation-be-damned look! It looks great the way everyone is jumbled together. Wondering if I could get away with doing this with mine? I will have to take photos of my shelves and post them.

Oh I really like this. I'm actually pretty sure these are the shelves I'm going to go with. My only concern is there is kind of like strips of paneling in my house but I think I can take them down. Hopefully it works out. I think about three of the shorter shelves would work great for me. Thanks so much for sharing!

Since I collect Star Wars merch, and knockoff dolls as well, my g3 ponies get to have the top rack on my bookshelf, while my G1s get to sit below them. In the future I'd like to give my Star Wars merch and Ponies each their own separate case, but my room is far too tiny to fit another shelf in it, so those are plans for the distant future lol

Im also on the hunt for cheap bookshelves! I have the Ikea 5-shelf bookshelf, its nearly 72" tall and white-very tall. I paid like $50 for it on sale, and I feel dumb because my Big Lots sells identical ones for $39ish same color and texture! On walmarts website I see similar white ones for $27 but id have to see them in person....but so far these are the cheapest huge bookshelves ive seen.

Ive been thinking about displaying my ponies all in rainbow order and making custom stair risers out of foam board from dollar tree. xD

Those multi cubical shelves that you put the cubical canvas drawers in would also be good for ponies! (They have like 9 or more squares in the middle of them!) They run fairy cheap everywhere and you could use the top for displaying, and one of those $5 cloth drawers to hide away blindbags or accessories! A few matching floating shelves above it would be really pretty!
