Title: Ponies who are rare but overlooked, in your opinion?
Post by: Haruna on November 24, 2016, 09:10:24 PM
We all know the most famous rare ponies -- Rapunzel, Mimic, Sweet Scoops, etc. But which ponies, in your opinion, are as rare or rarer than these well-known ponies but don't get as much notice?

I'd say magenta Satin 'n Lace, for one. I don't think I've ever even seen her for sale in my years of collecting, and that's saying something.

So, who else, in your opinion, are the overlooked rare ponies?

She isn't too bad just have to be willing to pay for her.

You know honestly I don't like most of those rare ponies like Rapunzel and such. I think oneni like that isn't necessarily hard to find but a little less common is Starty Wings. People seem to like her a lot but just something about threat yellow.

I read somewhere in the net that Bright Eyes is as rare as Mimic but not so priced. Still I haven't had the chance to put my hands on her...
Red Roses, for me, is too HTF, and when she comes around on eBay her price quickly rises.
Sea ponies like WhiteCap or Seabreeze are expensive too and no one talks about them.
Holliwood flutter pony shows up like never on eBay.
Needless to talk about Nirvanas

Scribbles is my Rapunzel, my grail, and I just got her yesterday  I consider her more rare. She doesn't pop up for sale very often and is very prone to head/body mismatch and cancer, so she is very hard to find in great condition.

I remember searching for Lil' Cupcake FOREVER, and I still hardly ever see her for sale, but she doesn't seem to be a very popular or talked about pony. Which is weird, as she is soo pretty!

there are many rare ponies out there, but i find that the more common ones are actually my favorite. the classics like Applejack, Firefly and some of the rainbow ponies like Windy. They may not be rare, but they have beautiful color combinations and are just my favorite.

Also please see list below and add Red Roses.  They have all proved tricky for me to find so I'm looking for TLCs.  I know Floater isn't rare, I'm just looking for the right bait.

I was going to say Re Unicorno. I think I have seen him for sale twice, both times here on the Arena and I think it may even have been the same pony. I don't think I have ever seen Peachbelle for sale but she is a Nirvana :D NCC Cupcake, Baby Waddles, any of the Dream Beauties in the UK .

Lots of good rare ones here! Definitely agree with Scribbles and Dabbles -- can't remember the last time I saw them for sale. And pink Sprinkles. Either she slips under the radar a lot (possible) or she's just never for sale.

Another one I thought of today is lavender Woosie, or even just Woosie in general.

I read somewhere in the net that Bright Eyes is as rare as Mimic but not so priced.
I bet that's true! Both seem to pop up with the same frequency but have vastly different prices.

The Sundazzle SHS
Very true! At least the pink and yellow ones. I seem to run into a lot of the orange one (forget her name).

I'd say magenta Satin 'n Lace, for one. I don't think I've ever even seen her for sale in my years of collecting, and that's saying something.

She comes up from time to time, but it doesn't help that the catalogue image of her is a dressed up Cotton Candy. I can't remember when I got mine and whether I bought her or traded for her, but she was the hardest of the three versions to get, so I agree that she's not as common as the lavender one.

I would argue for some of the UK ponies that are in reality not easy to find but not as popular with people. Nurse Ponies spring to the forefront of my mind. They are some of the rarest, but they don't fetch the highest prices unless they have hats.

I wouldn;t count Dabble and Scribbles because yes, they're rarer, but they still command good prices when they're up on sale. I think Scribbles actually tends to go for more than Dabble, because of her colouring.

Rapunzel's price is an insane abberation in my opinion. Mine isn't perfect, but when I remember I traded a pony for her that cost 50p at a carboot sale back in 1998, I can live with her flaws. The madness is that even my Rapunzel, with her imperfections, would probably fetch a few hundred dollars. I like Sweet Scoops much more. She's understated and thus beautiful without being tacky.

Mimic is a pony I love, but she's always been expensive, and that's a lot of years of damage to undo. It's just woven into the mentality of the community, but I don't think she's that hard to find. She wasn't sold here, true, but I have found her here, and she's not any rarer than Quackers, Bright Eyes, etc - just more sought after, so tends to get hoarded.

But I would say the same happens with Dabble and Scribbles, so I don't think they are underappreciated. When I first got collecting, they were actually on equal grail type status to Rapunzel to a lot of people.

I still need a Pink Sprinkles. Definitely second that one as being a rare and underrated pony. Lavender Woosie...yeah, I guess her too. There aren't a lot of them around these days.

I don't think Re Unicorno is underrated. If you collect Nirvana you know you're going to lay out a lot of money for him if he comes up. He's rare, but not underrated. When I was collecting Italian ponies, years back, he was out of my price range even then.

The Nestie Babies are all annoying because they had such a limited geographical distribution. They probably need more love and attention, for sure, and their accessories even more so. I still even now only have accessories for the one I have in box, and not the other two.

I was going to say Re Unicorno. I think I have seen him for sale twice, both times here on the Arena and I think it may even have been the same pony.

My Re Unicorno previously belonged to the Delaneys so maybe you did see him before :) I've only seen him once or twice before I bought him (one was in poor condition and the other was too expensive for me to consider ^^;).

I don't think Re Unicorno is underrated. If you collect Nirvana you know you're going to lay out a lot of money for him if he comes up. He's rare, but not underrated. When I was collecting Italian ponies, years back, he was out of my price range even then.

pricey =/= underrated. He's expensive but I don't see people talking about him a lot, so he's overlooked in that sense, in my opinion. Unless I'm misunderstanding the thread title?

pricey =/= underrated. He's expensive but I don't see people talking about him a lot, so he's overlooked in that sense, in my opinion. Unless I'm misunderstanding the thread title?

Hrm, maybe so. I am not involved in Nirvana stuff enough to really know that, if I'm honest. When I was involved in Italian ponies, he was the top of most wantlists, and he got a lot of discussion attention. And underrated =/= not discussed very much in my view. Underrated means people don't bother about him. I don't think I've ever seen that with Re Unicorno. He was always the grail Italian way back when...so that's how I think of him. But there are a ton of Nirvanas now, and a ton of ponies, and so he doesn't get mentioned every week. If he is mentioned, people are generally quite excited about him, so I wouldn't put him in the underrated category. But I think I'm splitting split hairs here ;)

I do remember he was always way out of my price range. Even though he came up a bit more often then than now. (Isn't he in two different poses, as well, or did I imagine that?). I think pricey and rating is related if not the same thing, because often people notice a pony that's expensive, and the ponies that aren't so expensive but don't come up often get less attention because they fly under the radar.

If any of that made sense. I have someone drilling through my wall outside at the moment and it's very distracting.

Re TEs - I'm pretty sure that there's equal rarity on Mimic, Bright Eyes, Quackers in terms of manufacturing and number made. Those three weren't sold globally, they were sold in specific places so they aren't as numerous as Tic Tac Toe and Locket, who were more or less global...but they ought to be equals in rarity and notice. But Bright Eyes gets a lot less attention than Mimic does, and she's a lot less expensive. I think she's a genuine under the radar pony which is a shame. I have always thought her stunning.

Ah, I didn't know he was more popular back in the day :o And heh yeah, whether or not a pony's overlooked or not is kind of up to individual opinion ^^;

He does come in two different poses (Glory pose and Moondancer pose); apparently he's also been seen with head/body mismatch (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Majesty#Italian_Majesty_Variant_III) (Glory head and Moondancer body), does anyone have any photos of that?

They are very tough to find with decent flocking. What about Daisy Sweet or Dainty Delilah? Also everyone states Mimic,Bright eyes, Quackers however what about poor Locket?

This. I feel the same about Mimic, I feel like there is always at least two of them for sale on Ebay. She does not strike me as very rare at all..

White activity club pony on the other hand, now there is a pony impossible to find!

White activity club pony on the other hand, now there is a pony impossible to find!

The irony is that when I used to carboot, going back 20 years now, both Ice Crystal and the white club baby were not that hard to find. I have had more of the baby over the years though not all in great shape. Back then Ice Crystal was probably easier to find though. Here at least. We seem to have had a glut of Mountain Boys, but once those kids sold them off, that was it. Gone.

Here the rarest Mountain Boy was Tornado, only ever had a couple of him. Ice Crystal was never a problem, back when it was possible to find ponies second hand. I probably had ten or so over those years. Of course when the carboot sale closed and time passed, it's a different world. Now people tend to take their collections to ebay rather than the carboot, and in those days I had little if any competition in the entire county region for ponies, which is also now not the case.

We're all also positioned based on our geography and what we COULD find in our locations. For example, Cranberry Muffin and SS Twilight weren't sold here, so I can only go on what happens online and I think both get a fair bit of attention - especially Twilight, she's a popular SS. But there's always a chance I might pick up Ice Crystal or a Great Hair pony, so I don't tend to think of them?

The white club baby is around a lot more than you might think. I had one earlier this year, and I see her come up for sale often. :)

It used to annoy me though years back when people would say Ice Crystal was worth more than one of the Seaside babies or Surprise Newborns when in reality the latter two sets weren't even distributed all over the UK. Ice Crystal appears a lot on ebay, though, because sellers know he's popular. If you're a dealer and you're picking up ponies, you might pick up all of them, but you might pick up the ones you know will sell. Ditto on Mimic. This is how it works, and apparently its all about green. I add Cool Breeze to that green list.

I feel that, in general, the later years of ponies tend to be underrepresented; they don't show up in sales as often (everyone always has 30 Windys/Cotton Candy/Glory for sale, but usually one or two prom queen SHSs, or pocket ponies, or), and they don't usually show up on peoples' "favorite" lists. I think maybe it's because they got so 'gimmicky', because the boom of popularity wasn't as high in the later years, and so on. They don't "feel" like classic ponies, so they get a little less love. But since those were the ones I grew up with, I'm super fond of them! :P They also tend to be higher priced, accordingly, so I guess that means they're recognized as 'uncommon', but they don't tend to show up on popular 'rare' lists, IMO!

I'm seconding the Sundazzle SHS ponies; I've been (casually) seeking an upgrade for my bait yellow one for years, and I think I've seen one or two, and I've never even seen the orange one for sale! (Luckily she's a childhood pony for me!) Also seconding Pink Sprinkles, but I think some of that's also because folks don't know about her as much; I got mine in a lucky eBay lot just a year or two ago. SHS ponies in general tend to get overlooked, so folks (me included!) aren't aware of which ones are rare: ditto for Dream Beauties. Those two tend to be seen as 'non pony' so they're left out of a lot of favorites lists.

@leaveawhisper

SS Twilight. I know for a while she was sought after but I haven't heard anyone mention her lately or seen any for sale for a long time.

Ponyfan

I found one in good condition at a thrift shop this year.  I think I only paid $0.50 for her.

Wow!  :) I looked for her for quite a while before I found one in good condition, Most had really faded hair or really bad flocking loss.

I also agree about the Dream Beauties. I've checked a few times trying to replace my childhood Song Rider (blue perfume Dream Beauty) but I've never seen her for sale or she's really expensive.

Pretty much all of the Dream Beauties.  I don't see them come up very often.

I wonder if they sometimes get mislabeled as Breyer's/Barbie ponies/etc on eBay?

I just pulled her out to look at her.  I haven't given my G1 finds for the last six or so months a bath yet, so she's in the waiting place with the rest of them.  She has minimal flocking loss on the edges of her feet and ears (though her nds ear has a bit more than the ds ear), her hair is pretty pink and may still have some factory curl to it.  It does need a good brushing, though, it's quite tangled.   There are light rubs on her wings, but it doesn't really look like it'll be too bad once I get her cleaned up.  She does have quite a bit of dirt on her, so removing that might reveal some flaws that I'm not noticing now.  I'll try to take before and after pics so I can see the difference a bath makes.

Dutch Shell Pony & Butterfly Pony. The Diary Pony seems to get the most attention out of this set.

Also, Love Story. I don't know if she's necessarily rare, but when I wanted her it took me awhile to find her. In fact I notice a lot of the European ponies don't come up as often as the US ponies do. I wonder why that is.

I don't think they're all that rare? I could be wrong. But Cranberry Muffins is absolutely stunning!! She's so lovely and had such a dynamic pose and dramatic color combination!!
I see Raspberry Jam often enough (my last one I need, I'm just picky) but I rarely ever see CM. I was lucky enough to find a grubby one, and she cleaned up nice!!

 But
Cranberry Muffins is just
so perfect

ahh on that note, bluberry baskets!!!! one of my grails, he is so so SO gorgeous and i really really want him but i for the life of me i cant find him for under like 60 BUCKS. killer. i hope to find him one day.

The Sundazzle SHS are rare??  Wow I have like a whole bag of them!  Let me know if anyone is searching :)  Actually a lot of the later years ponies we had in abundance here, like the Paradise babies and Rainbow babies we all had as kids.  I guess it really depends on location.

I never saw the petite playset shops around here.  They're among my favourite items in my collection :)  The pretty pony parade set was hard to find over here too- they get overlooked in favour of the later 3 sets (twinkle, glow and tropical).

Probably because most European countries are so much smaller than the US that they just didn't need to make as many.  For example, the entire UK can fit inside of Wyoming (I'm basing that off of square footage, not the actual shape of the country or state by the way).  My friend was working at a summer camp in New York with a bunch of people from the UK and she had to explain why they couldn't drive to California to go to Disneyland and be back in time for dinner.  They just didn't realize how huge the US is by comparison.

The sundazzles are underrated in my opinion, but I do not think they are rare. I went after this set last year and bought all three within the same month.

Taffeta is you find/see another white activity club baby that's not over priced, you let me know! I never see her for sale, and she's high on my wishlist!

The orange sea side baby is also a headache! Along with the pink fancy mermaid and baby pineappple! Oh and add daffodil from the flower ponies set to the list too!

Another one I thought of is the alt. Pose brush and grow twisty tails!

I found her in a thrift bin for $0.25 years ago! My best pony find.

I think Magic Star and Truly are both underrated. Love that rearing pose. UK Magic Star is gorgeous, too. So vibrant.

Sand digger!!!! I had to search forever for one! Ayeeee!

Also:
Nurse tender heart
The all white activity baby (I can never find her for sale!)
Magenta satin and lace
Pink sprinkles
Baby stargaze
Baby blubberchen

I didn't know Sand Digger was rare. o.O I forgot how I got mine since it's been quite a few years.... :what:

I'm seconding the Sundazzle SHS ponies; I've been (casually) seeking an upgrade for my bait yellow one for years, and I think I've seen one or two, and I've never even seen the orange one for sale!

Yep, I haven't laid hands on these girls yet, every time I see them on sales lists, they're already gone, or on ebay, the bids get pretty high. And we sold them here, my best friend has two of the set if I remember right..

My ultimate pick would be pink Sprinkles. I've never seen one. I know she's often mistaken for Firefly, but I've messaged a lot of sellers about blurry pics of pink ponies with blue hair, and they always have lightning bolts or zig-zaggy lines.

I'm going with Dainty Dahlia as my response. I also agree with those saying that Bright Eyes and Cranberry Muffins need more love. Fortunately for me, these three aren't as pricey as Red Roses, Mimic and Blueberry Baskets, and yet I want them more. (Well, tie with Cranberry and Blueberry--I like Cranberry's colors better but my mother and aunts picked blueberries with my grandparents all during their childhoods so I want Blueberry because of that eventually as well.)

I also agree that the later g1s don't get enough love / respect from collectors. Really a shame because I love how cute / quirky they are.

I totally agree about Cascade. Which brings a question to mind: How common are European exclusives in comparison to their U.S. counterparts? Does anyone know? Because I can think of many underappreciated European exclusives: Sweet Delight, Painting Time, Snowdrop, Love Story, etc....

My guess would be that European exclusives would be, for the most part, less common than U.S./North American ponies because ponies were pretty expensive in Europe and were probably a little scarcer there. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong; I feel like I've heard that in Europe, genuine Hasbro ponies were pricey.)

I also think basic earth pony European exclusives would be, for the most part, much less appreciated than other European exclusives because they don't really stand out. By that I mean that they're not like the Mountain Boys or regular-eyed versions of babies we had as BBE ponies over here, and they don't have any memorable feature (necessarily); they're simply non-gimmicky earth ponies and there's not as much incentive to notice them. Many of them are really pretty, though!

I completely agree. To me personally, their simplicity and lack of gimmicks is what makes them so appealing.

I just sold a Bright Eyes on eBay. She would have been stunning had she not had chew marks on one of her legs. Unfortunately no one wanted to buy her so she went really cheap.

I think pink sprinkles is vhtf and overlooked. Also Tall Tales isn't super common, most of the year 10 ponies seem to be difficult to find, since it was short ran and the line ended early.

I bet it is mine. I do believe she did go to France :) And I would have kept her had I not already had a Bright Eyes.

I'm glad she found a good home. She displayed great except for those chews, which you couldn't even see from the display side.

Post by: Taffeta on December 11, 2016, 09:44:08 AM
I think the 3 Daddy ponies may be some of the hardest to find ponies in the UK line, and I'm not even joking. I have had doubles of Meadowsweet - in fact, I somehow have Meadowsweet, which is weird, because I assumed I was looking after my sister's one but hers was in the attic with her mother and baby - so we must have had an extra one at some point that I kept for whatever reason of my own. But Sunbright and Berrytown, never had doubles. I never saw them at carboot sales here even at the time when MLP were at their peak and we were finding all kinds of things. BOTH came in trades. One of the two I think came from a trade with the US and Berrytown was the last UK release pony I needed to complete my collection.

So I think they're a great call. I remember them in stores, with the babies and the Mummies. We didn't have any of the parents, just the babies, because of the cost, but I don't remember there being fewer Daddies on sale than Mummies. I wonder if there was a gender imbalance on what parents chose for kids or on what kids wanted. Weird but interesting. Either way they are seriously hard to find, and seriously underrated in my opinion compared to the rest of their families. Or rather, they are rarer than the rest of their families but maybe don't get credit for it because the babies are more common and people don't always realise that they weren't sold as a set. Especially because in the US (and sometimes in the UK) the earlier families WERE sold as sets. So the babies come up more because (like my sister and I), kids could afford them more readily than the parents.

I think actually that Mummy Sunbright is also pretty hard to find. I've never had a double of her, either. I had her from new and have never had another, but I have had doubles of the other two mothers and all of the babies.

The Seaside babies are like all others in the 1993-4 line. They didn't get distributed everywhere. I think they get a lot of attention when they are mentioned, especially with the floats, but there are so many ponies from that year which are really hard to find and which the internet doesn't reflect the rarity of all that well. The Seaside Babies WERE in the ponies hasbro sent to dispersal and clearance stores, and so in some areas they appear more than others. The Jewellery Babies are much worse, as Hasbro never sent those out anywhere.

But in comparison to those two sets, I think the Sweetie Babies get a lot more attention.
